The race to the moon forced the development of technologies that benefit us all today. I think Elon is looking to repeat that and force the development of better rockets, life support systems and a lot of automated technologies. Imagine if he were to combine all of his knowledge and companies to work on this. Neuralink chips embedded in astronauts to work efficiently with various technologies such as Optimus robots. Boring company tunnelling machines to create underground habitats, storage facilities and perhaps mining capabilities. The robots themselves would have to establish the foundation of the colony before humans could go there. Have a Starlink-like constellation around Mars to provide communication and maybe navigation and weather tracking. All of these technologies would have to be advanced enough to pull this off but in the process of improving them, they become much better, faster down here on Earth. You need a goal to really make advances, otherwise progress is slow, in tiny increments. Just look at SpaceX, Tesla, Starlink, etc. People are not used to it and so are skeptical towards the ideas, but he makes things happen and improves on them. But perhaps more importantly, he generally creates technology at the lowest cost possible. So you can't look at what it cost NASA to do something and say that is what it will cost SpaceX. Can you say Artemis? So if Elon creates the technologies that would actually keep people alive on an inhospitable planet, I imagine that just might be what saves us here on Earth because we are just so hopeless in changing our ways. It looks like we can't stop wrecking our environment even though we know we are doing it. We're also one big solar flare away, among other things, from losing our atmosphere. If Elon has a plan and the will, I think he should just do it. It's easy to be a nay-sayer. Many of them thought that automobiles would never replace the horse. Reusable rockets on the cheap, laughable. Electric cars are for golf courses. Right. Sorry for getting carried away but thanks for the opportunity.

Brian, I think there are much WORSE things to waste one's money on, no? Go Elon just dont expect taxpayers to divert THEIR money to such a cause.. Otherwise the technological spin offs alone will be globally beneficial to our species, AND our shared future..Peace.

The great Dr. Tyson is a genius. He once commented on something after he said that made so much sense. He claimed that Musk among other say we need to reconstruct life on Mars to save humanity. Degrasee says that if you have the technology. teraform Mars. Why if we do why wouldn't you reteraform earth. Easier & why couldn't we do it if we have technology teraform . Make sense . Why find another planet.

Completely off topic, but I just read this article that describes a paper that proposes that dark energy doesn't exist, and that the accelerated expansion of the universe is an illusion caused by gravity. Also that the expansion is not necessarily uniform. It was fascinating and I was wondering if you've heard anything about it, if its worth thinking about at all, and if true, what would the cocnclusions could we draw?

Sounds interesting indeed. I think I know where they are headed with such a title, but let me give you a more intuitive example of how observed cosmic redshift of furthest galaxies can indeed be a mere optical illusion: Suppose we could shrink ourselves to subatomic sizes and stand on the core of an atom looking outward. What would we see? Well, we would have the quantized electron orbits around the core high above us and for as far as the eye could see. As per known atomic setup, these electron orbits are measured in eV’s. Very high energy orbits close by, quickly dropping off the further out the atom bound electrons are from the core. We also know there is motion between these electron orbits in so called ‘quantum leaps’ where electrons move instantaneous between the different eV orbits, under the emittance of a photon. The photon carries the energy of the eV potential difference between the two electron orbits involved. That means that motion close by the atomic core involves the emittance of very high energy (blueish) photons, whereas motion far out will cause low energy (reddish) photons to be emitted. So how would our eyes now see these motions, from the perspective of the atomic core? Well, we would say the motion of furthest electrons is obviously redshifted and we would WRONGLY assume this was a redshift caused by apparent higher speed of outer electrons. WRONG! The speed is no different, we only see a ‘redshift’ because there is motion in the E field further away.
So now back to our macroworld again. We would experience incoming cosmic photons that cross the fabric of our galaxy as redshifted if they similarly cross a strong E potential relative to the core of our galaxy. What constitutes as further distance from our ST perspective, is represented as redshifted from and ‘energy as the grid’ perspective. I may remind all of you that both voyager spacecraft did encounter an unexpected stark increase of such galactic E field charge as they crossed the heliosphere. So there IS and observed element of E field drop off towards the outer galactic border. As such the subatomic setup appears to re-iterate in the galactic fabric setup, which would perfectly explain cosmic redshift without the need for an external doppler effect, for which illusive dark energy was invented by humans.

You engaged with that excitement, and I could see how much that meant to Neil. A lot of the time you have big names in science on, and because of your interest and empathy toward them, they really want to share their ideas and work with you and the audience. It makes me think how we're all kids hoping someone will ask us about the things we're interested in. Wow what a great podcast to listen to early Christmas morning;like a wonderful unexpected present to open!
Just an aside: I was a Liberal Arts Major in French Language and Literature. One Christmas party my husband and I went to one of the sons of this family was sitting there and introduced to us and said he is at Cern??? I at the time didn't know what that was only a connection that it was bordering FRANCE! I couldn't wait to ask him about speaking French. Well long short we made a connection! I immediately wanted to now all about the Higgs! He was there that July when they discovered it at Cern. He is a scholar and graduated from University of Pennsylvania post graduate doctorate program and I am always fascinated by this topic and also about Physics which is way out of my league.

And here i thought that was *already debunked,* and that it had been proven that, The *Vikings, were the first* to the New World? (The people that crossed over on the Beringia Land Bridge excepted of course), are *Vikings* not considered to be European?

I really think that we should focus on what it is that holds the earth together. What is in the centre that is so powerful that it attracts matter into an almost perfect ball, that is alive! All we know is that matter is very strong. What if a tiny minute piece of that hole is not strong enough to maintain its position in the said black hole and fly off in its own orbit, amassing space matter, eventually forming an orb.?

A self-sustaining city on Mars with a million people is not feasible from an economic standpoint. The only individuals who could financially support this are billionaires. For them, a trip to Mars might be an exotic experience, but it is unlikely they would want to stay there permanently or for an extended period. No matter how luxurious it is, you’re still a bird in a cage. For ordinary people, Musk will never be able to make this profitable.
A more logical scenario is an expensive hotel, complemented by some research facilities and mining operations. This would mean the focus would primarily be on robots, with only a potential hotel catering to short-term stays for humans.
Mining and the exploration of our solar system will primarily be carried out by drones and robots. This is economically viable, involves much lower insurance costs, and allows for 24/7 efficiency.

Not even wrong about going to Mars. Of course there's an economic reward from going to Mars. It's the continuing transfer of wealth from taxpayers TO ELON. It doesn't matter if everybody else loses, as long as Elon wins.

1h:20min. Argument about a trans woman fighting a man: the tw is a man who maybe didn't make the transition yet and even if he did it he should not fight neither with women or men with other trans women. The same thing should/has to be the other way around: trans man(woman who transition to man) should fight /compete with other tm. They have to make categories for them but not put them in the same category with men or women. Do not wanna say about the other ones who they believe that they are animals (sorry couldn't find the right word).
