Long time no hear!. We have been experiencing some wild weather here in Greece 🇬🇷 .lots of thunder ⛈️ lightning. Heavy rain falls and high winds at times. The Temps at night now have fallen greatly. Snow on mount Taygetos and some of the lower mountains. But the weather is very disturbed. More rain forecast which Greece needs. The olive picking this year is abysmal compared to previous yrs due to drought earlier this yr.. We used to get rain every day for an hr or two. Not anymore!!!, how the weather has changedvover the years. Instead of rain we get more wild fire's. Thankfully not round us but very , very near. A very Happy Christmas to you and a happy new year. Let's hope the weather will be better.
It is, honestly, amazing how much the weather has changed in the last 5-10 years. I remember 20 years ago, at this of year, we used to have 1-2 meters of snow and I used to build tunnels in the snow with my friends. Then around 2015 snow started to be more scarce every year. And since like 2019, there's been 0 snow and each winter is warmer and warmer. I doubt snow will ever return here in my lifetime.
very strange, last year I thought hope for a cold winter here in the Alps was gone but now it looks like it will come back, we are gonna get -20 degrees tomorrow morning and temperatures won't rise above freezing for a long time, and yesterday night we had a very strong snowfall, however western europe is a whole other story, in the Benelux for now this December we only had a few snowfalls and lows below zero
Indeed! My first winter in this NE Poland town, the nearby hypermart had a prominent display of sleds. As the snowless winter wore on, the stacks of unbought sleds seemed more and more forlorn.
Irrelevant. Your timeframe analysis means nothing. If you pan out to a larger timescale, it’s a cyclical process. Totally predictable if you factor in the main influence over it. FYI, it’s not us who drive climate. That’s a blatant lie, to explain away why the apparent anomalies are happening. You are welcome
Tomorrow is Winter Solstice and we still havent had any snow down here is SW France except at higher elevations in the Pyrenees. Pests such as ticks arent being killed by prolonged frosts.
@ No. Because Ticks live underground in Winter and unless the ground freezes to a depth of 30cms/12” or more in some cases, the Ticks survive and they reappear sooner. This means they spread diseases for longer in the year. It’s not just Ticks though. Many plants require freezing temperatures to regulate their dormant cycles, as do some animals. This also follows on to a wetter Spring season which inhibits flowering plants which then causes Bee colonies to have to eat their own sugar reserves…. it’s a big mess!
In northwest Portugal, moskitos are still annoying us. Birds that used to migrate, now stay in winter. My peppers are still giving flowers and fruits...not normal at all
I’ve started planting winter flowering shrubs because the last 5yrs I’ve had honey bees, bumblebees and butterflies in my garden all year round. It’s crazy this never used to happen. I’m in the East Midlands of the UK.
Hiya WW, and thanks for taking the time to explain 🙌🏻 SW Finland is crazy slippery - NO traction on some dirt roads nor on asphalt. Studded tires are not even helping. Freezing tonight and plenty of rain coming for the weekend 🙄 Regardless, I wish you a nice Friday evening and have a nice winter solstice tomorrow. Finally, the days will start getting longer 🎉 YEAH!
Hope not to much wind in Hungary. Because a tree fell on my roof today, not very happy about that. Please stay dry And safe. Thank you weather watcher.🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Today was very sunny, almost like an early spring day here in southern Sweden. There is no snow forecast here for Xmas. Thanks for the update. Best wishes Peter
If we kick in that Negative Phase, we could be looking toward a drier snow season for Europe, though it will be colder in the Netherlands and even Scotland-UK. Thanks for the update WW!
Many thanks. I have outdoor gladiolus that are about to flower - in the South UK. And a crab apple tree threw out some blossom a few weeks ago and now have 2 red crab apples on an otherwise leaf free tree. Our seasons are very topsey turvey.
@WeatherWatcher14 to be fair that has always happened now and then. i am 62 and some autumns have been very mild and caused nature to behave different than usual. Same goes for winter and spring. And the opposite as well to cold and nature behave accordingly. Weather has always changed, sometimes dramatically throughout billions of years. Besides that Homo Sapians. @@angelatester2471 thanks. I know that humans cause damage with our behavior but not all changes in nature are man made. Humans are only a small part of life on earth but with a great impact if we are not careful. Around freezing and calm weather in Reykjavík, Iceland. + a little bit snow. Just the way I like it. But on monday we will get pounded with a Low with wind and rain 😉
Georgia Mountains jave 2-4 meters snow! It's both good and bad cuz theres no electricity and the temperatures sometimes even reach -12°C or -22°C at night (-22°C mostly in the northern part of Georgia). Last year the snow kept melting
Thanks for the update! We have all missed you very much :P Apparently, here in the Canary Islands, we are expecting tomorrow, Saturday 21st, and Sunday 22nd, strong electric storm across all islands, with greater force on the western islands, and high chance of hailstorms across all islands! Buckle up and hold on tight vibes! heheheheh. See if I join your server, I'm pretty keen on uploading pics of weather phenomena that occur on these crazy little islands ;)
Southern Hungary is a bit warmer than average but next week it's gonna turn colder. Precipitation is very close to average, rain with an offchance of snow
I live in eastern Norway, and really hoping that we get at least some good snow this winter. So far it's only snowed a tiny bit once where I live, and that disappeared fast.
Theory crafting by amateur learner: Negative NAO + easterly QBO = increased likelikood of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). I read there are around 6 SSW per decade mostly in January and February and that in 1 or 2 occasions polar air masses can reach southern Europe, so, although the most likely scenario is mild winter, there's a non negligible chance of freezing conditions or blizzards in places that are not at all prepared for them.
It's turning cold and soggy in this NE Poland town. Been grey for days, with infrequent bursts of sunshine. Blah weather! Reverent Solstice, and Merry Christmas to all (who celebrate it)!
Winter in the Balkans is not strong, but at elevations higher than 1300-1500m snow is much better than in the last winter. Now with the 2 cyclones passing the area, we will have decent snow and if the weather will remain cold and stable, this might turn into a good snow season, at least for the next 20-30 days, because no one knows how the weather in february and march will be. It seems like this winter is better in the Balkans than in the Alps at the same elevation
It's mild here Donegal Ireland it's from about 5° to 11° during the day few hailstone showers but not many considering it's nearly Christmas it's not normal but that's the way it's been here for years now, then spring time late February March April we get snow showers, frost, hailstones and a bitter cold east wind sometimes, personally I would rather have the winters we used to have and the spring time we used to have, but it looks like it's gone
Maybe a personal observation, but I do believe most meteorologists overlook the impact of astrology on seasonal weather, not just lunar cycles, but the transition of major planets.
Weather watcher season. At least the Earth approaches Perihelion, an opportunity to stand in the sun behind a window and enjoy an additional 7% of warmth compared to mid summer. The NAO looks unremarkable, but we should all have noted an annual tendency for the westerlies to settle down and be replaced by drier, colder East/Northerlies in Jan/Feb, if we are not fence posts. I always attributed this to a Winter time lowering of sea surface temperature/evaporation, and an increasing temperature gradient to the north and east producing gravitational spills of mounded high pressure air. But that would be mere speculation on my part…
I sort of hope for frost honestly Kinda also don't, because i have slowly been creating a garden with less and less frost resistant varieties. But i have gotten my hands on extra wraps for plants to protect them against snow and frost just in case Also got s hedgehog house 🙃
Here in the UK the last 2/3 years have been bonkers mild possibly including this one. Three consecutive years averaging 11 C + by CET standards. Prior to 2022 not a single year registered 11 C !!
Morocco has suffered dramatically during the last four years from this weather pattern ; Almost no rain at all .....I hope this high pressure move from the Atlantic seacto let some rain makes its way to south Europe and North Africa !!
The rest of December looks extremely dry for Portugal, which is why I’m looking to January and the potential return of the negative NAO phase for hope. Negative NAO phases are historically the very best for rain in Portugal 🙂
In other words we have no idea what the weather is going to do beyond tomorrow and will certainly guarantee nothing 😊. I'll stick to just looking out of my window 😉.
-NAO phases historically have been the best for rain in Portugal. Positive NAO is really bad for us in terms of getting rain, since it all goes north. This is the pattern we seem to be stuck in for years now. So hopefully by January this -NAO is able to materialize and we see some much needed rain!
I have a question: Do these, any, weather models take into account the ridiculously vast amounts of carbon-dioxixide, sulfur-di- and -trioxide, metal oxides and other nice particulates that the population of this planet dumps into the atmosphere on midnight, jan 1st every year? Just because it's a tradition... Not to mention the vast amounts of money that _literally_ gets burned up in the atmosphere.
