I think its VERY important to acknowledge that sign languages were not simply invented. They developed among deaf communities, often within deaf schools, and were the formalized. So it makes sense for different geographical locations to have different forms of sign language.
I think they pre-date much more than has been documented. Indigenous people have been using them within entire communities, not just for deaf and/or hearing impaired, but with specific communicative intent.
I recently got attacked by my house cat and it was a terrifying, heartbreaking experience. There was a stray lurking outside our home stressing him out and he’s now struggling with redirected aggression. I never thought my sweet little gooby would ever do this, but such is life. We’re working through it with our vet. Luckily I did not need stitches, but I do have scratches and bites all over my hands/arms. The bites hurt very bad, I can’t imagine being bit by a medium/large dog.
Conan O'Brien has a thing on his podcast where if someone sees him in public that watches the podcast, they say a little secret phrase to tell him that they watch the show. For instance when they see him they would just walk up to him or shout from afar, "There was talk of gerbils" , and I think that for ear biscuits the secret phrase should be "you honor, i told him it was genuine leather" lol
I do love there was talk of gerbils! I kinda miss Kedakai as god made her though! I can’t not hear the gerbils line in Mickey Rooney’s voice though! It’s so good.
Another common misconception: "hearing impaired" is actually not generally the preferred term. "Deaf or deaf or hard of hearing" are the preferred terms. As a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing that works closely with D/deaf and hard of hearing students.
I was mauled by a friends pitbull in high school, bit my face and back of my leg a few times. When I informed the owners they took the dog upstairs and beat it with a golf club. The owner of the dog then made me walk half a mile home (with my hamstring open). The family of the dog then tried to sue me for trespassing and "doing something to provoke the dog". I had proof of the invitation to their house from them (a place I had been before, as well as a dog i had met many times), I also had a good friend with me when it happened and thankfully took my side as a witness. in the end we went to court 8 times, I won the case. They had to surrender their dog because I was actually the third person this dog had attacked and the final straw. LESSON: Choose your friends wisely, and always be weary of any dog (ones you know and ones you don't) they are unpredictable. Now I actually work with dogs and have been able to move past the situation. Sadly the owners of the surrendered dog have purchased another...
I really wish they would teach sign language right along with your regular reading and writing because for one thing there's sooo many situations where you need to communicate with someone that either can't hear you due to noise or because you're trying to be quiet but you can clearly see them. Secondly loss of hearing is such a common thing especially with age that it would be helpful with that as well. Not to mention it would be nice to be able to include deaf and dumb people in every day life without even having to learn something special. Oh well it's a nice thought.
Both my sons got bit by dogs and have thick scars. First one was a husky and he tore up my kids shoulder. Went on to bite another person in the butt. The owner ended up moving and leaving the dog in her old apt. Other dog was a Pitt mix and she just didn’t like bike wheels. 😹
LOVE that sign language got talked about! There’s actually 300+ signed languages in the world! I’ve been around the Deaf community my whole life so this is a near and dear topic to me. One thing I’d like to add is that the term “hearing impaired” isn’t used anymore as much of the community feels it’s a negative term (many would even say offensive) that doesn’t account for the pride found within Deaf culture. So instead just saying Deaf and hard of hearing is preferred🤟🏼🤟🏼
Funny I never knew it was considered offensive to some. I've always told people I'm hearing impaired or hard of hearing and haven't given it a second thought.
I have a theory on the sugar-sleep phenomenon! Carbohydrates are essential to produce serotonin(the happy chemical), which is then converted to melatonin(the sleep hormone), so the sugar is potentially being utilised to make more melatonin to help you sleep. Either that or you're getting a blood sugar spike and then drop, and the drop is making you feel fatigued.
When I was 5, I got attacked by my friend's Rottweiler. I was at his house (a few houses down from mine) and apparently I got tripped up in his chain and he started attacking. My sister was there and was trying to pull me away from the dog, but he wouldn't let go until my friend's mom came out and started screaming at the dog. I ended up having scars on my left cheek, just under my left eyebrow (almost lost my eye), my left ear looks deformed, and I've got scars all over the left side of my head above/behind my ear. My mom still won't let me see the pictures that were taken from the accident and it's been over 10 years lol!
If anyone has a fear of dogs or just of getting bit I highly recommend taking some time to read up on canine body language. The great majority of bites can be easily avoided by noticing the very slight signals dogs give us (lip licking, stiffened body, hard stare, etc)
yupp i’ve been fostering rescues from abuse cases for 20 years now (probably been thru hundreds of dogs) and have never been bitten. i learned their language and know exactly what they’re telling me and when to give them space. only been bitten by a dog with severe neurological issues who didn’t show body language because his own brain didn’t even know what he was going to do next
This is good advice for all animals. People who complain that a cat will bite or scratch you out of nowhere - they're actually pretty good about letting you know. If you're petting them, and they seem tight and their tail starts swishing, they're trying to say, "Stop touching me." If their ears go back, you've got 1 second to stop.
I really do agree if you’re paying attention, as you really should be around any dogs, you can prevent most bites But the lady with the dog on the retractable leash …
I’d like to say that I work as an Uber, and we don’t get to see who has tipped until after we have rated our passenger. So, if you wanna have your tip considered, please tip in cash, otherwise I will be rating you assuming you didn’t tip. More than half of the people that say they are going to tip, won’t.
Personal experience with dog bites: First off I grew up with dogs that was family pets but also had the purpose of being a auto repair guard dog, I know how to react to an aggressive dog and don't approach a dog I don't know without being on guard and have contact with the owner first, I dont fear dogs and I'm not afraid of fighting a dog and know I can over power a large dog and enter a stalemate (not without injury tho) Now with that information I was once bitten 3 times by a single dog on both arms with puncture wounds I was doing a delivery at work and got to a farm with no people around, a single dog was there but this was a happy friendly dog that was just excited to see someone, it sat down and waited for me to say hi and it then laid down expecting belly rubs, I just got the package and knocked on the door, no one answered but a second dog became very angry, so I placed the box, took a picture and walked back to the car, halfway to the car the door opened up into the house, the dog had jumped up and got the door open, I just turned around and saw a hunting dog lunge at me, bit my right arm twice and the 3rd bit was my left hand as I just grabbed the dog's jaw with the left hand and grabed it's head with my right, then I just lifted the dog by its head and hugged it so I had control of where and what it was doing, walked to the car with the dog in my arms flailing like crazy, it never let go of my hand, once I got to the car I got ready to throw the dog and when it loosened it's grip on my hand I just threw it as far as I could and jumped into the car and called for help, I couldn't drive the car myself, when help came I had to get the car rolling out of the property to a safe spot where I could get help in a safe environment and was driven to the hospital, it's teeth had luckily not done serious permanent damage to my hands, just scraped the bone in my hand
I got bit by a dog that I asked the owner to take inside but they weren't home and they told me over text it was friendly, as an Amazon delivery driver. We're not supposed to deliver with a dog unleashed or at the very least unattended. Just a heads up if you leave your dog unattended and the delivery driver doesn't deliver it's entirely on you, also you know, we have like 30 seconds a stop so expecting someone to go through the app just to find your number already puts them behind, let alone calling or texting and waiting for a response. That owner also can never receive packages to their house so if you're completely self-conceited and don't care about people getting bit there's that on top of it.
There was a rooftop bar I used to go to years ago (closed now) and he bats seemed to love that place at night. There was an indoor area for the cautious but the band played outside and even with all the vibrations from the music the bats still loved the place.
Maybe rhett's not eating enough or enough carbs? Only reason I say that is because I remember going through something similar where I noticed I wasn't eating enough, especially carbs, and would ALWAYS wake up at 3-4 am and not know why. Then, once I realized I wasn't eating enough and just ate more food and carbs, I was sleeping like a rock.
Tht insurance adjustment thing is true. My buddy got his license and I was like “can’t you just go to the highest priced places to get your quotes?” And he told me that they really can’t do that without getting fired and other things. That you have to use many different places or the auditors will get you.
If we apply the same "this was a missed opportunity to have a universal language" to spoken languages, we ought to all be speaking Esperanto or some similar artificially constructed language. But that's just not how languages work.
My mom had an Akita growing up named Mowgli. One day my mom and my grandma were outside in the the front garden and a friend of my grandmas came up and they were talking and laughing and he grabbed my grandma lightheartedly, very friendly and the dog got very upset and attacked him. My mom said that that was the sweetest dog they’d ever had and they never saw it coming, they had to put Mowgli down (idk how to feel abt that) but it was very sad.
As a construction worker I can tell you that it is indeed fun. Sometimes. Demo is a blast and the harder something is the greater the sense of accomplishment is. I'm into power lifting and I think picking up heavy things is fun so it fits my personality but it's not for everyone.
My dad taught me to be very smooth with breaking and starting due to my mom getting car sick easily. It backfired when my driving instructor got annoyed that he couldn't feel a jerk and therefore didn't know if I was fully stopped. :( Well at least he's been the only one upset about it. :D
British sign language also have so many variations- makaton, signalong and BSL all use different signs but are commonly used in Britain to communicate with hearing impaired and people with communication difficulties (I teach special needs children and was mind blown finding all of this out)
as an english speaker, learning asl is kinda tricky in terms of grammar too, and its even more tricky when you're taught by an older deaf person for a year, and then a younger deaf person the next year. signs can go out of date apparently?? i learned two different ways to sign 16-19 lols. dont even get me started on the difference between asl pse and see. super fun to learn tho ngl
So I have ADHD and sugar always helps me sleep and less caffeine unless I already feel awake but I also do cbd gummies and I sometimes I feel crappy or so awake
I was bitten in the face by a dog when I was a kid! The doctor said I was lucky it barely missed my eye. I have a pretty large scar on one side of my face. Most of the time I forget it’s there until I look in a mirror. I still love dogs, though.
I work in the water restoration business. I had a job similar to yours, fancy wood floor was completely soaked, insurance told us to use a floor mat suction system to try to dry the floor, tented it, set dehumidifiers and air movement and the floor wouldn’t dry. Ultimately we had to take it out and replace it. If all you paid was your deductible then you made out like a bandit, aside from the restoration company they sent ins cost, that equipment is very expensive to rent and replacing the floor is insanely expensive. His deductible was 2500 and our final bill to the insurance company was 14,000. Don’t worry. Just don’t let your house flood again 😂
The documentary Link is talking about is “The Greatest Night in Pop” while there is a completely separate documentary called “We Are One” which is also on Netflix. 😄
I worked in a big box pet store when I was in college. People will just let their dogs bite people and say nothing about it. I think a lot of them are afraid/aware that if they acknowledge the bite it will escalate the issue to you pursuing them for damages. It's easier for them to say nothing and run away before you can piece together what happened. I had a lady who let her large dog corner me in the register box and bite me right on the arm while I was trying to bag her purchase. She was looking right at me when it happened. I looked right at her, seeking acknowledgement. She said nothing (to me or the dog), grabbed her bag, and left.
I have the exact same type of fear as Rhett but not because of Heather Dinklage. Back in the 80s there were a bunch of bats swooping around my grandma's house and one got caught in my brother's hair.
I know this is a bit of an old episode so they probably wont see this- BUT! Instead of sugar, trying warm milk and honey before bed can help! Both milk and honey contain a good amount of tryptophan, the thing that’s also in turkey and why you feel sleepy after eating it.
I really dislike the misconception that you die instantly if a hornet stings you, yes there have been incidences where people died from their sting but there have been people dying of bee stings as well. It only hurts more because they're stinger is larger and poison a little more venomous but really not all that different from wasps and bees. Oh and the one about magpies stealing shiny objects, they're actually afraid of them.
Rhett scary!?!?HA! I say HA! I'd give anything to see this most gorgeous man I've ever seen in the last 5-6 yrs!!! 💗 I don't even care about my 4ft height!!
Some years ago my old neighbor who im semi friendly with was walking down our street with her dog (a big yellow lab) and her new boyfriend who I'd never met. I waved hi to them and she called me over to meet the new boyfriend, so I walked over to shake the man's hand and her dog CHOMPED down onto my right arm. It happened so fast and my adrenaline must've been going because I don't even remember how long it was latched on or what made the dog finally let go but when it did my arm was gruesome looking, muscle and stuff exposed in places. Had to go straight to the doctor and get quite a few stitches. I didn't want to make a big deal about it because the owner was mortified and apologetic. She even gave me like 2 or 3 hundred dollars and a giftcard to some restaurant most likely so I wouldn't sue her lol. I didn't want anything bad to happen to her dog because of the incident but afterwards I was always worried that the dog would bite someone else, maybe worse next time. I hope that hasn't happened. I think you always take a risk being around any animal, but it's the owners responsibility, especially when they have a large dog that can do a lot of damage, to train their dog well or at the very least have good control over their dog when out in public. I've always had dogs myself and big ones, and I'm passionate about animals. Which is why you gotta make sure they act right in public or else keep them away from other people, because if they hurt someone you gotta deal with whatever consequences come from that
I also got bit on the ace by a GSD. Was tied to a phone booth with rope outside a convenience store. Didn't engage but as soon as I walked out the door, the top broke, I ate sh*t on the pavement and had a big purple bite mark on my cheek for weeks. Owner blamed me. Girl I am seven just buying smokes with a note for my Mum. Gtfo.
I've always been terrified of dogs, got a big bruise from one as a kid. I think there are "beware of dog" signs for a reason. ~_~ (no one has "beware of cat" signs unless as a joke...)
I think we all take dogs for granted. You gotta learn dog behavior. Smaller dogs are especially unpredictable because owners often neglect discipline because they are “harmless”. I was bit by a tiny lap poodle. Not fun. I was also attacked by a medium sized dog who had neurological issues, we had to put him down sadly. Wasn’t behavioral at all. I’d say usually you can tell because dogs will give signs. Look up the difference between fearfully laying down and wanting belly rubs. Similar looking- but different. One could grant you cuddles, one could grant you a bite.
My parent’s have a mutual friend who had a dog who ripped their arm off. The dude’s neighbour was suppose to feed his dog and didn’t for two weeks. Guy comes home from holiday and the dog tore his arm off. Obviously the dog had to be put down but yeah, dogs are no joke.
Hard disagree on the parking officer thing. I live next to a university and they will sit and ticket people ONLY where its mostly students (ie greek row, student apartment buildings, Etc.)
That bat probably wasn't trying to get in, but trying to get up. It can't fly away like a bird does from the ground. It needs hight. So if you do see something like that bat, DONT TOUCH IT! Call your local wildlife centre for advice!!!! It was probably looking all over to find a way up. Cos us humans build concrete walls, that they can not hold on to. So they go moving on the floor to find a way up. Maybe it wound something near that door that it could finally get a hold of to get up.
ASL is a language. You wouldn't be surprised that languages are different. Even American English is different in different areas. Sign languages are languages. Japanese and English spoken languages are different for the same reasons that sign languages are different. They are different languages. Literally, that simple. Asl isn't a version of American English, it's its own language that is signed in the US.
The last conversation about insurance might not have landed that well. Too soon after Hannah Guttierez trial regarding the death of Halyna Hutchins because of an involuntary manslaugther. I am pretty sure they didn't know, so I am just providing some information.
my brother got chased by my neighbor’s blue heeler for a mile (that same dog attacked ours too) and when confronted about it my neighbor said we could shoot it next time 🧍🏼♀️
Animals are animals. Including people. Always be cautious around dogs ESPECIALLY in their home environments where they're territorial. I don't care if the owner says the dog is friendly or not. If you don't have a personal relationship with the dog, beware. You just never know. And dog bites are full of nasty bacteria. You do not want a puncture wound from a dog. Unless you feel like a full round of anti-biotics, yo.
Toads are frogs but frogs aren't toads. Dolphins are whales but whales aren't dolphins. Terrapins and tortoises are turtles but turtles are not tortoises or terrapins. If it helps think about how the word deer actually describes multiple species like moose, elk, and white tail. Deer doesn't describe just white tail or mule. It's not a perfect analogy.
Cute little silver tipped wings poking out of Link’s hat.
This podcast is such a comfort for me. I hope they continue on with it for a long time

My dad taught me to be very smooth with breaking and starting due to my mom getting car sick easily. It backfired when my driving instructor got annoyed that he couldn't feel a jerk and therefore didn't know if I was fully stopped. :( Well at least he's been the only one upset about it. :D
parking cops piss me off because i can imagine the kind of person that would choose to be a parking cop 💀
Jenna: “I got bit by a dog recently” proceeds to tell a story from multiple years ago lol
Go off about regulations being necessary and life-saving, Rhett!
Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle....now unsee it 🤣🤣🤣
You have to invite a bat in, right? Or is that a vampire?
"You're lying"
"aha.... yeah I am..."
lmao what xD
They say if you wake up around 4am to need more protein in the evening
Alternate title: Link Reads A Reddit Page And Rhett Becomes A Shell Of A Man
100% Rhett did not know bats were blind. You can see it in his face and watch the mischief part take over and the bs started flowing.
People who don’t responsibility for their dog justttttt grind my gears.
I'm not surprised by links responses he's like a child
Rhett scary!?!?HA! I say HA! I'd give anything to see this most gorgeous man I've ever seen in the last 5-6 yrs!!! 💗 I don't even care about my 4ft height!!
As a UPS driver of 23 years, I've been bit at least 20 times, to varying degrees. 😅
Which is why you gotta make sure they act right in public or else keep them away from other people, because if they hurt someone you gotta deal with whatever consequences come from that
Mmmm biscuit but for ear... mmmm ear biscuits. Nom Nom
My boys!
I fall asleep to the podcast whenever I can’t sleep
I think we all take dogs for granted. You gotta learn dog behavior. Smaller dogs are especially unpredictable because owners often neglect discipline because they are “harmless”. I was bit by a tiny lap poodle. Not fun. I was also attacked by a medium sized dog who had neurological issues, we had to put him down sadly. Wasn’t behavioral at all. I’d say usually you can tell because dogs will give signs. Look up the difference between fearfully laying down and wanting belly rubs. Similar looking- but different. One could grant you cuddles, one could grant you a bite.
Me n rhett r 1 hahah I use 2 use lollies to sleep u gotta time it so u get the high like 30 before u wanna be asleep than crash 😂 love u guys 💙💙💙
I'm a dog groomer I gotta save this for later.
Why did the vids title and thumbnail changed for like a day and then changed back?
RE Sleep: Your gettting old, after 45 you never sleep the same again. Sad but true.
I like how we found out that besides the word Wolf, Rhett can't prenounce Dolphin either
I had a bat swoop down at me while walking to my car after work. I don't think I've even run so fast.
Yeah but what was Jenna wearing when the dog bit her?? Was she "asking for it" wearing those trendy new dogbone flavored pants?? Hmmm???...lol
Feeling sleepy due to sugar can be because your blood glucose is spiked, and then you come down from the carb high and feel sleepy.
What Jacket is Rhett wearing??? Gotta have it
My Chihuahua doesn't bite but she does scratch and shake when she doesn't know anyone or isn't used to them
Sugar helps you sleep Rhett? Ray peat vindicated again. To be truly peaty eat whole milk homemade Icecream before bed.
The last conversation about insurance might not have landed that well. Too soon after Hannah Guttierez trial regarding the death of Halyna Hutchins because of an involuntary manslaugther. I am pretty sure they didn't know, so I am just providing some information.
58:40 take out the word floors😮😮😮
I can’t stop hearing good things about this documentary. I might get Netflix for a month just to see.
What?
Maybe I didn't get to that time stamp yet 😅
@@xoRaQxo I forgot to reply sorry. I’m guessing you made it? It was links recommendation.
@@anandabricker3396 I did. Thanks though!
“BLIND PEOPLE HAVE EYES TOO, RHETT!”
my brother got chased by my neighbor’s blue heeler for a mile (that same dog attacked ours too) and when confronted about it my neighbor said we could shoot it next time 🧍🏼♀️
I got bit by a dog. It was a minor bite and had a few scratches.
I dumped a packet of hot cocoa into my jar of peanut butter last night and ate it with a gold tea spoon
What a great time to be alive ❤ I love everything about this comment especially the gold tea spoon 🤩
If Rhett gets murdered any time soon people are gonna have a lot of questions for Link lol
The diddy comment😂
Animals are animals. Including people. Always be cautious around dogs ESPECIALLY in their home environments where they're territorial. I don't care if the owner says the dog is friendly or not. If you don't have a personal relationship with the dog, beware. You just never know. And dog bites are full of nasty bacteria. You do not want a puncture wound from a dog. Unless you feel like a full round of anti-biotics, yo.
DAW-FIN 🐬 -Rhett
Toads are frogs but frogs aren't toads. Dolphins are whales but whales aren't dolphins. Terrapins and tortoises are turtles but turtles are not tortoises or terrapins. If it helps think about how the word deer actually describes multiple species like moose, elk, and white tail. Deer doesn't describe just white tail or mule. It's not a perfect analogy.
But are all fish fish?
I’ll check back soon to confirm the response 😜
@@curiousrooster Well yes. Like sharks are fish, but fish aren't sharks.
I like that Link's hat says Pepsi free because I am boycotting Pepsi, which is hard.
Pepsi Free is actually a reference to the old can of caffeine free pepsi
@@crazyinnocentturtle oh. Lol
