Like Violet said, "he just gathered the courage to ask". Pen never told him how she felt. He didn't know. The person in question is often the one not realizing it. And, when you think about it, only Marina figured it out. But even Eloise or others, never knew how Pen felt. No one of the ton seems to know. She hid it pretty well. So I don't agree he should feel pain, not even a little. He never meant to hurt her, in any way. It was out of his control or knowledge. So I believe he's not to blame. I believe it's no one's fault really. He's hurting here, because she doesn't realize how he feels, and before she was in his place. That's sad, bad timing and all... But none of them deserves it. I'm one to believe, that you can't blame someone for not sharing your feelings. It doesn't feel good, yes. But that doesn't mean they should feel pain for compensating yours.
I'm a little too empathetic for my own good XD, so that may be why I feel that way. Because I hate to see someone in pain, even if that someone made me feel pain before.
@@Sytrylt I agree. I think he knew she had a soft spot for him, but this time when he came back she seemed over him, she was hurt by his words and it shocked him. I believe like you that he was oblivious. She mentioned to him that she was looking for a husband and I think that's when things got real for him and he realized that they're no longer kids which meant the friendship would most likely die or be limited once she'd have a husband. That's when he came to the realization that he wanted her as a wife. I agree that it was timing, back then Colin was still mentally a kid while Pen like other girls was introduced to society early and forced to grow up, we heard 3 years ago I think on the show so she could have had kids by now if she got married early like Daphne.

Maybe it's my childhood trauma talking, but I snorted when they had that moment of bonding over their shared contempt of their families. I think they're a great match!
I wrote this on patreon but wanted to include it on youtube as well. I feel like Colin has always had some sort of affection towards Penelope. Throughout season 1 and 2 and the first two episodes of s3 he has always given her these longing glances and been alone with her/taken her hand when it is considered improper, tried to protect her from cousin Jack and said sweet words to her. I think what was missing was that physical connection, so after kissing her he finally realizes he's attracted to her and wants her more than a friend. I can't wait to see your reactions to episode 4!!!
I agree. He’s different from his brothers and many other men in that era in that he doesn’t really want to get with a lot of women & then have a whirlwind romance with a stranger, so I don’t think he really recognizes his feelings as LOVE until it smacks him in the face.
I agree. He has always loved her but he thought it was as a friend or maybe even as and extra sister and then when they kissed he was like oh shit this isn't friendly love, this isn't familial love this is just straight up love.
I agree, he clearly always had affection for her and it just never clicked that there could or would be more than that until the thought of someone else taking her away and that kiss jump started his feelings.

I saw a tweet from the director of this episode that said Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton) requested to be in the background of that scene because she felt it was very important for her character to be shown invested in Colin & Penelope’s relationship (despite that meaning she would need to be standing around for hours during all the different takes etc) ❤ love her!

One of the many things I love about this season is how everyone and their mother throw it in his face that he is _such_ a good friend for helping Penelope, and it'll be because of the goodness of _his_ heart that she will find a prospect, fall in love and marry someone else... After such a long time saying they're good friends, now he's the one being friendzoned.

Francesca isn't selfish for not wanting to be at the disposal of a rich man. I mean, Penelope even said in the beginning of the season that if she didn't find a love match on this third season out, it's a sign she will more than likely never be with a man ever in her life. This society is brutal on women and reputations in general.
I love and appreciate how quickly you’re releasing these reactions. I totally binged all (4) eps on the first day…couldn’t help it. A sweet moment I noticed is after Colin talks to his mom about friendship when Violet sees how he looks at Penn and walks to her to confess his feelings, you can see Violet in the background watching the whole thing. I love how invested she is in her children’s happiness. 😊

I think sometimes we all forget that we have mainly seen their relationship from Pen’s point of view so we get all pissed that he doesn’t see her in that way. However, Penelope has always liked Colin so he only knew that one version of her. He doesn’t see her behavior towards him as romantic and therefore doesn’t even go there in terms of his own feelings. He doesn’t owe her anything and doesn’t owe it to her to reciprocate her feelings. I like that once he does figure out his own feelings, he doesn’t waste time letting her know. He is actually terrified that she doesn’t feel the same way.
The way y'all celebrated it being Colin's dream was so relatable...
Also Violet did say her garden was in bloom her and she wanted to be gardened so glad she might finally hire a farmer to tend to her violets...

I’m enjoying the season so far but\ one thing that I’m missing so far is the Eloise and Penelope friendship I can’t wait for the next one to see what the cliffhanger is
Benedict was like that at the balloon when the ladies rushed over because those ladies have one thing on their mind, marriage, and he is not ready for that at the moment lol.
At first I was kinda annoyed by the one sided feelings, but I will say I noticed in the past seasons Colin always looked at Penelope as if he was fond of her, and you can recognize that everytime there's a ball/event, he seeks her out. I watched a video about the analysis of Polin and there were also some great points made , Colin in some way recognized that the things he was looking for were found in Penelope but he didnt connect it to romantic feelings or he felt all that a person would feel if they were romantically interested but he was missing the actual attraction part until they kissed. He better love her more than she loves him bc this guy didnt truly see her for too long lol. Colin's blindness was slightly irritating, he noticed that she was the person who helped him realize things about himself, that she cared, actually took him seriously when others didn't, she also seemed more excited whenever he came back from travelling than his actual family.
Pen also makes him feel validated.
Because she is always around I think he takes her for granted as someone that will always be around for him as a loyal friend rather than an actual Woman with romantic feelings & other motivations. I think they both see each other with rose colored glasses, they both thought in one way or another that they weren't good enough, especially Colin. He's not the confident, charming person he comes off as. They both have things in common when it comes to insecurities & people overlooking them in some way.
I wouldn5 want my brother lusting after my friends when they were over and we were watching a movie in our night shirts and shorts at 17 and he was 21 . That’s gross

Tbh, Colin was always staring over at Penelope during season 1 and 2 that i don't think anyone would think much about it. It's funny becauses he's always been looking around for her. Now the ton might think it's because he's coaching her that he's staring but in friendship and in love he's always been inclined to draw his gaze to where she is out of want of companionship and trye lively conversation.

When Lord Debling interrupted them you can see the pain on her face bc a part of her KNEW, maybe not consciously, he was going to say he had feeling and she is so hurt he doesn’t fight for her in the moment.

I think Colin was truly oblivious. His confidence with other women was (like "Lady Whistledown" said) a mask for his insecurities. Colin knew her for so long as a family friend, it's hard to look past that in the society they live in. Part of him assumed she'd always be in his life no matter what. But, that's not proper for society. I don't think he thought that through. Pen looking for a husband forced him to confront his feelings for her. She has her own desires and wants. She would move on without him. That's when he realized he wanted to marry her.
I think when she confided that she wanted a husband, he was taken aback that Penelope would not always be there to talk to so that is why he said he would help her. I think he purposefully had her talk to those gentlemen in the park, Lord Basilio, and Lord Remington (the guy in the wheelchair) because he felt that she would not be interested in them after speaking with them. You can tell he is annoyed that she enjoyed talking to Lord Remington and that he even asked to call on her and she said yes.
Sex education was not commonly shared in the home/family or by the medical community with girls and young women up until the 1970’s. Most females did not even understand how their body worked period. When sex Ed in schools started parents refused permission. Ignorance is bliss. Thank God my mother sat me down at 9, 1967 to explain with the assistance of a booklet for girls about menstrual cycles and general how babies are made. I appreciated that effort even though my best friend and I had been reading all her older sister’s books all that year. I had already learned more than my mother explained and I did freely ask questions after that.
You're absolutely right that someone should have been IN the Balloon, ideally Colin and Pen. This "rescue" was anticlimactic and led to nothing. No one, not even Colin, reacted really to the fact that Debling touched Pen. It was unnecessary.
Pen kept her word and didn't expect anything from Colin after the kiss. However, Colin however after the kiss realised his feelings and is down bad. Definitely the kiss was the revelation not Debling.

lmao at Pen being so dramatic about getting a first kiss last episode. It was like she had minutes to live, like she was about to join a convent. The girl was always attractive, but hasn't been treated like it, sad to see. Even people see her as a charity case, mainly because of the way she holds and sees herself. If she was more confident, had her own style and didn't care about people's words, I'm sure that she would attract a lot more people. Colin always loved her and he probably knew she had a thing for him. He only realized it was romantic on his side when he started losing access to her and became less of a priority in her life. I think part of the reason he came back is because Pen wasn't writing to him and also his siblings probably wrote to him about Eloise befriending Cressida.
Part of the reason she was "so dramatic" about the kiss is because she thought the scandal and humiliation of the secret getting out meant that she was going to be ruined and never get married or have anyone show interest in her again. That's really how serious it could have been. I think it really might have been that bad, if it weren't for Debling tipping his hand about courting her so soon afterward and the obvious longstanding well-known tight relationship between her family and the Bridgertons. If they didn't have the "old family friends" excuse and she didn't have the most eligible bachelor after her...well, girls have been ruined for less. Pen knows that from experience as Whistledown. That's why the narration says when all hope is lost, a lady may become reckless. Pen has lost all hope and is really thinking of this kiss as the end of her romantic dreams before settling for a practical match with whoever might still be willing to marry a social outcast like her. It's not a first step for a new relationship. It's the end. It's goodbye.
I'm enjoying how fast these reactions are being dropped even though that means less to watch in the wait until part 2.😄

If you guys watch the ball scene from when Colin is asking his mother about love, you can see that Violet sees her son checking out Penelope. Even after she walks away, you can see Violet watching her son trying to speak with Penelope. She is clocking his every move to see if he is going to tell her that he likes her. She must have been so upset at him after the ball.

In that time period, girls of high birth were not allowed or expected to know anything about sex or procreation until their marriage. I suspect it was at least partly so that they wouldn't indulge in sexual activities and risk pregnancy with the wrong kind of man (not titled or wealthy) and partly so the men could get away with sleeping around right in front of them without the girls catching on. It's part of what makes each of the relationships in the 3 seasons so scandalous. The men let the women in on the secret before they have even proposed, let alone married. Daphne didn't know what about sex caused a baby to be made. Kate knew things because she was raised in a different culture in India, where they had different rules about such things. Penelope didn't just have her guy explain about erogenous zones (like Simon did)...no, her guy Colin actually showed her. "He's a giver, that one." Lol The whole bit lans a little differently once you know how rare and forbidden it is in society. Them touching bare hands is scandalous. Them being alone in a room (or a carriage) could force them to marry. The way he cut in on her dance, ran after her out of the ball, and got in her carriage was basically like announcing his marriage proposal in the paper. If they didn't get engaged after all of that, she would be totally ruined and off the market forever. Not mildly censured like Eloise for having the wrong kind of friend (poor and working class). The assumption of everyone would be that, of course, they had sex and she might be pregnant outside marriage. Girls have been committed to asylums or convents or sent out of the country after such events. It was no joke.
Okay, I NEED a Violet & Edmund love story from when they were young. Even if it's just 6 episodes, like with Queen Charolette & King George!! Or even just a 4-episode-mini-series; I'll take it!! We can even see little boys, Anthony, Benedict, & Colin, & maybe even little girls Daphne & Eloise, too!! I would LOVE to them all when they were a happy family BEFORE tragedy struck with the bee 🐝 & everything!! 😍🥰❤
