(OLD) Sonic Forces - Sunset Heights Open World

- UPDATE: i decided to release most of my unfinished forces mods on github, which also includes this one. i don't recommend using this as a base for... anything really, but it's a neat curiosity: github.com/ecksdii/forces-arc...
This was basically me in 2019, messing around with terrainfbx and TagTools for a few hours until I got a result that wouldn't crash the game on boot. This was never going to be a proper mod/project, since a lot of these assets are mainly meant to be in the background, not to serve as actual playable areas.
If you want something that extends the original level layouts and actually works, then go play Sonic Forces Re-imagined.

I was messing around with the terrain files and using them as collision and I somehow got it working. I'm probably not going to release this due to a lot of problems, but anyway, enjoy what I've made so far! You can't tell me that Forces couldn't have an open world thing like Breath of the Wild where you run from town to wherever for a side/or main quest.
Sonic Team is TOO LAZY to do such a beautiful thing as this
@Kat Pow I respect your opinion, but you are in the minority, most people loved that game and it was game of the year. And most people would love an open world sonic game, so no, it would be a great idea.

@Kat Pow You might like it, but I enjoyed it more than OOT. Yes, I said it. And that wasn't based off of reviews. Feel free to have your own opinion on it, but not everyone has the same views. I loved it, you hated it, and there are people who just aren't interested.

Edit : Wow, this is massive !! What a waste of space, with a map that big, the level should have been longer.
Yeah, it would've been cool if they used all the geometry that they made :/ But this is interesting none the less.

1.33 if only forces did what unleashed did in cool edge. Running across large space of water in a destroyed city to get to the other side would have made this gameplay so awesome especially with hedgehog engines 2 water visuals. If only forces really was a massive game which people were hyped since generations.
It's pretty sad to know how SEGA could improve the game.
Sonic Forces had a lot of potential, but they wasted everything. I had fun playing it, but it got boring (and i played it just for a few days because the game was from my cousin) with the time.
Nice concept but the rest of the stage would actually needed to be modelled from scratch for this to work though.
With the survey they sent out and the restructuring, hopefully the next main sonic game would be great 🤞

I'm not really getting why people are acting like any of this could have actually been used for level design. Most of the background models are far too low quality to be used as anything other than background detail but even if that weren't an issue I just don't see how you could make any meaningful or interesting level design out of any of this. I get that most of the levels in Forces were lacking but the only real way to improve them would be to, like, actually make new level design instead of grabbing random background assets and sticking them together.
I agree that this can't be used for real level design because it originally wasn't meant to be used for anything in the levels. Also I think that, mostly, fans always praise any mod made for Forces, no matter how good or bad it is, calling it better than Sonic Team and stuff, and that kinda annoys me. This isn't worthy of being called "better than SEGA" because it's a really basic mod, just terrain used as collision and that's it.

Cool! I always thought an open-worlds could work in Sonic the Hedgehog, as long as he can still move fast (in this case BOOST) Great Job!

I was using a low end RFL mod to make the game run better on my PC, so the effects are intentional. Also, I actually really like the wireframe effect

This is incredible, and wonderful to watch. Watching Sonic run on the water was really calming for some reason. Could we get a video of Sonic running on the water for as long as he can without boosting, with the level in the distance? I feel like that would just be the most wonderful thing.

God to think this could’ve been real. Fill it up with enemies and things to do, this would’ve been amazing. Such potential wasted on time constraints 😞 and people saying this wouldn’t have worked, in its current state no, but given time and in fixing the terrain, it would’ve been perfect. When people say sonic shouldn’t be open world I strongly disagree. Sonic is the one character who would benefit most from open world. With a move set of boost and parkour like in lost world, with plenty of things to do, it could hands down be a fantastic game
If only the game was like this now that's a real 3D platform game of sonic

Ubisoft and Sega should work together on making an Open world Sonic game.
You should make this like a truly open world level, like add enemies, fix the modelling, mess with the textures to make them fully HD, add rings, and stuff into it then release it
If Sonic Frontiers Will adopt the Open World, I think they would fix or create de Mape as extensions of the acts in reverse order, like the Sonic Unleashed phases and acts but with the Hub Worlds conected with the acts in diferent visions, in a large scale, but with no direct conection with the actual boost phases. It would be like a map that you wont see the phases itself, but a giant map with Compatible elements, in puzzles, mini games, exploration and an possible create sections of plateform around the Islands. It's something inside the Character's point of vision of World, as Sonic Itself. Like Sonic and the Black Knight phases, but not only one Space for gameplay and then a giant map away with no interactive. Thanks for who make this video. It made me imagine thinks for now kkkkkk.

If only segateam had built the game around an open-ish world design. I mean the whole world was taken over & it always feels like your boxed in when the map makes it feel like you should be seeing more.

I want to make a video/thread about sonic forces physics, and how they arent that bad, but still how much they improved when comparing it to frontiers
(Having this as a large area to run around and make clips of that would help a lot (cause in forces stages is basically impossible to make a turn, and the ones that are , are scripted and the camera exist to help with that, is not the natural physics)

Why do they impact performance so much?
For example Sonic Frontiers on the Switch's got Cyberspace stages that almost look identical to the PS5 ones, but can't render the little blue electricity lines.
Like it can render huge worlds like this one in Forces, but not a tiny blue line that appears for a split second...
Or like the cutscene with Infinite and the Avatar.
The Switch can reder the whole Metropolis Zone with the same lighting as the PS4 when docked, but can't render the effect when infinite starts floating...

Funny how Sonic fans don’t seem to understand that all this was just Background decoration, something that all Boost Games have, and not something that could have actually been used in gameplay.

You know the song that plays in the Forces level Red Gate bridge before the Metal Sonic boss? It's that.
Maybe Sonic Forces was meant to be bigger hence the unnecessary collisions... Or cutscenes might have been taken around here... This is my theory.
Um, I made all the collision you see here. The vanilla stage has just the collision for the part of the stage you actually play.

@@ecksdii Also, have you tried out the glitch in Luminous Forest? On the 2nd ramp where Sonic says "I'll make sure all our work isn't in vain'', near the shortcut where those bees are, boost up the half-pipe, mid air boost and stomp. You will be OOB. Don't worry,there is collision with the platform you are standing on.

@@ecksdii yeah, A+Start talked about some glitches. Maybe you should start something like 'Glitch Collection' where you try out various glitches from Sonic and popular retro games.

Um, you don't. Sorry, but i probably won't release this as an actual level, since it was never meant to be that, plus there's basically no gameplay or goal or.. well anything interesting imo. Of course, you can try and mod the game yourself and get similar results to this.
When it's release ?
As I said in the description, I probably won't release this due to problems mostly with the collision itself, and more importantly: there is just no gameplay, no gimmicks, no nothing. Sure it may be fun for someone to just run around and explore the stage(hell i've done so myself, out of pure boredom), but it has no goal or anything to be considered a full level mod, so I'm sorry but I won't release it :/

This was my favorite area in the game and just seeing sonic run across the bridge in the background makes me wish it was part of the level. Ugh so much potential in this game wasted!
