Great review! I love this game to death, but I was able to see your point of view and agree with a lot of the things you were saying. And I'm so glad someone realizes the level design is some of the best in the series.
As a fan of this game, I extremely enjoyed this review. Instead of just writing it off as shit as most would, you highlighted its strengths while picking apart its glaring weaknesses, all while remaining generally positive. Great video, thank you.
I think the ring dash works better when you're in the air. Whenever it's on the ground I find myself only getting one ring but jumping in the air while lined up will work without a problem. That said great review overall.
+cjszero01 Ah thanks for the information! I did notice I never had a problem when doing the Light Dash airborne. Still weird, though. Haha. Thanks mate. :)
I know it's like a year old but it's probably because you end up picking up the few rings before doing it and other times it assumes you'll do it in motion and it must mess with the scripting of the dash somehow.
The ring dash never worked for me on ground, I first tried it in Hang Castle on Team Sonic but kept dying because I didn't think to jump, unfortunately now that I know how it works and that jumping fixes it I no longer have the game.
Ah Sonic Heroes. I very much have a Love/Hate relationship with this game. One one hand I appreciate the effort put into the levels, with it's variations and risk rewarding. I also liked the simple yet engaging team aspect, and when I'm kicking ass with all characters I have fun. On the other hand there are those days when the game decides it doesn't want to be fun and wants to frustrate me. Slippery controls and infrequent inconsistent glitches have led to many a demise, and those sloppy half-assed special stages combined ultimately hurts the trust factor I have with this game. Not bad tho.
I remember it took me 2 years to figure out that there was a final segment off screen at the story select screen. It only happened because I wanted to select chaotix and I kept the left button pressed instead of tapping it 3 times.
I honestly glad that I am starting to see good Sonic Heroes Reviews, thank you. The only 3d Sonic game I played Before Sonic Heroes was Sonic R. Let me tell ya, when I played it, it was like amazed by its colors. I never played it for the ranks. I just played it because it was really fun and had beautiful colors. I can't play this game anymore because I got no longer an Xbox. Althought I am thinking of buying it.
+Shadowtails Derol No problem, glad you liked this review. :) Sonic Heroes is definitely a fun and colorful game. I just wish it wasn't as buggy as it is, y'know?
22:55 XD Anyway, very good review. I've been watching a few of your videos and am gobsmacked you don't have more views! You've easily earned a sub from me. Good work!
It's nice to see someone giving justice to this underrated game. Sonic heroes always was my favourite! (At least from that day I played Sonic Adventura again after beating Sonic Heroes.)
Good review. I can't really say I disagree with any of the points you made. Personally, I liked the team concept but it wasn't very well executed. My biggest gripe is having to go through the exact same levels in 4 separate stories just to unlock the final story. That was a bit tedious. Especially when some of the stages are long. I hate the Team Chaotix stages in particular, they especially dragged on for me. And completely agree about the cheap deaths aspect. Damn bottomless pits everywhere like you said. Nice work!
My favorite team to play as was Team Chaotix, the reason being is the other teams only have Goal Rings, and while I'm fine with that it's good to have a change of pace. Team Dark and Team Chaotix both give you more difficulty, but while Team Dark has unfair difficulty curves constantly, Team Chaotix felt like it had the perfect difficulty for me alongside Team Sonic.
the cheesy dialogue wasn't so bad when I first got the game, but man, Sonic is at his worst with the power of friendship stuff. But you brought up a GREAT point with the sound mixing, it's done well and nobody is accidentally interrupting each other or the music isn't blaring so loud that you can't understand anyone. I am glad that someone reviewed this game and didn't blatantly hate it.
I must say, I dunno if it's true about Sonic Heroes on PS2, but if yes, that would explain why I never got to Last Story, nor even more then one 100% playthrough... by only with Team Rose, cuz the bugs and unprecise meddling on esp. Rail Canyon/Bullet Station and that Frog Forest 2 part acts just killed me so often where I sometimes ragequitted for reasons stated in your analysis AND for losing about 7-10+ lives just because of glitchfulness just lets me get angry at a such colorful promising game, I'm still happy at some memories of it, but these bugs/glitches are just too much, esp before ending a level. So congratz on everyone kicking this' game's butt!
Thank you for this review, Sonic Heroes is one of my favorite Sonic games. The style of the game is the best the series has been in 3D, and despite having multiple characters, all of them share the same fun gameplay style, and it all feels so "Sonic". I really wish they would give this formula another shot, because this game, with all it's flaws ironed out and better level design, is pretty much how I want a 3D Sonic game to be.
+Yxlarb & Bosniancheese Man, it's great to receive this comment from you! Haha. I know you've been looking forward to this one and it's finally here. I am glad the video has met your expectations!
+Retropolis Zone You addressed my biggest complaint with this game, the lack of differentiation from stoey to story in terms of level design! i hated that. As a kid in fact, I would try playing through the whole game and quit after the 2nd or 3rd story.
This review made me realize this game is kinda like a Sonic Advance CD/3D. Heavy emphasis on bottomless pits, classic-like design, and the need to use all characters to get the final level.
Great review man, good job! Heroes was one of my first 3D Sonic Games, had a lot of fun with it. I'd like to see you tackle another one of Sonic Team's hidden gems Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg.
+Mac Blackledge Thank you, sir. I'm glad to have been of good service. I know of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, though I've never played it. Perhaps one day I'll make a video on it, but I already got my plate full enough with other games to cover. Still, appreciate the suggestion and comment!
I know I'm late to this, but great review. My cousin gave me the PS2 version for Christmas, but I haven't played much of it due to my console breaking down. I think this review has definitely made me excited to play it and hoping I get a PS2 again soon.
Oh man, I forgot about all the cheap deaths, each one coming back to me when brought up. Even before going here from your Shadow the Hedgehog review, the little bit of Heroes footage shown there brought me pseudo-flashbacks of annoyance and dread. Despite the game's brokenness, however, it was still among my favorite video games when I was younger; I guess I loved the looks and feel enough to look past the flaws. With all that said, the death at 31:04 is pretty funny.
Sonic Heroes is definitely in my top 5 favorite Sonic games (especially after finishing it a few months back) but I can acknowledge that yes the game has some serious flaws and I feel that this review did an amazing job analyzing everything the game has to offer. Really great video.
On another note the fan boy deep inside me got a bit shook when you said that Cheese went missing instead of Chocola who was the actual Chao that went missing lol
Your dedication to in-depth analysis and hard press work of effort is truly a prodigy to behold. Seriously man, you're soooooo underrated and i'm ticked that your views barely match the quality of your videos.
Wow, what an awesome review - love the attention to detail! Haha, I always thought the PS2 was the buggiest version; that was the main reason I never got to the Last Story.
Part of why the PS2 version is ragged on are the graphics. The shadows are generic circles instead of being shaped, things like that. I've only played it for an hour, so I can't speak in terms of other things, but that one I have seen. I've always stuck to playing the Gamecube version just cause that's the controller of the 3 that I'm the most comfortable with.
I purposely waited until you returned before commenting on this review. If you ask me, this is one of the most detailedreviews of this game I've seen possibly triumphing even Johnny's in terms of in-depth analysis, and I can definetely relate to the various problems you encountered in this game as I also played this game alot back in 2003 for the Gamecube, such as the length of various stages overstaying their welcome, the slippery controls and collision detections like in Bingo Highway, and for how incredibly tedious a few of the Chaotix stages were. I purely focussed so much on how infuriating the Mystic Mansion bonus mission was that I completely forgot about how stressful their Bingo Highway bonus mission was. (Awkward camera angles and 1-try or restart for that A-rank on some of the chips on the pinball tables themselves.) But that aside, I honestly feel that the health bar mechanic was a alright addition for this game, as the combat for the most part isn't too tedious. Common egg pawn enemies can easily be defeated with a unison-homing attack while in speed formation unlevelled, and the weak points for the larger robots aren't too difficult to reveal to kill them more quickly. Only exception being that when the game locks you in a very small arena with these larger bosses where it becomes a struggle to not fall off from knockback by big enemies or getting mauled by multiple enemies, such as with the start of Lost Jungle for Team Sonic/Dark or the final parts of their enemy gauntlet boss stages in the creepy mansion world to call few instances right off the bat. The rail-switching was also a huge issue that dreaded Rail Canyon for me in the past, but I never knew that you're supposed to stop speeding momentarily and jump to the side for it to work properly. The game is definetely a underrated gem in terms of visuals and gameplay, since the high speed platforming and for the most part balanced combat sections definetely make it one of the far more entertaining 3D entries in the Sonic franchise that comes close to resembling the classic 2D games, but like you said, the fact that you have to replay the same stages 4 times in a row with minor differences just to unlock the true final boss in the game is just a terrible choice to artificially extend the game length, and collision detection could have been much better too. Props for this one, Michael. -Rick
This game i loved the second time , back in junior high when this came out i was turned off about it , but after getting the game the second time and trying to get 100% i ended up loving the game because of it's difficulty
Hey man keep up the good work I found you recently and have seen all yout reviews!!! I am wondering if you will ever review the classic Sonic series I would really like to see that.
This game ducking deserved a proper sequel that could’ve address the issues with the controls and 100% completion. That sequel would’ve been hailed as the best 3D sonic
Sonic hero’s is my favorite sonic game I love absolutely everything about it obviously there are some things I would change and don’t like but I more fun playing this game than any other sonic title
Nice review but to be honest I prefer Sonic Adventure over Heroes, I understand the flaws of how people see Adventure 1 and 2 but personally I didn't mind them. I do honestly think Sonic Adventure 1 felt more like a classic Sonic game in 3D more than Heroes in my book, despite their camera problems, and glitches. Heroes is just a strong love/hate relationship when I played it, Rail Canyon was a painful experience when I was younger. The fact that how slippy Sonic moves in companions to SA1 is just a downgrade, and the bits when enemies appear you might get hit if you were going fast. I do like Heroes for it's music and interesting levels ideas but that's all I could really say that I like about Heroes, the flaws with the controls, and the rails of how they work just made me felt disappointed. I wanted to like Heroes, it had a cool idea but it's so damn repetitive to play the same levels over and over again to get to the final boss of the game. Atleast in Sonic Adventure 1 had shorter stories with only a few levels in Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, and E102, and Sonic Adventure 2 had different locations so it felt fresh and different than how the character in Team Light, or Team Dark did.
Adventure fans aren't use to light-hearted kid friendly. But, i hope Genesis fans enjoyed it, Heroes was paying tribute to the Genesis fans and classics, showing Genesis fans that SEGA still cares about them and letting new kids join in on the fun.
I really want a Sonic Heroes 2 just focusing on Sonic Tails and Knuckles with a solid 15+ levels and good story. While the writing wasn't the best, I still love this game and its still fun to play to this day
The Xbox version is by far the best version (I have xbox, gamecube and pc versions). The controls are by far the most solid, although the problems you mention still exist, the characters respond far more promptly in my experience. Fantastic game though. I wish we'd had a proper follow up to it!
I've been asked a few times now actually, haha. I'm not making any promises as to when, but it won't be too long from now. And no I won't go for 300+ endings, lmao. Only expert mode. ;)
I love your videos there awesome! Would love another sonic review possibly sonic chronicles of if you prefer console games maybe sonic unleashed or even sonic boom
Great review! I really love this game and it is my favorite in the franchise but it is severely flawed. Lots of collision issues, control problems, some bad design choices here and there and it is very repetitive. It clearly wasn't polished enough. Still, i believe it translates best the Genesis/Mega Drive style into 3D.
I don't know if this works on the other versions, but I discovered that if you use the turbo button during the special stages at the same time that you jump grants you a boost of speed so great that you can practically grab every emerald in a matter of seconds... Like 3 seconds or less. Used to spam this when playing it on the PS2 to get all the emeralds right away
my oly issue of the game is some of the bugs that can happen and also sometimes the Buttery Shoes doesn't help at times Lol but I still don't mind the game and love the review.
I liked this game alright, but the best thing to come out of it were those awesome tracks in Sonic And Sega All Stars Racing. Like that Casino track. I'd go as far as to say they were some of my favorite tracks in any Mario Kart type game. Or Maybe I just like the way that game feels. I don't know what it is, but Mario Kart 8 just feels so slow to me.
I HATE Rail Canyon and Bingo Highway. Other then that, I remember playing through this game several times..sadly I had the PS2 game, and never got to experience the superior Gamecube version.
I know the game has one or two down sides but personally this is my favourite sonic game ever. I've been in love with it for basically my whole life and I think I always will be. Perhaps I'm bias here but I'll never understand people's hatred for this game. It's amazing.
Damn, you pinpoint everything that is good and bad even on the ones that I never thought about but I experienced it while playing. Also may I ask what kind of capture card you are using for console gameplay?
+MrGamer1992 Thanks a lot! Well I have to pinpoint everything with video lengths like this, right? ;) I use the AverMedia Live Gamer Portable. I record GameCube games from my Wii U over HDMI, though.
You should do a video on crash tag team racing vs Mario kart double dash. Crash tag team racing was sooooo much better IMO. But everyone always brings up Mario double dash which I still feel was severely over hyped
I played the PC and gamecube version at the same time and there is a big difference on how the special stages are programmed. Somehow the special stages in GC have different physics sonic is more slippery and the collision is somehow fucked. But the PC version has very bad scripted loops somehow in the PC version the loops don't have the speed lock the other versions have and especially in power plant you will be flying after a loop ends and you will fall. While the other versions slow you down automatically so you would not clip through the springs.
Honestly if Sega wasn't afraid back then to make a short game with only Team Sonic and stages that last 4 to 5 minutes at most, and took the extra unused time to polish it up (though I would like to point out that maybe I got lucky enough to not encounter even a quarter of all the technical issues as he did); then I have no doubt that this would be a MUCH better game and maybe even one the best 3D Sonic games far surpassing the Adventure games. Even after 100% the game and playing through Super Hard Mode I can still say that I honestly prefer this over the Adventure games. It's focus on a single, fun, game play style ensures me that I won't have to play what is essentially an entirely different game that I would never play otherwise. It's a formula that I wish Sega looked back on and made a direct sequel to because there's a great formula in there with lots of room for improvement, too bad they seem to be afraid of moving away from the Genesis games in terms of what Sonic games to mention about 90% of the time.
I know you've been trying to do this more and more as you put out more content, but you didn't provide much of a solution to the team gimmick feeling a bit shallow. This isn't bad, but allow me to propose one (even though this is almost 2 years old). I think one mechanic that would have made level design more interesting would be the ability to split your team up into groups for more of a small puzzle solving sorta vibe. An example of this would be needing a Fly character stay on a switch that's out of range for any other character to reach which would open a door for say a Power or Speed character to maybe break obstacles or cross a bottomless pit via the triangle jump to activate another switch or anything else you could think of to continue level progression. I know this is way late, but I just thought I'd add that in as I've been watching all your other videos and I really like how you structure them and try to provide both positive and negative criticism while suggesting ideas that would've made things more fluid in terms of gameplay, or would have increased replay value.
Yeah, I didn't put too much thought into that aspect of the review. All I noticed was that the character switching is a bit superficial in many ways. Your suggestion actually sounds pretty cool on how to flesh out the team gimmick. Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful comment and sorry for the late response!
Great review! I love this game to death, but I was able to see your point of view and agree with a lot of the things you were saying. And I'm so glad someone realizes the level design is some of the best in the series.

This channel is so incredibly underrated.
Benjamin Juge The amount of Sonic makes it very niche
I think the ring dash works better when you're in the air. Whenever it's on the ground I find myself only getting one ring but jumping in the air while lined up will work without a problem. That said great review overall.
+cjszero01 Ah thanks for the information! I did notice I never had a problem when doing the Light Dash airborne. Still weird, though. Haha.

I love Sonic Heroes, and in my opinion it is really underrated. It has some good replay value. I still have fun playing it to this day.
but y'know whats *really* underrated...
...the advance games ;-;
That's true, well I feel Advance 2 is way overrated (I hate that game) but yeah 1 and 3 are definitely underrated
@@BobbyHillHyperTails18 I agree. I love Advance 1 and 3 but hate 2

@@White_Recluse late on reply but homing attack pre the lockon visuals in sonic games have always been a gamble

Sonic Avenger and Sonic Avenger 2.... taking place during Antman's evil plan
Lol, I think it's funny. No worries.
nothing personal
I know. The comment originally made me laugh, haha. Thanks.
no its pronounced sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2
by the way Dude its pronounced Sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2 Remember that okay?
at least its a FULL 3D Sonic game that we all love

dead man Sonic Advance CD?

did you know Big the cat can fly watch darkspinesonic for the glitch.

I thought Power types are the slowest? At least, that's what I remember from getting a fly type and power type to run side by side in 2 player...

Yeah the PS2's graphics look a lot more jagged, there aren't as many effect and the framerate is merely 30 instead of 60. Also, slowdown sometimes! :D
And that game generation was when the graphic wars took over the over console wars, so that did nothing but chum the waters like nuts. lol
I like this channel style

+Jahleel Acevedo Thanks! Awesome to read you wanted to see them all! :D
Yes I will but I have no idea when. Got so many games I wanna look at! Haha.
How dare you not mention Metal Sonic characters he is by far the best character in the Sonic series
You 100% sonic heroes and shadow the hedgehog? You deserve my subscription sir, well done.
Sonic Heroes is my favorite game to date. But I really liked your review. It gave me a different perspective on this game.
Was Knuckles Chaotix not good?
How do I get the PC Version to play in 1080p? Also how did you get such good Gamecube and PS2 footage?
that glitch on Metropolis zone that happen to you on the PC happen to me multiple times talk about ruining the mood to go fast
I really want a Sonic Heroes 2 just focusing on Sonic Tails and Knuckles with a solid 15+ levels and good story. While the writing wasn't the best, I still love this game and its still fun to play to this day
If you love the concept but hate the game, you should try out the Sonic 2 Hack known as 'Sonic Classic Heroes'
The Xbox version is by far the best version (I have xbox, gamecube and pc versions). The controls are by far the most solid, although the problems you mention still exist, the characters respond far more promptly in my experience. Fantastic game though. I wish we'd had a proper follow up to it!
Great review! Really enjoyed it! When you gonna review Shadow the Hedgehog? 100% with all the 300+ endings please, hahaha! XD
I've been asked a few times now actually, haha. I'm not making any promises as to when, but it won't be too long from now. And no I won't go for 300+ endings, lmao. Only expert mode. ;)
i would buy sonic heroes if was a re-release for steam
Sonic Heroes was the last Sonic game that I purchased new. In retrospect, it feels like nice game to out on.
What's up with all the bird themed robots in this game
I love your videos there awesome! Would love another sonic review possibly sonic chronicles of if you prefer console games maybe sonic unleashed or even sonic boom
+Robin Hood I don't think I am returning to Sonic anytime soon, but when I do it will likely be with either Sonic Advance or Sonic Unleashed.
If I get a new ps2 i will get this game on the GameCube and see how I feal
I grew up with this game on xbox, and this game will always have special place in my heart 👍
Chocola not cheese
I agree my personal favorite is sonic heroes for the original GameCube/ps2/Xbox era
my oly issue of the game is some of the bugs that can happen and also sometimes the Buttery Shoes doesn't help at times Lol but I still don't mind the game and love the review.
The first time I ever played I actually only got As far as the as the Mansion area
Would love to see you review Shadow the Hedgehog.
Actually am working on two reviews mate, and Shadow the Hedgehog is one of them. :)
I don't really remember any framerate drops in the Xbox version. Maybe there were some, but I guess they were not important enough for me to remember.
what verison did you guys grow up with I grow up with ps2
...did you actually just call knuckles Chaotix *awful*
Yeah, I don't like that game at all.
Retropolis Zone
...but why ;~;
I have a review on that game. I explain why in that video.
I HATE Rail Canyon and Bingo Highway. Other then that, I remember playing through this game several times..sadly I had the PS2 game, and never got to experience the superior Gamecube version.
Roodge, the Knuckles clone in Sonic Advenger 2
I know the game has one or two down sides but personally this is my favourite sonic game ever. I've been in love with it for basically my whole life and I think I always will be. Perhaps I'm bias here but I'll never understand people's hatred for this game. It's amazing.
The PS2 port didn't really have these gameplay problems from what I remember.
you're so positive in this video
+5MB Because I feel there is a lot to like about this game. Though later on it's really not that positive...
+Retropolis Zone unlike those other reviewers that say "Big the F**king Cat!!!" or somwthing
5:29 SHADOW FUCKING DABBED!!!!
That bit of percussion at 29:30, is that from Sonic Heroes, or something else? It's so familiar but I cannot for the life of me figure out why.
It is from Sonic Heroes, yes. Look up the song ''Egg Hawk''. :)
I never played this game but it seems pretty mixed. Don’t know if I would love it or hate it.
Damn, you pinpoint everything that is good and bad even on the ones that I never thought about but I experienced it while playing.
Also may I ask what kind of capture card you are using for console gameplay?
+MrGamer1992 Thanks a lot! Well I have to pinpoint everything with video lengths like this, right? ;)
I use the AverMedia Live Gamer Portable. I record GameCube games from my Wii U over HDMI, though.
Retropolis Zone
Wait, you can play Gamecube games on the Wii U? O_O
*Tell me more plz*
+MrGamer1992 Search for a program called ''Nintendont'' and you'll find out from there.
Retropolis Zone
Thanks
5:28 CHAOS DAB!!!!
This game made me think the PS2 was less powerful than the GameCube when I was a kid.
5:29 shadow. DABBING? WTF
You should do a video on crash tag team racing vs Mario kart double dash. Crash tag team racing was sooooo much better IMO. But everyone always brings up Mario double dash which I still feel was severely over hyped
5 YEARS LATE SQUAD WHERE YOU AT?!?!?!???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
16:57 what was that?
I played the PC and gamecube version at the same time and there is a big difference on how the special stages are programmed. Somehow the special stages in GC have different physics sonic is more slippery and the collision is somehow fucked. But the PC version has very bad scripted loops somehow in the PC version the loops don't have the speed lock the other versions have and especially in power plant you will be flying after a loop ends and you will fall. While the other versions slow you down automatically so you would not clip through the springs.
Great review.
+totalexamination Appreciate the comment!
Sonic Jam was the first 3d sonic game
So shadow was dead
It's cool
both the mystic mansion songs were good
this is actually my first fave sonic game of all time cx
