I feel the story could have ended near the hour mark and it would have made much more sense, but they just dragged it on for another hour and the longer it went on the less and less I enjoyed it
Basically, to do Black Adam justice, you really need a series, not a movie. A movie has to appeal to the widest possible audience, so it has to be super-safe. A guy declaring himself to not be a hero while only actually killing incredibly evil people is as edgy as a blockbuster can really get. Black Adam is basically Super-Dexter, but Dexter could never be a blockbuster movie character, even if you gave him powers.
The guy is really trying to say that he's abstained from murdering every single villain he's ever gone against lol. Yeah, totally believe you, Hawkman.
JSA: Heroes don't kill people! JSA: Proceed to smash up an entire city, killing who knows how many hundreds of civilians, just to arrest the recently revived "protector of said city"!
Says the guy who uses a mace as his weapon lol. Foreal tho I’m no expert on the character but I could swear Hawkman didn’t have much of a problem with killing some of the comics I’ve read with him.
While I was watching BA, I couldn't help but feel that Shazam needed to be in this. The film could've used the parallels of Adam's son and Billy being the same age and BA could tell Billy how naive he's being about using his powers. Something like that.
They're likely keeping that plotpoint for Shazam 3. I can see Black Adam being defeated because he's able to turn Billy back into a kid, realizing Billy is just like his kid (if not a little modern), and hesitating because he sees himself as harming his son. In this moment of hesitation, Billy yells "shazam!" turning him back into Shazam and Adam into En'Sabanur, Billy/Shazam then using this opportunity to incapacitate him.
I think Black Adam will be in Shazam three (if we get one), the big finale to the trilogy with Shazam’s Nemisis. Plus we wouldn’t have to waste time with a villain origin because he got his own little side project first
the issue of killing or not killing bad guys was explored much better in Netflix's Daredevil. the arguments between the punisher and daredevil really hit the mark
That or batman. I honestly thought they were going to explore more about him having that perception because hes someone from the ancient world. I mean he did kind of sarcastically talk about how it's the modern way to be more merciful and all, but I thought that's act a gold explanation and it would give room for the other characters to be more understanding towards him maybe.
Really the whole thing is undermined by the fact that the lead heroes of the universe were shown as killers and that neither side of the argument is actually given the nuance they could have.
I found it odd that the JLS never gave an explanation as to why they, or the Justice League in general, allowed Kahndaq to be overlorded by international mercenaries, or that the movie never addressed the fact that Adrianna Tomaz is the reincarnation of Black Adam's wife.
Well it's mostly because it's not their problem. A paramilitary group taking over some small middle eastern country doesn't upset global stability all that much
@@aguywithalotofopinions412 indeed. Yet Hawkman can't be promising to restore peace to Kahndaq when he was oblivious to their years of subjugation. The locals certainly weren't going to take him seriously.
because is not the interest of USA protect a little country and the international mercenaries there's american companies among them. this is the critic of the movie, but just people from 3th world understood it (I'm from brazil). and like a nuclear weapon they send the superman in the end.
Someone pointed out to me that even though The Rock was the first WWE star to make it as a Hollywood actor, he doesn't really have that one iconic role that defines his career. Bautista has Drax, and even the character he played in Blade Runner because of how shockingly good he is as a dramatic actor. John Cena has Peacemaker. The Rock just plays variations of the same character
He does have an iconic role in Hobbs from Fast Five. But my problem is he doesn't wanna go anywhere beyond that. Which is a shame. If you let Bautista upstage you in acting that should say something.
I always felt like The Rock could give an iconic, show stopping performance as Lex Luther or Bane if he ever could fully accept being the villain that loses
@@SuperMurray2009 I wouldn’t call that iconic. In fact that feels more generic than most of his roles. I think the problem is The Rock’s brand itself outshines any role that he plays, but that’s what brings the money. Attaching his name to anything guarantees a half billion dollar box office draw.
Honestly I found the concept of Kahndaq being overtaking by the Intergang and the talk of American forces only intervening when it suits them interesting. That the people worship Adam but hate Intergang and JSA I think is interesting and should have been highlighted more
The issue with that is that if you travel too far down that path you’re gonna start criticizing the powers and governments and systems that allowed all that to happen. And then suddenly your film is presenting an anticapitalist message, which is the last thing a capitalist filmmaker like DC would wanna do.
I didn’t like that aspect of the movie. That dynamic with the kid was basically just copying Shazam and Freddie. They were both experts on superheroes.
the kid playing Amon’s line delivery took me out of the story every time he spoke. Granted, they didn’t give him much to work with and he’s like 15 playing the role of someone who is prob supposed to be younger than that (based on the characterization anyway)
Disliked Amon as well, the kid can't act, and his voice took me out of it also, the minute he started talking at the beginning of the movie, I was like "Nah."
And since you gloss over it pretty quickly, I'd take the time to argue that the Skeleton Army is actually a much bigger problem then it appears. The reason being, that so much of the movie's running time has the Crown of Sabbac as a McGuffin, with multiple characters going on about how dangerous it is and how it absolutely needs to be kept out of the wrong hands. Heck, keeping the Crown out of the wrong hands is shown to be the one thing the feuding Black Adam, JSA, and Tomaz all agree on. So its built up as a pretty big deal. But when the bad guy gets the crown, and the demons who empower him command him to bring "Hell on Earth", what's the best he can do? A bunch of skeletons who are so utterly pathetic that random civilians (including folks who, let's be real, aren't exactly in great physical shape), are able to easily take them down with improvised weapons. In other words, the best this demon supervillain can do is call forth minions who are in every way WORSE than the minions he had as the head of Intergang. Where those guys were super technologically advanced and actually could keep Khandaq's people in line, the skeletons are utterly pathetic. Again, this may seem like a small point, but I don't think it is. I think it badly undercuts the threat posed by the villain and his McGuffin crown that (again) so many characters spent so much of the movie speaking fearfully of, if the worst that happens is we get some easily disposed of Skeletons. How is that bringing Hell on Earth? I feel like, in order to be worthy of that, and also to justify all the fear everyone had of this crown, there needed to be something way more formidable brought forwards.
They should have dropped the skeleton scene and done more with Intergang using the etherium weapon technology. It’s like the used their only rocket at the beginning and had no more
Doesn’t the villain use the crown to become Sabbac? Sure, the zombie dudes were lame, but considering that Sabbac killed Dr. Fate, and was on par with Black Adam (or perhaps even stronger than him since BA needed Hawkman’s help, and Hawkman needed Fate’s helmet), it still doesn’t undermine how dangerous the crown was.
@@sfkapacheoutlaw5348 It undermines it somewhat though. Because powerful supervillains are something that universe has seen before. The demons still commanded him to "bring Hell on Earth" and in that he failed spectacularly. So I still think it's a problem with the movie's climax.
@@daniellauricella5132 But you were making it seem like the skeleton army was a big problem for the movie because it made it seem like this crown that everybody feared this whole time was actually weak, and that there was no reason to fear it at all. And that’s simply not the case. Sabbac by himself is enough reason to fear the crown and keep it out of the wrong hands. The bigger problem was that the hell army just wasn’t needed to begin with.
I think that this movie had great potential in exploring the ideas of victims vs oppressors (in relation to the King’s reign, Black Adam’s backstory, and modern Candaq), justice vs vengeance (in relation to the JUSTICE Society of America), and good vs evil (in terms of heroes and villains) and how antiheroes blur the line between these ideas and whether they have good reason to. But it just sucks, like you said, how they seem to take the lazy route on some of these concepts.
Instead of dig deep into the theme, they’re just keep going back and forth with “U can’t kill people” “Well I do”, fucking 5 years old wrote this dialogue
Haven't seen it, but I've heard about the skeleton army that civilians get to "kill", just to keep the PG-13 rating, vs the actual human goons that those civvies could have killed, thus challenging the theme into an R rating, but the 8-13 age, exorbitant budget demo can't have that. So it's like I always say: "It's like 9/11, y'know, FOR THE KIDS."
also they couldve made it like the comics where nabu, hawkman, and black adam knew eachother thousands of years ago. it wouldve made their interactions with him more worthwhile and special
I gonna be brutally honest here even though I liked this movie I would rather watch a full length movie on doctor fate he was the most interesting character and I personally love him in everything I see him in happy Halloween 👻 🎃 ❤
I think they were concerned about the fact Doctor Strange came out so recently, and casual fans would think they're just ripping him off, given how similar their powers are.
"I have nothing against these two, but they feel like they could be almost entirely dropped from the movie" lmaoooo that's exactly what I said after I watched the movie
In terms of Black Adam comic lore, this movie leans far more heavily into early 2000's stuff and The New 52, which makes sense since those 2000's books were the most recent comics coming out around the time The Rock was cast as the character so that was probably always a loose framework for him and where the JLA stuff comes from, and then the New 52 was just obvious since Shazam! as a movie was a more polished (and better) version of those early New 52 Shazam backup stories in Justice League, so I kinda just assumed Adam would draw from that source material too (although thankfully not as much, I'm sorry I hate harping on it I just really freaking dislike Geoff Johns Shazam so much).
A character that has his wife and son killed right in front of him, who then proceeds to go on a mercilessly bloody rampage after godly powers are bestowed upon him, only to realize he’s become the monster he sought to destroy and has become a terrible example to his new son-like figure, and must change to show good can come from evil? Where have I seen this before? I swear I’ve seen this, but I just can’t put my finger on it. Oh well. *Goes back to playing God of War*
The problem with Black Adam is that he didn't drop The People's Elbow on Sabbac. Seriously though, I agree with most of this. I think some of Fate and Hawkman's scenes were done a disservice by their costumes being a little too much, but that's a personal taste thing. Big agree on Atom's costume, when they said he borrowed his uncles suit I wanted some campy, colorful, old school comics shit. I guess that would look pretty out of place, though.
Speaking of “the People’s elbow,” I don’t like his WWE-like booking. He’s the Roman Reigns of the box office, always has to “look strong,” sometimes to the detriment of the film. Arnold is one of my favorites because he did have times when his characters were gotten the best of.
I liked their suits. Sure hawkman's was a bit too new 52 but it was pretty good, and dr fates was perfect. Although it was kinda a missed opportunity for a old-school style suit with atom smasher, but wouldn't really fit with the rest of their designs.
So 1. I was disappointed that Black Adam did little with Adrianna’s status as Isis in the comics. Given how oddball the character’s TV origins are. And 2. If you want great Justice Society content, watch Stargirl. Between it, Superman & Lois and Peacemaker, DC’s TV shows remain pretty solid.
Well this was a black adam movie and they already took a risky step with adding other characters, which worked out good but then isis and her gaining powers would be something much more extra in it plus the prime Justice society stuff we haven't got it, now I watch stargirl and it's good but it's more of a legacy characters and black adam also showed them in twilight phase with most of the team retired and passing down their mantle and one or two Og team heroes coming back. We haven't recieve them in their full glory.
It was FUN movie. The action was non-stop fun. The actors did a good job. The comedy wasn't excessive and cringe. I also liked the changes they made to his origin. Enjoyed it alot more then 90% of the MCU phase 4 content overload.
I honestly disliked the fact they changed his origin from being a man who killed his nephew to take the powers. It would've tied in better to him being viewed as an anti-hero/villain.
I love all your videos. The unresolved “do heroes kill?” debate seemed intentional. The theme wasn’t the debate, the theme was Black Adam didn’t even care to debate it. In his mind it is resolved. There is no debate. Do have him struggle with the concept would not be consistent with the character they developed. I think you missed that somehow. I would say the lack of debate was a feature-not a bug. It was actually a novel approach to “do heroes kill?”
That isn't the problem. The problem is that even though he kills, he only kills usless goons that probably deserve it. There is no point in the film where they hint at him being evil. The only conflict is that his rage sometimes makes him. lose control of his power. Even then, that's still partially out of his control. They played this movie way to safe, it feels like any other average superhero movie.
@@Marc-rw3dd He’s want really evil though. It pointed out the JSA,s naïveté in terms of morality and world politics. I also like that by learning to control his rage he doesn’t see that you shouldn’t kill people, he sees that you should control it so you don’t kill innocent people.
My favorite role from the Dwayne Johnson was when he was in Ballers. He was pill popping money manager for sports players. It showed his ranges and that he can play a regular person.. few scenes he was able to make me feel what he’s feeling.
I don’t understand how people complain about superhero fatigue then say they loved Black Adam. It’s one of the most by the books CBM in recent time. Decent action, bad writing, bad plot, and bad CGI third act.
@@ninjanibba4259 I think the main reason a lot of people say it was great is because nearly all the superhero shows and movies have been utter garbage recently.
@@malware5306 not really tho. Loki, NWH Shang Chi, The Batman, TSS, Peacemaker, The Boys, Invincible, werewolf by night and Moon Knight have all been solid to great superhero projects and they’re wayyyy better than Black Adam. I’m honestly baffled that so many people consider Black Adam great.
I think it would’ve been interesting if the Mom put on the crown and became a villain herself, trying to take over the world as a way to get revenge on the way Kahndaq has been treated by the rest of the world, it would’ve also mirrored how Teth became a villain by taking revenge for his family, it could’ve been really interesting
ngl, I thought that what was going to happen, and she was gonna put her son's life in danger, and black adam tells her not to walk this path and she comes to her sense's.
This! Honestly, it’s the thing I think of the most when I hear The Rock. It’s the peak of “Actor Persona” feeding the “Character,” going so far as to shape the audience’s perception of The Rock and his fame as a major flaw for Maui to overcome! Edit: Grammer
No, he was pretty obnoxious, in fact he was the reason why that movie fell apart so badly past the first act. Constantly getting tedious 4th wall breaks on how "old Disney tropes lame lmao" got old fast since Frozen, and Moana could have REALLY spared that nonsense. Plus, Maui is essentially treated as a "toxic masculinity" point as he's the guy who turns the Mother Goddess into a fiery demon just because he was insecure.
I've seen the movie four times already. The weakest parts of the movie are the script and The third act villain. Here are the things that stood out to me during the thrill ride: 1. Black Adamn's theme music is menacing and heroic at the same time. Definitely one of the better theme music in superhero films. 2. Black Adam was badass. Definitely want to see more of him. 3. I've never ever cared about Hawkman, but he was involved in some of the best action sequences throughout the movie. Plus, his costume was top notch. 3. Doctor Fate looked majestic. His magic was severely turned down, but it was great to see him on screen. 4. Again, the action sequences carried this movie. 5. Lastly, I felt all the heroes looked great on screen & shared a great dynamic. Looking forward to eventually seeing Black Adam vs Superman. Having a Shazam vs Adam show needs to happen as well, but that character also needs a lot of work.
@@Stinkmeaner420 Someone from WB kidnapped & held my family at ransom until I watched Black Adam at least three times. I had such a good time that I decided to watch for a fourth time since my family said their stay felt like a mini-vacation.
I actually really liked it! I think there is some forced moments, but I enjoyed every character, thought it was funny when it needed to be and heartfelt where it needed to be
I feel the same. The movie was very enjoyable but I felt it missed the landing on emotional impacts that it was aiming for. One big thing I wish they added was maybe 5-10 minutes of back story of justice society. Hawkman and Dr. fate kinda just appeared on screen and you’re supposed to buy into their team dynamic and respect their authority just because of a short conversation with waller. Their characters deserve so much more back story to make you feel invested into them. And Pierce brosnan was chefs kiss casting. Overall a pretty good movie but can’t help but feel it could have been better.
There definitely are problems, biggest of them is the two teenager heroes don't do anything and take away from Hawkman and Dr Fate's relationship with Black Adam. As a fan of the history, I love that Adam Smasher, Osiris, and Isis are in this movie. Along with set up for all of the Black Marvel lore.
@@badman_iiixiii No no, you see Atom Smasher gets injured and gets turned into a robot, Black Adam then brings him to the dark side and gives him the name Adam Smasher, not realizing that implies he smashes Adams. Black Adam isn't to great with English, he is 5 thousand years old.
I have to admit I underestimated The Rock's incredible charisma at one time. I remember regretting having gone to see Jumanji and felt sour for the first 10 minutes but the second he appeared I was entranced. His signature goofy smile is like a warm cup of hot chocolate. I think he has the same appeal that Jackie Chan and Eddie Murphy once brought. It would be nice to see him in better movies but almost all my favourite performances are the ones where he carries the entire film with his larger than life presence.
Funny, he doesn't carry Jumanji at all for me. The real star is Jack Black as Bethany. I do think though, that it's still one of the Rock's better roles. Although mostly because of the opposite of your reason, I think he's fun in a role where he plays a nerdy kid in a brawny body, it's fun to see him contradict his physical traits like that and it's an acting job he can manage. His interactions with Kevin Hart and Karen Gillian are great too.
@@Unherist no one wants *hot* chocolate to be *warm* (first thought was that it was either a subtle play on words or a redundant expression, but either way, it was pretty funny)
Just got back from watching this. It wasn’t bad, but definitely not great. Maybe a C For me, the biggest problem (in addition to the lack of exploration into “heroes don’t kill”) was the overwhelming amounts of narration and exposition. Pervasive in the film, and I think a lot of it wouldn’t be necessary with a couple of added scenes to show us rather than tell us
I was actually really impressed by the final episodes of Dwayne Johnson's show Ballers. Spoilers ahead, but for a show that was the Coors' Light of TV shows, for Dwayne Johnson to make himself the villain of his own series took guts. You didn't have to commit to that and the show would have ended fine. But, he went for it and we finally got to see how bad he's been on everybody else and much happier every character was without him. While most of his films are pretty forgettable, I enjoyed Hobbs & Shaw, and Pain & Gain.
Movie Black Adam lines up overall quite faithfully with his modern comic appearances. Sure there are changes, but it would take hordes of films to go through his complex modern comic stories.
I think part of why I enjoyed this movie as much as I did is that the filmmakers seemed to know that they didn't have a strong enough story to have characters sitting around discussing the plot for ten minutes, or a drawn out night-before-the-battle sequence or a whole bunch of comedic fish-out-of-water scenes when Black Adam first awakens, so they don't do any of that and instead keep their foot on the gas when it comes to the action.
The film should have been set in the late 1940s due to the fact that the JSA are golden age heroes and Black Adam should have just been the true villian of the entire movie not some another redeeming anti hero. This character is suppose to be Shazam's greatest enemy and I think he's suppose to be the main antagonist in the third Shazam film (if it ever happens), so how are DC gonna fix that.
As far as I know, the Rock as no interest in fighting Shazam. He only wants to fight superman. Dragging down the potential tbh. This movie was almost good.
I watched the movie very intoxicated, I loved it. I laughed so hard at the at times weird script and strange scenes and shots, while at the same time thoroughly enjoying the amazing action scenes in the movie
Black Adam is fun alright, but not compelling in story. Its like a character without anything to do but the movie just gives him something to do, not the character gives the movie to do. Its like playing GTA without any story. The end of the film is just Black Adam learns his catchphrase
I like particularly how it showed the difference in how the power was used compared to Shazam. The latter you get a story about a kid getting these amazing powers and being careful not to hurt anyone too bad and enjoy the luxury that he gets to be an adult who lucked out into getting the power compared to someone having no qualms about using his powers in the most vicious ways and seeing just how terrifying the power of Shazam can be when unhinged along with someone who gets it that gets a more traditional strong willed approval to get the power.
Dwayne wants so badly to be the "Superman" of villians for DC that he wouldn't dare let his precious Black Adam lose to SHAZAM. God forbit Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson not be invincible and without challenge in every movie he's in.
@@johnstovall7503 But in Shazam's movie he wouldn't lose. And Johnson is fucking scared of that. He cant stand to be in a movie where HE isnt the one kicking all the ass and never losing.
That's what I'm saying, even Henry Cavill (Superman) became a villain in mission impossible fallout and people loved his performance. He has such a fragile ego he literally has contract that protect his "brand" from being harmed where he can't lose fight that's makes the rock look bad, fast and furious showed us that. I think it more admirable to have a character get put through the ringer and still stand up, that what makes Daredevil, Captain America, Batman, Spider-Man and Invincible so good is that they still won't yield to there villains. But nooo god forbid your character goes through an arc
You have summed up my feelings about this movie perfectly. It is a deeply flawed script, the Rock's performance is decent enough, but it isn't enough to make me anything more than "Eh" about everything else in the movie.
As someone who is having a rough time in life right now, it was nice to watch a movie and escape for 2 hours. Yes, this movie has major flaws. Yes, they sort of messed up Black Adam's origins. And yes it doesn't make any sense in the bigger picture of the universe. Though it was nice to let my brain rot, just to seek some happiness. I really loved Dr. Fate's accurate costume. So satisfying
@@erubin100 agreed, but hey, all we wanted was a semi good story with great action & characters interacting in the universe, the rock actually gave us that unlike other franchises 😔 Paige hope things look up soon!
The way I see it, this is a movie that originally was only about Teth Adam himself, but got all of the Justice society and intergang stuff thrown in because the studio wanted to build up future properties and the writers didn't know how to write a movie just about Adam. His story was very interesting to me. The fact that he was someone who never asked for what he got and lost everything in the process is managed in a way that was very intriguing and challenging to me, especially the way they handle the twist of him not actually being the "chosen one" at all, and the way his people wanted him to be not being at all who he was. I wanted to see THAT movie, I wanted to explore THAT story deeper, but it was only like a third of the whole thing. The justice society stuff was not too bad per se, but it felt completely disconnected to Adam, and it felt like it was only relevant to Adam because the movie says so and no other reason. Like it belonged to a completely separate movie. And because of that, I simply couldn't bring myself to care about them at all. And I personally had a problem with the musical score, not because it was bad or anything, but because it just NEVER STOPPED. Almost the entire movie has music blaring at full volume in the background, and with the already visually packed scenes that it kept putting up, the entire thing ended up being an assault to the senses that diminished even the better parts of the movie. And everything about intergang was so generic and bland that I forgot what the bad guys were called 2 seconds after they stopped saying it. Overall, I was most worried about Dwane Johnson's performance prior to seeing this movie, particularly because he hasn't really shown his acting abilities the way someone like John Cena has. But it turns out he did a great job, and managed to explore all of the character's nuances and conflicts through acting alone much better than even the script could. I just wish we got more of that instead of what we actually got.
Exactlyyy. It honestly felt like Scoob! Bc with that you come for scooby and the gang, but then the whole plot is tryna to shoehorn other hanna babera into it. Or even the mummy 1/2 when there is a whole interesting plot happening, but it's forced into being minimal
I got super annoyed watching both Black Adam and Thor 4 because of just how ungrounded these movies are I can't take anything seriously in these movies because of how badly their written
I'd love to see more of the JSA, in a movie or series, or even just another cameo in a different movie. Maybe with some more of the famous characters like Sandman, or Hourman... or... Flashman
I believe if this was Rock's first break-out role ever, this movie would've been awesome. At the very least it wouldn't be "The Rock has Lightning Fingers: The Movie". It was fine in the end but I just don't like it when the actor has huge influences in the movie's overall production, Tom Cruise Mummy movie being a perfect example.
Did he? There were a billion cuts, and when there weren't, the movie was full of awful slow motion. I'm not a Zack Snyder fan, but if you're chasing that aesthetic you still need to understand how the man uses slo-mo to capture the scene before showing its full impact when the attack lands. It goes s-l-o-w-FASTFASTFAST, instead of this movie which was just slow motion with nothing on the other side.
He was...adequate. The bit where the kid comes back with the empowered townsfolk though was horribly executed. It was meant to be an epic moment but it felt really underwhelming. The action scenes for the whole were great though.
his style is ugly. the editing is horrible. the script is horrible. the writing choices were horrible. he doesnt understand black adam's character and allowed the rock to hijack his production/movie and control everything
Black Adam basically reminds me of the Aquaman movie, a well made movie with some good performances with an extremely clumsy/underwhelming script with really bad dialogue.
Haven’t watched it yet but from what I have heard it sounds like a case of this being more a JSA movie with Black Adam in it rather than the full focus being on Black Adam himself or at least that’s just one of the problems
I'd say it's the exact opposite - the only JSA character that I felt really got fleshed out was Dr. Fate, though Aldis Hodge does an admirable job with what he's given as Hawkman. The bigger problem is again the conflict feeling pretty manufactured between Black Adam and the JSA, and the lack of any real tension. IMO it's escapist entertainment and nothing else, and given the current media landscape, I'll take that
I did honestly like the movie but tbh I’m so tired of super hero movies 😭 and I’m a nerd I’m just a history and sci-fi nerd and there have been so many dang super hero movies in the past 10 years alone Edit: also you are rn for me talking about the good vs evil thing and tension between the characters, for me personally for 100% of the movie I was so extremely annoyed at the supers for trying to stop black atom and saying that he’s evil and locking him away forever so they thought… like 100% was very upset by this the whole time
Honestly this is the epitome of the superhero genre - the biggest actor in the world, lots of action, kind of dumb but in a fun way, scrawny guy turned into a buff CGI guy with a CGI army, “you need a better name” and “you need a catchphrase” tropes, and, most importantly, out-of-place 60s music over what would otherwise be a great introduction for a slave from 2600 BC
@@dani3po dude literally has Jungle Cruise, Black Adam, Rampage, Skyscraper, Jumanji, etc in the past five years. Cruise has done, like, one Top Gun and one M:I. The Rock is the most popular movie star in the world.
*I give black Adam a 7/10, not perfect but STILL FUN AND ENJOYABLE, I agree with your points tho, parts of the film COULDVE been executed better but a fun ride nonetheless* 🙌
Yes, he was showing that he was progressing as an actor, and willing to go there to make the audience feel something. He also showed his range of drama, vulnerability, and comedy in other movies (e.g. Snitch, Faster, The Game Plan, The Rundown, and Southland Tales) where he wasn't some invincible hero. Even in Doom he showed more range than now as an anti-hero/villain.
it's weird that for a movie about an anti-hero it's the dc movie with the most heroic feeling in decades, i'm serious it gave me a feeling similar to the one i had when dc rebirth was at its best.
hes not a fucking hero. ENOUGH WITH THIS VENOM TREATMENT SHIT. hes a self-centered villain who only cares about his own people/country and his own interests
I only had 2 major complaints. 1) Dr Fate was so amazingly done I was pretty bummed out how he kept taking the helmet off at will during the fights, it's the same actor/actress syndrome all the time where they have to be seen instead of who they are portraying and 2) the implication at the end that Superman works for or with Waller, major pissing off they did there. However, to me it looks like they are trying to make a new Superman/Shazam The Return of Black Adam like the animated movie, which was pretty good (in general animated movies from DC are amazing) so we have a second Black Adam to look forward to
This is my take before I finish your video Captain. The problem with Black Adam is that it's mediocre as fuck. And I think people gave this film way too much credit for mediocrity when the superhero genre is already filled to the brim with mediocrity. Sure it's better than Thor Love and Thunder and maybe if you swing it Doctor Strange. But is that really saying much?
I never liked him as an actor since he always does similar roles but he was great in this movie not bc his acting is required to act amazing but his presence makes black adam so great, it the little things that makes this movie great the facial expressions so many little details.
He's a genuinely likable person with enough charisma to carry himself. The problem is that he stops diversifying his role after WWE (notice that he used to play villains super often in the early 2000s)

I actually liked love and thunder… because it was so wildly different. it was sad, which for most, makes it a poor escape… but if you’re not looking for a comedy, the drama’s pulled off pretty well. love and thunder was funny only for the last few minutes… while they set up the story for a possible sequel.
I enjoyed it as a romantic comedy with Thor and Jane I just felt the stuff with gorr the god butcher was really undercut and needed to be a part of a more serious movie
It felt like a sketch comedy. Where they just improvised jokes scene to scene. Some could be funny but the movie just doesnt work as a cohesive unit for me. Laughs were prioritized over plot.
What? Love and Thunder had WAY too much forced comedy in the first third, most of which fell flat. But I thought the dramatic, sad, and sweet parts were really good.
given that in the comics Black Adam, Hawkman and Dr Fate were all friends in ancient Egypt, I think it was a missed opportunity to use that in the movie as well. Adam: Prince Khufu, you've reincarnated again? Lord Nabu, you're found a new host for your power? Hawkman/Fate: Yes, it's been 5,000 years, the world has changed drastically. We don't WANT to fight you, but we will. Let us talk to you, help you adapt to it. Adam: I don't know that I can. You see, you've actually lived through all the time, all those changes, and thus gradually changed yourself alongside it. But for me, all my pain, all my rage, it's still like it was just yesterday.
I kept thinking a lot of stories were combined with this film and not enough time was given for all of them. Atom Smasher and Cyclone were forming a relationship but that never really impacted the story. That came off more to me as filling time. Yeah, Black Adam is killing villains but I thought "Didn't Ben Affleck as Batman also kill villains and use guns?" Batman killing villains was more shocking to me. However, I loved Black Adam's slow-mo scene with "Paint It Black" and his tragic backstory. This film is okay but could've been better.
Sr fate has so much potential. Being someone who is not familiar with that character at all, I think the character is really cool, I like how golden his magic abilities are, I stead of just bright yellow light. I like the voice he speaks when he uses the helmet, i like how clean his entire attire is and it makes sense from the way he fights, where he dont make any physical contact unless it's the illusions. The effect they had when he speaks with the helmet really makes you feel he can be at any place at the same time. I wasnt that disappointed when the character died, buy I was disappointed and also wtf, when that helmet suddenly disappears, because I thought someone is going to pick it up and carry it on. But all in all I actually really enjoyed the movie, mainly because the action scene are really cool. Cyclones ability is just beautiful, dr fates abilities obviously and also a lot of scenes like when BA was just released, the scene where hawkman redirect the lightning with his mace. And I'm not sure what it is, even when he uses his lightning, I mean it's one of those that's been time many times in other superpower scenes in other movies but the way he uses it at the beginning, choking the guy and trying him bone dry, and that chain lightning he makes too. Besides all the great effects I think it also shows a lot of the characters a abilities in just one movie. Which compared to marvel's, their scenes are always so calculated, they limit the ways one character can use their ability, to save it for future projects, youd see 1 character with maybe 1 or 2 ways they use the ability and youd just see them using it over and over.
I think the moral quandary over killing works because of the context it's in. The film doesn't ask if killing itself is okay, it asks if the Justice Society has any right to tell Black Adam and Khandaq they're wrong for killing the mercenaries ruling the country. When Hawkman and Fate get told off by the leading actress that they only got involved in peacekeeping when someone powerful emerged from Khandaq, and not when Khandaq was oppressed, the film gives an answer: foreign powers that never bothered to help don't get a say in the debate.
ok but they should EXPLAIN why the jsa wasnt there to help at least. give us some goddamn context, SOME INFORMATION. i have a hard time believing the jsa wouldnt have helped those in need BUT OK MOVIE
I think a big part of why actual action movies are out of favour with Hollywood audiences now is because of wrestlers becoming a thing. Everybody blames superhero movies for dumbing shit down but I think Fast and the Furious is more to blame. Superhero movies just killed it off. Guys like the Rock spent their entire lives relying on camera tricks to sell it to the audience. I do think this is one of Johnson's better movies. A big part of that is the other characters in the movie. I'm really happy to see Aldis Hodge and Sarah Shahi get cast in a big movie. I didn't expect much from Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate but somehow him just standing there looking the part half the time managed to do it.
I agree about Aldis Hodge he is so good. It sucks that we probably want see him as Hawkman ever again. Aldis Hodge should have been John Stewart or Mister Terrific.

No you're not being too hard on it at all. The movie does the absolute bare minimum.

While I was watching BA, I couldn't help but feel that Shazam needed to be in this. The film could've used the parallels of Adam's son and Billy being the same age and BA could tell Billy how naive he's being about using his powers. Something like that.
Especially since Black Atom is Shazam's arch Nemesis.
@@planescapedAdam Smasher?
They're likely keeping that plotpoint for Shazam 3. I can see Black Adam being defeated because he's able to turn Billy back into a kid, realizing Billy is just like his kid (if not a little modern), and hesitating because he sees himself as harming his son. In this moment of hesitation, Billy yells "shazam!" turning him back into Shazam and Adam into En'Sabanur, Billy/Shazam then using this opportunity to incapacitate him.
Shazam would have been great over that kid that can't act.
I think Black Adam will be in Shazam three (if we get one), the big finale to the trilogy with Shazam’s Nemisis. Plus we wouldn’t have to waste time with a villain origin because he got his own little side project first

Someone pointed out to me that even though The Rock was the first WWE star to make it as a Hollywood actor, he doesn't really have that one iconic role that defines his career.
@@sfkapacheoutlaw5348 he shouldve never been able to kill fate in the first place. that d tier shazam villain could never
I think that this movie had great potential in exploring the ideas of victims vs oppressors (in relation to the King’s reign, Black Adam’s backstory, and modern Candaq), justice vs vengeance (in relation to the JUSTICE Society of America), and good vs evil (in terms of heroes and villains) and how antiheroes blur the line between these ideas and whether they have good reason to.
So it's like I always say:
"It's like 9/11, y'know, FOR THE KIDS."
also they couldve made it like the comics where nabu, hawkman, and black adam knew eachother thousands of years ago. it wouldve made their interactions with him more worthwhile and special

Black adam was dogshit
Seriously though, I agree with most of this. I think some of Fate and Hawkman's scenes were done a disservice by their costumes being a little too much, but that's a personal taste thing. Big agree on Atom's costume, when they said he borrowed his uncles suit I wanted some campy, colorful, old school comics shit. I guess that would look pretty out of place, though.

That isn't the problem. The problem is that even though he kills, he only kills usless goons that probably deserve it. There is no point in the film where they hint at him being evil. the movie was too short imo. it was missing another 30 minutes to an hour
Dude your first 1minute and 11s of the video is word for word... exactly how I feel about Dwayne Johnson.
That's so true and many including me like it this way to most extent.... Unlike that pathetic Marvel that has become....
1:02 exactly it's his ego trying to constantly portray himself as a big strong guy all the time
The film should have been set in the late 1940s due to the fact that the JSA are golden age heroes and Black Adam should have just been the true villian of the entire movie not some another redeeming anti hero.
This is really a feel-good movie it isn't winning any awards but it was a good movie.
Definitely not a good movie but it is fun for the first half
I watched the movie very intoxicated, I loved it. I laughed so hard at the at times weird script and strange scenes and shots, while at the same time thoroughly enjoying the amazing action scenes in the movie
Weird hearing someone refer to the actor as just "Johnson". I'm so used to everyone calling him "The Rock" lol
It felt like a “The rock” super hero movie . Black Adam not so much
Black Adam was a fun movie compared to recent Marvel disappointment.
disagree! I fell asleep watching black adam actually
Definitely, this movie was more fun to watch than Black Panther 2. The only recent MCU film that tops it is Spider Man No Way Home.
The problem was sure his powers were cool but the movie falls off in so many spots, and that kid is fucking annoying
@@dadeee7776 For the record, that's really all I'm giving much credit to aside from Dr Fate . I'm not defending anything else.
Johnson wants to be a anti-Superman so bad, they made his own “Kryptonite.”
Dwayne wants so badly to be the "Superman" of villians for DC that he wouldn't dare let his precious Black Adam lose to SHAZAM. God forbit Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson not be invincible and without challenge in every movie he's in.
To be fair, Black Adam was always able to defeat Captain marvel in anything resembling a fair fight.
Noah centineo doing his best Tom Holland impression
His character didn't contribute anything substantial at all to the movie
As someone who doesn't even know Noah Centineo is, I thought it was the actor who played Joe on Blues Clues. Haha
He felt like a mixture between Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland. And he sounded a bit like Ryan Reynolds at times.
tom holland owns a character archetype/personality now ? ?? shut the fuck up
rookie superhero who doesnt know what hes doing belongs to tom holland now everybody. you mcu stans are so obnoxious and entitled
Isn't it sad that "just okay" is the gold standard now?
@@erubin100 agreed, but hey, all we wanted was a semi good story with great action & characters interacting in the universe, the rock actually gave us that unlike other franchises 😔
Paige hope things look up soon!
@@tombucannon the story was trash
@@tombucannon Hey thanks, and I hope so too.
I'd rather get stoned and watch Fraggle Rock when having a rough time personally. XD
Great analysis.
I liked the film but nevertheless spot on!
Lastly I want a Hawkman and Fate solo film, they help make the film.
I loved this movie. I don't care what others tell me, its amazing
Yeahhhhh there’s just no pleasing these people sometimes…. Unless you have quips every 4.5 mins.
@@Prospective_of_Jay that’s the opposite of what people want lol
Amazing? Ehhh nah buddy
I got super annoyed watching both Black Adam and Thor 4 because of just how ungrounded these movies are I can't take anything seriously in these movies because of how badly their written
@@Prospective_of_Jay dude this movie had constant bad jokes
I'd love to see more of the JSA, in a movie or series, or even just another cameo in a different movie. Maybe with some more of the famous characters like Sandman, or Hourman... or... Flashman
I believe if this was Rock's first break-out role ever, this movie would've been awesome. At the very least it wouldn't be "The Rock has Lightning Fingers: The Movie". It was fine in the end but I just don't like it when the actor has huge influences in the movie's overall production, Tom Cruise Mummy movie being a perfect example.
Jaume Collet-Serra still did a great job as a director
No he didn't. Man's got no style. There's more of The Rock's flavor than his.
If they direct a dragon ball movie, they should get him
IMO it's escapist entertainment and nothing else, and given the current media landscape, I'll take that
That's exactly the issue
The movie was a breath of fresh air. Entertaining. Rather than a message bloated mess.
I absolutely agree with you. Its his choice of script and story.
Not seen it, but even if Peacemaker is only semi-canon, how the hell does Amanda Waller still have a job?
I did honestly like the movie but tbh I’m so tired of super hero movies 😭 and I’m a nerd I’m just a history and sci-fi nerd and there have been so many dang super hero movies in the past 10 years alone
Edit: also you are rn for me talking about the good vs evil thing and tension between the characters, for me personally for 100% of the movie I was so extremely annoyed at the supers for trying to stop black atom and saying that he’s evil and locking him away forever so they thought… like 100% was very upset by this the whole time
It definitely got rather clique at times .
The biggest actor in the world is Tom Cruise.
@@dani3po nah, Tom Cruise can’t open a blockbuster outside of Top Gun or M:I
@@michaelcubed That's more than DJ can.

I think his best work IMO was Gridiron Gang it was earlier in his career I wish he go back to roles like that.
That movie had great emotional moments
Yes, he was showing that he was progressing as an actor, and willing to go there to make the audience feel something. He also showed his range of drama, vulnerability, and comedy in other movies (e.g. Snitch, Faster, The Game Plan, The Rundown, and Southland Tales) where he wasn't some invincible hero. Even in Doom he showed more range than now as an anti-hero/villain.
it's weird that for a movie about an anti-hero it's the dc movie with the most heroic feeling in decades, i'm serious it gave me a feeling similar to the one i had when dc rebirth was at its best.
He's a hero for Kandaq and nothing else
hes not a fucking hero. ENOUGH WITH THIS VENOM TREATMENT SHIT. hes a self-centered villain who only cares about his own people/country and his own interests
The standouts for this movie was Aldis Hodge Hawkman and Brosnans Dr Fate. But the movie was good but not excellent.
At least he didn't say can you Smell what Black Adam's cooking in the movie 😅😅😅
I only had 2 major complaints. 1) Dr Fate was so amazingly done I was pretty bummed out how he kept taking the helmet off at will during the fights, it's the same actor/actress syndrome all the time where they have to be seen instead of who they are portraying and 2) the implication at the end that Superman works for or with Waller, major pissing off they did there.
However, to me it looks like they are trying to make a new Superman/Shazam The Return of Black Adam like the animated movie, which was pretty good (in general animated movies from DC are amazing) so we have a second Black Adam to look forward to
is it a plot hole Black Adam doesn't have a accent but everyone else does?
Yes
This is my take before I finish your video Captain.
The problem with Black Adam is that it's mediocre as fuck. And I think people gave this film way too much credit for mediocrity when the superhero genre is already filled to the brim with mediocrity.
Sure it's better than Thor Love and Thunder and maybe if you swing it Doctor Strange. But is that really saying much?
The cast were new so ofcourse It was “Rightfully “ mediocre. Also this Is a start for DC to start making live action DC movies.
@@friendlyfire2374 What the hell is rightfully mediocre? These aren't new actors
Yea i dont get the rock love, he’s literally himself in every role
People love the rock ig
i cant stand him. hes so fake and his acting is terrible
DJ was AMAZING in Be Cool. That and Southland mark him as a genuinely talented actor in my book. I just wish i could have seen him coming up hungry as an actor rather than having begun acting as a celebrity
Soooo when is Pierce Brosnan getting his own movie.
Need more of him in Hollywood these days
'The Matador,' 'Dante's Peake,' 'Robinson Crusoe,' 'After the Sunset,' 'The Thomas Crown Affair,' 'Seraphim Falls,' 'Live Wire,' 'The Tailor of Panama,' 'The November Man,' 4 James Bond entries and 'The Son' is also a really underrated TV series if you haven't seen it yet.
Well, I'm glad it wasn't at least A Trainwreck
@@dericplummer9272 the plot in LaT was honestly better than the plot in Black Adam
What? Love and Thunder had WAY too much forced comedy in the first third, most of which fell flat. But I thought the dramatic, sad, and sweet parts were really good.
It still sucks
I loved Black Adam so much, I couldn't believe how much hate it got when it first came out
Same 😢
The entire movie experience was worth it for the one line: "Catchphrase first, kill second."
Dr Fate was one of my favorite characters in the injustice comics and he was pretty good in this movie as well
Bummer they killed him off :/
Daredevil and Punisher in the netflix series would be a perfect example.
given that in the comics Black Adam, Hawkman and Dr Fate were all friends in ancient Egypt, I think it was a missed opportunity to use that in the movie as well.
But for me, all my pain, all my rage, it's still like it was just yesterday.
exactly
I do feel like the script, held him back a little bit. But I kept catching myself having fun and enjoying the movie never did that with Thor.
Thor was just so boring
I kept thinking a lot of stories were combined with this film and not enough time was given for all of them. Atom Smasher and Cyclone were forming a relationship but that never really impacted the story. That came off more to me as filling time. Yeah, Black Adam is killing villains but I thought "Didn't Ben Affleck as Batman also kill villains and use guns?" Batman killing villains was more shocking to me. However, I loved Black Adam's slow-mo scene with "Paint It Black" and his tragic backstory. This film is okay but could've been better.
black adam is if you combine the terminator and homelander
Since I'm not even close to being as demanding as you are, I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy this flick... Thanks!
I still had a better time watching this movie than THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
Low bar. Comparing something to trash doesn’t make it good.
Love and Thunder was fine, as long as you knew it was about Thor and Jane, not Gorr.
I hope instead of black Adam vs superman, its actually a team up of Shazam and superman vs black Adam because thats how it should be
Pain and gain was a great character for Dwayne.
When it comes to acting badass and dominant, Dwayne can make anything look like that, he was the perfect choice for this role
It just felt like the rock played himself in another movie AGAIN
Killing off Fate was easily my least favourite part of this movie, one of my most loved CB characters
I will admit that Black Adam isn’t a 10/10 movie but so far this is currently the best Superhero project that’s out right now.
