According to the Torah, what are women worth? What rights do they have, what position in society...this begins a series of general objections and specific stories related to women and the Bible
Well, at least we girls know that if God doesn't love us, at least Matt does :)
As a Zoroastrian, I must tell you that God does, indeed, love you. They made you equal partners with men in the struggle against evil.

Couldn't agree more. I became disgusted with the bible after reading how horribly women were thought of and treated when I was a teenager - 50 years ago!
Why specify women in your confusion about being devoted to the Abrahamic religions? How they treat women is bad, but there is plenty more in there, and plenty worse as a reason to stop one devoting themselves to the religion.
I'm just saying it's strange when one says I won't support this because it affects me badly, rather than judging it objectively.
Can I just get a picture? You’re misunderstanding. It’s confusing that as a woman, one would follow a religion that specifically degrades them. The rest of the Bible is garbage as well, but we are talking about women in this context. Not all men actually care enough about women to say “Wow, this is messed up, we should not follow this.” They take it and run with it because it doesn’t affect them personally. It is even more mind boggling when something affects somebody personally and still say “Meh. Guess that’s just the way things are.”
Thank you for doing this series Matt. When I was a Christian I could never reconcile with Lot offering up his daughters to be raped. Now I'm an atheist and recently I was in a discussion with a theist who told me the only reason I would be upset by that story was if I had experienced some trauma. I really didn't know what to say. But this video has already given me some ammunition and I look forward to the rest of the series.
Your trauma was knowing that you were once a Christian. One of those "What was I thinking?" moments.
I hadn't spoken with my cousin for 30 years and when I saw him in a park recently I couldn't bring myself to speak with him, knowing that he was a "Christian nut" who made constant references to the bible.

If you see anything with polygamy or rape in the Bible, it never ends well. This is not approving but showing how screwed up people’s actions were and how they eventually came back to haunt them or their children and generations after. Look at King David, he took another man’s wife and murdered her husband. His kingdom went to absolute crap because of what he’d done. The Bible shows mankinds sins not their virtues. Poor treatment of women and others was because of the sin of ego and desire for power amongst others. The laws from God were 10 - people made all the crazy laws and used them to build power over others. By Jesus’ time, you see how angry he was and how the priests abused their power and his own religious people killed him. The religious people didn’t recognize their own God.

He very well could have if he could go into detail about wat ppl could eat. He nvr says "all rights applied to men should be applied to women" he nvr teaches his cultures about consent. He nvr states " it's wicked for a man to have more than one wife". Even jesus nvr talks of men and women being equal? What did gods lack of emphasis on the topic lead to? Centuries of sexist culture. No matter how you slice it, the average person today could express equality better than the bible. Also god commands moses to tell the israelites to capture young girls as sex slaves both endorsing child rape. In leviticus or one of the early books god tells the laws on how a man can sell his daughter into sex slavery n how men can have concubines. I was told that anything that doesn't make sense in the Bible, such as what laws are symbolic, absolute or only valid during Biblic times, and since there aren't any footnotes from God, you must depend on prayer and holy inspiration from God to determine what is what. How bloody convenient.

It's not obsession. Christian theists claim the bible is their god's word. They further claim that their god is omnibenevolent and the the source of morality. But, if you examine the bible, god's actions reveal him to be the antithesis of benevolent and moral.
Any person who could believe in and worship the god of the bible has no claim to the moral high ground. Yet, most Christians have the audacity to claim that atheists can have no foundation for morality without god.
The God of the Bible was into the boy-toy thing. Exodus 9:14. Remember Ganymede and the Eagle?

galileo was ultimately killed by catholic church, any advancements he made are despite his religion, not thanks to it. back then, there is no way of not being a believer. if you don't believe, you won't live for too long.
I can say the same for each of the people you listed. great man. they contributed thanks to their mind and not being bound down by their religion. which, they didn't actually had a real choice in the matter.

My parents brought me up in the comparitively benign Anglican religion. When l got to around 11 years old I realised the significance of how women were portrayed. Knowing that it was a load of bull.......... I gave up the faith and never looked back.

Was never a catholic. Plus it wasn't just the lack of significant female characters or their portrayal. That was just a preliminary fault. A couple of years later when my critical thinking had matured somewhat I realised that there was no evidence for any of it.
When I was younger, I was in a church that was both misogynistic and misandrist. It was a pretty depressing place.

History has also chronicled the atheistic inquisitions and crusades as well.
And, I find it appalling the way atheists force their views into the public sphere, declaring their beliefs on money, and in The Pledge of Allegiance, and conducting head bowed recognitions of their beliefs prior to governmental functions.

I never wanted menstruation and was really pissed off when I learned about it! And over the years, with extreme cramps, nausea and all the related etc... No.
But our bodies make the magic of beautiful, incredible new human beings, male and female. We create that which is magical and precious.
Our wombs and our blood are Holy. Period.
It's not "magical", it's natural. They're not "holy", they're biology. Good use of the "period" pun, though.
Matt is absolutely right about the damage the Bible's anti-woman teachings have done. I was taught that a good wife stays with an abusive husband, because my suffering in silence would bring him to Christ. My husband was to be respected as the head of the home, second only to Christ. I was to be obedient, submissive and to take full responsibility for the care of our home and our children even though I worked full-time. I was taught that, should the abuse be so bad that I left my husband, I wasn't allowed to remarry unless he had committed adultery. If he was repentant I was supposed to forgive him and return to him. I can't tell you what 24 years of abuse does to a woman. You are left feeling worthless and powerless, which often leads to severe depression and anxiety. Religious texts are the foundation for misogyny and the abuse of women all over the world. This has to stop.

And I can't even imagine it. I mean, I sympathize, but there's no way I can know what that's like.
Still, all my life, I've _witnessed_ the benefit of being male. Even as a kid (and I'm 67 now), I was surprised at that. We boys were treated as if we mattered. Girls _didn't_ matter, or not nearly as much as boys. (Mostly, they only mattered as a future wife to some man.) Sometimes, it was subtle and sometimes it was blatant, but it was always there.
I could see it all around me, from relatives, from teachers, from school administrators. When I was a kid, it was just _astonishingly_ blatant. And I suppose it has to be pretty blatant if a kid can recognize it. Certainly, it's better now, though clearly not perfect, huh?
And I'm just talking about more-or-less secular society. I was raised Christian, but it wasn't in a really crazy denomination. And I attended a public school.
Anti-woman teachings in the Bible influenced our whole society, of course (I didn't know a single other person - besides me, I mean - who _wasn't_ a Christian all through high school, at least) but that wasn't even the worst of it (as your comment clearly indicates).

What a joke. Boys are routinely told they are unimportant. They are told that they aren't victims of abuse or that their education was less important than that of girls. This is a major problem in the western world. Male rape victims or domestic abuse victims are almost erased in entirety by government, legal and activist circles. Fathers are painted as worthless.

Matt: Thanks so much for posting this video. It is very important to get this word out there! This line of thinking explains how women are viewed negatively in many societies and how some men feel that they are superior to women. This series should be major part of a curriculum explaining the dangers of religion. Keep up the great work!
My entire extended family is very religious, and it truly seems like most of the women in the family believe that they should be subservient(or at least believe that their husbands are the “head” of their respective households). Blows my mind. How do people follow religions that treat them with the same respect as an inanimate toy?

Fitting I'm viewing this on International Women's Day.
These points and others I've noted in the bible have lead me to wonder - for many years now - how any self-respecting woman can profess to be a Christian. I have voiced that sentiment to a number of people over the years. Chris Rock's comment about black Christians having a really short memory is just as true for women who are Christians.
The only explanation I can give is that they are not truly aware of what the book they claim to believe is the "word of god" actually _says_ on the matter. Because any self-respecting woman I know would not accept that she is worth 1/2 to 2/3 of the value of a man, nor would she accept that she has to submit to a man or that she's equivalent to a domestic animal or that she must remain silent.
You do realize that the only unassailable authority in Christianity- Jesus- never said anything explicitly misogynistic, right?

I always thought it was strange how much story and tradition there is surrounding Jephthah's daughter, women even made days long pilgrimages to honor her and even wept for her... yet she was never even named.

For those curious about the exact reference of the redemption prices, it's in Leviticus 27:3-8.
Matt, what do you tell apologists when they just try to dismiss the redemption price by saying it had nothing to do with the inherent worth of men and women, and that instead they just say it had everything to do with the practicality of production in an agrarian society? Basically they try to explain it all away by saying that back then, males were worth more because they're better workers than females (apparently, even the little 1 month old males are better workers than the 1 month old females lol).

I know it has been a year, but for me, the price just says,"women's work is not valued"....even though back then they worked just as hard in the home as men in the fields and died in childbirth.
Still....it happens today. Once a job becomes "female dominated" it loses wotth. For example GP's....more females....down goes the worth etc etc
Hmm...My daughter works longer and harder than any man I've ever met, while her three brothers do virtually nil. In my experience, women are far better workers as far as productivity and abiding by the rules (according to the economic professors who taught at my college, both male).
More proof? Watch your own family members during Thanksgiving. I've never met a man who can match the production of wearable goods from my own hands. Perhaps it is only in agrarian societies where brute strength is needed. But even then, the women will be working dawn to midnight while the men sit around. I've seen this in America, Europe, and Asia. It's pretty well established everywhere.

Interesting that the word of "God" can be mistranslated, and there are discussion from apologetics to blame mistranslation. Surely such perfect text would be perfectly translated every time as well as perfectly understood when read.

So when my brothers were born my grandparents took out $10,000 life insurance policies. When I was born they took out $3,000 for me because I would have a husband who would provide for me. I was raised to be less, to think I was less and that behaving and being quiet was best. Thankfully I broke all the rules and suffered for it, but now I’m raising my own three little kids to be humanists not Christians.

You never make sure something is true before you believe it. Belief is not a choice. Also, if you're sure something is true, it's not a belief, it's knowledge. You simply believe something or are sure of something because you think evidence justifies belief in it or it's a logical certainty, or you don't believe it because you don't think evidence justifies belief in it and you don't feel certain of it.

Usually whenever people claim the Bible says something positive about women they're using out of context compliments aimed at one specific female character, I've noticed.
See Matt I wish you mentioned his sort of stuff more often in your debates against other opponents. Things that put the opposition in a tight spot where they know that these acts are immoral and obviously wrong ( and sinful from a Christian perspective). And they would be put in that spot of having to choose between what is right from wrong, and defending their apparently perfect bible. And I've seen you do this a few times where you grill them about the one thing occasionally but not enough. And these guys always get away with murder, and not answer the question given by you.
I'm not comparing you to David Silverman, I think you're a far better debater, but he really grills his opponents and just doesn't let go until he makes them look like immoral people, which they are. I notice that his opponents often try to evade the question in fear of exposure by answering a question with a question, but boom! he gets back to the original question. It might be aggressive but it's effective.
Anyway, I relish your debates, as always, and absolutely love watching these videos you upload.

Great video Matt - what I would add is that in many cases women are blamed for the actions or misfortunes of men... Eve made Adam eat the apple, Lot's daughters effectively date raped their father, Delilah was the cause of Samson's demise etc etc...

Hey Matt, love the videos. I have a slightly off topic question. It's regarding arguments for the existence of God. Have we ever universally agreed that something exists based solely upon argumentation? I can't think of anything. We always demand evidence.

Love the video. Is there a way I could mail you a small book I recently got from a 2nd hand store (I remember you talking about perusing 2nd hand stores around you and sometimes coming across something interesting)? The book is specifically named "The Women of the Bible", and is actually a children's book. I laughed when I saw the title of this video bc I had just recently finished reading that book and then seeing a video on the same thing made me laugh a little at the serendipity. Almost as if it were meant to be haha.
The book I have goes through all the women specifically named in the bible in alphabetical order. And each story/parable/whatever (no more than 2 pages each) shows either how they were amazing and godly or a terrible jezibelle deserving of whatever punishment they suffered. It's a very interesting book. Especially when quite a few of the stories are blatant misrepresentations from what is plainly said in the bible, bc I guess explaining to kids exactly what the bible says and means at face value is unacceptable? I think you'd get a kick out of it or might give you a few more talking points on how theists will change or "interpret" things in the bible to comfort themselves or mislead others into believing.
Thanks for all the awesome videos. You've really helped me through my struggle in recent years in becoming a nonbeliever after being a nondenom Christian most of my life and then having my worldview shaterred after a few tragic events (things in Iraq I saw and me being in a crash where I was brought back from death) that made me realize just how sadistic, evil, immoral, and heartless the god of the bible would have to be if he were real. For a while I didn't know what to think or believe bc I had become fully unconvinced of all the things I had been raised to believe about god, the bible, faith, etc. and it freaked me out. It wasn't until I saw your videos, debates, and small lectures that helped me begin to genuinely question and come to terms with what I had been indoctrinated with from childhood. Keep up the good work.

I missed part of this, not sure if you mentioned it but the bible also only speaks to men. The "you" in "you shall not covet" etc. is always addressed to men. The bible almost never addresses women directly.

With regard to the male/female animal sacrifice, it actually makes sense - a commoner is likely to have a very small number of male animals, and uses it to breed/stud the females, so its loss will basically cripple that commoner's ability to maintain a herd. A king is more likely to have sesveral herds or more males, so while still valuable, it's not a crippling loss.

what are your thoughts on men asking fathers to marry their daughters? I have grown up in a religious family and my parents see this as a must. however, its not something I care about at all, especially since my boyfriend would be asking my step-father, who is very distant and hasn't played much of a role in raising me other than providing financially. I just find it kind of offensive because it seems like this act would be acknowledging me as property of my stepdad who I don't even have much of a relationship with.

From what I understand, Leviticus 27 does allow for inflation by saying that a shekel is valued "according to the sanctuary shekel". It's also interesting that the price Judas sold Jesus for was the same price a woman was worth according to Leviticus.

That is something that I do not like about English language teaching. It is not possessive. It is Genitive, which means that it relates something to something else. When we say that so and so is my mother or my teacher, then this meaning is clearly not demonstrating ownership.

Current political events have brought me to the conclusion that religion based on supernatural ideas makes everything in human existence worse. Whatever religion does there is a secular version that we could create that would do that thing better. Religion increases suffering and religion in politics just magnifies its negative effects. The extremely poor treatment of females in my birth family was the deciding factor which made me reject religion, the bible, god, and the whole 9 yards. I instinctively knew my own worth from a very young child and protested any preferment of my sister's and my brother. It helped to have a sister who was not only beautiful but a genius! While the women in my family were all incredibly strong and moral, loving people, it was in comparison to many of the men who were often drunk and violent. They were just patently inferior to a young child's eyes. These same violent men were the ones spouting "male is better" dogma.
Luckily I've learned that both sexes are capable of great honor, kindness and essential worth.
I've always resented the importation of ancient misogynic Jewish/Semitic customs into the Scottish/English culture of my own heritage and Western Civilization itself, thanks to the Evil Book, and get a gut reaction of horror when it is wrongly called "good". Nothing could be further from the truth. Male and female were made to complement one another, care for each other and neither is better. (The writings of Zoroaster and his contemporaries) There are countless verses about gender equality, and this was reflected in ancient Persia- the inspiration for Wonder Woman was a general in the Persian army, commander of the immortals. Men and women had equal pay, the same jobs, and so on.

So this is a headscratcher for me. If it's sinful for a woman to bear a daughter and should instead have a son, what happens when all that's left in the world are men? How is a "bride price" in any way positive? Putting a price on any human being is repugnant.
He was pretty clear in the video that it isn't really a positive, but better than a dowry, so if you have to pick one system, the bride price at least encourages the family to view the daughter as not a burden on the family.

You have probably been made aware that the word "Shekel" literally translate to "weight", right? If not, there are some rabi who dont do their job :) A shekel is a silver coin of a certain weight... and as you probably also is aware, a con that is made from a valuable material is not the subject to inflation in the same way as a coin that just have the value that is printed on it. Anyway, it is totally horrific that some think of a bock that contains that sort of thing is considered by some as the holy writing of their deity.

23:20 -- OK I just want to throw a clarification out there: when it says "unclean", it means "ritually impure", not necessarily "sinful". Something can be ritually impure without being a sin, like for example in Leviticus 14:33-57, there are rules about houses and clothes with a mold problem that describe the object as "unclean". The house or tunic hasn't committed a sin but they're still unclean. The point of labeling something as unclean was often about preventing sickness; living in a house with mold can make you sick, and I'm sure wearing moldy clothes isn't great for you either. With regards to sexuality, a woman being unclean means you can't have sex with her; when she's on her period she's also unclean. With childbirth the goal of not having sex for the first week or two after childbirth was probably about letting her body heal. Does it take a woman's body twice as long to recover from childbirth if the baby is a girl? No, if anything it's probably the other way around because of the testosterone that has to be flushed from her body after having a boy. But that doesn't mean that the woman is sinful for having a baby. Within Judaism the woman must go to the mikvah (ritual bath; there are tons of rules regarding the size, where the water can come from, what percent of the mikvah must be filled with water compared to other possible liquids, etc.) before she's allowed to have sex again. The mikvah removes the status of ritual impurity. Wudu and ghusl in Islam share the same purpose, although since Islam started in an area with significantly less water, unsurprisingly the amount of water required for Islamic ritual purification is much less. Ghusl you can get it done with a liter or two whereas a mikvah can't be smaller than 575 liters.
I'm not saying this as an apologist, I'm saying this because if you're going to have a discussion with a religious person about their religion where you're going to be telling them what they believe, you should be as informed as possible.

At the time, Native American tribes were recognized as foreign powers. Native Americans inside the USA's borders were foreign citizens, just like someone from France or Spain. Of course they shouldn't be counted in a census of United States citizens. It is only through a long process that we reached where we are, with Native Americans now considered citizens of the United States, which is why there are additional considerations when dealing with tribal lands due to treaty agreements made when they were still foreign powers.
Meanwhile, slaves counting as 3/5s of a person reduced the voting power in the House of Representatives of those states that had the most slaves. If slaves had counted as full persons, the southern states would have had even more power in Congress than they did.
So that is where our idea of "cooties" came from in the 1st grade.
