I had an American auto wire harness and it was garbage. Followed petes advice and now i recommend kwik wire for anyone doing this task. Thanks pete! Helped me get my 71 challenger back on the road after 20+ years! Great in depth video to boot.
I bought a painless kit for my 62 C10, I'm absolutely completely impressed. It came with a 130 page detailed manual for my application, everything is like GM OEM but updated, I can get fuses, flashers & relays from anywhere. I honestly don't know how you can do better for under $400 After doing some research & listening to home boy ramble on.. my advice, go with a painless kit
Absolutely great job Pete. As car guys, we find something we like and we stick with it. Honestly, this is how most of us end up married as well! (LOL) As an auto tech for decades, my early career started with a wiring diagram that folded out 8 page long in the back of the factory service manual. Head lights on the left of page 1, tail lights on the right of page 8. Everything else was in the middle with wire colors only. I am passionate about proper wiring, colors, terminal position, grounds and how to use a digital multi meter to perform voltage drops, opens, shorts & high resistance. Many don’t know but a “Sun Roof” (Or Moon Roof) has four channels with hoses that go down both “A” pillars and “B” pillars and terminate at the rocker panel drain. Clog these up with tree leaves or daily debris, and you have water under the carpet & seats. This causes opens, shorts, power to grounds, all kinds of issues. Thanks again for bringing this companies product to our attention. Thanks Pete!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I have my Dad's '76 F250 that caught on fire quite a while back. It has a 460 out of a continental instead of the original 390. I only have a basic understanding about wiring. Been struggling to decide how to start fixing it. Don't have the money to pay someone to do it. Also would like to be able to understand it. I decided that ripping out all the existing wire would be the safer way to go. Trying to understand wiring diagrams I found this video. The basic harness is exactly what I need! I love that everything is grouped and clearly marked for this dummy. I am so happy now- I might actually be able to fix it myself!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR! Me And MInnie Hopes Everyone Is Well and Happy For This Ending of a LONG YEAR and the Start Of A NEW YEAR!
Thank you Pete for showing us this, That has to be the nicest harness i have seen. Even American Auto Wire for example. You and Minnie have a Great Holiday season and, We will talk soon. Shane
Excellent episode Pete. I really appreciate your detailed (no BS) explanation. Especially since I was looking at replacing the wiring harnesses of a Datsun 240Z I’m considering purchasing.
Exlent. So how would you go into wiring LT1 5th gen. 455, use stand alone wiring harness or is there somthing cheaper as good out there. For 33 buick street rod.
Watched this video and figured I’d buy the Kwick wire kit based on your review. Yes the instructions are nice. But man they couldn’t have made this “universal” harness much shorter. There isn’t many wires I don’t have to extend. Your better off to pay half the price and get a painless harness at least you’d get what you pay for. This kit is nice but not worth the money. Especially with the length of their wires
Thanks, Ive used Painless twice before, and you're right, they are smaller wires and hard to read wires. Painless does have a good manual and good phone tech support.
I got mine and was very impressed. Not only a very good thick manual, each wire has its use right in it. Printed on the coating of the wire. A very good choice for the money. I'll post again once done to let everyone know just how hard or easy it was to use.
I'm just starting out, I'm restoring my 1984 Ford Ranger 2.3L long bed, glad you covered more than enough wire. like the thickness/length. I have a question. how many circuits do I need. and what do I do if I have extra wires? I have the old harness to lay out. I thinking of going with water proof, what do you think? Don't plan to drive it in a lake, but may go through a puddle, or normal down poor road rain. I have standard windows. Just have brake lights, reverse lights (2) each. parking lights 6 may go to 8, I have a hood light, dome light two head lights high beam low beam. Gas tanks (2). AC unit, no electric fan, electronic ignition. installing a Holley Spider. What is a circuit? speakers behind the seat. and under the dash. Original Radio standard cigarette lighter. I could go big but would have all the extra. Looks like 14 circuit water proof $445.00
I used their wire harness 10 years ago for my 1953 Ford hardtop. It was great, instructions also had many scenarios depending on alternator or generator, was very upgrade friendly. I will buy from them again for the next hot rod!
Just like Pete said it, in his early videos he only buys the tool's that works; man is a classic straight up professional can clearly see it in his year's in the business and work he's been putting in.
Pete SOLD! it is really self evident which is the better product. Thanks I had never heard of this company but when the time comes . I will be giving them a call to talk about my wants and needs for my project. While pretty fair at most thing mechanical, wiring has always been a short coming . Lots of uncertainty and confusion. So have always avoided when possible or even change the project to minimize the wiring, This was possible because my "brother from another mother" was a wiring savant. He has moved out of state. So now i have to deal. Dam I miss Bill been buds since HS . Last century 1977 on... Once again my thanks to our friend Pete!!!... Have a good one
Say Pete, i have a 1980 C10 Big 10 SILVERADO 350 5.7 . She's a everyday work truck. Which wiring harness would you recommend . Please advise thankyou Robert.
Ya know, based on what you've shown here, I think I will also use one of these kits in my build... Know this vid is old but it looks like the quality is still there and the price is reasonable... Thanks Pete
Damn, Where were these people back in 1980 when I was building my 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix ? Back then was a lot more difficult to tackle vehicle wiring as to everything you need today is just a push button away. We really had to scrounge around for many items we needed, but in way, looking back, it was ( to me ) more rewarding. Pete, remember the days of scrounging?

I’m working on a 86 gmc caballero(el Camino), I’m trying to see if that type of harness will work on mine??? Tired to reach Kiel wire yesterday but couldn’t get nobody…
I've never wired a car before, but this helped me decide on a 14 circuit Kwikwire harness for my '73 Mercury Montego GT. The factory harness is garbage, so I imagine this is going to make the finished car a lot more reliable 😁
Pete thanks my brother watching your videos has been a great learning and motivational experience. I am currently restoring a 81 Z28 first restoration project for me .Please keep up the great videos t you are making they are a big help. Thanks Dean Fortunato Cooper City,Florida
Thanks for making this video, I am from Australia, and I have to wire an Fastback Celica (and im not electrically inclined past doing some stereo installations), I assessed the instructions and documentation from quite a few kits available, and after seeing this I was sold. Have ordered a 22 circuit Kwik Wire Kit :)
Holy crap this company is the bomb, just placed my order after watching this and then actually looking at their website/product and literally hundreds of customer reviews!
It drives me crazy that you tuber kids like Tanner Fox , Roman Attwood and Fusey tube steak are making big big $$ bucks from videos of shit mean while you have been putting great videos for years and are still doing it hard . cheers
What gets in my craw is that the channels I mentioned have millions of views and make big bucks BUT have no real content . Attwood (smile more ) Fousey tube ( fuck knows) Tanner Fox ( look at the car I just bought and proceed to destroy in gold wrap) Meanwhile Pete puts out videos that actually show you a skill.
Pete I've been watching your videos from some time from Brisbane; Australia. I've used a kwikwire harness in my 1971 XY Fairmont sedan and although a few mods were needed to suit the RHD aussie ford (i started with a 14 circuit GM harness) it was a nice easy deal. Keep up the good work Pete; not only have a learned a hell of a lot watching your videos but have been very careful when engaging shops to do work I'm not capable of doing myself - and your videos ensured i knew what i was looking for when speaking to shops.
Painless for my GTO was 130 pages and color photos everywhere and not stapled on the corners. It is a book. Granted this one has binders on it, but that is the only difference in the book.
Merry Christmas Pete & Minnie and to all the characters down at SWRNC. This video helped me tons. I'm at the wiring stage of a '80 Z28 restoration and was stalled as to what to buy. I'll call Kwik Wire today to place my order and let them know where I learned about them.
Thanks and Merry Christmas To you.. When you call Kwik Wire ask for Chris Wix.. Tell him you saw the video on DIYAUTOSCHOOL... You won't regret it.. Pete
Pete,i can't thank you enough for doing this video.I'm trying to do a early GTO and while I'm some time before being able to rewire etc, I always have tried to learn what may be best when I need it. In hopes I can complete this project I want TO SAY THIS HELPS ME DECIDE WHAT WILL BEST SUIT MY NEEDS! THANKS.
Thanks brother you've helped me a lot over the last couple years that I've been messing with my car. I'm watching your body work and painting and studying it hopefully I can get a cheap welder and some body work tools. Choosing the right wiring harness is going to help me a lot also. Your videos are awesome thanks for the great you really helped me out a lot 👍💪👌
You sound like Tommy Lee Jones. What if I don't have a welder to tac that main unit onto the firewall? How should I go about mounting it? Hopefully going to start rewiring my 74 Duster soon. Thanks for your vids.
Hey DIY. I have an 87 yj I want to rewire. Tell me how to tell what harness I will need. It’s just the base model that has had splices and new wire runs etc that are now hard to trace with lots of opens and you probably know or can imagine. My son is letting my daughter use it as her first vehicle. Id like to make this a good operating Jeep. Anyway, thx for sharing and look forward to your advice.
I came across your video and I like it I been shopping around for a wire harness for my gmc topkick and I really like what u said about them so I got on line and ordered my harness threw them so I want to tank you very much and I like it video keep up the great work thanks
Just got one for a 70 nova. I’m not a wire guy at all. It’s a very nice harness but I’m having a hard time just trying to get the fuse box mounted. It’s not fitting in the stock location. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong but I’m giving up for now and try it later
Thanks for the info. I am getting close to the end and my son is getting close to needing me to help him wire his 1953 Ford truck with a 58 j2 Oldsmobile engine. I may not be here for him but that is a easy he could wire it up! Thanks
Thanks for the awesome info on the Kwikwire harness. I checked their website out and nothing for a old nissan. I've got a few questions about wiring up a full standalone harness for the bare essentials. If you have some time please comment back and I'll email you my questions.
I’m curious to know if I can eliminate my ecm and run this kwikwire setup. 53’ ford stand alone Holley sniper efi and dual sync distributor. AC,, power windows, and Dakota digital gauges. This wiring looks a lot better than the rats nest I have going on now that I just ripped out. Difference between chassis powered and ecm?
I got this online parts co.that says I can replace the harnesses on my '85 Ford Ranger by installing an Holley Carburator but it said discontinued hmm.
great review Pete! and i believe, when a manufacturer makes the effort to produce a good instruction manual, it means he wants you to do it right and securely.i'm sure you wouldn't want the car to burn down. Enjoy the Holiday and be safe.
Thanks Pete they are up the road from me, I have seen them at car shows and thought they were a small out fit not worthy of my time, now it will check them out.
Pete, great video and thanks so much for saving me from going the painful route as that is where I was headed. When I saw the manual, I was sold. I knew right there these boys weren't messing around. Merry xmas to everyone at SWRNC
Never heard of these guys at qwick. But this guy's looking for sponsorship. Pinning the stock harness is your best bet........... But PSI harnesses is a way better option. But not cheap. As well it comes wrapped.
Merry Christmas Pete, family, and especially Minnie from a displaced Dallas boy living in Virginia. I enjoy all your videos and have learned quite a lot. Happy New Year too
Once again a great video. Im going to put a new harness in my camaro and will strongly look at their product. My car has an ls swap and i hope they can help me out. Theres alot of criticts out there it seems. Screw them all. Loved the video
..I have the 22 circuit KWIK WIRE kit out in the garage for my "56 Chevy truck. Been sittin' there for a couple of years. I didn't buy it because it was cheap. It looked like the best bang for the buck. You're right Pete: I need to get off my fat, lazy ass and get back to work! Are you still in Texas? Great video, Pete.
Comparing wire sizes between harness brands by looking at them is not a valid comparison. Most brands use cross-link wire which comes in three insulation thicknesses; TXL, SXL, and GXL. That 14awg wire can be thinner on one harness and thicker on another with the conductor being the same. Depends on what was used. Overall looks like a good harness.
When do you decide its time to use a brand new harness vs reuse the existing one? I recently parted out a car that was so badly infested that I had to shovel the interior out one scoop at a time. And yet, the entire wiring harness was still usable. In the project I'm working on now, the previous owners hacked things up a bit but it's nothing you can't fix with a bit of solder and heat shrink.
Will these work on a 2002 stratus r/t coupe 3.0. manual trans /Eclipse gts/sebring lxi (sister cars) I have a stratus and the wiring from the alternator to the battery almost caught fire but was severely melted (unusable) ...the car is in pristine Condition asside from this ...I want to fix it and am being run in circles ...do I take it to a garage and get raped do it myself (I don't know wiring well but am inteligent lol) but I'm having a hell of a time ...every day my car sits is like stones in my gut ... frustrated as hell ...this is new territory for me ...I was trying to find one used on the internet they don't even label what it is half the time just wiring harness dodge ...any help would be appreciated thank you so much brother ,I will be checking these guys out also .
When you call them ask for Chris Wix and tell them you watched the video.. Thanks Pete--They also sell a smaller 4 circuit harness that would work great on your chopper..... Check out there website and see for yourself...
I got a aftermarket harness from a clown place on my 66 vete and it didn't work when I was done and I got a guy like you to go over other said I had it right then he found they had it switch I called them and they said it's not possible for them to make it mistake
Looks like a good product. What is even better are the manuals. Keep them with the owners manual and you have a great reference manual in the event something goes wrong years from now. Nothing worse than a hacked together harness. You start tracing a blue wire then find that it is spliced with brown lamp cord. WTF. Good video.
hey whats up, i see none of the comments have been replied to, was gonna ask if you ended up going with this wiring kit? if so, how had it been holding up?
@@hmurillo90 i had no luck on finding the right harness for my particular build yet, i kinda put it aside for the time being. I decided to build a workshop for my vehicle in aspect of having everthything organized when i do a major tear down.on it.. have you made a decision on which wiring harness to go with for you project yet?
u can save a lot of time fising wire thru the braided loom by using stiff thick copper wire ...just pinch the wire ends in it & put the stiff copper wire thru the braided loom 1st then pull & expand as u go along
I've only wired one car in my life (a 76 Camaro lt) But have wired oh crap dozens of MC's and frankly I wish I had bought the kwickwire for the Camaro. Thanks for the tip PETEAnd Merry Christmas
Great informative video..many thanks. Was wondering if you had an opinion on the Painless wiring harness kits say for the first generation Ford Broncos 66 to 77? Happy New Year....Rob from Saranac Lake, NY
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
Thanks for clearing this up, never knew they came with the factory connectors. The others companies I have used do not! Had to use half melted connectors that looked bad. Will use Kwik wire in the future. Merry Christmas Pete!!
Ive seen wire harness where all you got was a box full of bare wires and a cheezy 5 circuit glass fuse box that you had to wire up yourself.. What a joke....
I bought a kwik wiring kit for 1976 f150, I cant seem to find a video on how to install it though. My particular harness is a universal one, but this really doesn’t matter much. I’m trying to figure out how to remove the old harness without damaging anything but I can’t find any videos on how to do so. Have any tips?
Might I add, I took this wiring harness and my truck to a guy who wanted to charge me $1700 to install this. I don’t know if this is a regular type of price, but I would rather do it myself
I had an American auto wire harness and it was garbage. Followed petes advice and now i recommend kwik wire for anyone doing this task. Thanks pete! Helped me get my 71 challenger back on the road after 20+ years! Great in depth video to boot.

I really thank you alot brother for the information , I'm new on restoration but yuo answer the question about the wiring on my d200 dodge
Hey Pete... Do you think that Kwik would be the best choice for my 73 Chevy pickup?
What should you pay to get these installed what’s a fair price because I have Ben getting crazy quotes for a rewire
Getting kwik wire for sure now thanks again for the info...
Do you have videos on wiring the Chevy square bodies 1979’?
Identify what’s what etc..
I have a 1968 chevelle looking to replace. Whole car any ideas on the best choice to order from just need bone stock
Order the wire kit with the options you want. That way you don't have to do an upgrade later
Would you recommend a certain one for a 1976 international Scout ii ? It’s going to need to be completely rewired
I've also got a 1976. A guy on a Scout forum recommended the 22-circuit from Kwik Wire, but I'm still doing research as well.
Very Informative ! Big Norm ? Oh I get it lol Where in Central Fl to get 1970 Nova completely rewired ?
great review Pete! and i believe, when a manufacturer makes the effort to produce a good instruction manual, it means he wants you to do it right and securely.i'm sure you wouldn't want the car to burn down. Enjoy the Holiday and be safe.
Your exactly right.. It's all about doing it right and helping one an other to make it all happen!
Pitino I have a 1967 ford f100 truck wish one should I buy I trust you.
Thanks Pete they are up the road from me, I have seen them at car shows and thought they were a small out fit not worthy of my time, now it will check them out.
I wish I woulda watched this video before I bought my 20 circuit painless harness
Pete, great video and thanks so much for saving me from going the painful route as that is where I was headed. When I saw the manual, I was sold. I knew right there these boys weren't messing around. Merry xmas to everyone at SWRNC
FUCK PAINLESS! There's nothing Painless about their shit!
Kwik wire is what I am going to use in my Truck..... good to hear that it is good product. Merry Christmas!!!
Never heard of these guys at qwick. But this guy's looking for sponsorship. Pinning the stock harness is your best bet...........
But PSI harnesses is a way better option. But not cheap. As well it comes wrapped.
Pete this is a great video. Never thought to think you could cover this.
Love all your videos Pete but I was looking forward to your Christmas Special. Thanks for all your videos.
Merry Christmas Pete, family, and especially Minnie from a displaced Dallas boy living in Virginia. I enjoy all your videos and have learned quite a lot. Happy New Year too
Merry Christmas back at ya... Good Luck in Virginia...
Norm walked up looking like Bilbo Baggins.. hahahaha
This was very informative Pete. Thanks for all your tips. Merry Christmas to you, Minnie, and Axle!
Great video Pete. Thanks and keep the content coming
Great Info Pete, Have a Happy and Productive Year in your new location!!!
That was interesting and helpful. Thanks for making it. Maybe one day I️ will do my 1961 Impala. It needs it.
Thanks My Friend Pete. Always interesting, even to a guy who will never wire a car.
thanks Pete..........I was just looking for this on wiring for my car........thanks for the info have a great Christmas and New Year
Ill be here painting the 69 Mustang on Christmas day.. If I can get that done---It will be a GREAT CHRISTMAS for me!
I wish I could be there to help you.......you sure have helped me a lot with your videos..........thanks
never heard of this company went with American wire 1964 impala I will save this video when I buy a new harness for my 59 I like that kill swicth
Read the comment above from Jose Jimenez to get your full discription of the difference between American and Kwik Wire! Thanks for watching...
Shorts are easy to find. Cross over the fuse and see what starts to smoke.
I like the low guage wiring Kwik utilizes in their harnesses Pete
Much better then Painless! I can't stand them bastards! And Half The Price Too!
Another great video. I will be getting the kwik wire kit for my 67 flh HD. Pete you definitely get it.
WTF. Good video.
Thanks this is great info, im going with Kwik Wire now
hey whats up, i see none of the comments have been replied to, was gonna ask if you ended up going with this wiring kit? if so, how had it been holding up?
@@xraaurusreal97 that’s exactly what I am looking for
@@hmurillo90 i had no luck on finding the right harness for my particular build yet, i kinda put it aside for the time being.
Thanks for the breakdown very helpful.
THANKS a million Pete. Awesome video extremely helpful. God bless you and your Family this Christmas. May you have a prosperous New year.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR my friend Pete and Minnie.
Same to you Tommy,, Merry Christmas!
I've only wired one car in my life (a 76 Camaro lt) But have wired oh crap dozens of MC's and frankly I wish I had bought the kwickwire for the Camaro. Thanks for the tip PETEAnd Merry Christmas
Thanks for watching.. Pete
Great informative video..many thanks. Was wondering if you had an opinion on the Painless wiring harness kits say for the first generation Ford Broncos 66 to 77?
Happy New Year....Rob from Saranac Lake, NY
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?!
Ron Francis is the best to me
Thank you 🙏🏼 I have a old VW and I’m buying this!
