I live a 10min walk behind Preston beach. Though the fish aren't big it can be very hectic there on a big evening tide at this time of year. I don't get to fish Chesil much as my knees don't like the return journey back up the beach. Maybe when my eldest son can help me with my gear I get to give it a bash. Great video, keep them coming.
I caught my first Gilthead there and have had some very good sessions catching plenty of decent sized bass at Preston beach. After a few days on Chesil, my knees and ankles used to swell up and I had to take a break when I used to come down for a whole week. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

The mackerel situation isn’t actually as bad as most people think. Now I’m talking about kent and Sussex: July and August we had winds blowing from every direction and no period of settled, consistent weather. The water inshore never really cleared, and when it did it was only for a day or two at a time. There’s no point for a mackerel (a sight feeder) to come inshore if it cannot hunt and eat. But when fishing mid channel wrecks, sandbanks and the french coast, we couldn’t get turbot baits passed them. There was so many about (on many different occasions), that they’d take a bait on a 10oz lead on the drop. Wrecking with paternoster rigs (for bream) was near to useless because of the amount of mackerel and scad in the clear water on the wrecks. But now (again, kent and Sussex), we’ve had a few weeks or settled weather, calm clearish water, and everyone and there mums are catching mackerel from the shore.

I’m going on the very fact that, from chesil and the inshore water around Weymouth and Portland, the mackerel have been getting increasingly fewer and further between for the last few years (compared with my memories of fishing over the years), any of the regular chesil anglers and charter skippers will agree. I fished plenty of those calm, humid evenings where you used to almost guarantee catching at least a few mackerel- they were non existent for the majority of them. And the boats consistently struggled to find them for bait. I’m definitely open to the idea that maybe their habits are changing, perhaps their numbers may still be as healthy as ever but they just don’t come inshore like they used to. There could be loads of factors involved. Whatever it is, something has changed and we don’t get them like we used to. Never know, next year might be the opposite!
Amazing footage as always! I fished there a few days ago, only managed one bream though. Had a number of pout and a large mackerel which took the bait on the drop. Ragworm didn't work fore either, the bream I had was on frozen black tipped with squid. Keep the great content coming!
Grip leads when there is a strong tidal pull - a lot of the time they are not needed. Long rods help here, due to the high chance of being 'shingled' - 4oz bass rods should still be OK under normal conditions, as long as you can keep them raised high.
Really looking forward to this. I don't know if there are bream in my locality I know that gilthead bream have been caught around the coast. Is squid a good bait for bream? My days of digging lug/ rag are over and it's not possible to buy any. I have peelers, sandeel, razor fish, mackerel and squid all frozen. I doubt that I will be fishing anytime soon but there's always next year. Thank you so much for this Michael.
Giltheads fight much harder than black bream - I've caught them from Preston beach, but not off Chesil. Bream love squid, but normally you get more bites with ragworm tipped with squid. Hope you can get out soon Jerry.
Hello I hope you might help. We live in the north east and booked to come to chesil 6 months ago. It’s quickly came around and we start the 6h30minute drive on Monday. Unfortunately I think it’s giving S/W all this coming week. Roughly 15mph gusting 20-30 at different times. Do you have location tips? We’re only there for ; days many thanks
Sounds ideal for Abbotsbury and codling, if you can catch it right and can hold bottom. If Chesil is too windy to fish, try Preston beach, Furzy cliff end - wrasse and bass casting to the reef; if you fish the Lodmoor end, just before the reef starts, you can catch a variety of species at distance and I've caught gilthead bream just infront of the beach car park before. There is always the Stone Pier to fish for mini species and mackerel / garfish on float fished sandeel and you can also jig for squid there.
Well done. It was unusual with no mackerel show up. I went to Chesil twice but not successful sessions, the first one was completely black and the second was just dogfish and congers. Do you think there would still bream at Chesil during October month?
You'll catch dogfish at night practically anywhere along Chesil, and Abbotsbury seems to hold more congers than most Chesil venues. Yes, there are some bream still around in October, but September seems better and for triggerfish.
Hi Mick. Excellent video and very informative as usual. I have caught black bream off a boat but never off the beach. I have also never fished from Chesil although I would like to one day. Perhaps I can kill two birds with one stone and catch black bream from Chesil beach although it's a long way from Essex so I might have to arrange a short holiday in the area. Thanks again Ken - its a great area to holiday in and you can catch bream throughout the deeper, eastern end i.e. from Abbotsbury to Chesil Cove and from Portland marks. Its a challenge to hit the bites, but the fight from a decent one is worthwhile and if you hook a triggerfish instead you'll know about it!
I also dropped a crab line with a hook off Portland Bill when I was about 12. I caught flat fish. I did this over and over and my aunt who owned the cafes at the Bill cooked them and served them to her clients...hahahaha. Anyone can remember the Royal Manor and the Cosy Cafe. I was stunned when returned to Portland to visit a relative to find that the Lobster pit cafe did NOT serve lobster....I saw so many lobsters and crabs taken out of the boats that I cant believe the 'Lobster Pot' Did NOT sell Lobster.
Nice try but it just ain't what it use to be these days, it was only 15 years ago we used to catch 2lb plus black bream on Selsey bill point using size one hooks with squid and a plain lead for movement, the biggest i saw was 3.5 lb and it snapped the 10lb snood on the shingle, the bites were real hard pull downs rattling the rod rest on the flat hard shingle over low tide, will it come back? I like to think so but doubt it!
Yes - its much harder now to catch decent sized fish. If you specimen fish you're more likely to get several blanks before catching something worthwhile. I prefer not to blank, but still go after the better ones, if there is a good chance of catching them. I need to get back to Selsey - I've fished the point, but got weeded out; however, i have had decent bream from East beach and at Bognor. Thanks for watching and commenting Fred.
@@rodsangleuk6283 The secret with Selsey Bill point is watch the weather patterns, strong winds from west and south west stir up the weed, after a southly or south east blow the weed clears out and the fishing can be great, Black bream used to turn up in force about 2nd week in june, these were the bigger fish shortly followed by the smaller ones, if the weeds gone fish from 3 hours down to low and hopefully up to two hours up, beside the concrete groyne with the post on the end, there is deep water just beyond the post then it shallows 30 yards out further but runs faster ideal for bouncing a bream bait along the bottom, i expect to get back into it again soon and watching your light approach makes sense these days, good luck.
Yes small hooks are sometimes needed - I found that one out fishing Hayling Island missing most bites using size 4 and 6 hooks when tiny bream are about.
Cracking video as always mate. 👌. I can assure you that there are many species inhabiting the Royal Adelaide. Im a scuba diver although the wreck is pretty much decimated I've dived her on numerous occasions and you always get a good variety of fish species. I've seen Black Bream. Bass too a very good size lobsters and massive hard backed crabs. Strap conger on a night dive and on more than one occasion Trigger fish. There are loads of Pouting and a massive shoal of mackerel appeared on more than one occasion also. Keep the videos coming my friend very informative and very enjoyable. Cheers Paul 🎣
Yes - there are a number of good videos of dives on to the remaining panels, showing bream and triggers. I understand that there has been some damage to the ecosystem there during the storms of the last couple of winters and fishing is not quite so good now. Thanks for watching and commenting Paul.
I have no problem chucking 210g weights with them. I've not tried anything heavier - used to use 10 and 12oz leads fishing off the black jetty on Canvey, but there isn't the access there now, so haven't tried that.
Same as for black bream, only I step up my gear a bit for them and use two hook clipped-down rigs with size 2 and size 4 chinu type hooks. I have also caught one here on crab.

I would have been tempted to lightly hook one of those small Pouting and fish it about 10 yards out on the Arcadia to see if Mr Bass was about.
That's a tactic worth trying. I used to catch quite a few decent bass doing that night fishing at Cogden.

I fish two bass rods rated around 4oz, normally fishing from the piers and harbour, Poole and Weymouth. Are you chucking out big grip leads?
