Jesus Sam! Thanks for making me feel ancient at all of my 36 years! I can remember when these first came out and it feels like yesterday. Although they (and the royal Scot) got a bit of a lukewarm reception if I remember in contrast to the slightly earlier black 5 which was very well received. BTW no oo gauge loco is worth £200 when you consider the fantastic o gauge Dapol terrier, class 08 and 57xx pannier all available today new for £195!

For over £200, why is any electrical tape in any shape or form acceptable!!! I’m an engineer, and only use this as a cheap fix? I wouldn’t pay more than £90. A bit biast as always found Hornby inferior and overpriced.

Good looking loco there Sam ,, 1 thing we have to remember that if they dont make good profit well there will be no more hornby so let the peeps that can afford it have there fun with it till it breaks down and we get it for a quarter or sometimes a tenth of the price , fix it for a small amount and get another 10 to 20 years of running and enjoyment from it.
I still see that paying top dollar is not a good thing but it is what it it.
I seen you on the telly on the weekend too.
Keep up the good work and gr8 video there sam.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

I've lost all faith in Hornby. From this point, I refuse to buy any modern locos from them. The prices are far to high, if a teen like me who just wants to sit down and 'play trains', well, I can't with new locos, as on £5 a week pocket money, it would take me 41 weeks to buy this model at RRP, this is why I buy second-hand. If I only bought new stuff, I'd be limited to one or two locos a year, but since I decided to go second-hand, I managed to buy 11 in 2020, an astonishing 17 in 2021 and 4 this year so far. So yeah, second-hand is definitely the way forward for me.

I agree prices are getting unbearable but it's not all Hornby's fault. Literally everything is increasing in prices - Bachmann, but other hobbies and non-railway items like bikes are going up. Not to mention food, petrol, energy. Inflation, the pandemic, logistics (and to an extent for some prices especially surrounding energy and food - Russia's illegal aggressive and bloody war against Ukraine - though the war will have little to no impact on Model railways) have contributed to the rise in costs and costs of living. For newer models I can sort of see why prices are going up with research, designing, production, logistics and development etc. But Granted though Hornby does indeed bear some responsibility, especially charging unreasonable prices for older tooling.
It's not quite an easy situation and there isn't really an easy solution to the problem, our daily lives are getting more expensive sadly and wages haven't caught up with it.

As an ex Rhyl (pronounced GRILLE without the G, but you're forgiven) boy and as a nipper around 1961 having been hauled from Rhyl to Brum by this very loco, I had to have one. Bought about 4 years ago for about £120, not run yet as don't really have a layout, but it's on display in my trains/cars/planes travelled/driven/flown display cabinet. You were unlucky Sam, none of those quality issues with mine, apart from a missing whistle, which might be down to me. Really pleased with it as I think it looks great, would have liked it in BR livery to replicate my journey though. Hornby RRPs - madness. Great review as always, thanks.

If only the RRP wasn't that much, then this model surely would have been higher up on the leaderboard. It is dearly a shame that Hornby's prices are hiking, I wish we could do something one day. However this model is actually much better than I thought it would be for the age, thank you Sam for reviewing this and keep it up!

I have the lovely un-rebuilt Pariot from around 2009 "Illustrious" in crimson lake. Apart from the old fashioned peg connector between locomotive and tender, she still passes muster with today's models. Perhaps lacking the finest detailing, but she runs beautifully and looks spiffing.
I would rather have her for what she cost me second hand than this sister loco at £200, you have reviewed, though she does look very nice.

A beautiful class in a nice livery!I really want one now but for how many locos I already have that are good, and the quality you get for your money, I can’t justify that price.
Hornby seems to think money up, quality down is the right way which is sad because if they put attention to quality and lower the price a bit that would be one absolute class buy.
    Stay safe 😀

Sam, I was looking at the Hattons best sellers and found what could be the biggest bargain I've ever seen, I think you should check it out. They are selling a Hornby Class 87 with a sprung pantograph and buffers as well as two different light settings for only £99. Pretty sure that is over 50% off, the RRP is probably over £200 knowing Hornby

The LNER B12 is the odd one out, as she doesn't have outside cylinders or steam-pipes. Easy, the theme is 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, and the B12 is the only 4-6-0 who has inside cylinders. By the way, thankyou for sneezing my channel name, it sounded very convincing. You're cute when you fake a sneeze. You got the Gunpowder part of my request slightly wrong, I specified I wanted the GWR one in the consist, but you got everything else correct and put in the LNWR version, so I'll let you off the hook. You should create an Easter Eggs-press train this Easter Saturday. I'd love to see it.🍫

Some Patriots were named after important people of the consituent companies of the LMS, (Sir Frank Ree); army regiments, ships, countries (Bahamas, Ceylon), holiday resorts, for example 'Morecambe and Heysham' and in this case, Rhyl (Denbighshire, Wales).

My 2007 version of one of these recently "died", owned new since 2013 and stored sensibly in a bedroom environment. Anyway, it all started with the motor not engaging properly, especially when going forwards.
I reluctant decided to investigate but the chassis was very hard to remove from the body, this not being helped by the fragile nature of the body. The problem seemed to be the plate on which the DCC chip can be mounted. However, eventually I succeeded.
No matter what I tried, when I put the chassis back in the body the problem with the motor reoccurred. Then things really started to go wrong.
In trying to unscrew the DCC mounting plate to have a look at the worm gear cover, the fixing point sheared off. Then the larger lower part sheared off the main chassis. It is only connected by a thin stub.
Hornby initially said it was too old to be considered for repair so I decided to cut my losses and see if I could have a free-running, non-powered model. Sadly the chassis would not run freely enough around corners.
Hornby then said they would take a look but, a fortnight later, returned the loco saying it was too far gone. I am not too upset about this because they have been generous with other mazak-deteriorated models I have had.
Sorry for going on but modellers need to be careful with some Hornby models from this era. The Royal Scot and Patriot seemed to be vulnerable like the early T9s and 2005 Class 31s, amongst others.
At least I have spare motor!
    Keep up the good work!

Another great review! On you price comments, looking at the 1971 Triang-Hornby catalogue, you could buy a 4-6-0 loco for £4.50 (90 shillings!) that is about £68 in today's money. So in real terms, the list price has risen 3-fold since then. It's true that more recent locos are much more detailed, more accurate and better performers but surely not worth that kind of increase.

I paid $140 and $179 (about 106 and 129 pounds in 2021) in for the same locos which are now running about $270. Even the used loco market is getting very expensive.

I agree that £205 is too much but, in my view, one star is rather too harsh: 2 stars? I have one the models that dates from 2007. Out of the box it preferred running in reverse but, after running in, it preferred running forwards. Some of the original Royal Scot models from 2007ish tended to suffer from Mazak degeneration of the motor locating pieces. However, Hornby repaired mine very quickly and promptly for free. I would seriously be tempted to get another one like yours for £100 but I have obviously missed that boat! I suspect that your price is a result of Hornby selling off some surplus stock but the £205 price now is rather OTT. I do agree that a sprung plate underneath would be a real bonus.

I have an older version of the Hornby Patriot, which has the old style tender coupling. It runs a dream but I find it's pulling power isn't great. It seems to be a grip issue as the wheels slip if I give it more than 6 (modern Mk1) coaches. Wheels and track clean etc it just seems a little light on its feet. Love it though.

These locos have had a small bit of upgrading since the initial release 15 years ago. Initially, they had the 8-pin socket in the loco, with the older-style powered drawbar instead of the adjustable one with the 4-pin wired connection, and the original tender probably using the airfix-style clip coupling instead of NEM pockets.
I have 45545 Planet (not to be confused with my black 5 45455), in BR green, and it runs well.
I'd say 2005-2014ish were the golden days of hornby. Prices not too high, all the new locos introduced had decent detailing which are still pretty much to modern spec (excepting metal running plates, firebox glow, 21-pin or plux22 decoder sockets), before the Design Clever idea they had, and modern releases of these locos are often of a poorer quality than when initially released despite advances in tech.

I have a Hornby Royal Scot (R3517 Seaforth Highlander) which is almost identical and in the same livery with gold and red bands.
Even after playing 'spot the difference' and looking very, very closely I can only find two:
    1) The Royal Scot has a riveted tender rather than smooth.
    2) The Royal Scot has a small black box on the running plate between the 2nd and 3rd driving wheels.
Both have a 2007 tooling so I suspect Hornby use the same one for both models.

I'm sure I spotted some differences in their proportions, but it's been a while since I filmed this - will look again... but yes they're definitely very very similar!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@SamsTrains The Patriot was also known as the 'Baby Scot' so you may well be right about the proportions being slightly different, but if so I think you could only tell if you have the models next to each other.

look at the cab rear window on the patriot and see that there isn't one on the scot, just an opening.... otherwise i agree, very similar when rebuilt.

The fact that it's below your Gladstone (a loco really nice to see) says it all about the price, even if we consider that after the three "items" we got recently (covid, speculation and war) all prices are doubling and a terrible inflation is blasting the Western world.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 роки тому

haha yeah! Then again, not all prices are doubling... many model railway manufacturers have been able to maintain their prices... or increase them by very little! It seems some manufacturers have just used the opportunity to raise their prices!

hi sam I have recently watched your salvage or scrap series and that reminded me of a intercity 125 loco I have that is dead wont run and the paintwork has seen better days. I have previously sent it to someone experienced in model trains in my family. They sadly could not get it to run :( However I am not giving up and I know you are very very experienced in this sort of thing so wondered if you had any tips or could help me hopefully salvage my 125.
hopefully it wont go to the scrap Man. Thank you sam and keep up the good work on the best youtube channel ever

I'm not sure that fitting the scale coupling from the factory is a good thing. On my heritage railway-based layout locos need to be able to haul coaches in both directions, so I need to fit the tension locks. If a scale coupling is fitted then it will need to be removed, something which is quite dificult to do without breaking them. I would prefer them to arrive with a bare front end so that you can just fit the parts you need.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 роки тому

True - it would interfere with a front coupling if fitted... possibly better to see it just included in the accessories bag... but definitely glad to see it included at all! :D

Hi Sam, At the price you paid this engine is a nice buy. But I 100% do agree with you: the RRP is ridiculous ! And as usual QC for made in China is non existing so it's always a risk - as with any product coming from there. Your honest reviews are a great and excellent 'buyer guide' info. Thanks Sam! Kind regards, Filip

Hi Sam, nice to see a Patriot 😎 Shame that you were able to find such fault with it, though. I was looking forward to denting my bank account again, but now I am not so sure. Then again, even if the current price is a rip-off, it certainly seems worth it when you get a 100% discount 😅 As for the name: I suspect the people of Rhyl will be right riled! Beware next time you go to North Wales 😜
Shame that the Unknown Soldier project has been beset by terrible setbacks, the latest absolute disaster being that they had scrap all the driving wheels before they even turned a wheel in anger 🙄🤦
It is annoying when they charge that much and don’t give you metal running plates and can’t even get the glueing right. Such a shame as there is the basis for a great loco otherwise, which I’d hope for as one of my favourite classes. I had a Hornby “Lady Godiva” once upon a time (1980s model) which ran like a watch but obviously wasn’t this detailed. That said, I’d suggest it was better value (and better quality controlled) that your one at the proper price! 🤔
Strange one isn’t it: a model that is soooo very nice in so many respects. And yet…And yet…🤷🏻‍♂️
Hmmm…despite it all, I am still tempted to ‘fill the gap” in my LMS fleet. But even if I can get it at a small price, the lack of accessibility is still a concern…🤔
    We’ll see! Cheers mate 🍀🍻👍
PS: I literally just realised as I posted this that, quite by chance, I was drinking my tea that Clair just gave me from my Patriot Fund cup while I watched this! 🤣😂😅

I don't think I like single driven axles. When the middle wheels move but the others don't, as on the Bachmann Thomas in both its liveries, it irks me. Is it necessary to have all a locomotive's driving wheels have driven axles?

Just like Horny to 'Hike' up the prices - Last November 2021 - I bought from my Local Model shop "Early BR Lord Nelson Class 'Lord Rodney' No. 50863" - R3635 & he charged me £155.00 but the old Hornby Price was £169.99 but the new Hornby price when I bought it at the time was £186.99 - guess what - they have put up the price even more now (11/04/2022) it is ££205.99!!! I Just glad I bought it when I did!!! 🤔🚂🚂🚂
