When you talked about Hemingway and saying its important to talk about flawed artists in the past. Can you apply this argument to southern revolutionary leaders? Is it ok for certain southern statues to stay erect because it is important to learn from our past and the effects it has had on our present?
I'm glad you asked EALO, and keeping in mind I'm not like authority on any of this but here's my take (APOLOGIZES FOR LENGTH): Sculpture specifically has a long history of being the medium the west uses to elevate / highlight figures and ideals it considers important. Example, Michelangelo's David was commissioned by Florence to say "we're a small city state surrounded by more powerful goliaths but we're the underdog so watch out" - it was made and displayed in a public space to embody the values Florence wanted to show off as its true self. So, if we apply that to statues of Confederate generals, theres a disconnect where a southern state is or town is saying (at least) "we value a person who in the eyes of the federal government was a traitor and tried to leave the union" - so as a public work, it appears to oppose the values of unity that _every state_ should stand for in the US of A. But more than that, people are upset that we'd elevate generals who fought a war fundamentally over whether states had the right to continue slavery, since a sculpture in a public space is saying "we think this person's ideas and actions are what we stand for". ALL THIS SAID, I think the ideal situation would be to move the sculptures to a museum or a space specifically dedicated to preserving a historical artifact. we shouldnt destroy them, we should remember they were built and why. They ideally should be replaced with something that embodies the values a town or state has today and TBH i appreciate that we have statues of founding fathers who were slave owners and I think it ultimately comes down to some of the intent. A statue of george washington is almost certainly meant to highlight his efforts to create a country where liberty and freedom were the rule of law (thats what we're celebrating). A sculpture of a confederate general, built after the civil war (most of which during the Jim Crow era) appears to signal to a lot of black american's that even if the south lost, they're still not welcome. TLDR I think its a complicated matter, and I think its important to morn and for states and towns to have things that celebrate their past and heritage but if its a statue it will be scrutinized for what it represents.
@@BraveNewWear i agree with everything you said . especially about re location of the statues. you could argue that the meaning of the statues has changed overtime . With that being said, looking forward to future videos love your content! :)

I encountered a Black woman who is Jewish and Bipolar on Tik Tok, and I was surprised to see that her response was that we don't understand how bipolar can make you delusional, psychotic, feel like you're bein persecuted. IMO, this is a hard convo bc he's clearly not mentally with us. His frontal lobe, the part of the brain we use to reason, is fucked.
As someone who has spent a lifetime on the autistic spectrum, I'm certain that is 'his deal'. There are those among us who can almost pull off 'normal'. What gets you is, frustration. You can't handle it like 'normal' people. You might be smart and creative and drive yourself, you are almost 'one of them' but you aren't. But you rise up. You take on more responsibility and you keep reaching. Then one day you're at the point you can't do anymore. Instead of formulating a new strategy to take on the new obstacle, you just blow. I lost jobs in this way, myself. Nothing like at Kanye's level, but I recognize. The man is mis-diagnosed. His 'depression' or 'bipolar' facets are manifestations of, His being on spectrum.
Don't really have any thoughts of my own, great video, it really sucks to see your favorite artists become a shell of who you thought they were. Apparently he's had feelings like this for years but it just the most vocal about it now. Really makes me wonder who else agrees with this kinda stuff behind closed doors. got any alternatives for his yeezy gap hoody you recomend it's my favorite hoody sadly and looks like I won't be buying another one tbh 🙃
Dude it would just be wearing a Gap hoodie, if you had an alternative people wouldn’t be able to tell a difference, no one would judge you for wearing that hoodie I promise. Everyone can respect the artistry.
As someone who's been conscious of Kanye for the last 15 years or so, it's been very heartbreaking to witness his steady self-destruction. I've always been a fan of his discography, it's arguable one of the best in hip hop, always boundary-pushing, and I've also admired his fashion sense and just general ethos of irreverence, especially during the Yeezus era. While we've witnessed many, many low moments of his over time, I just get more and more frightened to ask things like "how much worse can it get?" Because with him, there's always a boundary to leap over, there's always a fence to burst through. The same energy that drives his obsession with graphic design, architecture and sound of a snare drum is the same energy that is pushing him deeper and deeper into dark waters.
agreed, I think his vision / aesthetic during Yeezus was my favorite, and I agree it seems like the impulse he had to challenge the status quo (novel and interesting in the past) is the same thing thats pushing him towards saying things like "i love hitler"

i know, I've been thinking about that too, whether he'd become so out of control / out of touch that he dies from suicide. I remember, eons ago, after the taylor swift debacle, he seemed genuinely embarrassed (idk if that was just PR, I thought Dark Fantasy was born out of trying to pull himself from that feeling). But my point is, if he does feel true remorse at some point i worry it will be too much.

Hello Christian once again, awesome video. Kanye has been the artist I listened to the most (top 0.01% in 2021 and top 0.5% in 2022 on Spotify Wrapped). While I wholeheartedly disagree with his claims in the past few months, I still believe he is a musical genius at some region within that antisemitic brain of his. I personally believe it was an unfortunate coincidence that his egoism, bipolarity, and religious faith (about being loving to all) had collided with regards to the topic of Nazis and Hitler. Again, what he said was clearly wrong, but I will still be bumping to his song Famous and how he made Taylor Swift ("that b**ch" in his lyrics) famous. By the way, nice hair.
I wont share my spotify wrapped and will plead the 5th...but I also am disappointed that an artist i loved would say things so nasty I can't here his songs without thinking about it. IDK if there is a connection between what allows people to create art that is truly moving and do things that are truly horrible, hes not alone in that camp. But I do worry that the impulses that made him rebel against the status quo musically might be the same impulses driving him now - glad to see your comments as always :)

This was a great video. I’d argue that Andre 3000 is more deserving than Kanye in terms of influence to this most recent generation of young artists. In both fashion and music. I believe the only difference between 3000 and Ye is that Ye is a lot louder and wants the recognition. While Andre seems to be comfortable (modestly) playing the background and making appearances here and there every few years.

There's a big difference between a distasteful opinion and a direct call for violence. That's the line where all the reasoning has to stop, no matter how influential a person is. The fact that so many especially in the Black community continue to support him is a disgrace.
well dog, I had a feeling that would be the overt opinion of a lot of people who watch my videos which is kinda why I wanted to make it.
