- I was a mellophone player in the 93 & 94 Cadets of Bergen County. I became a High School Band Director & did that from 1998-2000, then moved on to training bank Underwriters @ USAA Federal Savings Bank for 7 years from 2001-2009. I am now a performing “country music” songwriter, entertainer, & recording artist playing on “Texas Radio.” I just landed my first Top 40 last year with “Movie Night” See my Country music videos on my main channel “Felix Truvere” www.Felix.Band
After a full day of rehearsal on 114 degree Astroturf in Houston, TX, the Cadets end a 14 hour rehearsal with a run-through of the entire show to incorporate a new ending just learned THAT DAY in preparation for the DCI SOUTHWEST REGIONAL the next day at Rice Stadium and the DCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS is only one week away in Jackson, MS. Typical of the Cadets (IF they are in the running to win) to make such last-minute changes to maybe regard some “suggestions” those judges mighta been mentioning & perhaps just add a bangin NEW ending to gain those extra 10ths of a point. It came down to JUST that against Star of Indiana (FANTASTIC CORPS THEY WERE!).
This was truly a brutal rehearsal. Houston was STUPID hot. I remember a baritone player went down with a heat-stroke. Ambulance had to come & all... After he went down we got more water-breaks. I actually have hours of raw footage from this rehearsal but this will just show you our run-through after a BRUTAL day.

I’ll be damned if this isn’t the best drum corps show of all time.
STILL, after all these years one of my favorite drumcorps shows of all time. I feel that this show really holds up pretty well, even today. What a great thing to be able to hear this 93 Cadets corps live and in person. I was there at Rice Stadium to see the competition and it was amazing.
My favorite drum corps show ever.
FHNSAB...
Yeah it's time for the Cadets to bring this back to the field!! It was waaaaay ahead of it's time!! Difficult fast pace drills and music is my sweet spot!!
As a San Antonio native and someone who marches with a top twelve corps it's cool to see that SA has had an extensive corps background. Keep rockin that country music, man
I recall vividly taping this on my dinosaur video camera back in '93!! I was so amazed. My kid, Felix Juarez, is the one with the black, white and blue checkered shorts!! You'll see himn in the center of the video from time to time. There movement was fast and precise!! Amazing rehearsal after spending all day in the hot sun! This was about 10:30 that night!! Cadets!! Awesome!! World Champions in 1993!!
My daddy wrote this comment 6 years ago… sadly my daddy died from covid on 4/16/21 :( I am a country artist still today; doing well with songs on Texas radio. My dad & family all caught Covid at my acoustic show on 3/6/21. Mom almost did not make it; today she is okay… loss of my dad was devastating though. He was so supportive, videoing every show I ever did from my high school drum majoring, to drum corps, to the stages I play today. Miss you so much dad; you were a PERFECT dad. ❤️
Thanks for posting this! It's great to see the elbow, and nothing sounds like a G. FHNSAB

I've always wondered how the development of Cadets marching style came to be. They don't really follow the normal rules.. they step off with the right foot instead of the left, they do that weird arm cock, they lift their toes at the end of backwards steps, the legs are uncomfortably straight, and they have no interest in looking smooth (bouncing seems to be encouraged). Any other corps would be shredded for that style but for them it just works.
I marched mellophone 93, 94. The “elbow” move was VERY popular. We lifted the elbow one count after after a “stop n go” direction change from forward to backward, which also lifted the heel up to put us on our toes for our backward marching technique, somewhat uncomfortably as you mention… but it felt cool as shit to do it in unison & brand our “look.” Yes we absolutely bounced; I remember accentuating that as our plumes helped amplify it nicely. lol… yeah we know EXACTLY what your talking about. 👍🏼 like “toy soldiers.”
