Ranks in ROTJ: Navy Commander? You're a commander. Navy Captain? You're a commander. Army Major? You're a commander. Special Army Operations Engineer High Colonel? You're a commander. Navy Admiral? You're a commander. Moff? Oh you're definitely a commander. 😂
This has bothered me since childhood! thank you for explaining the costumers mishaps! also it was really cool hearing the bio's of all the background officers I love that stuff!
This is going to slightly break the immersion next time I watch RoTJ lol. I wonder if you will ever do a video on the First/Final Order rank insignia as these are even more confusing imo. Love your vids thanks.
Just thought id point this out. All the imperial uniforms that are grey and dark green, they were made with a material called gaberdine. In certain lighting,it makes the the uniforms appear grey and a light or dark green.
Great video as usual! I have long been bothered by the fact that admiral Piet has had the wrong rank insignia on his clothes in Jedi. Long live the Empire!
Thanks, my friend. I think I mentioned it for a couple of the ranks in the video. The Captain and Commander ranks consisted of the same three red over three blue, apart from the Commander's plaque, which was spaced tiles. The Army General also had spaced tiles from memory, etc 👍
0:42 // This year (2023) Hasbro released a corrected version of *Admiral Firmus Piett* in the "Imperial Officers" box set that appeared in "The Vintage Collection" line. The carded figure is actually "Captain Piett". But both figures have their respective place now. Piett was first officer on the Executor under the Command of Admiral Ozzel in "The Empire Strikes Back".
Agreed 👍 as you know held the ranks of Captain and Fleet Admiral. His rank plaques represented in the films ESB and ROTJ must not confuse the two ranks.
What many people fail to realize is that during that time we were all wearing Commander tags in honor of a fallen commander that was recently deceased in battle whom we all admired deeply. We had permission to do this. If you really dive into the deep lore then you would know that I’m completely making this up on the spot.
Code cylinders not "coat cylinders." The cylinders are security devices that allow them access to secure areas of ships and installations as well as classified computer information and systems.
The only thing that makes any kind of sense is that the rank we see was actually some kind of ID badge like everyone wore 3 red over 3 blue. Just to indicate they were a senior officer and not indicating rank. Likewise, people with no rank simply had removed it since they were in field uniforms. Maybe this was done due to the top secret nature of the second death star project To avoid identifying senior officers or the people who were the most valuable and in charge.
I understand your points, but looking at the entire imperial rank system over the course of the Empire's reign. The movie Return of the Jedi is completely at odds with The Empire Strikes Back. The rank system l showed in the video was the rank system used for The Empire Strikes Back, not for ROTJ. I would love to ask Goerge Lucas's view on this as the plaques used or not used were in the main incorrect compared to SW published material of the 1980s.
Captains serve many positions on a Star Destroyer but they serve mid ranked officer role but Naval or Ship Captain would serve as a senior officer any other mid ranked officer serves below the ship's Captain or higher and empire strikes back had the same showing captains also be in charge of navigation communications and more but they will never outrank a Naval ship Captain
In the Confederate States Army, nearly all general officers wore the same insignia, regardless of rank (three stars enclosed in a laurel wreath). Exceptions were Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston, who wore the insignia of a Confederate colonel (three stars).
Maybe so, and maybe it was intentional, but the costumes for the movie and the ranks seem to be completely at odds with everything l have looked at for previous movies and rank systems. It would be great if Lucasfilm could clarify the subject, though.
I think a ship as large as the Executor could easily have a number of captains in charge of various sections of the ship, who hold the same rank as the first officer yet are functionally subordinate to them. What makes less sense is the Navy Security commander informing Piett of the ship's position. This would surely come from a Line Officer in charge of the ship's helm.
Thanks for explaining that. I literally and I promise you just watched return to the Jedi before I watched your video. I was wondering why they were wearing the wrong plaques on their uniforms and had different cylinders but not the right numbers. Especially Moff Jarred(I know the spellings wrong). But I did notice Darth Vader called him “I hope so for your sake commander, I am not as forgiving as the emperor is.” Do you know why he called him commander instead of by Moff Jarred? do you think that was just a dialogue snafu or did somebody on the script notice? He was wearing a commander plaque and wrote that line for Vader in the movie? Long live the empire. Long live the Empire
An unknown and completely made up by me fact that nobody else knows is that the entirety of the Imperial rank insignia stockpile had been stored aboard the first Death Star. So in the aftermath of its destruction everyone just had to make do with whatever they could get their hands on. Which is why you see a lot of officers without rank insignia, and a lot of higher officers with insignia that are actually meant for lower ranks.
You I do have another question to ask you? What was Conan Antonio Motti officer rank is he higher rank than Thawn? I'll ask this do you think Mottie and Thawn would work well together? I'll say I think they would have agree to disagreements towards one another. I'll say this about Admerial Motti he was ruthless and wasn't incompetent.
The rank bar for Grand Moff Tarkin is not a military rank. It is explicitly Civilian verified in Star Wars: Rebels. It is for Governors. Moff is a term reserved for special, high ranking imperial officials. Moff Tion would most certainly not wear the Governor Rank bar.
Agreed, a Grand Moff, A Moff, etc, were a governmental title. However, l simply referring to the plaques that should have been used in the movie by the costume designers.
The rank chart on page 120 inside the Complete Guide to Warfare just covers the imperial navy and the system used prior to the disastrious defeat at the Battle of Yavin. The WEG Imperial Sourcebook covers an all encompassing imperial military rank chart including both the imperial army and navy. Hope that makes sense?
Wait. I'm still thinking about it: I've also heard years ago that "opinion" about the error of the costume designer. But, are we sure about that news ? It seems very strange that no one noticed it (for example, I'm thinking to Admiral Piett's actor, or even Mark Hamill who was very commited on set). The only way which appearing to be possible is that it was discovered only the day the shots were made !
I am surprised nobody thought the plaques on the costumes were incorrect. As l mentioned in the video, l can't see how it could not have been a mistake as the rank system would have had to change significantly to the point where it didn't make much sense when comparing the different ranks against each other. The rank chart featured clearly shows what should have been used. It had to be a mistake.
I agree. From my perspective, it would make sense to incorporate the rank plaques. I doubt it will ever happen, though, which is a shame, but who knows 🤔 👍
Hello my friend I got another interesting question to ask you. I remember I ask you if Grand Admiral Thrawn would respect Pettit and you said yes, he would have mutual respect. I'll ask this question do you think Thrawn and Ozzel would respect each other if they worked work together? I'll give you my opinion not really because Ozel was an incompetent officer I'll say this I think Thrawn would respect Pettit and work well with him Ozel not really I think Thrawn and Ozel would have disagreements and Ozel was incompetent and plus Vader didn't like Ozel how do you think Trawn would deal with him?

You know I have an interesting question to ask you? This is a question Pettit in your opinion why Vader didn't kill Pettitt in the end of Empire Strikes Back? I think a lot of people have different opinion I think there's a lot of reasons why I'll give you one reason I think Vader really like Pettitt he did his job right and followed orders there are some officers Vader liked and I think Pettitt was one of them.
Agreed, Vader favored Piett from earlier in his career, and even made sure he was assigned to his ships when on missions. Although Piett tried avoid being in his service due to high rate of officer excecutions under Vader's command. However, there was a mutual respect between the two because Vader bascially thought Piett was competent.

Easy explanation is supply issues and worsening discipline. Shows how the Empire has been stretched thin and the huge loss that the Death Star inflicted on the Empire.
That doesn't account for the Empire Strikes Back movie though where the rank plaques were used to the letter by the costume designers. Something went wrong with the costume designers.
