  • Auntie Mame is one of my all time favorite movies! A classic from 1958 with a great performance by Rosalind Russell as the wealthy, eccentric New York socialite Mame Dennis. The logline from imdb.com: An orphan goes to live with his free-spirited aunt. Conflict ensues when the executor of his father's estate objects to the aunt's lifestyle.
    The film has many great lines in it. Here is one of them...

      @@Alusnovalotus Yea but you have to remember, the Lucille Ball version was a MUSICAL. First came the book in 1955 which was semi biographical as Auntie Mame was a real person. A year later came the first Broadway play which was a comedy. THEN came THIS movie in 1958 which was based on both the book and play. Fast forward to 1966 and it was on Broadway again, only this time (and for the very FIRST time) as a musical starring Angela Lansbury. The Lucille Ball version was a musical based loosely on the Broadway production, not THIS movie or the original stage production. Personally, I thought old Lu did a pretty good job. I don't know why everyone dislikes it so much.

    • @Alusnovalotus
      @Alusnovalotus 2 роки тому +1

      @@retroguy9494 well, for one, Lucille never had a voice for singing, ever. Whomever thought she was good for a MUSICAL was either suicidal, narcotically dependent or, Lucille Ball herself.
      She’s always been a shameless promoter of herself so it’s not far from what probably happened.
      But your comment was very insightful. I’d forgotten this was a play(?) before it was a movie. Either way I loved this version far more than the musical. The only thing I think the musical beat this version out was in costumery. Bea Arthur looked great in flapper gear. Oh. That was the second best thing about the musical. The best was Bea Arthur.

    • @retroguy9494

      @@Alusnovalotus WOW why do you hate Lucy so much? Its true...she wasn't the best singer. She was EXCELLENT at dancing though. In fact, that's how she broke into Hollywood. As a Goldwyn girl. You ARE right kind of when you say "shameless promoter" in this case. See, Lucy for some odd reason thought Angela Lansbury based her performance on Broadway off of the Lucy Ricardo character so Lucy wanted to do the movie musical and not let Lansbury do it, who was being considered. Plus, she thought movies, since the Hays code was lifted, had become too smutty and gritty (which to some degree they WERE) and felt her performance would re-usher in wholesome family movies. But Warner Brothers wasn't hot on the idea of her playing Mame, thinking her too old and she couldn't sing well. So Lucy put up 5 million of her OWN money (which was almost half the films budget) to ensure she got the role. But that also gave her production control. When Warner's wanted to dub her singing, she refused, demanding she do all her own singing.
      Truth be told, even Desi advised her not to do the film. But her mind was made up. She even went to see Lansbury on Broadway and Lansbury caught Lucy in the wings taking notes during the performance! LOL The critics were HORRID towards her and she was very hurt. But I still like it! I can't explain it. Its like....it's Mame.....but its also Lucy! And its a comedy so its almost as if Lucy finally got into the show and although she tried her best, it was a performance like we would expect Lucy Ricardo to give at the club! LOL

Then 15 minutes later someone, if not the operator herself would either repeat it as if you were just calling or say "who are you holding for?" To which I usually say "no one yet because you put me on hold as soon as you answered my call!" Bunch of idiots today!

But, we were trained thoroughly before we were actually on the job, helping the public. I'll never forget this guy, estranged from his mother, who was dying in a hospital somewhere in Delaware, and I called all these hospitals trying to find her for him. I don't remember anything else about the call, but we had many situations similar to this one.
