Listen to the church sing! When we begin to sing “All hail King Jesus”, the congregation erupts, affirming the lordship and sovereignty of Christ. This is one of my favorite moments each year.
Even though we’ve played this song many times through the years, every year brings fresh anticipation. Anticipation over the words that we’ll be singing (more on that below), of course. 😊 Also, there’s great anticipation over the joy that comes with playing this God-honoring song with my two greatest friends. The bass player and his son are my DUDES! We do life together, which includes following and loving Christ. We also make music together, which is a shared passion that brings us a lot of joy and has been a source of many great memories. God is so good to give us this gift!

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
as far as the curse is found.
Ever since the fall, the curse of sin has spread to all people. It has affected and infected our bodies, minds and wills. To this day, sin continues to spread, and sorrows continue to grow. Even as we gather this morning, we can be sure that sin has sunk its teeth into each one here, leaving a fresh wound or a scar from a past one. Yet, we still gather this morning to sing “Joy to the world…let men their songs employ…repeat the sounding joy!”
As children of God, as those who have placed their full trust in Christ, we share the same fallen nature as the rest of humanity. We still struggle with our own sin, the sin of others, and the harsh realities that sin brings, such as pain, sickness, mental struggles, and death. Yet, we still rejoice.
Why?
"He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust." - Psalm 103
The Lord knows our plight. Because of the incarnation, he also FEELS our plight.
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then, with confidence, draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” - Hebrews 4:14-16
