- This is the first song of the extremely beautiful song cycle “Winterreise” (Winter Journey) by Franz Schubert. The name of the first song is “Gute Nacht” (good night).
Franz Schubert - Die Winterreise, D.911
More beautiful German songs probably do not exist
Winterreise is a song cycle consisting of 24 individual songs. The songs are based on 24 poems written by the German poet Wilhelm Müller.
Franz Schubert composed the music to the 24 poems in 1827. That was the year of the death of Beethoven, and one year before his own death (1828). And in the last days before his death Schubert was working on correcting the last songs of the song cycle.
Winterreise is introvert and interior.
The song cycle tells the story of an unrequited love. And is full of tragic feelings of desperation. Images of ice, snow, death, tears, anguish, journeying. The opening song (“Gute Nacht” = Good night) he explains that the male protagonist had felt in love with a beautiful girl but that the girl has lost the love for him. The 24 songs are about the romantic hero set against fate itself.
In Winterreise the pianist is as important as the singer. In the songs, the piano provides strong images of nature, the rushing storm, the crying wind, the water under the ice, birds singing, ravens croaking, dogs barking, and more.
I am learning Germany, my lesson today was about greetings, i learned what gute nacht is and decided to search it on UA-cam for whatever reason that i don't even know and i came across this masterpiece
Quite incredible.

In 2022, Schubert 225 years old ❤
Străin am fost pe lume
Spre străini, plec din nou
Plin de flori in tumult-mai
E anotimpul meu.
Fata voia iubire
Mama-sa măritiș
Iară-mi devine lumea
Un nor aspru si trist.
Troienind prin zăpadă
Ma pregătesc, pe-ascuns
Sa fug din nou, departe
Caci așa mi-a fost scris,
O umbra a lunii lasă
Argintii urme-n noapte
Pe covorașe albe
Si moi ca de mătase.
Ce mai aștept de-acuma?
Sa fiu iar alungat?
Las așa latre câinii
La hanu-întunecat.
Iubirea pleacă iară
Așa vrea Dumnezeu
Eu plec din nou, departe
Somn lin, odorul meu
Nu vreau ca sa te tulburi
In vis, ca sa nu suferi
Sa nu-mi mai auzi pașii
Când plec si închid ușa.
Iți scriu câteva rânduri
Pe ușă…visuri line
Sa știi mâine, iubito
Ca m-am gândit la tine!
Die Liebe liebt das wandern. Gott hat sie so gemacht!

Such effortless singing (an illusion!) and the change to major for the last stroke is a masterful stroke.

Paroles :
Fremd bin ich eingezogen,
Fremd zieh’ ich wieder aus.
Der Mai war mir gewogen
Mit manchem Blumenstrauss.
Das Mädchen sprach von Liebe,
Die Mutter gar von Eh’ -
Nun ist die Welt so trübe,
Der Weg gehüllt in Schnee.
Ich kann zu meiner Reisen
Nicht wählen mit der Zeit:
Muss selbst den Weg mir weisen
In dieser Dunkelheit.
Es zieht ein Mondenschatten
Als mein Gefährte mit,
Und auf den weissen Matten
Such’ ich des Wildes Tritt.
Was soll ich länger weilen,
Dass man mich trieb’ hinaus?
Lass irre Hunde heulen
Vor ihres Herren Haus!
Die Liebe liebt das Wandern,
Gott hat sie so gemacht -
Von einem zu dem andern -
Fein Liebchen, gute Nacht.
Will dich im Traum nicht stören,
Wär’ Schad’ um deine Ruh’,
Sollst meinen Tritt nicht hören -
Sacht, sacht die Türe zu!
Schreib’ im Vorübergehen
An’s Tor dir gute Nacht,
Damit du mögest sehen,
An dich hab’ ich gedacht.
Dietrich Fischer Dieskau is so incredibly expressive and paints a picture of the emotion and the scene simply with his body language and facial expressions. I had first seen him do it in that famous recording of Der Erlkonig and had listened to this song multiple times but this this is the first time I had learned the lyrics and see him perform it. Stunning.
incredible
Schubert is not ''one of most important'' composers from Austria, he is one the greatest. Besides, he wrote this masterpiece in 1827.
Thank you for the video + translate !
Gute nacht
What a great man.
Danke für die Text und bild der Singer, und die Partitur, noch ausserdem!
"Schubert wrote the music to the 24 poems of "Winter Journey" in 1927, one year before his death"
I think you mean 1827
A letra é de Wilhelm Müller...
Perfeito, perfekt, perfekte
Fischer Dieskau und Brendel. For eternity!!!
Masterpiece
Schubert.. unvergleichlich
Profundo.
You all, Rest In Peace!
Gute Nacht!
Está claro que entre los lieder de Schubert y el rock hay una distancia muy corta. Cualquier compositor de rock de hoy dia con un poco de talento sabe lo que aquí se plantea.
Beautiful performance but the titles across the screen are annoying,
💐🌿💐
He died in 1827 not 1927, sadly.
He died on November 19, only 31 years old. A catastrophic loss for the musical world, then and now-
😂
Who is the singer here?
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Wow! Like we say in Reykjavik: "Storkostlegt!" I think that a lot of nations are jealous of Germany, and jealousy hurts tremendously.
Brendel 's sound is not suitable for Schubert!(too aggressive) Listen to Gerald Moore:):):)
I don't think DFDs sound is appropriate for anything. His very heavy smoking ruined whatever beauty of tone he might have had. This is very harsh sounding
By the way I heard Barenboim accompany Quasthoff and had the same thought. Quasthoff was magnificent, much better than DFD
@@marksmith3947 Barennoim and Quasthoff is too clean, I prefer this version, much more passionate and intense. (also a bit faster perhaps) also Hermann Prey's version is quite nice.
I don't hear any harshness in his voice and I wouldn't call Brendel aggressive. This is Die Winterreise, one of the most depressing and emotionally raw pieces of music in the classical repertoire, it's not supposed to sound pure and pretty. You need a bit of rawness to make this piece work. There are lots of utterly boring performances of the Winterreise by singers who seem to think that this is just a collection of pretty little songs. If it doesn't hit you in the gut the performance has failed.
Apart from the many Dieskau versions, my favorite is probably the wartime recording by the tenor Peter Anders and the pianist Michael Raucheisen. It's by far the rawest performance of the piece, probably because it was recorded in the spring of 1945 when Germany was on the brink of total collapse. It's so raw in fact that I sometimes find it hard to listen to. Peter Anders sings with so much intensity and pain, at times his voice breaks and it just sends shivers down your spine.
Brendel 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Who is the singer????please!!
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (1925-2012)
