Hello Spouse Reacts ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you liked the powerful performance of the band. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs (with links) with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory):

@Nightwish Arena: Since most of the reactors end up doing a lot of reactions from Wacken 2013 concert, they should be warned that there are a lot of slowed down and even high pitched versions of this concert, so it is better to use only official videos or this version of the whole concert: ua-cam.com/video/cAwtzi7Q3Bk/v-deo.html
Last but not the least - they released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg.html (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..)
The links presented above are with the current singer of the band, Floor Jansen, since I'm a fan of the recent era of the band, with Floor as the singer. That being said, I will add here the messages left the other days by some old fans of the band.
@Fabrizio Gorla: To be fair to the old fanbase, you may want to include also some of these songs.

Fellow Nightwish Army recruits, you need to chill a bit and let people react how they react and think what they think. Just because we all love Nightwish, doesn't mean everybody else does. And to be perfectly honest, they were very respectful, they just said they aren't in to the type music the song was which is very understandable.
Let's not stain the Nightwish fanbase reputation with ill-willed comments. Rock on everybody! 😊

Hi, thank you for reacting to Nightwish. I think you can't judge them just by listening to this song once. This is one of those songs that gets better if you listen to it more than once. Also, there is a huge variety in their song catalog. They have really heavy songs too, as well as celtic sounding songs, beautifull ballads and more. You'll get something different with every song. So don't write them off just yet, they probably have songs you'll love. Greetings from the Netherlands.

And if it's Disney you're into this singer, Floor Jansen. has recorded a cover of Into the Unknown from Frozen 2 and Let it Go from Frozen. Plus she performs a killer version of Shallow.

If it's not your cup of tea, it's not your cup of tea. As a Nigtwish fan since 1997, I appreciate your recognition of the world-class musicisnship on display here but I will say this: now that you have stumbled upon Nightwish, you have a rear opportunity to explore a world of music that is (in my opinion) head and shoulders above the maistream crap we hear eveywhere these days. Every song (litterarily every song) has its own charachter and art expression and a deapth of lyrics coupled with with selfless and generous servitute to what the song needs not what their ego needs. Every chord, every note, every hand gesture, every interlude and every break-down are meticulously thought of and planned and expertly executed on stage. Their live shows are once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I am 55 years old and every time they make me feel 18 again. Please, do yourselves a favour and take the Nightwish journey with an open mind. I promiss you, it is well worth it. Cheers.
P.S. Gabriel should be here anytime now to give you the roadmap to this journey...

Nightwish Army New York here. No two songs sound the same. You want something a little heavier try listening to Romanticide from this same show. Or maybe Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, or I Want My Tears Back, both of these from their Buenos Aires live show. If none of them do it for y'all, then I guess symphonic metal is just not for you.

LOL. I'm asking you to try another sip. They don't have 3 minute radio friendly songs. They have many shorter than GLS. NW Army will name a few for you. Hope to see another reaction ( sip ) soon. Fair enough. Appreciate your honesty. Nice to see in a reaction. I have to say however that this is one song out of more than 20 years of music creation by Nightwish. They have a broad range of styles in their songs. You really owe yourself a listen to at least of couple more of more songs. I'm 67 years old, and have been deep into music since the 50s (my Mom used to work at Capital Records so we always has music playing). Nightwish is easily the best band, making the best music, since the turn of the century.

Let's keep in mind that your ear is not accustomed to the complexity of the music that is put out by many of these European bands. Fortunately for us, they're not limited to producing three minutes of pablum to satisfy the dumbed down requirements of the American music industry. What that means for you though is that it will take multiple passes through these songs before you can start to appreciate what is happening.
Typical pop songs are played in one key, 4/4 time signature and follow the typical verse, chorus, verse, chorus structure. That didn't happen here. Music pros listening to Ghost Love Score have picked out lots of interesting things and here's a sampling of what they found. The song did not follow traditional pop music structures, instead borrowed from classical music. The song frequently shifted time signatures to change the feel. In just the intro they were in a 6/8 to 5/8, then they transitioned to a 4/4, 3/4 and then onto a straight 4/4 in half time. That's all before Floor Jansen started to sing. Another pro found that they used five keys and transitioned between them 16 times during the song. This is like classical music played by a metal band.
All that to say - you'll need more than one listen to appreciate what this song is about.

@@spousereacts5720 Forgot to mention that on the backing tracks of Nightwish songs we hear the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Metro Voices choir, plus a children's choir whose name I can never remember.
Nightwish has had the London Philharmonic as a collaborator since 2004. Tuomas Holopainen, the Nightwish keyboardist, does all of the orchestral compositions and the general arrangement. The orchestra then fine tunes what he sends them to adapt his work to their acoustic instrumentation.
Here's a part of a documentary which describes their working relationship with the orchestra: ua-cam.com/video/r0ivbQz3IGI/v-deo.html

A big welcome to the Nightwish Universe - and I think it's completely understandable that you are not into Nightwish music. In the US, you don't have Symphonic Metal, which is the merge of symphony and metal music. Complexed compositions with deep poetic lyrics, often created in chapters like symphony music, and written in layers - all the ensure that the audience gets an experience of each song. And you can't tell a deep story in 3 - 4 minutes, which is the max in the US (your music, radio and TV are money driven, and the investors need as many songs as possible pr hour).
In the rest of the world, Symphonic Metal is huge, because of the phenomenal musicians, compositions and singers - with Nightwish being the top of the range. Tuomas (keyboard) is a known as "the Metal Mozart", and that is not wrong. Floor Jansen is the most versatile, powerful and talented singer in this century, that's also a well-known secret - she is unique.
But that being said - music is individual taste, and many people prefer lighter digestible music and storues, that won't grab their attention too much - music and stories you can sing along on and be happy to sing along on.
Nightwish / Symphonic Metal is designed to give experiences - and it is by far the best as live music - not the studio versions. And to do this, you need the absolute top of the top of musicians and singers.
    Like in:
"Sleeping Sun" - Tampere 2015 - a beautiful ballad about the Solar Eclipse in 1999 - Floor spellbinding 24.000 people in trance.
    Or
"Kiss while your lips are still red" - Wembley 2015 - a sweet duet of a love song and Troy on E-bow to enhance the experience.
    Or
"The Poet and the Pendulum" - Wembley 2015 - a journey through a deep personal depression - a masterpiece of music, that only Nightwish and Floor can do Justice.
Or party songs like "Alpenglow" (Tampere 2015) or "I want my tears back" (Buenos Aires 2018) - Floor goes crazy with the South Americans in a giant party.
Nightwish have it all - but it will never be everyone's cup of tea. 👍
Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 👍 🤘🤘

    Great reaction.
Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a spinto soprano with a range of almost four octaves (D3-G#5-F6). When listening to her sing, it is apparent that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a Master vocal coach. It is incredible how she is able to take any song from any genre and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal, Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. Welcome to the Nightwish rabbit hole. Nightwish Army U.S.A. 🇺🇸🤘🏽 ( Urban Operators ) in the house.

She has at least 4 octaves, she herself said in an interview in 2016 that her range is 4 octaves, a lot of time has passed since 2016, and her range has become larger, now I am sure that the range of Floor is definitely more 4 octaves, maybe even 5 octaves or more than 5 octaves.

Private Marshall Nightwish Army reporting for duty. Glad you enjoyed it SR. There is so much more. This entire concert can be reacted to from the beginning, one song at a time. There are no bad songs and each one you hear is very different from the other. And each one will become your new favorite. That might sound ridiculous but we have seen it over and over again. This is a live band. This is a rarity that the live music is better than the engineered versions. Stick with live.

I've seen a few other reactors say that this wasn't their cup of tea. However, if you stop here you will miss out on some really great songs. This was a medium Metal song. Half the songs in their repertoire are Heavy Metal. You already know that the band and singer are world-class. The 82,000 fans at the concert know that too. Here's a heavier (and shorter) song from the same concert.😀🤘 Romanticide: ua-cam.com/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/v-deo.html ...OR, you mentioned Frozen. Well guess what? Floor recently did a cover of that in her home studio. She poured just a little metal sauce on it to spice it up. IMO it's better than the original. This song is one that usually gets recommended first for Nightwish and first time reactions can be that it great but not what they would listen to regularly, but the more songs you hear from them they start to show their heavy metal style. Nightwish is fantastic and you guys should definitely try their more rocking songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself, Everdream, and Storytime from the same live Wacken 2013 show. Shorter songs that are more headbangers with Floor Jansen showing off her incredible windmill skills along with amazing vocals!!!

This Nightwish show at Wacken Open Air 2013 is legendary good. Nightwish are a very tight band and their singer Floor Jansen (aka "the Valkyrie Goddess") from the Netherlands is probably the most versatile vocalist in metal (and almost all other musical styles, maybe you want to check out her performances for the Dutch TV-show Beste Zangers 2019). She is classicaly trained and can sing in an operatic style but also knows how to do deep growls. Almost 95% of Nightwishs music and lyrics are written by the keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen (aka "Metal Mozart"). In 2013 there were 82.000 people attending on that evening. At the time of this show in August of 2013 Floor had been with the band for just 10 months after she stepped in for the previous vocalist Anette Olzon from Sweden who got sick and couldn't continue Nightwishs Imaginarum World Tour. Just shortly after this concert Floor was officially announced as the new permanent singer of the band (together with the second new member: British multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockly who wasn't on stage for this song).
Some info about this metal festival: It takes place every August on cattle pastures nearby the village of Wacken (pop.: 2000) in northern Germany. It was founded in 1990 where 6 local bands played for 800 visitors. Over the years it grew and got more international. They had to limit the official tickets to 75.000 and were sold out every year since 2010. In 2019 there were people from 84 countries listening to 200 international bands performing on 9 stages on these three festival days. It has a very peaceful atmosphere and feels like a family gathering after a long time of not seeing each other, even if it is just your first time there. Unfortunately it had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. The next festival is planned for August 4th to August 6th 2022. The flaming bullshead is the symbol of W:O:A (Wacken Open Air).

The problem with Anette wasn't her illness. It was flu with a high fever and there was only one concert without her. She had a long quarrel with the band. After her return from the hospital, it finally escalated and she was fired in the middle of the ongoing tour. Floor only had 48 hours to take over and it took 20 hours to get from the Netherlands to Seattle.
And Valkyries are not goddesses. I always ask myself: If she has delivered the dead Nightwish fans to Odin, does she only sing to them on the flight? And can Odin replace her or is Valhalla a disaster because you can no longer hear Floor and instead have to endure Odin? ;-)

@@Mischnikvideos Thank you for this more detailed explanation. You are absolutey right and of course I know that, but I just didn't want to lengthen my comment even more than it already was because I wanted to explain a bit about Wacken too. I thought there are so many Nightwish fans that someone already mentioned or will mention the exact circumstances of the exchange of the vocalists. I own the DVD and have watched this Wacken show several times and the second disc "Please lern the setlist in 48 hours" too. I tend to write very long comments when I am really into a theme or band and I just didn't want to let it become too long so I shortened this part a bit. You could write a whole book about the history of Nightwish if you want to explain everything in detail.

Floor Jansen (pronounced YAHN-sen) is the singer-- while the band is Finnish, she is a Nederlander, a classically trained soprano who is also, among other things, a voice coach and horsewoman (rides dressage.) You mentioned Frozen-- Floor has a killer UA-cam channel on which she does covers, two of which are from the Frozen films (and she blows away the originals.) And this is symphonic metal, btw, huge in Europe and S. America but just catching on finally in North America. Take a metal band, add a classically trained singer along with symphony and choral tracks.

00:56 the "W" pronounces as a "V," so it’s "Vah-kin." 11:25 that was the Floorgasm, and the first time I heard it it knocked me out!! Her name is Floor Jansen (the J pronounces as a Y) so it’s Yawn-sin. Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. To each his own, but …… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Every one of there songs are different. From heavy metal to Ballet. Floor Jensan is arguably one of the best vocalist today. You may enjoy more of her solo vocals or on the show
Beste Zangers. (Best Singers) also there Bass players vocals are incredible. Check out their tribute to Pink Floyd. High Hopes. Or the Islander. And Kiss while your lips are still red. You will be impressed. Again every one of their songs are different it's hard to judge them on your first listen to a song that you didn't really care for. I hope you decide to take another listen.

    Your selfcritic is on point!
    Here comes some constructive criticism.
These are the things you should not change:
    - Making us know how much you know about the band/song. Even with other upcoming songs.
    - The sound on your talk and the music. Levels are nice.
    - Going in blind (except 2 songs of Nightwish.... TPATP and TGSOA)
    - Lightning and background is good.
Now to what you can, and almost must do, improve to make the channel grow:
    - Headspace. 1/3 of your screen is "unused". Lower the camera and then enlarge the screen to let us experience it with you.
    - Visual engagement (wife)
    - Do NOT have the lyrics up when you react. It takes the focus away from what we want to see a reaction to. We don't want to see you read lyrics. That can be done before or after.
    - Pausing one time to give "halftime" review is not annoying.
    - Giving it 10 out of 10 and not wanting to listen to it again, just makes no sense. How can we compare your score with other songs that you appreciate ( 10/10 ) and want to listen to again?
    - You can manage without drinking for 16 minutes. That takes away your focus and is annoying to see.
This is just an attempt to help and you don't have to listen to anything of my suggestions. It's just 1 person's opinion.
Much Love to both of you 💙💛💙

Agree with all you say. I much prefer the reaction where they make themselves small and the band/singer big. It gives a much better experience. I do like the fact that they use headphones because I did notice that those who don't often have crappy audio.

I can totally see why this exact song is not for all. It's just so different compared to everything else. However I hope you guys give them another chance. Everdream or Storytime are usually the ones that get people going. They are constructed a bit more traditionally but still shows how amazing group of musicians these people are.

perhaps if you had heard storytime from the same show would possibly have been a better introduction to Nightwish for you as it has a more traditional style rock structure. by the way Floor has done a couple of frozen covers. Oh and no she doesnt have an accent, she speaks better English than some native English speaking people. Opera or classical singing, yep she can do that too.

You expected her to scream and the band to be heavier? Well, they do that too.
Then again, if you like songs like you hear them everywhere (intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, maybe a bridge and then another chorus, and definitely not longer than 3 minutes), forget about them.
