  • Steven Wilson’s highly ambitious seventh solo album, the 65-minute-long 'The Harmony Codex,' takes the listener on a journey through melodic space rock, jittery electronica, drum and bass-influenced jazz and ambient synthscapes. For the English sonic adventurer, it’s hopefully an album “that you can listen to for the 100th time, and you’re like, ‘Oh, I never noticed that before.’

He would never have put the title track “The Harmony Codex” on an album prior to this album. How glad I am that he did now. I can't stop listening to it. When I drive to work in the morning, when I drive home at night and when I'm working at home. I don't know exactly why, but there's something about that song that makes me feel like I'm listening to life itself.

How lucky are we to live in the same generation as Steven Wilson!!!??? Love 'The Harmony Codex', and just about all of his other solo work, and Porcupine Tree!! I'm 69 years old, and I plan on listening to this new album another 300 or more times!! Both the records, and the Blu-ray!! 🍻🎶👍

Hi there! Steven Wilson is by far one of my favorite musicians.
I’m 31 so must of my childhood was listening to CDs and cassettes, I can definitely relate to feeling of hearing an album alone in the dark, I just bought the Harmony Codex vinyl to have that experience again 🩷

I'm an artist, painting and creating dioramas and such, I can't listen in a dark room, but listening while I'm working is great meditation, concentration, inspiration. I can absorb the music and create while it fills the room. SW's work (including PT) is some of the greatest "background" music for creating art. And it's unbelievable that he seems to be getting better. Not many musical artists do...lucky for us, SW is a vegan and wants to live and love. I can't wait to hear what he has for us next round.

HAH! I knew it . . . audiophile. Musical genius, music lover, audiophile . . . kind of figured that for Wilson. Love this interview, and the way he describes how he listened to music in a dark room and just bacame enthralled. Same for me, has been that way since I was a teen, and still is at 57. I agree with what Steven said that this type of thing is probably the minority now, but keep doing what you do! There are still plenty of us that spend a great deal of thought, planning, time and money on a great hifi, put it in a dedicated room and just listen without any other distractions.
The Harmony Codex will certainly be spending hours and hours and hours on my system, it is an AMAZING recording, so smooth dynamic and interesting. I stream it, I play the CD, and I spin the Vinyl...just to compare. I'm already excited for the next album!
    Cheers!

I always listen to music as he is describing on a very good system and I appreciate his efforts to achieve the best recording he can. When trying to describe his music to someone I always say well its Steven Wilson music and recommend a certain album to start with depending on their general tastes. I am astounded that most of the time I also get the response when asked what music I like and I say Steven Wilson and they say "WHO" . He would have been at the top if he had started 20 years before he did.

I'm glad to hear SW's answer to the last question. He used to name Bowie/Bush/Prince/etc. as musicians who kept reinventing themselves, and him aspiring to do the same, but often seemingly in the way of not wanting to repeat himself musically. What I feel with this album is that it "sounds like Steven Wilson" among other things in the sense that particular hooks, piano chords, vocal lines and other aspects fold back into earlier work (both solo and other projects). And I believe that's what he gets at in this answer.

Thanks for the interview, it's always a pleasure to hear Steven's attitude to music and his demand for the - I have to say - "oldshool" music listening. Hopefully in Steven's fan base there are lot of people who still listening albums in the rigth mode. Listening on good audio or a good earphone the whole album in once, focusing to the music only switch off the disturbing activities.
He mentioned Trevorn Horn (who "invented the eigthies" just check the Art Of Noise, if you haven't checked in the last 40 years :-)), a fantastic producer, musician, a pioneer. Steven did/doing the same, producing (audopile) remixes, great music solo and with Porcupine Tree.

To me, there are 4 auteur music gods: Alan Parsons, Jeff Lynne, Trevor Horn and Steven Wilson.

That’s nice to hear, because there’s so much noise on structure… verse, chorus, bridge …. on and on and on, Things are so goddamn nervous now, every four bars or less is a change, fuckin hell…just give me Eno-‘Thursday Afternoon’ any-day…

Speaking on audio quality. OK maybe I am of the minority who has a nice audio system. (And by nice I mean a 34 year old Denon receiver and a pair of Elac speakers. That's the system I listen to the most - It sounds wonderful). I have noticed how good Steven's music sounds and I appreciate the effort.
