After you make the painful decision, and stick with one of these methods for years, it's great to be reminded......JUST HOW SHITTY they really are. Re: KDP and IS. Such a great video!!
I definitely needed this video, Deborah! Along the same lines as Anita's "Humorous Book Creation Checklist" both useful, but also colored with that familiar snark we know and love 😘🙌🏼
I have never seen a more confusing consumer interface for anything than the mess cobbled together by Walmart and Kobo as some kind of strange challenge to Amazon. I honestly figured they'd have pulled the plug on it by now, but, nope, it is still there. And I defy anyone to find anything at all using it. Discoverability? What's that? With competition like this, Amazon doesn't need to fear much. One of those things that must have sounded like a good idea in theory but which is an utter mess in practice.
🤣 Amen! It's really bizarre and just goes to show that just because you have expertise in brick and mortar retail, it doesn't necessarily mean you can translate that over to e-commerce.
This was extremely helpful and informative as I am looking to self publish soon... thank you so much.
You're very welcome Joe! I'm glad this was helpful to you!
This gave me a great idea. Thank you.
Well now you've intrigued me! What's the idea?
Amazing video !
Appreciate the thoroughness of your videos. Really refreshing. 🙏
Thank you! I'm glad you found it useful 😊
I just found your channel and love it! I'm a small self-pubbed author and this is all great stuff
Hey Jakob, welcome! Glad to have you here 😊
Banks in Australia and New Zealand don't work well with Amazon or PayPal. You should make a video about Self publishing in Oceania.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have a think about the best way to do it. I haven't had too much of an issue with getting paid into an AU bank account from KDP or PayPal so far-the worst part is finding a bank account that won't keep hitting you with foreign currency fees for every deposit. Right now I use HSBC-they have an offering called the "Everyday Global Account" which allows you to hold multiple foreign currencies and that's been pretty good.
I'm confused by seeing Delilah on your screenshots but Deborah on your channel...how do you prefer to be addressed? 😊
😂You know I did not even think of the potential confusion from that! Delilah is a pen name, Deborah's the real name.
@@PaperTigerProductions Aha! Cool deal :)
I am very intrigued about the WordPress eCommerce store but how do I print and ship? Great video though, best so far!
Thank you! Printing and shipping is the biggest problem to solve for running your own direct e-store. What I do is dropship unsigned copies from either KDP or IngramSpark (you buy these as author copies and get Amazon or IS to ship to the purchaser's mailing address for you). Signed copies I mail out myself and I replenish whenever I run a bit low.
So if you we’re starting all over which platform would you just to focus and build on? I have two coloring books ready to be uploaded and working on illustrating my first children’s book and not sure what platform to go with? I was thinking about KDP book seeing other comments about getting accounts shut down for no valid reason has me contemplating. Just seeing which platform you would recommend for a newbie?
If you're doing coloring books, I suspect the easiest option will be KDP, because of IngramSpark's Catalogue Integrity Guidelines (www.ingramspark.com/blog/ingramsparks-catalog-integrity-announcement). Coloring books are a bit of a grey area since they're not exactly low content books in the same way as journals, etc. It also depends on where your target customers are. It's worth noting that although IngramSpark's wide distribution means you can into bookstores, you still need to do the legwork to generate the demand yourself, because no bookstore is going to order your books on a whim.
For a children's book though, I'd set up on both KDP and IngramSpark since they are mostly read in print. Hardcovers are popular for younger kids due to being more robust but KDP has a limited range of trim sizes for those and they don't really work with kids books, so for hardcovers you need to go with IngramSpark. For paperbacks, you can do either, but I always recommend going wide because why limit yourself?
@@PaperTigerProductions Excellent advice thank so much
@@HowToVideosUnlimited Any time 😊I wish you good luck with your publishing journey!
When you Post your book ,what platforms do use ?? All at the same time?
Yes, I'm wide. Ebook direct to KDP, Google Play, B&N, Kobo, Smashwords, then D2D to go to Apple Books and elsewhere. Paperback POD on KDP and IngramSpark; hardcover through IngramSpark. And direct sales on my website.
@@PaperTigerProductions thanks your the best
oof~ if only direct sales could be the norm :'-)
There's a dearth of publicly available data on this but I'm PRETTY SURE based on discussions I've had with my local printer who prints for quite a few self published fantasy romance authors that direct sales make up a significant chunk of their sales. We're talking limited pre-order print runs in the low thousands! Not sure what the long tail is like on those books, but a direct pre-order of 1000 hard copies is pretty damned good.
@@PaperTigerProductions omg, that is really good, and encouraging
Ibooks has been discontinued so that's pointless + the data shows iphone users aren't big readers
Still lots of iPad users though... I've tried the Pages set up process and in theory it should have been pretty seamless but that failed too because of the same bug I suspect.
