What you need is a reamer. It means you can ream the bearing holes out slightly. I had to do this when I re-wheeled my Lima horse box and it wouldn't run. Yours will need a slight reaming and it will run like a dream. Older horse, boxes such as this, would also have been used to transport "prize cattle" wagons. These occurred regularly from Somerset to Scotland in the 1950s and 60s.
I can agree that the seams around the doors could be moulded a bit deeper, but I think this is a common trait across the board as there's no reason to add the extra expense to produce proper doors unless they open. And if they did, that'd mean you'd have to pay more for it. ;) The sticking axle is fixed by very carefully filing out the journals a bit, use a small drill and turn it with your hands to do this. Additionally you can try to pry the plastic journal boxes apart slightly. Been there, done that.
I got some of these from a Graham Farish train set, and the set is based on taking thoroughbred race horses to different horse race tracks. So I guess it's "acceptable" to have a rake of them if you fancied it, since you enjoyed it so much! Great video anyway x
Easy to imagine the horse's trainer sitting on the bench with an inside access door to open and calm / feed the horse. The detail is impressive. I'm thinking a very light "Panel Line Wash" in brown with just a touch of dark brown chalk powder brushed on the undercarriage would highlight the details even more. Great train car. Thank you for sharing...
Great review again Sam, I bought one of those from Hattons a few months ago I wasn't in the market specifically for a horse box but I'm a sucker if I think that I'm getting a bargain and it's always nice to have some different rolling stock. I'm no expert in the way British Railways ran their horse box stock but as a layman I would think that the horse would enter the wagon through the centre drop down door between the grooms seating area door at one end and the tack storage section door at the other end. Also it occurred to me that the horse box would have been better situated well away from the engine to prevent the chance of sparks and embers entering through the horse box vents and setting the straw alight, also the noise from the engine could unsettle the horse, if I was the fat controller I might put the horse box at the rear of the consist. Good work Sam keep the videos coming.
Me too Barry - can't help myself where bargains are concerned! Yes that makes some sense - I bet you're probably right! Thanks for all the info! Cheers, Sam :)
What do you mean "not an interesting video"? That was one of your best ever Sam! Love my horse box - got it at Hattons a while ago too (even cheaper without VAT since I'm outside Europe). Cheers mate
Horse boxes have a very special place in my heart as my first train set was a br class 3MT with a rake of 3 horse boxes and if I ever get round to making a proper layout I will have a field with horses
Thanks for doing a showcase on this! I decided to buy one myself! I don’t have much European rolling stock but this will make an excellent addition to the rolling stock I do have!
Fantastic review Sam! Super Horse Box! For your next rolling stock review I think you should go modern with the HIA from Dapol. With half Diecast construct the model is super, it has plenty of weight to stay on the line and the wheels are very free rolling. The weight and wheels are perfect so they are sufficiently light for almost any loco to pull, yet they are heavy enough to reliably stay on track, as for the wheels they are free enough to roll with a small push or a slight gradient. The detail is all there - I can't fault it! What's more they run with Freightliner 66s in real life so Poppy could haul the train. These fantastic models have an option of white or green wagons and have an RRP of £26.49. Please could you start doing more modern diesels and electrics as they're always fantastic. Maybe A Dapol class 68 or 73, a Bachmann Class 70, 158, 150, 170, 450 or 350. Hornby class 60, 56, 156, 390 or 153. Of course those are just some that would be good to see. Also, please could you get an N gauge starter set and do some n gauge reviews? Those would be popular! Maybe you could start with the Gaugemaster Collection Ballast and loco set (sorry I can't remember the set name). Anyway, thanks Sam, Iwan
A model train store in my area is selling one for $25, or 20 pounds, which I think is a bit too much for a 2-axle piece of rolling stock! Nearly everything hornby that store had seemed to be way more than to buy one from Hatton's and ship it to America. 9:25 I notice some old box van bodies! That was quite a great skit you came up with!
Yeah that is quite a lot mate - how much do Hatton's charge for US shipping? Probably would be better value, if you buy more than one thing! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I should also add that with the exchange rate of the £ dropping in value that prices will go up for the same item. When the Hornby LMS coaches first came out nearly 10 years ago you could buy them for under £20 while now you would be lucky to get them for under £50
The look on the pony’s face says it all, get in indeed 😂. Dcc concepts make a good set of reamers for pin point axel boxes, I’ve got some and they can really make a difference to sticking wheels. That said it’s a bit surprising for a new model.
Hi Sam I just bought myself the hornby b.o.b class sir archibald Sinclair runs perfectly it was brand new lovely livery on it now its my favourite locomotive in my collection hope your ok
British Railways built some in the mid-1950s. Most of the horseboxes ended up at Didcot where they were broken up around 1960. The traffic must have stopped suddenly as before that horseboxes were a common sight.
Great review Sam! I don’t know if I’ve seen one, but I think I’ve seen a BR Version on the Bluebell Railway when I was on my holiday in the UK, it might not have been one, but it looked like one. Also, from all of us Americans, Happy Labor Day!!
The scene with the horses is actually quite funny. But overall it’s a brilliant review you have done on something that’s totally different as a piece of rolling stock. Anyway, I think the train that the Patriot is hauling, with the horse box, could be a passenger train that could be going to the races or something.
Thanks for this .. I have rather a soft spot for horse boxes as I am sure they would have been quite common in the day.. .. I have a couple of the earlier version (numbers) of these so being able to get a couple from Hattons (they have 2 different models at this price). Your site is a treat - and now have a bargain as well.
Off to the races, eh? These things are really neat wagons and I definitely agree about their added diversity to a passenger consist - Same goes for postal equipment. Shame that Hornby's was a bit too small for the Shetland to get in, Margate better get on that.
Hi Sam. Another fab video! At 6:30 when you show the under frame in detail it does look as though the two vertical "things" under the side door are a bit wonky! Is there something that isn't clipped in properly? Perhaps that's why one set of wheels aren't freely spinning?
Not all horses are full of trust like the one, plus a pony, which Sam had just met. Sam once decided to attempt petting a horse up, close and personal. For a first, not a good idea; big mistake. The horse in question, a mischievous black stallion, gave a cheeky horse grin. Sam got a bit too close from behind, and.... "AAH!" he screamed. He wound up on the receiving end of a hind-legs kick in the stomach. The owner appeared in time to see Sam go sailing through the air and land in a muddy puddle. The middle-aged man felt sorry for the intruder. "Mischief is always up to no good," explained the gent named Tom. "Here let me pull you up." Sam winced in true pain. He'd twisted his left ankle badly. How was he to get home? Tom helped his acquaintance get cleaned. Sam's T-shirt was well and truly soaked. "Aatchoo!" he sneezed, catching a bad cold. Thankfully, there came the sound of a shrill whistle behind a wire fence. Sam had a train ride as far as the entrance of a certain favourite model railway shop of his. He was rather unhappy. "I think I'll stick to my model railway from now on," he spluttered. Uncannily, Sam woke up from a weird dream. He wondered what else could go wrong. Nothing did.
I have the hornby GWR horse box. I also purchased mine slightly lower value than normal price. Detail wise there is a lot detail on the wagon. Including detailed wheels and underframe. Don't think hornby sell the GWR one anymore so a bit of hunting is needed to find a new un boxed one.
@@SamsTrains very different as the Great western railway designed theirs to a design of their own. Idea is the same a 4 wheeled box wagon. But detail on the Great western horse box is a lot more detailed. One detail I noticed was their are detailed wheels not just steel ones like on the LMS one you have.
Great review & interesting model, I suspect they we’re kept busy during the hunting seasons & horse shows before the age of motor-ways and horse floats (trailers)
Oh Sam! You should have bought several of those. Place the Olympic Rings on some and pretend to be hosting the English Olympic Equestrian Team. You could place the Royal Crest on it and have the Horse Guard on board. The imagination could just run wild. Like the horses in Oklahoma.
Great video - could you do a video on best value locos (Not necessarily cheapest), looking at RRP, retailers and 2nd hand? I know prices vary but there is a general trend - for example I've been eyeing some LMS Pacific's on eBay and they've all gone around £40. Speaking of which I got the r2339 Mallard (latest one in LNER as it ran, rather than your one which is as preserved) for £57 which I'm quite happy with
This is a Really Nice looking Box Car for horses, And the music in the beginning really suits it. From your friend MrTop5 ... if your fine with me saying that
@@SamsTrains There is a national register for all grounded van bodies but I have come across one or two that were not registered, they are now. great hobby looking for them.
Cracking vid chap, cant beat a bargain...need to try and bag yourself some Motorail wagons and cars.....I still firmly believe there is a market in real life to bring them back. I’d deffo use it to cart my car up to Scotland on a wagon for a drive about lol....and as for the question ‘horse box, does that make for an interesting video’.....yes it does mate. The more videos and reviews the better...you never know, someone may be on the fence about getting this til they see you with a pony in your hand from the never ending story and thinks yes!....sold lol....
Thanks a lot mate - and thanks for the tip, I'll look into that! Glad you found it interesting too - appreciate it mate! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
haha, the horse box is great! There's so much good stuff for that money - particularly from Oxford Rail this year! Check out some of my review, and see what you fancy?? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Pretty cool video I like it I was trying to watch the video about the swimming pool and the model train and I can't watch it I was wondering why I was thinking maybe you're going to delete it or something just curious
Thanks a lot mate - unfortunately I've decided to age-restrict that video, just to stop youngsters from wanting to try it themselves! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think the horse box would be at the back. It would be awkward to bring a horse into a platform full of passengers, you’d probably be uncoupling the horse box at its destination before it would be leaving the coaches and the noise of the loco would probably spook it. Not a professional or overly complaining, just shedding some light
Umm Sam, did the wheels fail to free wheel before or after you slammed it down in a horse paddock, lol. By the way Hattons sold three of these to me all different running numbers for 7.50 pounds each! I didn't have to pay the VAT...... but the postage !?! ,,,,,well it was worth it, they are very well made and worth every penny.
Noooo - that was all filmed after the review - I did allow for things to go wrong ;) That's just fantastic - what a price!! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hello sam I am thinking of getting a few for myself but I am getting a oxford rail deen goods and railgun pack and I give the horse van a 8.76/10 because there is so much detail on this peace of rolling stock and you should get a Bachmann spiteful brake van off totally Thomas from david
Thanks David, and hope you enjoy the train pack! I agree - it's very detailed indeed! A spiteful brake van would be great too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I liked very much and I think I have one too. And I have an perfect idea! Can you make a video with Greek trains? Because I am from Greece and I love trains
9:11 oh my goodness!!! Are they yours? I think they trample them( how would you explain that to the model company!!!) I thought you said the doors couldn't open!!!!😄😄😄
Sam'sTrains that's great, I often make a paper train with the corridor vans in the evening and if I get up early in the morning I run it like they do in real life. Also around Christmas time I run lots more parcel trains to represent the Christmas parcels😂
What do you, singer Neil Young, singer Rod Stewart, and former F1 racer Riccardo Patrese, have in common? Hint: they collect even the most obscure and abstract of items, such as this little trinket. Well, in Neil Young’s case, _used to._
9:25 yes tis a bit big that one hmm shertland pony? i know up by mildenhall in the field near the air base there are two small horses in thre but there a bit big too, also in the back ground two old wagons
Don't worry Sam - @ 3:07 - Not a swear word - "Sodding" or should I say "sod" is a gardening term for a clump of earth - so what you actually said is "I can't get it out of this "clump of earth" box"!!! lol
Also @ 9:26 - did you pick that field just b/c in the back ground behind you there are 2 old Railway Wagons (2 old Ventilated Goods Vans) slowly rusting away???
Also Also @ 9:43 the looks that smaller horse was giving you - it was like "are you serious??? You want me to get in to that thing??? I know that I'm small but that is ridiculous!!!"
Awesome rolling stock you got there Sam! Its defiantly worth the 9 pounds you paid for and also of what you get for your money. I love how this wagon is super detailed. It would've been cool if the door could open so you can put mini horses or donkeys inside the wagon or buy more of these wagons to make a animal train. :)
Thanks very much mate - glad you thought this was worth it! It would have been very cool if the doors opened, you're right! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, Very good review. AM with you love the horse box got one but not at that price nice one , would be nice if you have a birthday?, All the Best Brian 🤗
Hi Sam, Nice horse box but it has a flaw - no opening doors the reason I say this is that Hornby Dublo had the same horse box design in red and green they came complete with horse and ramp with large doors that opened . To me this horse box is a step back given that Dublo one had these features this does not.
I agree Peter - opening doors would have made this much better! For £9 that might have been pushing it, but for the RRP of over £20, that wouldn't be unreasonable! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I would buy one of these but I heard a dreaded phrase... Metal wheels. My super 4 layout hates modern metal wheels. The flanges foul the points and the wheels are so thin they don’t sit on the rails properly
I don't think horseboxes were that unusual in steam days. Also they would have traveled from one area to another. Your Claude Hamilton for example in real life could have worked near Newmarket which was equipped for horse traffic as it was close to the races.
Nope, still £9 - some are £9 and some are £20 - no idea why!! Check the link in the description, and un-check the pre-owned button! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brad Pitt:WHAT'S IN THE BOX
Sam:it's a horse box what do you think
It’s a goat. Are you freaking kidding me, *_of course_* it’s a horse.
haha!! ;D

I bet you could fit both the horse and miniature horse in those two Railway vans in the background ;)
P.s Nice video as always :)
haha yes indeed - they love going inside those ;)

Theres one of these at ferryhill in aberdeen, it would be good to get it going again
Oh very nice! I wonder how many are still around?!

Jason Smith 4472 the horse box
haha, the horse box is great! There's so much good stuff for that money - particularly from Oxford Rail this year! Check out some of my review, and see what you fancy?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I don't think people would do this at home I don't think it's extreme enough
But thanks for letting me know
Just bought one of these for about half price. They look great!
Awesome! For the money, they are excellent! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video Sam it is a great piece I have just got hold of an old hornby duchess of Sutherland and 4 LMS coaches for only £60
Thanks a lot David - and wow that's amazing - is that a tender driven one?! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains yes it is a tender driven one
I think the horse box would be at the back.
It would be awkward to bring a horse into a platform full of passengers, you’d probably be uncoupling the horse box at its destination before it would be leaving the coaches and the noise of the loco would probably spook it.
Not a professional or overly complaining, just shedding some light
Yeah that makes sense actually - I'll do it that way next time!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Amazing horse box, Sam!
Thanks Duck! :D
Very nice Sam, and what a bargain! Have you ever reviewed a GWR auto-coach? Think they look great with a nice little Pannier Tank loco. Thanks again.
Thanks Mike! Yes I have - check out my review of the Hornby 14xx Autotrain - I reviewed them in that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Excellent, many thanks Sam.
Noooo - that was all filmed after the review - I did allow for things to go wrong ;)
That's just fantastic - what a price!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hello sam I am thinking of getting a few for myself but I am getting a oxford rail deen goods and railgun pack and I give the horse van a 8.76/10 because there is so much detail on this peace of rolling stock and you should get a Bachmann spiteful brake van off totally Thomas from david
Thanks David, and hope you enjoy the train pack! I agree - it's very detailed indeed! A spiteful brake van would be great too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I loved the comedic bits in this, I take it you have a friend who lives on a farm?
haha thanks Patrick - you could say that! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I liked very much and I think I have one too. And I have an perfect idea! Can you make a video with Greek trains? Because I am from Greece and I love trains
Thanks mate - and very cool! I love the idea of Greek trains - any suggestions? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains are you have viber?
Cool. I recently bought a Dapol telescopic wagon for around £25 and a nuclear flask wagon for £32
Wow that's pretty good - nice deals there mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
9:11 oh my goodness!!! Are they yours? I think they trample them( how would you explain that to the model company!!!) I thought you said the doors couldn't open!!!!😄😄😄
haha yes they are! I think the lack of opening doors was the least of the problems ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam just a quick question. Do you have any parcel vans so you could run van trains to deliver parcels?
I do have one or two yeah - I'll have to get them running again! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains that's great, I often make a paper train with the corridor vans in the evening and if I get up early in the morning I run it like they do in real life. Also around Christmas time I run lots more parcel trains to represent the Christmas parcels😂
Great! I think I'll pick one up
Awesome! Hope you enjoy! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What do you, singer Neil Young, singer Rod Stewart, and former F1 racer Riccardo Patrese, have in common?
Hint: they collect even the most obscure and abstract of items, such as this little trinket. Well, in Neil Young’s case, _used to._
Yes I'd heard that too - it's very cool!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oxford cattle wagon has a massive amount of detial!
Ooh really? I will have to get one!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I saw these about 3 years ago in Ireland for 10 euros... Not sure what the conversion ratings are or were but it doesn't seem too off.
Yeah that's not too bad - and they were much newer models back then too! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi sam bought one recently for less than 15 euro including post, my locol model shop in dublin sells them for 25 euro, result 👍
That sounds pretty good Ciaran, hope you were happy with it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
9:25 yes tis a bit big that one hmm shertland pony? i know up by mildenhall in the field near the air base there are two small horses in thre but there a bit big too, also in the back ground two old wagons
haha yeah! Ahh well, you could get an O gauge one, and try??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I've never knew that the LMS had to deal with farm animals can you review any new LNER rolling stock someday
haha I know - it's pretty unusual! Yes I can definitely look at some LNER stock! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
not the average farm horse, but race horses.
Cool little van
Thank you! :D
Get some hay wagons and it'll be perfect!
Also, I was wondering, can you drift the boche buster?
haha that would be perfect! And that's an awesome idea - I'll have to try that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome unboxing and review
Thanks a lot mate!! :D
Grate video! I might buy it! Thanks for sharing! 😁
Thanks Marty - hope you like it if you do! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains no problem!
Ahh yes, you're right, lol! Yeah - I made sure those were in shot, lol! Good old Milo - he's a good actor ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sod is the act of bum sex.
I did enjoy that, are they your horses? I don't think they were quit small enough 😂 time to buy a 00 horse 😂 well done Sam great video👍
Thanks George - they're ours yeah, but I don't personally ride them! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I’m building a farm on my model railway I might get that thanks
Ooh this'd be perfect for that - good one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do you have that K1 freight pack from Hornby? Because that looks a lovely train pack
I don't sadly, but I agree it looks awesome! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
During your next review during the running section can you run a gwr king class?
That's a great idea Jay - I'll have to do that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good video I did not know you had a out side pair of shoes 🤣🤣🤣 good video sam
haha I do indeed - they're not slippers!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, Very good review. AM with you love the horse box got one but not at that price nice one , would be nice if you have a birthday?, All the Best Brian 🤗
Thanks a lot Brian - you'll have to ask the wife for another birthday!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's based on a British railway standard 4-wheeled coach
Ooh really?! :O
Ahh Do you have the Same problem with the wheel not moving on your van? on my BoxVan i have the Same problem.. :/
Nice review!
Sam :D
Yeah I do! A few people have suggested fixes though - I'm going to investigate, and I'll let you know!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Thanks :D i would like to know the Answer for that "Miner Fault" :D
Ooh! You been inside this, how much details are inside!!!!😁😁😁
haha! I seem to remember it was quite cool inside! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
In the next couple of months I will be getting model trains could I sent them to you to be serviced plz jack :D
Hi mate, I'm not currently offering any servicing, but I can definitely give you advice! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains k thanks
If it's roughly around $12, I may pick one up
I can definitely recommend it - you'll probably enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You need a genie horse - puff off purple smoke and in it goes.
Nice Box Car!
Nice To Finally See A Rolling stock Review.
Looks Amazing! I Think The Box Car,
Will Maybe go up In Price! :D
Thanks a lot Ross! Ooh I hope they don't put the prices up!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam what a bargain who’s were those horses lol
Thanks a lot James - they're our horses!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains cool
Hi Sam,
Nice horse box but it has a flaw - no opening doors the reason I say this is that Hornby Dublo had the same horse box design in red and green they came complete with horse and ramp with large doors that opened . To me this horse box is a step back given that Dublo one had these features this does not.
I think the reason for that would be the way that was done was no very realistic and also it costs more to produce that.
I agree Peter - opening doors would have made this much better! For £9 that might have been pushing it, but for the RRP of over £20, that wouldn't be unreasonable!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I absolutely love this video
haha thank you!! :D
This video is just Horsing around!
And that horse doesnt want get into the box because its a Pony not a horse.
haha, it is indeed, lol! Ahh I see what I did wrong - apologies! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You know I never seen a horsebox car in the island of sodor(on thomas'branch line or edward's branch line or the little western line).?
I would buy one of these but I heard a dreaded phrase...
Metal wheels.
My super 4 layout hates modern metal wheels. The flanges foul the points and the wheels are so thin they don’t sit on the rails properly
Really?! I'm surprised to hear that - sorry about that mate!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
that was quick for a new video
Thank you! :D
I don't think horseboxes were that unusual in steam days. Also they would have traveled from one area to another. Your Claude Hamilton for example in real life could have worked near Newmarket which was equipped for horse traffic as it was close to the races.
Thanks a lot for the extra info! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
9:30 Funny how there are Abandoned BR Vent Vans in the Background on a Video about Horse Vans
haha I know right - I went and explored them afterwards!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They are £11 now from hattons
Nope, still £9 - some are £9 and some are £20 - no idea why!! Check the link in the description, and un-check the pre-owned button!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I feel like this is evidence Sam could have a model Railway tv show
haha, you're very kind!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yay, 50k subs sam
Thank you!!! :D
Sam, what is the difference between the h0 and 00 track?
The gauge is the same exactly, it's just the sleeper size and spacing that's different!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks.
I have that 2 it’s second hand but I have it !!
I also have an older version of the red jinty
Very cool! And I love those Jinties! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That is amazing review sam
Thanks Justin!! :D
In the horse seane there are 2 ex van wagons in the background.
haha well spotted - I was always interested in those! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice one Sam!
Thanks Marco! :D
Great vid! You need some oo horses, and I need some o scale highland cows for my Hogwarts Express. Hard to find!
I certainly do - I'll have to look for some too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cool vid Sam
Thanks Elliot! :D
