For me when nokia dies there’s no unique phone, from the shape to functionality, i remember staring at phone magazines with nokia all over the pages, and now same shaped brick
2000's is to mobile phone what 1890's to 1920's to handguns. Sure they had a lot of interesting and innovative design and ideas but most of them were not needed.
At the time, I went travelling for 3 months, when roaming was impossibly expensive. Its internal storage, camera and offline maps with GPS and Wifi made it the ultimate device. The ultimate smartphone. Nothing in the market came close to this phone. Not even WM phones. Also the Nokia E71. Not as exciting, but my goodness was it a beautiful metal device.
I think it's usable indeed, for music, email, calling and texting (SMS or open standards like IRC/XMPP) it's well, but also very much so for camera. The camera is still brilliant even today, it takes great shots. Remember 5 megapixels is basically like a still of 1080p+ video, it's much better quality than we'd think judging by that number. And it's not just about megapixels, the flash and (slow) focus on this thing works great, and the sensor they designed was great. It's just super chunky for 2020 (or even 2010!).
Had one in 2008, it took a Galaxy S4 for me to leave it behind in 2013. 5 years. 5 frigging years with the thing and it was still kicking, I switched purely because the 3.5mm jack was, well, not working anymore and it's BT antenna was so fucked it barely had 1.5m of range anymore for my headphones at the time. I doubt any phone I get today will get the same mileage or arrive as intact as the N95 did at its 5 years mark. It was, indeed, the pinnacle of the pre-glass-slab era of smartphones, and I miss it (prolly nostalgia but still).

I had this and remember laughing at how little the first iPhone could do compared to it. Also, why the fuck did AT&T want Nokia to remove WiFi but not Apple?
AT&T and other carriers could force Nokia and other manufacturers to do what they want, but Apple gets to make its own rules that the carriers must follow.
Steve Jobs refused to sign a deal with a carrier unless he had complete control over the design of the phone. Verizon disagreed. AT&T agreed but the price was a multi-year exclusivity deal. They realised just how much of a competitive advantage it would give them to carry a phone from Apple, and they were right.
Military Anecdote: Way back between 2007 and 2008, this phone formed part of an urban surveillance kit (i.e., surveillance in a city environment) at the time I was deployed with a small team for a year. Well, for some reason, the logistics personnel felt fit to include the Spider-Man DVD as part of the itemized kit supply list. So, for a couple of years, every time one of our teams took over the surveillance mission from a previous team, it had to account for the Spider-Man movie. Go figure.
Partner up with Netflix, $299 with a year of Netflix included and 3 years of Android updates and they would certainly move a few. Feels like a teenagers phone.
The speaker array would have been awesome. With UA-cam consumption not slowing down and apps like TikTok emphasizing music and voice playback, we need better audio more than ever.
@@faeinthebay Nokia has proprietary audio systems in their phones already (OZO Audio), so they could really capitalize on that with this kind of multimedia phone.

My ALL TIME FAVOURITE phone, all things to most men (and women) I owned two, first one for about three years. Then I "up/down graded" to an N97mini, for about 6-8 months, whereby during that relationship, I considered jumping from a bridge because of the despair of ditching my first love. I have 7 plus, bought it 2 years ago and it’s still fine, not even thinking changing it. While my previous devices I was changing them every 1.5-2 years. My first phone was Nokia 6233 in 2006, changed it to N95 8GB (Black one) although the 6233 was still working (and it’s still working until this day, the issue was bad camera and lacking of WiFi and GPS which N95 8GB provided). My N95 however was stolen 2 years later. And I stopped buying Nokia products until the Lumia 1020. Used it also 2 years as main phone but Windows Mobile was going to die and was less and less working apps, although the 1020 is still working today with the 6233. I’m really happy HMD brought Nokia back to life and the quality of product into it with clean android and 2 years of android updates. Waiting now for the 9.3 to get released and get a bit cheaper and buying it. Which will take around a year or so.
I had one of these in the late 2000s. By far the most useful feature to me was the inbuilt GPS. I used it as my in-car navigation device (using a Garmin app) for quite some time. And to think that is a feature everyone takes for granted now!

Then of course, *eBay* is also a good place to find old phones, although most sellers don't offer the bidding option anymore and only sell their stuff with the "Buy Now" button.
I envy you.
"the last of its kind" wrenches my heart out; miss those days.
That Spider-Man 3 edition looked so dope, even back then.
I had the n95 8gb, it was just amazing.
Its camera however was incredible.
"The N95 is another reminder" that since Nokia left, innovation has been slowing.
For me when nokia dies there’s no unique phone, from the shape to functionality, i remember staring at phone magazines with nokia all over the pages, and now same shaped brick
in that time, 2007 the camera on n82 was the best, followed by n95. i remember reading about it, n82 best cameraphone in 2007
I think the innovation is advance faster after nokia era, but in functionality and technology.
I had the N95 8GB also........what an amazing phone that was........
This phone looks totally usable now to be honest, I can only imagine how beastly it was back then.
5 MP camera! Not long ago, my selfie camera was 5 MP and those were decent photos.
@@jeff4362 for email, no.. tried that on my N86 and N93i, didnt work.. on my friend's E72 also.
@@blitzer25blitz62 Yeah that's because the Nokia email app connected to Nokia servers that have died years ago. You need to download and install Mailbox Creator on your device and then you can get IMAP email again.
@@fiddle_n also he signed it with Cingular, which was then bought out by AT&T
Try saying no to Steve Jobs.
Yeah this had symbian & apple was so basic
I remember the tagline: ”Nokia N95 - It’s what computers have become.”
That tagline is prophetic in a way.
Miss those days
N95 was the best in its time. Back then I was so happy. My father bought me one when I entered college.
Go figure.
This is exactly the kind of unique anecdote I love to see on episodes of this series. Thanks for sharing!

HMD should totally have released this new iteration! The kickstand & a slide in speaker would be amazing on those mid-range Nokia’s.

I've still got mine. It still works too.
And I've still got my Nokia N900 as well.
I still have a fully working purple n95 in my drawer! i bought it in 2011, and even though iphones (which had a more modern design) existed, i still felt like the n95 was new, even though it had a numeric keypad, it felt so modern but so nostalgic at the same time. i used as a backup phone until verizon shut down their 3g networks a few months ago. i really loved it, this phone will always have a soft spot in my heart
So many fond memories of this beast, actually the whole Nokia N Series, so many legendary, fun and crazy devices. I had the N90, N91 and the N82, I really miss them. I was surprised to see that the camera still does a decent job, both stills and video.
Hope you can bring more of them and also the legendary beast E90 Communicator, it will be fun to compare a foldable phone from the past to the current models. Oh and try to find the 8800 luxury series, these were amazing back in their day, although the s40 OS was horrible.
