This actually happened to me and I never jumped again. Like you, I deployed my chute at a high enough altitude to be able to correct TWO malfunctions, not just one. It saved my life! Most people only give enough time to correct one. Base jumpers and many others don't even give themselves enough time for one. This is a good lesson to every jumper - make your ride just a little bit shorter, or it may be your last!
I can't believe you were actually able to speak!!! My mouth/throat would have been too dry after a DOUBLE malfunction AND a calm and calculated recovery. Excellent composure, and execution of your emergency procedures, man!! I hope I never have to experience that!!
Pro tip: Use your wings and the relative wind from the canopy forward flight to rotate your body out of line twists. You'll get more torque than from a kick.
Nice shocktwists! As you said, body position was most probably the problem. I had same problem when I looked up to the canopy when it started to open after line stretch. I'm normally doing this during no-wingsuit skydives but in wingsuit I didn't keep my shoulders equal so I ended up with many linetwists spinning and back facing the ground. Kicked out of first maybe two twists but that was all. I didn't have RSL so my reserve was deployed clear after I recovered from cut away. Glad you made it!
I should have read the comments and read the intro before watching! I clicked on this from a sidebar, and being an old school military Para who used non-capewell fitted chutes I struggled to make sense of this-- I thought the guy had lost his senses! I could see the twists in the rigging lines and thought " why doesn't he pull the lift-webs and kick out of the twists- why is he pissing around with his jump-suit?" Then i saw that the webbed legs make it impossible to kick out! Well done buddy!
You're completely correct about the chest strap. It hadn't been an issue for me on those first jumps and no one had ever pointed it out as an issue. Nowadays I cinch it down to keep the rig tight to my torso. I also now fly a Sabre 150 for wingsuit jumps which has been great.
That was a beautiful display application of adrenaline without loss of composure. What an incredible feeling that must have been when it was happening. I've felt the feeling you had in this video before.
How calm you stayed through all that is very impressive and VERY inspiring, I was totally blown away how cool and composed you were! Good job man mad props!
Little tip dude ... when you have linetwists with a wingsuit, dont bother kicking, just stick one arm wing out, it will spin you 180, then you stick the other one out, for another 180, and keep on going until all the twists are done. use the drag to make you spin out of it and you'll be line-twist free in no time ! Cheers.
Nice job, I'm sure most non jumpers do not realize how perfect you were dealing with this situation. At no time did I see tunnel vision, but calm and well thought out response. Blue skies!
Wow! Very well done! I only have a 110 jumps and not sure if I could handle this situation so quick and perfect... Great thing he had enough altitude! Congrats!
Good job, just had my first malfunction while flying my wingsuit. Same cause, bad body position. I knew it on deployment...I could feel it twisting as it was trying to deploy. Good job.
@TLobSkydive 4) We all get line-twists and I found the best method to get out of them, providing your canopy is overhead and inflated and flying sweetly, is to use your arm-wings, (still all zipped up) open and close them one at a time to spin you around. You canopy is flying and will be creating forward movement which allows you to use your wings to spin around. Much much easier than kicking out of line twists. (I hope this makes sense? Its the best advice someone gave me once.)
You lived and walked away, even after the freebag bridle wrapped under your chin (with your handles as well!) and 2 sets of line twists. Good job. Screw the haters ....
I would think a wing loading of 1.3 is pushing it with a WS, I'm on a nice docile canopy with a 1.16 loading and whenever I get a bad twist, my canopy settles down, flies straight and I can kick out easy.
@TLobSkydive Oooo gotcha. I now jump a Spectre 150 with my suit. Sold it so now I am getting 2 of them. :) V4 and Phantom3. Enjoy the flights and Blue Skies!
If I may make a recommendation, when you spin up, use your arm wings. Just close your leg wings up so they are not catching any air and then pull both arms in, put one out at a time and figure out which one will unwind that line twist. I PROMISE you you'll be out of the line twists FAR, FAR faster, and your heart rate will not get nearly as high! Good job staying calm and clearing the reserve bridle. =)
@TLobSkydive Hey Buddy, firstly I'm glad it turned out sweetly for you in the end. Any landing you walk away from is a good landing.. I'm no expert but do have some wingsuit experience. Just a few things to look out for: 1) Try to be "still" after pulling and while the canopy is opening. Don't move around and distort your risers. You will see in one frame there is a huge difference between risers. that will cause line twist for sure. So pull, continue flying and wait for canopy to open.
a trick I learned is to get the line twists as far down the risers as you can. This increases the angle between the twist and your body, exerting more force to spin you the right way. Keeping the line twist up high does no good, cuz the canopy isn't gonna be rotated the right way just from that. I don't like RSL's or skyhooks, I've got a cypres. better for canopy collisions, wingsuit use and water landings.
One thing to clarify, it IS possible to kick out of line twists with the wing leg still zipped up. I had plenty of altitude so no big deal in this instance but if you're a wingsuiter and find yourself low in reserve line twists don't waste time unzipping...just start kicking!
It all depends on the canopy, when you start off youll have a canopy thats probaly over twice the size so its a lot slower, gives you more time to react and makes landings easier, i started skydiving last year, and will never give it up, its the greatest feeling in the world, give it a go and you wont look back. Blue skys
I'm no expert either, I've only done one jump but I got pretty bad twists on my main. No drama, just kicked round until it came straight. We were told NOT to touch the brake toggles until the lines were untwisted as it'd make the chute malfunction. So I guess if you can't untwist it and you're already on your reserve then you just have to ride it out. At least you'd have a big square chute over your head, that's the most important thing!
I had a canopy malfunction once and it scared the hell out of me. Fortunately I had a safe landing. But It was sooooo close, that I never jumped again. If I had a double like this, I definitely would never jump again. I truly miss it and still have dreams that I am jumping, but life is too precisous and too short.
@long2jump I was jumping my nitron 135 because that's what I had. Now I've got a Sabre 150 w/ extended bridle which is treating me great. No leg cutaways on the suit in this video or the suit I fly nowadays.
@TLobSkydive 5) I hope you are using a 9ft Bridal (from pin to PC). This helps to get the PC into clean air and avoid bouncing around in the burble which could cause the d-bag to get spun up and hence line-twists. Along the same lines; concentrate on a nice strong PC throw-out into clean air. Don't just "pop it out" I hope you are not too freaked out and are getting back into your wingsuit. It's the best thing ever. All the best mate.
Whew, glad you made it out okay!! When I have line twists I'll stick a wing out and use the wind to help me untwist along with the kicks of course. It seems to work well just in case you have another event like this, thought it might help considering once you're to the reserve and still in line twists anything helps! lol Stick it out and use the wind to spin you then close and switch to the other arm as your direction changes. Blue Skies
Another trick that you might try for the line twists, I use this when ever I get spun up in my WS's. Us your arm wing!! Unless the canopy is diving crazy hard and MUST be chopped, extend one arm out while keeping your legs and other arm wing closed. If it winds into the twist, close that arm and open the other arm. I PROMISE, you'll be out of those twists MUCH, MUCH faster than you'll ever get out of them by kicking!!! Just food for thought. :) Good job BTW clearing the reserve.
@TLobSkydive there is a 6 inch difference in the length of your risers at 3:03 , this rights itself instantly at 3:07 . This would suggest to me your riser cover didnt open at first . Im not familiar with the Infinity but if they are double riser covers and the riser is placed under the first flap or shifts with movement , this can cause the riser cover to lock . Nice work getting that reserve bridle cleared !
In fact, I practice mountain bike, scuba diving, and other sports not really considered as "safe" ones (and i comute every day by car, by the way ) . But falling from a plane at about 200km/h , waiting for a happy end, crossing fingers and hoping that at least one of the two parachutes is going to be opened properly, sometimes scares me. If both of them don´t open. On the other hand, it also fascinates me when you fly with your wind suit as you were a bird. That sensation must be awesome.
@mccordia The best way to start working out of the line twists is to "bicycle kick". With the leg wing still attached there isn't really a good way to kick around.
good story actually, found the cutaway the day off. A few months later at our local boogie another jumper found the reserve handle and it now hangs from my apartment wall:)
Wingsuits are notorious for line twists on opening, slight difference in leg/arm position can cause a spin which induces line twists. Instead of spending time dealing with line twists below the slider, which were still spinning up, he cut it away and pulled reserve. BUT!!!! the reserve pilot chute went in front of his neck and behind his hand. Lucky it didnt open like that would have been bad news. Any jump you can walk away from is a good jump and a learning experience. +1 good sir
Any other good videos about line twists? Had one recently on my main. Did a cutaway and got a nice reserve. It got me thinking: "what would I do if I had 2 severe line twists".
I'm watching this with Wimbledon on in the background and the commentator's just said something about Del Potro remaining calm under pressure. Calm under pressure? Yeah, making sure you hit that little ball over the net must be really stressful compared to having to cut away and hope your reserve deploys ok.....
funny to see how you were holding on to that cutaway pad, even while clearing the RESERVE bridle!! but you eventually had to drop it when unzipping the leg :P anyway great save and thanks for sharing! :-) maybe consider disconnecting the RSL next time ;-)
@Juancarx new equipment not only has skyhook, The main canopy is 170 feet 7 cells Storm, I do not believe in the bells too small to practice wingsuit, I with 170 can record tandems, you can wear a helmet with video and photos on your head, and open the parachute safely, landing soon, soft landing, and above all enjoy the wingsuit, and is more permissive with errors and reserve canopy is 170 feet, and occupies a space of 150 feet

@adaseth lol he unzipped his suit so he could kick his legs while he pulled the rains apart to untwist the lines. a twisted chute in AirBourne operations is very common and thats exactly how we were taught to untwist them. and yes it works.
Additionally, once you were under your reserve, the arm wing trick would have had you out of those twists in 1/4 of the time you spent kicking out. In any case, good reason to be pulling high. Nice job for 9 WS jumps. It will get easier and those types of line twists will become a LOT less, :)
FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!, I NEVER IN MY LIFE THOUGHT I WOULD SEE SOMEONE DOING EXACTLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH A DOUBLE MALFUNCTION, YOU HAVE BALLS THE SIZE OF MY HEAD!!!!!!! YOU ROCK !!
I would have to say that training and a hell of alot of luck was on your side that day my friend. We roll the dice every time we jump but I wouldn't have it any other way :-)). You should have bought a lotto ticket lol.
@TLobSkydive With a legstance that wide, shouldnt be an issue to kick em out with the legwing still on. Unless you're flying an old classic or Gti, most newer suits dont really need the legs unzipped to kick out a few twists in my experience....but regardless...whatever works..and this worked ;)
@GodsWilly It's an Infinity...tuck-tab riser covers. I don't really see what you're seeing at 3:03 but maybe that contributed to the spin up. Honestly, body position is in all probability the cause. When I initiated my deployment sequence I screwed up by collapsing my wings unevenly and dropping my shoulder. Even before anything started coming out I was thinking, "this'll be interesting"
2 things: keep the leg wing closed on deployment until you have a good canopy! That includes the EPs. The line twist on the reserve was very avoidable. Why did you cut away so fast? Have you been especially low? Why not trying to work on the main's malfunction? (and remember to keep the legwing closed)
Dude nice job staying composed!!!!!!! 2 questions, why such a small canopy for the wing suit, and how can you jump a wing suit with you chest strap so loose? If I don't crank down my chest strap at least one shoulder tries to come off when I pull and my rig was built to fit me? Seriously though sweet save, I bet when you saw that reserve twist up you thought "really, again"
@TrackStar828 its about 60 bones for the reserve re-pack, and if you don't find your main canopy on the ground later its going to be a couple grand for a new one. I went looking for a tandem cutaway in the woods the other day, they can be a bitch to locate.
You stopped flying the wingsuit the moment you deployed your pilot shute and to add to your problems... you grabbed the left riser ONLY. Your body is not symmetrical on deployment. This is why you are running into this problem. You need to fly through the deployment. You can also use your Wing to get yourself out of a line twist by holding one wing open and the other one closed depending which way you are twisting. I fly an X-Bird and I can still kick out of line twists.
This actually happened to me and I never jumped again. Like you, I deployed my chute at a high enough altitude to be able to correct TWO malfunctions, not just one. It saved my life! Pro tip: Use your wings and the relative wind from the canopy forward flight to rotate your body out of line twists. You'll get more torque than from a kick.
Holding on to your handles while your reserve chute is wrapped around your neck... Priceless!! :))
I was amazed with your calmness, after the storm passed the "Hurrah!" scream! Nice job.. and bad luck..!
Safe landings!
Nice shocktwists! As you said, body position was most probably the problem. I had same problem when I looked up to the canopy when it started to open after line stretch. I forgot to add that I'm glad you made it out of that one. Great example of not freezing up and reacting without panicking.
Nicely done! I have no clue about skydiving...but you seemed calm and calculated. Hats off to you sir!!
What a way to keep your wits and not panic. Great emergency action
Nice job, I'm sure most non jumpers do not realize how perfect you were dealing with this situation. At no time did I see tunnel vision, but calm and well thought out response. Blue skies!
lol what's more amazing is you still managed to hang on to your handles the whole time!!!
Well done! Great recovery from the bridle and the line twists! That reserve really spun itself up! Beer!
Outstanding and calm recovery. Well done on keeping your head. Blue skies forever.
Man that are alot of twists! Glad you had a safe landing. That reserve bridle hung up under your chin sounds pretty scary!
Dude that's inspirational way to get yourself out of a bad situation sir
great reaction to that pilot chute in tow. man i would have a heart attack. Nice jump! Blue skies my friend
Wow! Very well done! I only have a 110 jumps and not sure if I could handle this situation so quick and perfect... Great thing he had enough altitude! Congrats!
That is the worse reserve pack ever. Rigger needs to buy you a bottle of your favorite refreshment this time.
2 Questions; Why not try to kick out the 1st malfunction before opening the reserve ? And 2nd why skydive in sandals ?
Good job, just had my first malfunction while flying my wingsuit. Same cause, bad body position. I knew it on deployment...I could feel it twisting as it was trying to deploy. Good job.
That is without a doubt the most scary thing I have ever seen!!
Well done fella!!
Bravo. You just say "no it isn't" and thus have magically reguted my argument. What a joke.
Suddenly I don't feel so bad about wingsuiting without an RSL.
I would have been swearing a lot. Such calm under pressure!
looks like the endcells collapsed on the main. well done and good thinking of kicking out of that one.

I could tell you were swinging your legs to get unwound - That happened to me on my very first jump - Nice recover.

'twas indeed nicely done ! ... Just wondered why the initial twist wasn't tackled on opening at 4,000ft.(1:14) ?
@long2jump
I was jumping my nitron 135 because that's what I had. Now I've got a Sabre 150 w/ extended bridle which is treating me great. No leg cutaways on the suit in this video or the suit I fly nowadays.

You did nice work with the linetwist man
@mccordia The best way to start working out of the line twists is to "bicycle kick". With the leg wing still attached there isn't really a good way to kick around.
Way to keep fighting the twist. Being able to walk away is the most important part....
good story actually, found the cutaway the day off. A few months later at our local boogie another jumper found the reserve handle and it now hangs from my apartment wall:)
Can some experienced person explain me what exactly happened, and furthermore what he could have done to avoid it ? What could have happened ?

Well done! Great job pulling high enough that you could recover too!
Great recovery. Glad you made it down safe
wow, totally ice cool untill the danger was over. I guess you are a very experienced diver, impressive!
Nice, you kept the cutaway handle
Any other good videos about line twists?
Had one recently on my main. Did a cutaway and got a nice reserve. It got me thinking: "what would I do if I had 2 severe line twists".
I'm watching this with Wimbledon on in the background and the commentator's just said something about Del Potro remaining calm under pressure. Calm under pressure? Yeah, making sure you hit that little ball over the net must be really stressful compared to having to cut away and hope your reserve deploys ok.....
It looked like it was just line twists and you were coming out of the turn...better safe than dead.
Omg it must've been so scary ! Thanks God that it ended safely !
the definition of 'kicking out some twists' :)
funny to see how you were holding on to that cutaway pad, even while clearing the RESERVE bridle!! but you eventually had to drop it when unzipping the leg :P anyway great save and thanks for sharing! :-) maybe consider disconnecting the RSL next time ;-)
How do you practice stuff like this... Glad you landed safely!
Did you undo the leg zip to let some poo fall out? Brown trousers moment there!!
What caused the first linetwists on main/? either way my man was ready for both good work!!!!
This is insane i jus went sky diving couple weeks ago but damn. Glad your alright man
@Juancarx new equipment not only has skyhook,
The main canopy is 170 feet 7 cells Storm, I do not believe in the bells too small to practice wingsuit, I with 170 can record tandems, you can wear a helmet with video and photos on your head, and open the parachute safely, landing soon, soft landing, and above all enjoy the wingsuit, and is more permissive with errors
and reserve canopy is 170 feet, and occupies a space of 150 feet
well done brother, that was very skillfully handled. Blue Skies
There are several skydiving teams around the world that do jump 10 or more times every day and have been doing it for several years, and continue to jump.
@adaseth lol he unzipped his suit so he could kick his legs while he pulled the rains apart to untwist the lines. a twisted chute in AirBourne operations is very common and thats exactly how we were taught to untwist them. and yes it works.
holy shit but nice work, what was the reason for the double failure?
Meu amigo que situação. Falha de dobragem?
i dont use RSL or skyhook for this kind of reasons, especially when wingsuiting, get stable first then pull reserve.
Thanks! I hope you consider undertaking the experience of a lifetime
You're right. Meant to say average number of skydiving hours per one fatality compared to the average number of bike riding hours per one fatality.
Mate! scary stuff-have a look at 1:14 it looks like your right riser cover didn't release causing the line twists.
YOU ROCK !!
Icarus, I'm glad you are okay!
I would have to say that training and a hell of alot of luck was on your side that day my friend. We roll the dice every time we jump but I wouldn't have it any other way :-)). You should have bought a lotto ticket lol.

Unless you're flying an old classic or Gti, most newer suits dont really need the legs unzipped to kick out a few twists in my experience....but regardless...whatever works..and this worked ;)
wait, howcome you couldnt spin out of the 1st malfunction?
Don't get why he didn't kick out of his line twist on his main? Or even make an attempt?

How much beer did you end up buying?? Glad you made it.
Because even when things look bad in extremely unlikely circumstances there is still a high probability of survival?
I handled that well. Love how u kept it cool on the reserve
@TrackStar828 its about 60 bones for the reserve re-pack, and if you don't find your main canopy on the ground later its going to be a couple grand for a new one. I went looking for a tandem cutaway in the woods the other day, they can be a bitch to locate.
The most dangerous part about skydiving is the drive to and from the dropzone.
RSL did work. You can see the bridle fly in front of his chest before he pulls the handle.
it looks like the first malfuntion was caused because you went about 30 egrees off heading when you pulled. thatd do it on a small canopy
