I know I am. She's been a terrible mother to Penelope, relentlessly belittling and bullying her since season 1 with the help of her other two daughters. I'll admit she is a strong and resilient female character, always trying her best to provide for her daughters and protect them, but she sure as hell doesn't know how to love them right. Especially Penelope.
I feel like that moment being immediately followed by Prudence showing up and telling her she's pregnant and saying, "Are you not happy?" says everything about Portia's relationships with her daughters. They're STARVED of maternal love, which is why Prudence and Phillipa have this toxic rivalry between them, and the only time they get along is when they're bullying Pen. Portia's been so concerned about her family's material needs that she's failed to take care of them in literally every other way. Pen only turned out okay because she got unconditional love from the Bridgertons.

Not the main point of the episodes but I love Violet Bridgerton’s look when she sees one of her kids falling in love. Last episode with Colin asking about love and friendship, this episode when she sees Francesca playing the revised melody. The joy she gets from seeing her babies happy just warms my heart ❤

i kept hearing FOR MONTHS about some carriage scene that happens in the book, so as soon as Colin opened that door, i knew what was about to go down, but i still wasn't FULLY prepared for that😭🤭
I mean, Daphne and the Duke got engaged in ep 4 and they only met at the start of that season, meanwhile Pen and Colin already knew each other since childhood so they didn't really need to get to know each other as much as just change their dynamic to include more physical and emotional intimacy. Pen, of course, was already open for that, and as for Colin, that first kiss in ep 2 was his awakening.
Both s1 and s3 have conflicts that last until after they get together, which is good bc people in romance sometimes believe the final step is marriage and then happily ever after. S2 was the odd one of the 3 since their only conflict was the thing stopping them from being together
Colin may talk (at length) about his travels, and even that he met women, but you never see him talking about having sex with them. He dislikes the way the other lords talk because he's respectful, and kind, and a good person. These are strengths, not weaknesses. Colin's gazes convey his longing, but he has been, up to this point, a guy who doubts himself so much, he was pretending to be someone completely different. I don't think they could make this any clearer. Penelope/LW, Eloise and Violet call him out on it, and even Colin himself admits it. The carriage scene is a lesson in consent. He only gets in after she says yes, he makes sure she's not engaged before telling her how he feels, and he takes things further only after she nods yes. We're not supposed to know what's the deal with Marcus yet, but the way they focus on him and Violet, he's probably not a bad person (I hope). John and Francesca are not "weird", they're just different. I saw someone saying they could be neurodivergent, which would be amazing. Cressida's crazy costumes are an allusion to caged birds, especially when she's in her mausoleum of a house, because she's under total control of her shitty parents. That likely influences, but does not justify, her behavior.
This is a lovely analysis. I haven't read the books but what you say makes me wonder. The lord who likes animals and such, maybe it's symbolism for him to fall in love with the "caged bird"? And free the caged bird from her prison? I never thought I would warm to Cressida but I do hope she finds happiness.

Only correction I’d make to your reaction is that when Debling tells Penelope that he’s happy she has such a full life while they are dancing, she’s not thinking he’s just so nice, she’s questioning whether she could be happy with a life without love. Penelope grew up reading romance novels, she’s always dreamed of finding a passionate love and now she’s asking herself if a life of platonic companionship, financial security and an escape from her mom will be enough to satisfy her. I mean the man just told her that he doesn’t think he’ll ever grow to love her because his work means too much to him. He’s nice, and certainly it’s a desirable outcome for the time, but it’s hardly an exciting prospect if you dream of love.
Not only that, he's about to leave for 3 years on a potentially perilous journey. She'd probably have a 50/50 shot of ending up a widow, with no kids. She'd have wealth & loneliness.

There's an interesting discussion about what Debling's travels truly mean. In this episode, he mentions the Northwest Passage, an extremely dangerous one many travelers tried to brave. Most never came back, and those who did had a lot of turmoil. It was a travel of hubris. Even Debling being a vegetarian could be a reference to this, considering trips North were notorious for having meat as a source of nutrition (how would one preserve vegetables?). Which brings us to Penelope. Penelope was the name of Odysseus' wife, waiting for him even as it took a decade for him to return from the Trojan War, tricking suitors so she could remain faithful and not remarry. Her name and the references suggest that, if she were to marry Debling, not only he might never fall for her but he was leaving for three years and most likely dying there. If he did, proving his death would be difficult. There were ships lost around that passage that were only found recently. Which means she would be lost in limbo, forever a widow. She wouldn't be able to remarry until his death was confirmed. Colin, while completely unhinged, breaking all society protocols and grabbing her mid-dance, probably saved her from a life alone without love.
Woah that's so cool! If you think about it. It would make for a great story if Penelope and Colin's relationship happened after Penelope is stuck in this 'limbo' because it is assumed he is dead. Then he miraculously reappears alive after all this time. Haha, would make for good drama
I thought Debling was acting pretty selfishly. He wants to get married but then disappear for years. Then why does he need a wife? And then the woman should only love him? What if he gets her pregnant on her wedding night? Then she gets to go through all of this alone without knowing if he'll ever come back? No, Colin is right. That's not a good husband. Not for any woman, but especially not for Pen... There is only one man who can make her happy 🥰
@@chloeloveful I reckon it's to secure a heir for his property incase he dies. Those journeys are pretty dangerous. Also, lack of loyalty from his wife means that his estate is in risky hands. He doesn't expect her to love him, just to not have affections elsewhere. He is pretty selfish but he's been honest about it, he has not once lied about not being able to give love. Considering a lot of people married for convenience rather than love back in those days, I think his offer is pretty reasonable considering his wealthy background.

25:15 guys, that look on Colin's face was **EVERYTHING**! That is deep love and passion and I love that they showed it coming from him. He was in awe of her and the fact that she was finally touching him (that it wasn't a mere dream). She, too, was clearly fulfilling what was likely a long-held desire to run her hands through his hair. That was a wish fulfillment for the both of them. I assure you a majority of women would love it if their man made that facial expression.
A lot of viewers don't seem to consider the social norms of the time - it was highly unlikely he'd ever been touched like that before, and certainly not by someone he loved. Members of the opposite sex weren't even allowed to touch hands without being covered by gloves. His expression is one of pure wonder, awe and amazement. I love it. It's a beautiful moment in the show and I think both actors absolutely knocked it out of the park. I'm on pins and needles waiting for Part 2!
Colin is definitely thinking, "She's a goddess", like in the book. Nicola Coughlan said in an interview that the hair stylist on set was constantly making sure Colin's (Luke Newton) hair was perfect. She asked could she reach out and touch his hair and at first was told no, but she fought for that because that was something she felt Penelope would definitely do. 🥰 It's such a fantastic moment. They knocked it out of the park. 🤩

Excuses…excuses. The pacing is just bad. The whole season is rushed and that’s because they decided to make Lady Whistledown a whole part when it honestly could have been a side plot. Also there was no build up for two seasons. Penelope pined after him for two seasons and he acted oblivious to it all. He fell in love with her after a kiss be so for real. I understand that happens in the books but there could have been a better build up to him liking her if they didn’t split it into two parts.
@jahnoyawalker4227 He likes her before the kiss. When he decides to go to the ball, he flashes back to when she bandages his hand and they shared a prolonged touch and a look. Because that's what convinces him she might also have feelings for him. After that bandage scene you can see he's visiblely Jealous when she's talking and laughing to with the guy in the wheelchair. He'll they even play the Jealous in the background of that scene and that's all BEFORE the kiss. The build up for them all happened in the first 2 seasons. Yeah Colin is obvious but there is still build up. They already know each other and take care of each other. Colin takes so many liberties there's no wonder people thought he was courting her. And then Penelope didn't write back to him for a few months and he spiraled so effing hard he came back trying to be someone else. He told her season 2 that her letters kept him grounded and he lost that ground before season 3. He also had decided to take care of her. Yes the kiss opened his eyes for real. His journal entry was about being surrounded by woman and how he can be physically intimate but still felt distant and lonely. And just kissing Penelope he finally had both the physical and emotional intimacy togther and yeah it blew his mind and drove him crazy. Placed the last puzzle piece in his relationship with Penelope. She's always the person who believed in him, made him feel appreciated like he said, who he sought out cause he always wanted to see and be around her. And he does this in the other seasons, too. He was really lonely on his travels despite everything. (You can find some of his journal pages online) The first time he left him and Penelope wrote to each other. And it meant a lot to him. This time he was incredibly lonely and clearly missed her. He only shared about his travels with her when he came back, he lost his way without her, he was literally looking for excuses to be around her this season and then the kiss finally helped him really understand his feelings. If he says later on that he was always in love with her and didn't realize it I wouldn't be surprised at all. Even just the way he looked at her sometimes in the first 2 seasons. Especially 2.

I actually love the moment where Pen is daydreaming of Colin & staring at him in the library whilst Debling is right next to her. It's the perfect example of two people that are meant to be and can't help themselves.

i know it's such a small moment in an episode full of crazy ones, but one of my favorite parts of the whole episode is when john stirling turns towards the painting in the bridgerton's drawing room and francesca's face immediately lights up before she follows suit. colin and penelope are a wonderful leading couple, but something about the understated sweetness of francesca and john really gets me
Colin really is Down Bad crying at the club over Pen. One kiss was all it took and then he just couldn't get her out of his head. I think he just finally had that moment of clarity and then he couldn't wait anymore. It deffo escalated quickly but i was happy it did. Hope we get more scenes with them in part 2. As for the look he gives when she strokes his hair in the carriage. I believe this is because of the reverence with which she touches him. He has only been with courtesans in brothels, whom he paid, so none of those encounters had feelings of true intimacy whereas being with Pen is full of emotion, something he hasnt had before. This is alluded to when Pen reads his diary and it says about him being close with other women but still feeling distance. Another great reaction guys, the singsong to pitbull cracked me up 😂 will be back for part 2 ❤

Colin may talk (at length) about his travels, and even that he met women, but you never see him talking about having sex with them. He dislikes the way the other lords talk because he's respectful, and kind, and a good person. These are strengths, not weaknesses.
Colin's gazes convey his longing, but he has been, up to this point, a guy who doubts himself so much, he was pretending to be someone completely different. I don't think they could make this any clearer. Penelope/LW, Eloise and Violet call him out on it, and even Colin himself admits it.
The carriage scene is a lesson in consent. He only gets in after she says yes, he makes sure she's not engaged before telling her how he feels, and he takes things further only after she nods yes.
We're not supposed to know what's the deal with Marcus yet, but the way they focus on him and Violet, he's probably not a bad person (I hope).
John and Francesca are not "weird", they're just different. I saw someone saying they could be neurodivergent, which would be amazing.
Cressida's crazy costumes are an allusion to caged birds, especially when she's in her mausoleum of a house, because she's under total control of her shitty parents. That likely influences, but does not justify, her behavior.
I believe it has been said by the author that Franny is autistic. Or implied to be. Which I think makes perfect sense.
This is a lovely analysis. I haven't read the books but what you say makes me wonder. The lord who likes animals and such, maybe it's symbolism for him to fall in love with the "caged bird"? And free the caged bird from her prison? I never thought I would warm to Cressida but I do hope she finds happiness.

Only correction I’d make to your reaction is that when Debling tells Penelope that he’s happy she has such a full life while they are dancing, she’s not thinking he’s just so nice, she’s questioning whether she could be happy with a life without love. Penelope grew up reading romance novels, she’s always dreamed of finding a passionate love and now she’s asking herself if a life of platonic companionship, financial security and an escape from her mom will be enough to satisfy her. I mean the man just told her that he doesn’t think he’ll ever grow to love her because his work means too much to him. He’s nice, and certainly it’s a desirable outcome for the time, but it’s hardly an exciting prospect if you dream of love.
Not only that, he's about to leave for 3 years on a potentially perilous journey. She'd probably have a 50/50 shot of ending up a widow, with no kids. She'd have wealth & loneliness.

Dude, you were literally telling her that you weren't sure you could grow to love her, but then simply because your ego is bruised, you suddendly care about love and feelings??? Make it make sense! Good riddance, Penelope deserves better than a practical marriage. She deserves true love!

There's an interesting discussion about what Debling's travels truly mean. In this episode, he mentions the Northwest Passage, an extremely dangerous one many travelers tried to brave. Most never came back, and those who did had a lot of turmoil. It was a travel of hubris. Even Debling being a vegetarian could be a reference to this, considering trips North were notorious for having meat as a source of nutrition (how would one preserve vegetables?). Which brings us to Penelope. Penelope was the name of Odysseus' wife, waiting for him even as it took a decade for him to return from the Trojan War, tricking suitors so she could remain faithful and not remarry. Her name and the references suggest that, if she were to marry Debling, not only he might never fall for her but he was leaving for three years and most likely dying there. If he did, proving his death would be difficult. There were ships lost around that passage that were only found recently. Which means she would be lost in limbo, forever a widow. She wouldn't be able to remarry until his death was confirmed.
Colin, while completely unhinged, breaking all society protocols and grabbing her mid-dance, probably saved her from a life alone without love.
i guess that could also alude to the fact that Cressida might marry Dublin...as Cressida becomes a young widow in the books

He doesn't expect her to love him, just to not have affections elsewhere. He is pretty selfish but he's been honest about it, he has not once lied about not being able to give love. Considering a lot of people married for convenience rather than love back in those days, I think his offer is pretty reasonable considering his wealthy background.

A lot of viewers don't seem to consider the social norms of the time - it was highly unlikely he'd ever been touched like that before, and certainly not by someone he loved. Members of the opposite sex weren't even allowed to touch hands without being covered by gloves. His expression is one of pure wonder, awe and amazement. I love it. It's a beautiful moment in the show and I think both actors absolutely knocked it out of the park. I'm on pins and needles waiting for Part 2!
Colin is definitely thinking, "She's a goddess", like in the book. Nicola Coughlan said in an interview that the hair stylist on set was constantly making sure Colin's (Luke Newton) hair was perfect. She asked could she reach out and touch his hair and at first was told no, but she fought for that because that was something she felt Penelope would definitely do. 🥰 It's such a fantastic moment. Excuses…excuses. The pacing is just bad. The whole season is rushed and that’s because they decided to make Lady Whistledown a whole part when it honestly could have been a side plot. Also there was no build up for two seasons. Penelope pined after him for two seasons and he acted oblivious to it all. He fell in love with her after a kiss be so for real. I understand that happens in the books but there could have been a better build up to him liking her if they didn’t split it into two parts.
@jahnoyawalker4227 He likes her before the kiss. When he decides to go to the ball, he flashes back to when she bandages his hand and they shared a prolonged touch and a look. Because that's what convinces him she might also have feelings for him. After that bandage scene you can see he's visiblely Jealous when she's talking and laughing to with the guy in the wheelchair. He'll they even play the Jealous in the background of that scene and that's all BEFORE the kiss. The build up for them all happened in the first 2 seasons. Yeah Colin is obvious but there is still build up. They already know each other and take care of each other. Colin takes so many liberties there's no wonder people thought he was courting her. And then Penelope didn't write back to him for a few months and he spiraled so effing hard he came back trying to be someone else. He told her season 2 that her letters kept him grounded and he lost that ground before season 3. He also had decided to take care of her.
Yes the kiss opened his eyes for real. His journal entry was about being surrounded by woman and how he can be physically intimate but still felt distant and lonely. And just kissing Penelope he finally had both the physical and emotional intimacy togther and yeah it blew his mind and drove him crazy.
Placed the last puzzle piece in his relationship with Penelope. She's always the person who believed in him, made him feel appreciated like he said, who he sought out cause he always wanted to see and be around her. And he does this in the other seasons, too.
He was really lonely on his travels despite everything. (You can find some of his journal pages online) The first time he left him and Penelope wrote to each other. And it meant a lot to him. This time he was incredibly lonely and clearly missed her. He only shared about his travels with her when he came back, he lost his way without her, he was literally looking for excuses to be around her this season and then the kiss finally helped him really understand his feelings.
If he says later on that he was always in love with her and didn't realize it I wouldn't be surprised at all. Even just the way he looked at her sometimes in the first 2 seasons. Especially 2.
I cannot tell you how much fun it is to see how invested all of you have been in each season of Bridgerton! It's one of my favorite reactions to a series that I've ever watched. You guys are all so funny and sweet!

i know it's such a small moment in an episode full of crazy ones, but one of my favorite parts of the whole episode is when john stirling turns towards the painting in the bridgerton's drawing room and francesca's face immediately lights up before she follows suit. colin and penelope are a wonderful leading couple, but something about the understated sweetness of francesca and john really gets me

Colin really is Down Bad crying at the club over Pen. One kiss was all it took and then he just couldn't get her out of his head. I think he just finally had that moment of clarity and then he couldn't wait anymore. It deffo escalated quickly but i was happy it did. Hope we get more scenes with them in part 2. As for the look he gives when she strokes his hair in the carriage. I believe this is because of the reverence with which she touches him. He has only been with courtesans in brothels, whom he paid, so none of those encounters had feelings of true intimacy whereas being with Pen is full of emotion, something he hasnt had before. This is alluded to when Pen reads his diary and it says about him being close with other women but still feeling distance.
