    Sweetwater can't be wrong:
The Death Metal is mean, evil, and will rip your guitar sound to shreds. I used this pedal for the majority of my band's guitar tracks on our last recording and it was perfect. This is an essential pedal for metal, industrial, thrash, and gothic. We even use this on our bass rig.
There's a lot of gain there when using it in DI mode and I'd be tempted to pick one up to experiment with it through my Bandit's poweramp.
    Great vid as usual.

This is hands down the best channer about pedals on youtube, and the reason why is simple. All pedals are tested to the higest standard possible, that is compared to the best pedal of all. (Oh, the dude is super cool too..)
    Keep it up man.

3:04 Holy cow! I've always found my Death Metal to be too bright and fizzy, but I never thought or trying the Mixer out. I'm definitely gonna try this next time!

The key is to bring back the level for some compression. Always under noon. The mid is at 1.1 kHz... so you can get a hint of chainsaw. The high is too high. Dial it back.

I've got both a DOD fx86 and a digitech death metal, I won't change for anything, yes, it's designed for extreme high gain, which I love, if you set it right with the tone on the amp, you get a killer sound that will always cut through, especially playing death metal. Been playing Death Metal for over 20 years now, I won't use anything else.

Nice suprise, so you got one of these. I have two, and I like it for what it is. Like the MT-2, it was designed mainly for use in the clean channel of SS practice amps for beginner/home player metal guitarists who do not have high gain tube amps, and it does the job its designed for well enough.
Good result you got with it in the Dist channel considering the pedal's gain is set to max, I presume you set the amp's gain level low.

The digitech death metal was my pedal so i have a lot of nostalgia towards it, been thinking of getting another, thanks for the great video

I have one, but never really bother with it as it doesn't produce a sound I like.
The DigiTech Distortion Factory has a Death Metal mode on it that is actually more usable i.m.o., though still not particularly great.

The Distortion Factory is digital, much like the DigiTech Metal Master. In my opinion they both sound much better than the all-analog Death Metal!

Update - If its of interest, check out this video comparing the Digitech Death Metal to the Boss HM-2, which also shows how to dial in Swedish chainsaw tones on the Digitech as best possible:

Also, get the DOD Death Metal too if you get the chance, more or less the same sound, but more collectible. 🤘

I have this pedal at least since almost 10 years and never i can get a real tone that i can say finally sounds good. It always sounds to moody and dirt, even if use it as preamp in the fx loop.

For those who don't like the pure sound of the Death Metal: I use it for recording with its mixing out, I put my prefered distortion pedal in front and use just the mixer out of the pedal.

You're too diplomatic. But the DOD version was my favourite pedal growing up. To 14-year-old ears it sounded like I nailed the Deftones' wall of guitar noise.

Hey domenic, I know this sounds stupid but what if you try this before/after hm2?

Hey man thanks for the vid. To connect this to your computer are you going from pedal mixer output into preamp into interface?

I haven't watched the video yet but my experience with this pedal (and its earlier DOD iteration) have been extremely disappointing.
Every couple of years I think "it can't have been that bad", or "maybe that nasty death sound is exactly what I need for this new project" so I buy another, and every goddamn time I am let down by its terrible pick response, buzzing noise floor, and lack of ay kind of useful dynamics. Strangely I have found that the Digitech Grunge (based on the same distortion circuit) is actually great for metal, especially when using its built-in speaker sim.

And after watching the video....I commend your heroic efforts to make this pedal sound good, but it's still a shitty pedal with no redeeming qualities.

I agree about the Grunge - it is great for metal. I've never understood why it is considered a bad pedal by many.
