    Thanks so much! I was worried about what the hardback would look like without a jacket. Yes, I like them to answer your question, they make a great bookmark! But now, I'm going to just order a case laminate.

      The easiest way to start is with offering a paperback through KDP. Even though I've got a paperback set up with IngramSpark, I always offer one through KDP as well, simply because you end up pocketing more that way. (Sale of a KDP paperback through Amazon gives you a higher net royalty vs sale of an IngramSpark paperback through Amazon, thanks to lower print costs as well as not having to pay IngramSpark their 15% cut for distribution.) But it's worth going through IngramSpark in SOME way to get their wide distribution on your print format-whether you go direct with them or through D2D.
      IngramSpark's user interface is honestly super confusing when you go through it the first time, so if you are nervous with getting started AND you plan to offer a standard trim size AND you don't particularly care about offering hardcovers with dust jackets, then it might be worth it for you to go through the D2D print beta.
      D2D will take a cut (not sure how much, might be 10% or something like that) for being the middle man, but they put way more thought into their user interface compared to IngramSpark and their customer service is on a different plane of existence. They also WON'T charge a set up fee, and will cover 1 free revision every 90 days for EACH title: www.draft2digital.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-d2d-print/

    wowowwoah this was very informative. i honestly think i will do local printing tho, although i totally see why the distribution would be a headache. I'm OK with dust jackets, but only really like them if they have a nice cover which is different to the book's cover

    • @PaperTigerProductions
      @PaperTigerProductions  Рік тому +1

      Distribution is less of a headache within the US, I think, which has media mail that is awesome and cheap. Distribution from Australia just...sucks 😂
      I wish I had had the foresight to ask for the cover art to be designed in a way where you can just kind of turn off a few layers to get a good looking hardcover underneath so that the dust jacket and case laminate are slightly different...

  • @jchartcarver5795

    I've ALWAYS had issues with their dust jacket spine alignment! For my last order it was the last straw, so I sent a complaint with a photo showing how bad it was and they were dicks about it. Told me it wasn't considered a bad thing. The fact is, it's hard to try to the realign the dust jacket because the paper is already trained to be in that particular fold. Maybe I should switch to Amazon...

      No dust jackets on KDP hardcovers unfortunately, but I've been hearing things about Book Vault. 👀

  • @3dchick
    @3dchick Рік тому

    I don't care for dust jackets personally, but old-school readers often consider them a sign of "legitimacy". I'd probably do them on a hard cover serious history book, for example, but skip them for genre fiction, unless it's a special run for promo or something. Another fantastic video! Thank you! ☺️

    • @PaperTigerProductions
      @PaperTigerProductions  Рік тому +2

      That perceived legitimacy thing is really the only reason I did one even though I personally hate them. I agree that it makes sense to skip them for genre fiction, so the next series is definitely not getting any! I reckon people would prefer interior illustrations, or foiling, or something else even for a special limited edition.

    • @3dchick
      @3dchick Рік тому

      @@PaperTigerProductions Yeah! Interior illustrations are my personal favorite, but yes, those and other "goodies" are probably more worthwhile for us.

    Dust jacket; that thing I take of the book the moment I start reading and which then gets dented or lost as I read the book... I don't like them or see the point of them, and I much prefer just a laminated cover instead. Then again, I'm not a hard-cover reader, so I'm probably not the target audience.
    How does the price compare to Amazon hard-covers? Though I guess it matters a bit less with hard-covers, price is an issue with POD. I've found it leads to expensive books, and it feels like it pushes many readers to ebooks.
    The maps do look gorgeous. And I can see the appeal of having the colored end-papers for some. Though it could be a nice feature for a luxurious kickstarter exclusive hardcover instead. If you've got a good sized fan-base then there definitely is a demand for that kind of thing.

    • @PaperTigerProductions
      @PaperTigerProductions  Рік тому

      Grr...so KDP hardcovers annoy me for a different reason: they're only available in the US and EU, so if you're ordering from anywhere else, including AU and UK, you have to get them shipped from the US. That was one of the other reasons why I didn't go with getting hardcovers from KDP.
      Thanks for reminding me about this as a point of comparison though! The TL;DR of it is KDP hardcovers (sans dust jacket) work out to be cheaper if you're based in the US or EU, which are the only KDP print locations that will do hardcovers. I've gone and put some extra details in the community post here: ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBY-GJsr-xidNdJtKkrS3gG2-PXs_Prju
      POD print is just...expensive generally. That said, I think there is value in offering a POD hardcover from a pricing perspective to set a higher anchor, especially with how the Amazon storefront displays the ebook price (though you could argue having a paperback already does this effectively enough).
      I've not got the detailed pricing from my local printer yet, but I suspect the more significant cost of doing endpapers is not so much on the printer side, but more on commissioning the illustration from the artist. But hey, if I'm not doing dust jackets, then it's just me moving part of the budget from one line to another!

    • @roderickhuizing4651
      @roderickhuizing4651 Рік тому

      @@PaperTigerProductions The number of print locations definitely makes sense. It's actually one of the reasons I went wide with my ebook. Coming from a non-Amazon country, I wanted to have my book available in as many places as possible.
      The hardcover quality seems to be comparable to the paperback quality. It does have the same anoying split in the middle. Though from what I've heard with POD you're often depending on the exact printer your book is made by, how well it's been maintained, how much ink it has left etc. Which does make it a bit of a lotery.
      Does the price of your local printer change a lot if you order larger quantities? I've heard that offset printing really comes into its own in terms of price once you go over something like 1.000 copies. (Which is way to many for me to order at once). It becomes significantly cheaper after that. The setup costs seem to be much higher, while the per unit costs are a lot lower.

    • @PaperTigerProductions
      @PaperTigerProductions  Рік тому

      @@roderickhuizing4651 so my local printer does digital offset printing rather than traditional offset printing with the plates and stuff, so the setup cost isn't too bad. Economies of scale kick in very noticeable at 12, 20, 50 copies, with 500 copies being roughly 1/3 the unit cost of doing 12 copies. Overseas offset printers in Taiwan or China can do them even cheaper, with minimum order quantities starting at 100 or 500 units usually, though I have seen as low as 50 too.
      If I could solve distribution, I would spend more on offset printing. Unfortunately it's pretty hard to compete with Amazon shipping. You'd have to do FBA to take advantage of their network and they charge you out the wazoo for it, so your net gain ends up being close to zero.

    Do you know anyone that makes REAL hardbacks? The cheapest quote I got is $5,000 for 10 books!

    • @PaperTigerProductions
      @PaperTigerProductions  3 місяці тому

      There's quite a few places around now that will do hardcovers in small runs. BookVault seems to be the most popular option after IngramSpark (they are UK-based though just opened a US-based facility which I've heard is not as consistent as the UK one), then 48 Hour Books (they're US-based and I'm not sure if they ship internationally) and Lulu. But $5,000 for 10 books sounds...off, unless you're doing every page in full color on ultra premium paper and it's a LONG book with a large/unusual trim size.
