    Well, I'm never planning to get that deep into my engine, but that was very interesting nonetheless! Thanks.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Very interesting.
    Any change in the rod journal bearing clearance over the years?

      no. spec has been 0.2 - 0.6mm since pantah, which is 0.8 to 2.4 thou. i generally go 1.5 - 2 thou, but 2.5 seems better for race engines i'm told.

    Seeing those tapered primary snouts gives me PTSD. Some of them really put up a fight.

      lol. we did one at an importer training day years ago on a 996 i'm guessing. they thought they'd demonstrate the factory tool to us. the big bang was the tool breaking.

      @@bradthebikeboy the factory tool was worthless. I eventually settled on heat, wax, and a hydraulic puller (made in Australia IIRC) then giving the edge of the gear a whack with a brass hammer.

      @@hordboy i also use a hydraulic puller, but i imagine it's from china.

    Thank you Brad for sharing this..
    [1994 US spec 900ss/sp bike owner] now with ~39K miles on "unopened" engine..
    .. and I do worry about that plug backing out..
    Is it ever worth having these cranks "balanced" upon rebuild time ?

      @bradthebikeboy  9 місяців тому +1

      depends how much you're changing stuff. i've had a few engines balanced that were otherwise std and i can't feel it, but the owners say they can. i put pistons 50grams lighter in my 750 and didn't notice any difference at all. but if it's all apart, why not. it's only more money.

    Do you have any info on cases?

    Thanks for that. Is the ST3 the longest stroke? Any variation in the cam drive shaft

    • @bradthebikeboy
      @bradthebikeboy  6 місяців тому

      the ST3, 1000 and 1100 are all 71.5mm stroke. i'd say the cranks are the same, but possibly machined for a different balance factor as the ST3 has shorter rods. some of the timing shafts are relieved a little for big end clearance, but i think they're largely all the same apart from the water pump drive snout.
