no it is right onion was the thing was affordable in turkey since turkey was very nice place to make farming the biggest are or region is "geographically" middle turkey is great place to farm onion and wheat so this is kind a " metaphor " in turkish "eating onion bread" - eating the most affordable things... but it is kind a metaphor xd as i told before onion is unfortunately not that much affordable for years i hope it will be again xd...
