Great video. I have always hibernated my tortoises. Even my hatchlings hibernate in their first year. This is what they are hard wired to do.
I have found fear and misunderstanding is the biggest block to hibernating for new owners.
Hey becky! I'm a new tortoise owner and all your videos are super helpful to me and my lil fella!
Interesting. Good information video! Subscribed. 👍🐢❤️. Nice name hehe!
Thank you so much, you have a lovely name too 😆
Thanks for this, I’ve been really afraid to hibernate him tbh bec I dk what I’m doing so I’ve put it off for a while now, but at this point he doesn’t even know what season it is, I really think I need to start
I still find it nerve wracking to be honest, there are some helpful groups on Facebook who can help too with some keepers much more knowledgeable than me, there’s one called ‘tortoise hibernation group uk - Mediterranean species’ which does a step by step every year which you can follow along with which may help you feel more confident and you can ask questions as and when you have them 😊
My Herman has buried himself in the garden where he lives and has free reign not sure what to do! He did this last year and was fine but worried about the frost.
Hiya, I don’t know too much about outside hibernation because I’ve always done a controlled hibernation in the fridge where the temperature is always 5 degrees Celsius. There are some really helpful hibernation groups on Facebook, I would ask there as there are some much more knowledgeable people than me on the subject. I know tortoises can hibernate this way successfully if they dig down far enough because they can be fairly well insulated under all the soil but it is very cold at the moment and I would be worried too because frost can be deadly for tortoises. I hope all goes well 🤞
This has been really helpful ! Just discovered your channel. My hermann is 13 years old and ive always been to frightened / not educated enough to hibernate her (i got her when i was 13). Would you recommend trying to hibernate her after not doing so all this time? 🐢
It’s never too late to hibernate them but I would recommend doing your own research first. There’s some helpful groups on Facebook which coach people through it step by step and what you should be doing each week, I know it’s nerve wracking though!
Really useful video thank you. Just one question, can you still hibernate an older tortoise if it hasn't hibernated before, or will it not be used to the conditions? My tortoise is 7 years old (hatched 2013) and we have had a long debate on whether to hibernate him or not because of the constant risks of hibernation.
Yes you can providing you go through a wind down and pre hibernation checks.
If I don’t will my Herman’s tortoise die I’ve had him since July and I’m to nervous to attempt to do so
No, they don’t die from not hibernating but from what I’ve read, if they are hibernated safely it can be healthier long term and increase their lifespan. I wouldn’t hibernate a tortoise the first year you get it anyway because you won’t know enough about it’s health but I would start looking into it for next year. You can always have a look at the facebook group ‘tortoise hibernation group- Mediterranean species’ for lots of good information 😊
Sorry if off the point but what are the flowers they are eating?
Thanks
Hi, they are mimulus flowers 😊
Hi becky
My tortoise have a swollen eyes when she wake up in the morning and I can't find a Reptile vet where i leave.
Do you have any idea what the problem is ??? Thanks
Hi, I'm not a vet but I imagine it could be a number of things including injury, infection, irritation from substrate or vitamin deficiency. It may be worth posting a photo on a tortoise forum like tortoiseforum.org and seeing if anyone can give you advice. They also have lists of reptile vets in different areas: www.tortoiseforum.org/forums/tortoise-vet-list.126/
EDIT- I've found this which may help: sites.google.com/site/tortoiselibrary/health-and-medical/symptoms-guide
