Omg since it sounds like a 12 string already imagine how massive it would sound on an actual 12 string! Maybe with a lead belly style too with the pick ring and whatever else he did
I remember when nothing else Matters came out. I was going nuts trying to figure out the beginning. I couldn't get it for the life of me. When I finally made it to Sam Ash music , to look at the tabs, I was embarrassed to see it was 6 open strings.
When I was deployed to Bosnia they came and played for us in a very small gymnasium at camp eagle. In front of a crowd of about 200 in December of 1999. It was really cool to hear them and meet them. It kind of felt like a small piece of home. Their plane almost crashed when they left because our airfield was extremely icey. So glad they didn't. But in a time when they were selling out much bigger shows. They took the time to see us and I always appreciated that.
I did security at Chameleon West recording studios here in WNY for Robbie of the GooGoo Dolls for the first three Music Is Art festivals. I'm not exactly a massive fan of the music, but those dudes are straight up awesome people, and they appreciate their fans very, very much. I've done security for quite a few artists who've come to my hometown to play the big hockey arena or football stadium, and even a few of the cool smaller venues here, but very, very, VERY few of them have ever been as cool to and respectful of the people around them who makes stuff work behind the scenes. Top shelf guys all around.
I learned this song for the hell of it since my wife always listens to 90s alternative. I ended up writing a song of my own, then went higher with the tuning on electric, it ended up being G/A#. I play more noise/post punk/post-hardcore. It’s one of my favorite tunings. I have one guitar for that tuning and now I have 2 songs I wrote with that guitar.
It's a simple fix to not get your B string to break all you have to do is replace it with a high E string problem solved and you can tune a lot of other Goo Goo Dolls songs by replacing the B string with a high e
Learning how to play this song when I was kid changed my perspective on music entirely. It opened up my eyes to what can be done on a guitar. I basically never play standard tuning anymore. I love this song.
Never realized it was so complex. Pretty impressive actually. Not a huge fan of them but that is pretty cool. They are kind of catchy, I'll give them that.
He only had 5 strings total when he pitched the idea. Wasn't fond of the pitch, but the label loved the sound and wanted the identical style during the recording. Turned out to be one of the biggest songs ever.
Their other song Name has a similarly weird tuning. I decided to learn it a year ago thinking it would be easy, but it took me a while to figure out. In fact I had to check a video of them performing it just to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
Be careful: the avid fan who attempts to tune his only acoustic guitar to this tuning may experience such side affects as annoyance, frustration, and tears while completing this this process
Seasons by Chris Cornell: FFCCCF (It’s open F5 tuning). From standard tuning you tune Low E up to F, A down to F, D down to C, G down to C, B up to C, and E up to F (you could try to tune G up to C, but safety goggles are recommended).
Anyone else get a new guitar and play the strings that came with it until they break so you can appreciate the tones a lot more with brand new ones? It’s like getting 2 new guitars.
Did the singer actually “create” this tuning like he says? Or has any other guitarist used this tuning before them? I guess it does seem like the only purpose is to play that one song though lol
Joni Mitchell has over 50 different tunings. Just tune strings to random pitches and move fingers around until you find pleasing chord sounds. Not exactly rocket science.
this tuning took my beloved high e string from this world
You mean b string
Why? Did you time your E up an octave to D instead of down a full step?
I've had strings break from detuning, but maybe I'm j doin sumn wrong
@@bwoah3753 if you detune really fast and release the tension quickly there's a chance for the string to break
@@bwoah3753 Strings were probably just a little old or your tuner posts could have abrasions that can snap the strings.
Thats why that song almost has a 12 string vibe. Never knew this.
Yeah I always thought it was a 12 string
Rzesznik did the same thing with Name.
Same

They use a mandolina too
I've Lost 3 three of my eyes on this tuning.
Two blue and a brown eye?
@@tvrbob8681I got that! 😂
I get losing two eyes, but how did your one-eyed Willie also lose his eye during this? 😱
Check out some CSN tunings ie guineveire , 4+20 etc
Even crazier
Does that mean you're third eye blind now?
I've broken so many strings tuning my guitar to this. It was always unnerving when you had to go back after tuning to tweak them.
Here's a protip: don't use a high e string, use another b string
If you're going to restring a guitar just for this song, might as well just make it a full custom set.
LoL Trolling, right? Tune the high E down to a D, replace the B for another high E string tuned down to D

That B string rings out, so much more than the others. It sounds like it’s screaming, in pain.

*I broke my Banjo string once. There was a lot of blood everywhere but once it healed it was peachy cream.💯*
Gotta give cred to Tim Pierce who was the session guitarist on the studio recording
Was just going to say that. He played the demo of the song on his channel. It was him that sugested this tuning. 🙂
Dude is a genius. Song would be nothing without his input
Tim also wrote and played the solo.
So glad I learned about Tim Pierce from Rick Beato. His discography is nothing short of amazing. ❤
And the mandolin
still waiting to see this in standard
I’ve found out a standard sound I did for iris

I always thought they used a mandolin along with guitars in this song.
And created one of the most beautiful rhythms I've personally ever heard.
I didn’t understand all the words you said but this is super awesome and informative!

The guitarist behind this legendary piece is Tim Pierce!
Goddammit. Now I have to listen to this song again and relive those teenage growing pains. Thanks, I hate it.
Thanks for this.I love that song, everytime I pick up my guitar to try to play it,it slips from my mind and I totally forget all about it.

More hypnotic & less chance of string breakage...tune the Dstring to 144.2hz ~ A432hz
Then tune the guitar from D string
