Excellent video, thank you guys! I’m just getting into shooters because of this channel. I’ve had “R-type Final” on playstation 2 for the longest, I absolutely adore R- Type!
Welcome aboard! R-Type Final is my favorite in the series by far. I'm workshopping all kinds of neat videos like this one, in the hopes of broadening our scope of content (though of course, Deep Dives are still going to happen)
In addition, from what i recall, the creepy tentacle force in Xexex was available on one of the unlockable ships in R-Type Final, or at least something very similar . Kind of surprising, considering it was made by a rival company.
I love this sort of cinematic shooter! Rtype was my first love in the genre and I can't have enough of it and its spawn. It's quite interesting that, given the success of the main saga, most (if not all) of its offspring are hidden, underappreciated gems. And don't get me started with Pulstar. God I adore that game.
If the rumors of Aicom being founded by former Irem employees are true then they were well within their rights to make a R-type derivative that is Pulstar, otherwise it would be pretty brazen for a company to blatantly copy a well known IP at the time and risk a lawsuit for their trouble What about X-Multiply, technically it doesn't have a force but the tentacles can shield the front and rear of the ship in the same manner as a force does, it features the same checkpoint system, the same kind of memorization needed in a R-type like game, and grotesque alien designs that would make H.R. Geiger proud
Oh yes, Aicom was definitely ex-Irem, but what I'm saying is, tge rumor was that Pulstar was literally R-Type 4 in name as well. As for X-Multiply it is also Irem, and that gives it connections that I want to use in other places :)
I think what I appreciate most about this channel is how it was able to reintroduce me to a genre I fell off from so many years ago, while also introducing me to games I either never heard about or passed up on simply because I didn't have the hardware to play them at the time. I'll need to give Redux: Dark Matter a shot some time!
I'm so glad you added Pulstar to this list, one of my all time favourite shmups. I'll probably be burned for this, but I reckon it out R-Types, R-Type. There's just something about it...
I never played shmups growing up in the 8 and 16bit generation. I've been watching hundreds of videos on these types of games, and about a year or two ago I finally took the plunge into shmups. R-Type was the obvious first choice to start with. I went from getting killed almost immediately or shortly after to being able to 1cc the entire game. R-Type, Gradius, Salamander, and Darius are my favorites and I can play them all for hours upon hours
I did the same kind of thing with Truxton; crushed in stage 1, to being able to get far into the second loop. I'm not a huge fan of R-Type, but some of the R-Type-alikes really hit the spot for me.
@@StudioMudprints Truxton is a super fun shooter. You get way overpowered in that game. It's fun to mow down everything in sight with the lightening shot
I’m just getting back into the world of schmups after not playing them for a couple decades. I used Blazing Lazers and R-Type on my TurboGrafx-16 during college. Would love to see more videos like this to discover how some of the earlier games have evolved.
Prototype looks good. I've played a few of these (Pulstar, XEXEX), and I enjoyed very much your show on Rigid Force. Learned about a couple of new ones though, so thanks!

Thanks for another AWESOME video! I picked up Rigid Force Redux after watching the Bullet Heaven episode and it's a BLAST! I normally don't enjoy R-Type style games due mostly to the checkpoint system (feels like slamming my head against a brick wall), but I'll put a few of these games on my radar and see what happens. Keep being awesome!

Great video, love this format. As for my favourite r type "type", you've already mentioned Pulstar so I'll go with the far more obscure Katakis on the c64. A game that took so much from r type that irem threatened to sue unless they handled the r type port for the c64 for free.
Is that the deal they struck? I remember it was pulled and re-released as Denaris, still a superb game as far as I recall. As I recall, that and Armalyte were pretty much the best C64 only shoot em ups? Well, and Cybernoid 2.
Loved last resort they had that baseball stars, fatal fury and blazing star on the cab at boys and girls club when i was a kid. i always kept the high score.
Got Last Resort on Xbox One a year or so ago, immediately attracted to it and loved the similarities to R-Type. Visually, the explosions are similar (and great)!
Fantastic video and concept! I'd like to see one featuring run'n'gunners like Contra or Turrican (which are diametrical opposites in terms of brutal difficulty, I know) :)
They haven't done an ACA NeoGeo release in some time... for now, Ironclad is available via DotEmu on gog.com. It's not as good as it could be, but it's something.
How about Gradius games - ones that involve the power-up system? I can name a few like Counter Attack, V-Five, Slap Fight / Alcon, Project X 1, Iridon 2. Otherwise, the power-up purchase system is rarely implemented.
Well, we've already covered IV o Genesis, both versions of V and Spirits, so I guess II, III, VI, the Switch releases of AC and IV and the Gold Packs could be a good watch.
HELP... does anyone know of another R-Type Final (ish) inspired game for PC? I can't play R-Type Final 2, as the system requirements are too demanding. Rigid Force looks almost perfect, except the weapons are too generic IMHO. Any suggestions? Thanks
As much as I like R-Type, I tend to prefer R-Likes for some reason. Gotta hand it to the Puls-type to be my favorite. It's shameless yet so honerable. It probably has more dong and sexual imagery than actual R-Type does lol

R-type games in particular, and Irem shooters in general, comprise a criminally unrepresented video topic in consideration of how historically important they are. These games are some of the most influential and most well crafted that the genre has to offer. I would love to see you do a regular review for R-Type - one would think that this would be a topic already sufficiently covered in UA-cam videos, however, this is not at all the case, there is a wide open opportunity for you to fill that gap. Reviews for R-Type 2, X Multiply, Image Fight, etcetera, are likewise lacking. How absurd and unjust is the situation, that an at least comparatively shitty game like R-Type Final 2 has many reviews while R-Type 2 which is much better has zero total reviews to be found on UA-cam?

It's a decent game, but it will be very, very easy outside of "veteran."

what slightly bothers me about Rigid Force is the Arcade setup. like it ends after each stage
The good news is, com8com1 is aware of the demand of a full-run arcade mode, so it could still happen.

Level long enemies have made up a staple of shmups since that day, even Cave got in on it with Mushi.

I think the cover you used for xexex 3:32 is for salamander
Xexex used to only be in the Salamander Portable collection on PSP as a home release prior to the ACA version which came well after this video

I was hoping to find one! But nothing really fit. Zero Ranger has that R-Series boss, but that's not really the same thing.

I just played Xexex the other night. Not a bad game. I think the stages are a bit on the long side though.

You heard the definition of "R-Type-like", didn't you? Last I checked, there were no dong creatures (or Force bits) in Söldner-X (or X2) and Axelay.
