Which laptop display is your favourite?
IPS
120hz 4k oled
ASUS G16
I’m obsessed with OLED displays. There’s no going back if you try it once.
@@vikaluksenaWhich laptops do have 4K 120fps OLED? I’ve seen 2K, 2.8K, 3K once with higher fps displays but 4K 120 on OLED is crazy
I hope manufacturers would stop shipping gaming laptops with 45% NTSC (60 ish sRGB) because colors suck at these panels.
Who is still using them in their laptops? Even the cheapest Asuses or Lenovos have 100% sRGB.
@krzysztofwozny9742 There's a lot in another country tho, some cheap tuf and msi for example
its too bad MacBook Pros aren't gaming laptops, because those displays are pretty nice.
They certainly are! Can't wait until they do OLED
They have horrible response time and are only 120hz and blooming is also noticable in a dark room but have the benefit of sustained 1000 nits which is really nice to work outdoors. Source: i have a 16" macbook pro
@@videostar348Agree with the response time, never really noticed much blooming on my particular unit though. Even in a dark room.
Apple displays in general are good looking for content consumption, creation, and general productivity tasks and yes, I agree that they are good looking. The only issue (and people have pointed it out in other comments here) is the ghosting due to terrible response times. This will not be easy for Apple to fix in their Mini-LED panels.
There are always tradeoffs when trying to optimize panels for both visual fidelity and response times. Gaming laptop Mini LED panels have good (not great, but good) response times and look great, but not quite as good as mini-led panels made for content creation/consumption like the ones from Apple or professional content creation monitors. OLED panels look excellent and have excellent response times in general, but are just very dim in comparison to mini-LED panels.
There will definitely be improvements in the future, and I can't wait to see what's coming. MicroLED is ideally the perfect panel type b ut is still obscure and extremely expensive.
They will be crazy good when they switch to tandem Oleds from the new iPad pros
Great video. Would have loved to see you talk about the disadvantages of each
Ex: Burn in on OLED etc
Pixel shifting solved that problem 2 years ago, in the case of OLEDS
@@faresabushanab3669Mitigated, not solved. There will still be burn in in time. Static huds in games are culprits, and the pixel shift moves pixel 1 pixel up right down left, so if the hud covers several pixels, how will that help in the long run?
@@steveguy3 fair point. Perhaps I was thinking of QD - OLED, my mistake bro
Tbh only people afraid of oled burn are people who don't own oled .. the quality increased so much lately over the years. I've got an oled panel with giga thousands of gaming and never got any issues. Of course you will have exceptions but that's the status right now = exceptions
If I had infinite money and could change my monitor every 2 years, I would choose OLED of course. However the possibility of burn-in is still pretty high. So for a monitor I would go with mini-led. I have an oled TV for gaming and movies etc and it is great... but for a monitor use I still avoid them. The fact that I would spend so much money and in 2 to 4 years it is almost guaranteed that the screen will have visible burn and this is something unfixable... and the screen will be useless... it just puts me off big time! If you use it without the safety features like a normal monitor, it is doubtful that it would last for even a year without burn-in. I do not know if companies honor their warranty for 2-3 years... and just send you a new monitor, ot if they find excuses to avoid doing that. But even 1000$ for a 3-4 year lifespan it doesn't worth it imho...
ive never heard of the term "IPS-Level"
imo, mini-led backlight is better than oled for all use cases
Ya its a marketing term. In the past it was used to disguise TN panels but they have improved over the years
Yeah IPS-level definitely one of the more shady sounding terms. I don't like it when people say "mini LED vs IPS" because almost all the mini-led panels in laptops are IPS, just with mini-led backlighting instead of a diffused, edge-lit backlight. Mini-LED VA panels have some really amazing contrast, but the colors and response times are not quite up there with IPS, although the higher end ones are very close.
"mini-led backlight is better than oled for all use cases" - like for blooming? Or for worse black levels? Or for less vibrant colours? Or for worse response times? Only thing miniLED's got over OLED is brightness and that won't be for long. The new lenovo slim 7x launched earlier this week with an OLED display that goes up to 1000 nits, basically matching miniLED in brightness levels while delivering better contrast, colours, response times and an absence of blooming.
@@fidelisitor8953 while I also disagree with OP about it being better than oled for all use cases. OLED will likely still be a behind mini LED in terms of brightness.
That 1000 nit peak number is likely in a 1% or 5% window, which is plenty for most people... unless they do their work outside a lot.
I do a lot my productivity in places with a lot of sunlight, and OLED laptops just can't keep up in terms of brightness in a large window. I really hope that changes and the high brightness AMOLED technology that phones have can become easier to produce for larger screens like on laptops.
I'm ok with both mini led and oled. They look great and are getting easier to find in laptops and TV's.
Ya im a huge fan with either or. I prefer oled but I wouldn't complain if it was Mini-led either
I would love to see a 16inch laptop with: OLED, 4K resolution for good pixel density, HDR , 10 bit, 240hz, 1000 nits brightness across the entire screen, multitouch, anti- reflective coating on a glossy display.
Beautiful. Super informative and straight to the point. One thing that's a downside of going to a Low Response Time display. You'll notice everything on something like a MacBook/iPad MiniLED. 😂😂😂 Got accustomed to 0.5Ms response time, Apple's MiniLED 30ms+ response time just hurt to see all the time.
Thanks! Ya, once you get down to a low response time especially with gaming its hard to go back
@@MatthewMoniz OLED is just the superior experience. It's the biggest reason why I got the new iPad Pro 13. Tandom OLED is the future, can't wait to see what releases in the coming years!
@@LAFadhel Lenovo just launched a new snapdragon laptop with a 1000 nits OLED display. Probably not tandem OLED but it looks pretty exciting. Ooh I can't wait for gaming laptops to use such fantastic OLED displays 🤤
@@fidelisitor8953 The future for Windows Laptops are bright. But, the IPad Pro m4 is my main computing device. I cannot wait for Framework 16 to get OLED.

Hello I am looking to buy a gaming laptop and I need help. I am looking at Asus zephyrus g16 i9 ultra 16gb ram 4070 or the Asus strix 18 i9-13980hx 16gb 4070. Which one has a better display and which one would you buy.
Thanks for making this video, with a lot of the new exciting panel technologies that laptops have now, it's only more confusing for people who are fortunate enough to have a lot of choice when picking out a new laptop.
I personally absolutely love Mini-LED panels because I am a sucker for super bright panels with a lot of contrast, like the AMOLED panels in phones. Sadly, the closest we can get to that is with Mini-LED, which while isn't the best solution, is a great solution.
I really hope to see MicroLED panels come to laptops soon, because they look very promising. Even if the first few laptops with MicroLED panels are uber expensive, it would be an amazing fact that A LAPTOP with a MicroLED panel is available for purchase. That tech will slowly trickle down into gaming laptops, and we would be able to game with amazing response times and amazing visual fidelity. The future looks bright for panel technology (no pun intended).
How is the display of Legion 7i, is there a disadvantage of it being matt finish
I beg to differ. IPS Level displays, more often than not, do not offer good response times. I have an ASUS ROG FLOW X13 2022. It has IPS-LEVEL display. Contrary to what you have said, it has very very good color reproduction and gamut, but it has terrible, terrible ghosting, caused by low response times of VA or TN, especially on darker backgrounds. ASUS and other brands should be transparent on marketing as they should tell the response times of laptop displays, otherwise, IPS-LEVEL doesn't mean anything, as they can be marginally different.
I’m absolutely obsessed with my Zephyrus g16 2024.. it’s a phenomenal laptop. The display is so beautiful
I recently replaced my Scar 16 2023's mini LED panel with the 2024 one and I absolutely love it. Went from 1024 to 2048 dimming zones while still keeping the 1200 nit peak brightness. I hope mini LED panels can one day get better response times.
I'm picking that one up. After all the research, it seems like the laptop of the year. I couldn't look at a mini LED display. OLED is so much better.
@@niko1even do you just get the panel and replace? or you need some additional parts? I'm using 2022 Zephyrus Duo with 512 dimming zones, planning to replace with a newer panel
@@davidohhhhhhh568 I simply bought the panel and a new bezel, I then:
- Ripped off the old bezel, it's kinda useless after you take it off because the adhesive on it gets damaged. That is why you need a new bezel.
- Removed the old panel by pulling on the pull tab adhesives, then unplugging the 40 pin EDP connector.
- tested the new panel by connecting it. Then after verifying that there are no defects, installed it via applying new pull tab adhesive.
- Finally, I put the new bezel on and that's done.
I am not sure about the zephyrus duo, as the anatomy of that laptop is more complicated than that of the Scar laptops. There is a higher risk of damaging a stray ribbon cable when opening and removing stuff, so i would be extremely cautious. You will also have to verify that it also uses the same 40-pin EDP cable with the same pinout, so do your research beforehand.
@@miniDrew4which one bruh? I'm fed up of back light bleeding on ips laptoos that cost shit of money
mini LED is the best middle point
better black levels
response time is good enough for non eSports players
doesn't suffers from burning within a year like OLED ("burn in are things of the past" is such a BS marketing)
Ehhh burn-in does happen but not in a year.. Most OLED panels have methods to prevent/delay burn in and we use our laptops in bursts compared to a TV which is on all day. But yes MIni-LED is great if you want an excellent display without having to worry about burn-in. I have a lot of OLED displays and I dont think one of them has ever burned in.
Dose asus rog strix scar g18 with nebula non hdr have mini led ??
I think the framework 16 is best for this, since you can adapt to whatever you need as new generations get released
That's true!
But veery expensive
@@alawiSahel for now but in the future it won't be
I have one. It's great. It's not perfect, but I use it as my daily driver. As somebody who doesn't use Windows (because of Windows 11 and the entire shift with all of the spyware and adware creeping into Windows since Windows), there was no other god Linux option. I literally returned FOUR laptops because of various issues on Linux, like non working speakers or broken keyboard backlighting. Framework not only officially supports Linux, they also have a working fingerprint sensor in Linux. No other laptop I've had has that working in Linux, unless it's a ThinkPad.
And purely Linux focused manufacturers had either uncompetitive options with 16 : 9 screens, below average build quality, and lower resolutions, or no US ANSI keyboard on many otherwise good options (and very high shipping costs).
And of course, the repairability and upgradability is a must for me (especially the repairability).
@afd1040 I hope so, but the issue is right now I think with the initial price of the laptop and the possible prices of the upgrades might not save any money versus buying a new laptop with the upgraded specs which I think is a better choice as you will get a whole new laptop with new design and every thing 💸
Wallpaper link please 🥺❤
Yes, i want it too :)))
I'm not sure why you called this a "buying guide" about what "beginners to gaming laptops NEED to know about laptop displays". It doesn't talk about aspect ratios, color spaces, weaknesses of various displays (such as burn-in, mini-led bloom/halo, energy consumption, PWM), differences between resolutions like FHD vs QHD, etc. Starting off with the F16 and talking about how all the 16:10 panels have superior 100% sRGB values while not mentioning the new 2024 TUF A15 (with 7535HS/RTX 2050) that has 60% sRGB 16:9 panel ...is not wrong or lying but I feel it may lure people new to this stuff into a false sense of complacency about their new device only to find out that it doesn't work well with their photoediting (for example).
I have watched almost every video of yours for the past 12 months since I had to buy my first gaming laptop last year. The experience SUCKED. It was confusing, and prices/specs made little sense. Reviewers like you, Jarrod's Tech, Notebookcheck made it better. I know it's inevitable that everyone in this space have to work with sponsors but this video was a weird one.
hi my friend, I have an awesome laptop with i7 13700 HX and RTX 4060 with an awesome IPS mate 400 ntis 100% SRGB 165Hz with G-Sync and HDR it is the omen 16 Transcend i bought it for 2500 Dollars but i want to make sure that 7 ms for response time is good ? is it good ?
Guys. I bought 2 legion 5 pro 2023 (ive returned one and got another )and boy.. panels were awful regarding to ips blow and backlight bleeding. I've read people are just "getting used to it " but I'm NOT getting used to that with that price! My old ips panel it's better on back light bleed testing! Wth lenovo!
I've waited 6 years to upgrade my laptop waiting for OLED to become mainstream waiting for the price to not be outrageous. I have waited and waited but I wait still to see whether it is worth moving to ARM and whether this Snapdragon chip is worth it and in the end I might not end up with OLED because I hate Microsoft spyware sorry recall and may just end up paying the apple tax to avoid that horrible no good degusting tool. Every generation of windows gets worse and they shove more ads into it to boot.
Oled is to bright
Ips is good for ur eyes
What do you think about the display of the Lenovo legion 7i glacier white? I want it for work (programming) and gaming (usually online fps games)
That’s a regular ips display. It’s solid!
the screen is great , but not fun to type on hot keyboard and 2h max on battery i had to return it

Dont partner with ASUS! They are scammers
I been looking at the legion 9i 165hz mini led would this be good for gaming as well for refresh rates
All laptops you feature on your show are too expensive
I gave my old 3050ti Ryzen 5 laptop to my GF. I bought myself a Ryzen 9 RX 7700S laptop. It plays games in 2560x1600 way over 60 with most games easily. Asus A16 Advantage Edition. QHD
All i know chinese level is garbage
Getting my first gaming laptop next week. I’m having a hard time deciding between the new 18” razer blade with the 300hz display or the ROG scar 18”. Any suggestions?
After going with Mini LED on my 2024 Razer blade 18, every other display besides OLED looks like dog shit to me. I could never go back. BTW that was the Strix SCAR 18 you showed, big difference then the standard Strix 18 which does not have a Mini LED panel. You really need to start paying more attention to detail in your content, I have seen multiple videos now providing incorrect information. For this reason I can't subscribe to you.
Yup thats how I felt when I experienced MIIN-LED for the first time. I mean a still dont mind a GOOD IPS panel but ya mini-led or OLED going forward.
I wish QLED displays were a bit more common in laptops. Samsung, as far as i know, only
implemented it in their galaxy book flex but then discontinued it.
SDC OLED displays are the best thing to ever happen to gaming laptops.
16" WQXGA (2560 x 1600) 16:10 IPS 240 Hz is it good for Gaming laptop
I'm sticking to mini-led forever after buying my scar 18.
The Scar 18 has a fantastic display
Still not oled
I didn't, just like watching your videos.
So IPS-Level panels have less response time than IPS? I thought it is other way around because I’ve noticed some ghosting on those TUF models which use IPS-Level panels
It heavily depends on the individual panel. Many 1080p 300 hz panels have around an average 3 ms or less response time.
On the other hand, some 1080 120/144 hz panels can be absolutely garbage in terms of both color gamut and response time (such as on budget gaming laptops).
Thank you for the clarification😊
You’re welcome 😊
I'm a huge fan of OLED but one thing to be weary of is PWM flickering. It's a whole rabbit hole that might be worth diving down. Gaming laptops have a huge PWM flickering problem imo.
Yes, theres PWM flicker but it usually doesnt kick in until below 50% brightness. With OLED laptops usually not getting that bright, most people keep brightness at 50% or above.
@@MatthewMoniz there are definitely some panels like that but you'd be surprised how many have PWM flicker at all brightness levels. The OLED panel on the Legion Slim 5 14.5" has PWM at all brightness levels, sadly. Lots of Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops with OLED displays have 60Hz PWM flicker at all brightness levels too, which is just unacceptable. It's a real issue imo!
@@TWitWoW Only 10% of people are sensitive to PWM flickering and gaming laptops like the 2024 g14 and g16 have 980Hz PWM frequency so even less people will be affected.
@@fidelisitor8953 oh no doubt those Zephyrus G14/G16 displays are fantastic. No qualms there!
I used to have an MSI GT77 laptop with a mini-led display. When I looked at the laptop for a longer time, I got a terrible headache. When I lowered the brightness more, the picture was so weird, but my head still hurt. Maybe it can be caused by Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation). When I look at the IPS display, I don't have these problems. Do you think OLED will be the same as mini-led? What do you think about it?
Actually OLED is better for your eyes than ips
I have the Asus Scar 18 and my eyes are burning after a couple of hours. On my 2019 Asus Scar III with 240hz IPS panel its much better for my eyes. I will buy the Zephyrus G16 with OLED soon.
@@nostric4237 Well, I don't know if the oled display will be better from the point of view of headache and eye pain... Do you have experience with oled? Have you had a chance to try longer use? I'm afraid that it won't go from mud to puddle.
Oh yes Asus.....
4:35 less blooming on Mini Led?
Compared to ips? Yes
0:17 sorry but I had to watch another video real quick before finishing yours. 😊
All kidding aside. As much as I like a bright screen, OLED is the way to go if you want the best picture quality. Wait until they have QD-OLED in labtop or portable monitor screens. It will be game over for any other displays out there. Mini LED was popular on TVs until OLEDs got more affordable. Once that happened mini LED was considered mid-tier instead. Now there are micro LED displays which looks so good and competes with QD-OLED but are way brighter.
Great tutorial, thanks Matt.
