Ship Squat Effect - Maritime Shorts
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лис 2021
- Ship squat effect is the decrease in under keel clearance of the ship because of a ship moving in shallow water.
There are 3 main factors that affect Squat -
Speed of the ship
Block coefficient
Blockage factor of the canal
Squat must be taken into consideration when calculating the under keel clearance of the vessel.

Thanks for this information bro.
Always welcome
Squat is also increased by:
- Greater acceleration rate
- Meeting/passing situations
- Vessel roll
- It's function of the square of velocity. Double the velocity and get 4x squat
The three main factor that effect squate : 1) Speed of the ship. 2)Block Coefficient. 3)Blockage factor of canal.
Always amazingly informative content, and always easy to grasp.
Thank you

Excelente explicación de este importante y peligroso efecto, sobre todo para los bulck-carriers.
Thanks
These videos are fantastic, and help interested amateurs to understand these complex dynamic effects and how mariners need to be on constant lookout!! I remember reading once that the Bernoulli Effect had a domestic impact because the wind blowing across the top of chimney-pots (…my house is a 4 story Victorian terraced house in London with 10 (now unused) fireplaces.) causes low pressure in the chimney pots and that draws my warm air up through the fireplaces and chills the house with cold air drawn in from outside.
That's why you should always close your flue when you are not using the chimney.
please why ship is sinkage to compensate what i have confusion?
Also angular momentum caused by the propeller thrust.
Block coefficent and speed of the vessel.
Both are directly proportion to squat effect.
just had it on my classes today. also less saline water could cause it and ofc water temperature increase
Initially ship sinks little to compensate low pressure, even after that ship is pushing water ahead does it cause the same low pressure and causes the ship to sink more
Well explained thanks🙏
Glad it was helpful!
what's the cursing speed of ship and how calculated for any ship and range of speed
When Cb is > 0.7 more squatting will be experienced at bow if < 0.7 then more squatting will be experienced at the stern of the vessel
When I swim in deep water its effortless but not in shallow water. Now I know why...
I like this video ❤️
Great
What is smelling ground plz explain
Waiting next video
Nice Karthik 😍😍😍
🙏
Isn't this the same as the ground effect in F1?
is it possible to have squat to the bow ?
Yes
Good information bro
Thank you @Anga Suresh
Ship's speed
Yeah if the speed of the ship increases depth of the ship will increase
It's not the depth of the ship that increases but it's the draft of the ship that increases. The depth of any ship is always constant as it's a fixed parameter determined by Naval Architects at the time of ship building.! 😊
Yes, speed affects the squat of the ship👍
Thanks
