This track is actually about drug addiction, specifically cocaine, and how it takes over your life. Also, this is why I love rock and metal. Every instrument is felt and it just hits, no matter the emotion they’re trying to express.
Actually it's specifically about heroin (which can also be snorted and chopped up on a mirror). Cliff got the inspiration for the song from observing an old bandmate. Also it has been said that the two solo's reflect the high that come from opioids, calm and melodic at first but when the high ends you're in a frantic race to get your next fix
@@derekclark254 Yes the crash, meaning you are coming down from the high. Cocaine is an upper, it males you manic with energy. So the two solos should be reversed.
James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) said he wrote 'Master of Puppets' having experienced people in the scene snorting up lines of white powder and being too scared to try it... The album cover depicted the 'master' pulling strings... but the album also has a song called 'Disposable heroes' about how young soldiers are sacrificed to wars... and that was depicted w/ the crosses lined up like in a veterans' cemetery capped w/ a soldier's helmet and military tags. However, the members of Metallica did fall to vices and substance abuse in their career... James Hetfield to alcohol abuse... lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and drummer Lars Ulrich to certain 'white powders'... and alcohol... and their bassist Jason Newsted (who joined in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton, who played on 'Master of Puppets') admitted to abusing prescription painkillers in the band before he quit the band in 2001.
I love that you don't pause it too much. My only recomendation with Metallica songs is to listen to the lyrical videos so you can see the lyrics. Their lyrics are always deep and have a place in society still today. This is as close to a perfect song lyrically and musically at telling a story as you will see in music.
As many have said, this is arguably their finest album. Disposable Heroes & Welcome Home (Sanitarium) are 2 more highly polished gems from this masterpiece. Enjoy your journey!
Wow! I remember buying the cassette tape of this in 1986. Used a butter knife to remove my mothers older car stereo to install one with a cassette player. Great reaction! Great to see the younger generation appreciate this style of music.
The first time I heard this, I was like 15, high, and drunk and all lit up in some basement with friends, and your reaction is exactly the same as mine was. The guitars. Songwriting. All of it. Welcome to Metallica. It changed my life.
I remember I took this album to music class in the fifth grade or we could bring a music and listen to and everybody looked at me like I was freaking crazy when we were playing this song because metal was not in the main stream at the time
The cover is related to the songs , the helmet is for disposable heroes the hand is for the master of puppets , the graves is because the all album is about destruction like battery or damage inc.
This song is so important for music. Some of the best guitar riffs ever recorded. Not by technicality, just by how damn powerful and cool they sound. Learning this song, getting inspired by this song, has been part of the journey of countless guitar players from all over the world. And probably will continue to be for many more years to come.
I was 20 or 21 when this came out. I reconnected with a friend from high school, and we literally spent a decade doing everything in this song. Cocaine is a HELL of a drug. Finally got away from it. NEVER going back. Great song!!!!

Hey, just want to give you a little mic tip. The Blue yeti you are using has a mic in the front and back, not the top. Best to have it in cardiod and the Blue logo pointing towards you. Right now the way you have it, it's picking up sound at the desk which is why when you tap on the desk or put your elbows on your desk it's very audible.
Back in the mid/late 80's i used to sit in my parents car in the driveway for about 30-40 minutes every morning waiting on the bus to show up. Was a good way to keep warm in the winter, but also i'd jam to my favorite tunes to pass the time. I listened to this album every morning for my entire 8th grade year.
Battery, Sanitarium,Disposable Heroes, and Orion(Instrumental) are all great songs on this album. Be sure to check out Fade To Black and Creeping Death on the Ride the Lightning album🤘🤪🤘
The song “disposable heroes” is about soldiers and their fate. That’s the tie in to part of the album cover. They’ve actually done a few songs in that vein
The album cover is a mashup of several songs. Battery, as in military Battery, along with Disposable Heroes is a representation of the crosses. The Hands and the strings are for Master of Puppets, and the red color is for Orion, as in Orion's Belt. Damage Inc, could be included with the military aspect. This album deals with a lot of being controlled and fighting out against it. MOP is a strong focus on drug addiction. Orion is my favorite Metallica song. It's an instrumental. My favorite album is ...And Justice for All. But this album is solid with every song being it's own masterpiece.
UMMM I have listened to this since the day it came out, battery is about domestic violence, master is about drugs, disposable is about how we treat our heroes, etc etc
Battery isn't about war or DV, Battery is the name of a street in san Francisco where Metallica used to play at a night club in their early years the song is about the band and their fans coming together to release their pent up aggression via thrash metal
The album cover, with most of the song's subject matter is that of someone, something always having control of your life, how you live and how you die.
The song is about drug addiction. The line “chop your breakfast on a mirror” is a reference to cutting lines of cocaine on a mirror to snort. The guitar sounds remind me of how a person’s life spirals out of control the longer the addiction goes on.
I love that you "get it"! You really understand what musicians are trying to say through their music! I love that. Most reaction channels cant connect those dots.
I remember my first time hearing this song. I was given the album when I helped my someone into a house they bought and the cd had been left behind in the garage. I brought it home, but I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it so I listened to “Orion” first and I was absolutely blown away. So I listened to the rest of the album and I loved it. I think my favorite song besides “Master” is “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”
The album cover is referencing two of the songs on the album. The puppet strings obviously referencing the title track, and the unnamed graves, the dog tags and army helmet referencing the song Disposable Heroes, a song about sending soldiers off to die in the front lines.
One thing i love about how this song was structured is that a third stanza hits you when you least expect a third stanza........and done very masterfully. Same with "Seek and Destroy", the very first Metallica song i learned to play on the guitar Tabletures.
That special song you talked about....for me that was Disposable Heroes. My dad picked up a cassette of MoP somewhere without a case. So I plugged it in and (unknowingly) played side B. My musical world would never be the same, I was hooked.
The meaning of the Song Master of puppets is about Addiction to drugs and the drug being the puppet master of the addict. The Album cover likely has more to do with the song Disposable heroes which is on the same album. However there are strong themes on most songs on the album about being a slave to something sush as Drugs, Mental illnes, Rage, Religion, The Military etc
The song is written from the perspective of the drug. It's in 3 parts. 1- craving/needing the high. 2- (where the change-up happens) is the high setting in and the euphoric feeling it gives. 3- once the high is gone you're back to needing/craving it again. It describes the destructive loop people get trapped in during addiction.
I recently got out of prison. I did 6yrs on a 7. Prison is another world. Most of my time was spent on Mark W. Stiles unit in Beaumont Tx. The devil roamed around and had many inmates kill themselves ( drugs, depression, feeling guilt ) I dont wanna say how many took their lifes( young guys) but it was over like 100 inmates. I attended church on and off. The Hope Chapel it was called put on a two part play by inmates on the real situations that happened. We came together and prayed including TDCJ staff, inmates, officers, medical staff and the whole prison and i think a whole year went by and there was not one suicide. Im blessed to making it out of that dungeon. I been out for almost a month and doing very good with God's help. The reason i say this is because at the end of the play the inmates did this song 🎵 and it souned exactly like Metallica. I was commenting on other video while this one starting playing
Song is a masterpiece lyrics, music all of it. Hardcore at first guy wanting his fix, mellows out showing he got his fix then gets crazy again showing addicts mental state needed more

The entire album is about the concept of control. Being controlled, like in this song being controlled by drugs, to fighting for control, like in Welcome Home Sanatarium, from this album.

Saw this band live 4 or 5 times by the time I was your age. I'm old af lol
She needs to delve into a lot more! Just my opinion 😉
Essential listening! Required for any collection!
Twisting your mind ,, and smashing your dreams🤘🤘
What a tune, takes me straight back to high school
One of my favorite bands of all time 🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿
This song has sooooo many bars
The meaning is addiction control of any sort. Very symbolic
These guys made it with no radio play, no MTV play in the 80's. They didn't become mainstream until the black album.
The album cover: It is a composite and has aspects of different songs on the album combined into it.
When the instrumental intro riff comes back in for a second time after the first chorus 🔥
I think my favorite song besides “Master” is “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”
most iconic metal song of all time? for sure one of them..
This song is talking about the power of addiction. I wish you would've been around back then. What a time!
While the album is called Master of Puppets the cover represents the song Disposable Heroes
NEVER PAUSE DURING THE SOLO!!!!!!!
The Master is Addiction.
Each verse is a chemical.
Alcohol, Cocaine, and Heroine.
The music follows the cycle of Addiction.
Creeping death should be your next metallica reaction🔥🤘
That special song you talked about....for me that was Disposable Heroes. My dad picked up a cassette of MoP somewhere without a case. So I plugged it in and (unknowingly) played side B. My musical world would never be the same, I was hooked.
this is the best song of metallica ever.
Love the entire album and my go to sesh song is Welcome Home🤘☁️☁️☁️
The meaning of the Song Master of puppets is about Addiction to drugs and the drug being the puppet master of the addict. The Album cover likely has more to do with the song Disposable heroes which is on the same album. However there are strong themes on most songs on the album about being a slave to something sush as Drugs, Mental illnes, Rage, Religion, The Military etc
This is first Metal song I heard when I was in High school then I was hooked on Metal
130mph+, matt black open piped V8 SD1 on the M50 at night and my Big Brother driving throws this in tape deck...i was 14, best day ever!!
Carve your breakfast on a mirror is one of the best lines in the song
Hardcore at first guy wanting his fix, mellows out showing he got his fix then gets crazy again showing addicts mental state needed more
Moscow '91 INSANE!
My favorite song off master of puppets
Imagine being in Baghdad on Monday and then watching these guys in TX on Friday the same week
Oh yea the mosh is the whole stadium floor!
I've been there, you just gotta ride that wave mama
All Metallica’s music are masterpieces. I listen to instrumental covers of Metallica on classical guitar all the time. The music is amazing!!
Disposable Heroes is probably the best song from this album.
one of my fav bands from the 1980s
Often considered the best heavy metal song and album its a masterpiece and one of the best tunes of the 1980s
Love you youngster's digging an era where they made Thier own music! We had the same expression on our faces when we heard it the first time too! Keep rocking kids!
I just need to say it out: DONT CUT THE SOLO, GODDAM.
Love your hair and reactions!
oh to experience it for the first time again!! I've been listening to MoP since '91
The entire album is about the concept of control. Being controlled, like in this song being controlled by drugs, to fighting for control, like in Welcome Home Sanatarium, from this album.
I was round 9ish when I first heard Enter Sandman..Then just Metal Music..and Metallica was My aFirst EVER CONCERT
The part about breakfast on a mirror says it all.
The album cover does everything. From drugs to war
Fun fact:
I love it!
I've been lucky enough to see Metallica live six different times it's always an amazing show
