Actually, this ceremony is for girls. A ceremony is held the night before the wedding. First, henna is applied to the hands and the girl is made to cry with folk songs (because she has lefting her mother and going to husband). Then it is said that we have cried enough and the fun begins. This custom is not performed on men. I didn't quite understand what Mabel was trying to do here. First, started out as wanting a girl. Then there was henna application. These are different ceremonies held at different times.

Hi Jane. Probably, you even got this in Turkish but the translation of paragraph above: Mabel Matiz is actually dentist and then he has become a singer. (He prefered that the way.)
The small phograph in the wall is Sezen Aksu, who is one of the most famous singers & composers in Turkey.
The women organize an event called “henna night”for having fun amoung themselves before wedding ceremony. And then they apply henna their hand. It stays on hand for a while like temporary tattoo. It’s a traditional ritual for everyone who is getting married and for men while going military service.
