Markiplier actually did play a Blue's Clues horror in one of his 3 scary games videos lol. It was clearly parody tho, so I'd love to see the real deal.
Someone already made one for a dread x collection.
That's not fair. Poppy's playtime took nostalgic childhood themes and also turned them into freaking NFTs.

You know what's crazy? Some of those "games based on childhood themes and turn into freaking twisted" are now becoming the childhood games of some kids nowadays. It always awes me whenever I go somewhere and see a little kid, no more than like 5, holding a Huggy Wuggy plush like it was a regular teddy bear.
I saw a couple of those types of kids in my town's yearly festival recently. I really wanted to show them the source material, but I was afraid of getting a punch to the face by their accompanying parent.

there's only two paths for horror games now: you either take the funny jumpscaring mascot route, or the rpg that was actually a metaphor for depression this whole time
Somebody should do an omega troll and make a latter game that reveals itself to be the former a good ways in. Make it cryptic and obscure and obtuse, but engaging, and just string the layer along until they only realize it's the fucking Berenstain Bears 30 hours in.
And then there are the occasional games that seemed to have glitched past both of them into the middle and became their own original thing.
Iron Lung springs to mind for me.
If you want a break from these two subgenres of horror I highly recommend Signalis, it's a really good spiritual successor to stuff like SH2 and classic RE.

Baldi's Basics is more of a parody, and Amanda The Adventurer is genuinely good. It's well acted, genuinely disturbing, has unique puzzles, and doesn't jam itself full of sequel bait.
Poppy and Banban however are shameless cash grabs and UA-camr bait. Not to mention that the games are nearly identical. Go into an abandoned child friendly area, walk down corridors, do dumb puzzles, and run from "scary" monsters. Not to mention the games literally have a merch button ON THE MAIN MENU.

Yeah I think this is that 'Half-Life' effect, where a game comes out doing something new and interesting, does it pretty well, succeeds financially, then the industry tries to pump out clones of it until the next big thing rolls around.
It also applies to stuff like Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D
The entire battle royal thing
You know what I think would be original? If the monsters in a childhood themed horror game were actually quite friendly and humans are the ones you have to watch out for.
I know it's not a conventional pick, but the "evil routes" of Undertale/Deltarune starts to fall into that realm of "horror"; especially knowing how the "pacificst" routes play out.
It's also ironic, because most horror games make you weak to add to the helplessness, but there's a different kind of unsettling when you have the potential to be the most powerful character in the world, and the game "punishes" you for exerting that strength.

(Although to be fair, horror games did tend to do that even before Fnaf. Looking at you Corpse Party.)
I think Baldi’s Basics and Amanda the Adventurer get a pass, both were made by independent developers and had lots of care and effort put into them when the early versions got popular. On the other hand, Poppy Playtime and Garten of Banban were made purely for money and with little effort or attention to detail.
Disagree on poppy playtime. The way things are animated and such have actual polish and such, the devs behind it? Yeah ok they suck, but honestly it’s a really good game even if made by some bad people

I do love a good treasure hunt to look and piece a story together coupled with creepily charming designs, which is probably why I like this FNAF genre. They can be made pretty neat with the right polish and atmosphere, like Bendy or Poppy (in spite of the company's actions for the latter). Even Baldi made the best of its awfully cheap inspirations.
But when Garten of Banban started buzzing, I think that's when they wore the gimmick down to its thinnest. Uninspired designs, bare-minimum graphics, a snorefest of gameplay, 'chapters' farted out as quickly as possible to cash in the algorithm... I *really* felt the fatigue in this one.

I think out of those examples, FNAF, Baldi and that blues clues concept are the only ones that seem actually original AND fun. FNAF and the concept are self explanatory, so i will explain why i like baldi. Baldi isn't scary because "oh scary man chase you and jumpscare you", the creators even said its only a mild horror game. The only freaky characters in the whole game are Test (well hes just more unnerving), Mrs Pomp (god i hate her) and Glitch (just freaky). Baldi is too goofy and uplifting to be a proper scary character (I mean who is scared of a dude that says "Check out this song! its called Baldi's funtime song! I wrote it myself!", and Null is just more sad than scary, and when he tries to be scary he fails, like when he said "destroy the game! destroy the game! destroy the game!" backwards and then says "i-is that scary? isnt that, like, considered spooky?"
Baldi's supposed to be a nice guy, who's been turned/corrupted into what he is. I mean look at the post-Null eastereggs.
I can't believe market plier didn't get the easter egg in Kindergarten Baby 3 by putting the phone at the exact coordinates where the body of Tim Tim was found according to the lore detailed in MatPat's 5 hour commentary about the game being related to the Ku Klux Klan's rituals.

This year has been overflowing with amazing horror games. Dead Space and RE4 Remakes, Amnesia the Bunker, Outlast Trials, DREDGE, Sons Of The Forest and those are just off the top of my head. What are you on about?
Oh yes, old games are better because they are nostalgic
before fnaf, many horror games were slender clones, amnesia clones or sonic.exe clones lol
@@ultgamercw6759 bro probably only watches the surface and starts to assume things
@@ultgamercw6759it’s almost like that is why I quoted Shrek
You forgot bendy, the unique game that takes nostalgic childhood themes and turns them fricking twisted!
damn a game where blues clues goes murder mystery is actually brilliant wth
Lore in an Indie Horror game is basically a Battlepass
Imagine if they did do a Blue’s Clues horror game, but it psychological. Instead of constant jumpscares, the game relies on the already dreary atmosphere and lore that is based upon something like the original host of the show leaving.
This can work with any TV show, especially ones that got cancelled or ended, but anything works I think.
I’m sick of Matpat just eating up all those Fnaf-mimic horror games instead of doing more original lore videos of actual games that have actual lore
yeah like,he made bendy videos,im good i like bendy,he makes amanda, hmm fine,i think its a lil unique, then poppy playtime,a lil who cares but ill be fair,i think the lore its FINE,just not as good as bendy in my opinion (ironic),but then garten of ban ban and the Roblox games and at that point im like ok buddy, literally who cares
Not a matpat fan but i rather he do this and try to give those bad video game an "soul" than his old theory like "Is MaRiO a PhYsCoPaTh????!??!?!?"
@@Wolfhardt What I really want to see more of are "Nerd Playthroughs". They're like regular let's plays but the person playing is an expert on the game and is constantly giving you interesting facts and development tidbits. Like a second-hand developers commentary. I don't know of many, but VoidBurger did some really good ones on the Silent Hill series. An equivalent for Nier sounds exactly like what you're craving but alas, I have no recommendations to give. Unfortunately such content takes a lot to make and isn't favored by UA-cam's recommendation algorithms.
Also, didn't ol' Matty boy just do a video on the lore of "Just Dance"? That doesn't seem to hit any of your points, unless that game's seen a resurgence I don't know about. Eh, you were probably just being hyperbolic for dramatic effect and I'm just being pedantic. Regardless, those videos are more like Junk Food anyhow. Easy to consume, but ultimately unsatisfying. I think that's fine if people like it, but I also don't think them doing a theory on something more niche would change that.
TLDR: I don't think Game Theory could do Nier justice. But there are other people out there doing more specialized content, so such a video/series might already exist, buried deep in the youtube algorithm somewhere. If you go looking, I wish you luck!
@@Wolfhardt Then I would agree.
@@DrHammerr I feel like if MatPat tried to make a DrakeNieR-verse theory video, it would be the same low quality as the one time he attempted a video on Hollow Knight.
The same one where he said that the Knight was the actual Pale King reincarnated, as opposed to one of his and the White Lady's numerous children, leading to mossbag having to make a reply video eviscerating the theory. Also doesn't help how MatPat started that video with a gag where he gasses the Knight and Hornet.
"So how is the gameplay?"
Well there are spooky nostalgic things
they turned the nostalgic things freakin twisted !!
I bet the Hello Neighbor devs were annoyed that their game wasn’t mentioned too, lmao.
I suggest Inscryption. It doesn't try to "twist" anything, it doesn't rely on jumpscares, and yet it has a legitimately unsettling feeling about it.
Inscryption is absolutely amazing. 10/10.
Circletoons Hd sure knows how to turn nostalgic childhood games and turn them freaking twisted
Amnesia The Bunker felt like a breath of fresh air after this wave of FNaF clones.
Nah, calling Baldi's a FNaF clone is crazy.
The jumpscare actually scared me
The main (and only) gameplay mechanic: Walking
fnaf singlehandedly set the indie horror game scene back creatively by 7 years and you cant convince me otherwise
Blaming that all on FNAF isn't exactly fair. At the time it came out all horror games were walking simulators with unavoidable jumpscares. Lazy devs just wanted to capture the new hotness
@@danielbarnes1241also this trope has existed long before fnaf was a thing and was already a big thing in creepypastas before it.
I can, developers got lazy in concept design and realized audiences would react positively to this already popular thing. That's not the games fault, that's how you put food on the table.
Ok, I'm going to convince you otherwise, it didn't set it back 7 years, it just made it so that it hasn't aged in 7 years
Heeeh, that's forgetting that before FnaF was a thing, all horror games were either Slenderman clones, Amnesia clones or Sonic.exe clones
"Ooohh~ Collect the 7 bingledoofs to vin da game! But watch out! Springledorf the evil is looking for you! So spooky!"
FNaF is like the Shrek of indie horror games. It was good when it came out, and still hold up today, but now everyone in the industry wants to copy what they did instead of why they did it.
im glad i'm not the only one who realized that twisting children's things into horror
has been happening a lot recently
That's called a subgenre
been more than half a decade and fnaf’s influence still reigns
i agree, Whinny the poh 2022 was the best movie. i like how it took nostalgic childhood themes and turned them freakin twisted
Ok but unironically a Blue Clues detective-style horror game would be kinda neat
Ok but Amanda was at least more creative with its execution than the others
Actually...a blues clue theme horror game could be interesting if, instead of looking for the clues you need to somehow avoid them.
You forgot bendy where they take nostalgic childhood themes and turn them freakin twisted.
or slendytubbies where they take nostalgic childhood themes and turn them freaking twisted.
or hello neighbor, where they take nostalgic childhood themes and turn then frwaking twisted.
or even better: Choo Choo Charles where.....you guessed it! take nostalgic childhood themes and turn them FREAKING twisted!
or duck hunt, where they take childhood themes and turn them freakin twisted.
Or Tattletail where they take nostalgic childhood themes and turn them freakin twisted!
Or Rainbow friends where they take nostalgic childhood themes and turn them freakin twisted!
Or Doors, where uhh. its just twisted.
to be fair, there was also that one game that took the idea of a train spider and turned it frickin twisted
that blues clues game was..
*FRICKIN TWISTED*
I feel bad for Baldi’s because now it’s grouped in with a group of games that it’s parodying
Cereal Mascot: Collect a prize!
*Kid collects all of the prizes*
Cereal Mascot: Thanks, kid! Now, I can create a prize army!
*Cereal Mascot brings toys to life*
Cereal Mascot: Kill him!
*Kid kills the Cereal Mascot*
Nostalgic childhood themes and turns em' freakin' twisted! 🗿
Blues Clues already had an Indie Horror game based on it called Chip’s Tips
I can't believe y'all forgot that Markiplier already played a Blues Clues horror game called Feev Neets at Blees Clees.
Baldi is at least a parody, and an actually fun game to play
What's wrong with Baldy? It has original mechanics despite using the cliche of turning 90s teaching games into something twisted.
Also, BB+ is more of a comedy/parody than a horror game, atm.
I find it ironic that these days a traditional horror game feels more original than a mascot horror game
That's not fair!Iron Lung took the submarine minigame from Final Fantasy 7 and turned it freakin twisted!
