Systayners are the best, specially if you’re working in people’s houses going up and down through tight staircases. Everything else is just a back injury waiting to happen, specially big heavy boxes that don’t have the middle top handle. If you’re stationery in the shop, then there’s many options.
Bravo sir ! It helps you work like a gentleman and not an ape . And yes image matters when a customer sees how you work ( like a gentleman and not an animal ) it builds trust and confidence, and helps them understand why you’re worth more than the other guys.
Haha! pretty much, its nice to have a place to put them back to though/know if they are missing. I bought the dewalt toughsystem tote and that is really good to be fair!
@@BradshawJoinery I 'm only doing stuff at home now but I have a mass of tools and I still buy 110V "just in case I end up back on the tools", ended up investing in a large number of TStack boxes very recently, not just the bigger ones for the tools, but the bin ones as well for fixings etc. Milwaukee looked nice but can't really justify the cost.
Great vid, I confess that I’ve invested too heavily in Systainers to make the change now. They do fit in my car well. For me the fact you have drawers and can access each tool you need is quite a plus point. Everyone is amazed that I can tell if I’m missing a tool so for me the whole system(s) whether Dewalt/Festool etc pay for themselves time and time again. The only advantage for me by keeping what I’ve got is at my age I can carry them. Very impressed and thanks for sharing. Regards Mike
Haha i have a fair stash even after selling 15 of them! Yes i love having the drawers. Ive not rooted around for a hand tool or moved a kit box since.. Joyous
How satisfyingly organized mate, feels calm and not the chaos I experience in my buckets and bags. Would like to know more about the square tips masonry bits
This is really impressive. I am currently doing a similar thing but with the older DeWalt TSTAK boxes (purely because I already have about 20 of them and the van racking is made for them). I have been switching over to the drawer versions. If I am doing a smaller job at a client's home then I can take the tools from the drawers in the van and put them in a tool tote. If I am doing a bigger job or in the workshop then I just wheel the whole lot in. There is nothing worse than needing the tool at the bottom of the bottom tool box and let's face it, no matter which was you stack the boxes you always need something from the bottom. I hadn't thought about building a workbench on top until I watched this video and its such an amazing idea.
Nice one Christopher, Im really enjoying working with the drawers and its been a pleasure chopping the foam into them tbh haha! The workbench is great, especially if youc an put it on wheels.
Nice lean setup, and with almost everything you need. I say this tongue in cheek, because it takes the whole lot to complete a small detail😅. I install cabinetry across the pond and i have a comparable set with Makita,Milwaukee and Bosch. Drawers (for me) saved 30% in capacity ,and 80% mentally. Cheers!
You’ve done a thorough job on this. I’ve struggled with the festool systainers. They do lock, if you turn the green lock 90deg upwards, allowing the stack above to hinge back, however it can be cumbersome. I’ve managed to break a couple. I’d been thinking about the dewalt, they look way more robust.
Brilliant video, Oliver. So nice to see a tidy work place. I like to keep my workshop, although modest, in good order. However, I know I have have ‘misplaced’ a box of screws recently as there is a gap in my box. A few years ago I took half my kit, including a DeWalt flip saw, to France to lay my son’s laminate flooring and left my drill and driver behind. I now have two sets! Thank you so much for sharing 🌞
At around 10:50 when you commented you’d “speed this up..”, I immediately imagined a bunch of tool nerds shouting “DOOOONNNNNT” at the screen. Very neat job. As we’ve come to expect. I have a similar issue with silver tools but I wrap a diagonal strip of orange, red or yellow electrical tape around it.
It’s nice to see a review related to something that I’m always trying to improve , carrying in all the gear can be pain anyway- I tend to bring everything just in case because you know the feeling when you have the right tool but you didn’t bring it ! They seem like a good product and your modifications will improve them. Thanks for the videos
Thanks David, The general consesnus was the milwaukee are the best, and i think a higher quality product but i like the latches and the ability to have a top handle on these. Plus the drawer shape suited some of my tools better
I have been trying for ages to modify/ change my systainers to better utilise them as great on job for work benches/ steps/ organizer etc but like you the tool i want is always at the bottom and in my workshop and van is a pile of unused systainers and lose tools in buckets in van as easier to carry buckets but not great for above mentioned with all tools in. Love these draws so definitely will be having a look at them. Thanks for the in-depth review.
Great! Another tool/thing i need in my life! I've known of the 2.0 system before but its only when you see someone who knows the trade as well as you, come up with a system as good as that, that you think, why didn't I do it!?! Great idea. Thanks for sharing
The combination of mobile workstations, carts, and sortainers is essential for efficient transport and site work with systainers. Two Festool mobile workstations side by side with 3-4 drawers each. 4 sys carts with 2-3 systainers each can fit under the table extensions. This gives you access to up to 12 systainers in drawers or on top of stacks. The second and third systainer down can easily be accessed without unstacking by design. The sortainers go in the bottom which have drawers. That's about 20 systainers that can be accessed without unstacking. Everything is on wheels and extra systainers stack on the tops of the small MFT tops for easy transport. Hope this helps.
Tanos system is great but i wouldnt change this now. I worked for 6 weeks in the same house before christmas and didnt lift my toolbox once and had constant acess to all my tools. It was dreamy.
I've been using the erbauer boxes, which are based on the Magnusson system for the last year. However, they have recently become harder to get hold of, and I recognise the stacked toolbox problem, especially when they are in the van. Your video inspired me to order 4 of the drawers for £500. I then saw Screwfix have an £80 off deal on the rolling boxes, so I ordered two of those sets costing another £320, and four handles at £15. That's a lot of money for my little handyman business... Let's hope they work well! I think I'll use two rolling bases with larger tools in, like a tracksaw, and a pair of drawer units on top of each. I will then make a mft top to go on top of both, but space them apart a bit to make a 60x120 work surface. With one of the drawers having the dogs etc in foam, I think that will be great on-site. Thanks for the video!
Blimey Sam, nice one, I did similar, bought one to test it then bought £900 worht of boxes and 150 of shadowfoam lol! Pleased with the result though and if look after them which i sure you will, will last a long time. Thanks
@@BradshawJoinery I've actually decided to return them. The wobble when they attach feels unworkable when compared to the Erbauer boxes which clip rock solid. I'll have to modify some boxes and make my own drawers.
My second video is why I'm returning them... Anyway, Ollie, Thanks for the inspiration, and giving me a reason to start as a UA-camr! Sam. Why I'm returning £900 of DeWalt Tough System 2.0 drawers and toolboxes ua-cam.com/video/K4Syd7wvUFc/v-deo.html
I have several Tough System 1.0 boxes. Only one two drawer box but I keep my coolest stuff in there. I like the ToughSystem tote with the open top and big metal handle for my tool belts and bags.
Great video Ollie. Its always annoyed me that no-one seems to make a box with a removable lid. I would realy like to have the tools in drawer-boxes in the workshop, and then just add lids when I (occasionally) go mobile.
I have a similar layout in my workshop, a large bench on wheels that I can just move about about close to where I'm working. All thing things that are likely to injure me when I go in the draw live in one draw and I'm careful hen I go in there :-). That MFT top attaching to the boxes is a great idea. I would make the plate that held the clips and then attach the plate to a sacrificial top. The top could be stuck down with double sided carpet tape.
I just to want to point out that Sortimo has a whole system built around this concept called WorkMo. It has smaller modules available that can be carried/stacked as well as wheels and MFT top, side attachements. They’ve been around longer than DeWalt’s system so maybe worth a check for some. There is also the option of getting slides, drawers, or the Mobile Workshop from Tanos/Festool, but Sortimo offers standalone drawers which might be what some are looking for.
Nice video Ollie. I have been trying to get my stuff organized forever. When I started in 1975, things were so much simpler, we didn't have all of the cordless tools to worry about that take up way too much space with the chargers and accessories. Would I get rid of them, nope. I bought a bunch of the Milwaukee Pack-outs a few years back thinking that would work. They didn't, just like your Sustainers', you have to unstack them to get to something. You can wheel them into a job, but when you unstack everything, you can't move around the room. Then Milwaukee came out with the Pack-outs with drawers. Maybe I should just retire again.
Hi Roy, retirement sounds good to me, ill join you haha. Yes the packout drawers sound like your best option. Start with 1 and some foam, See how you get on with it, I couldnt be happier, and had a great time organising everything!
Most useful comment. People spend way too much time talking about tools and boxes. I'm happy about every tool that doesn't come with a plastic case or box because they go into the trash anyway. No space for that. The last carpenter I saw only used a couple of self made wooden tool boxes. No need to carry 10 plastic boxes. The whole tool topic on UA-cam became a big joke.
When the new tools arrive, do us a favor and have the camera on for the unboxing. Many of us unable to justify such nice tools are living vicariously through you.
I went from a wall of cabinets with doors to a wall of open cases for systainers on rails and shelves, now everything has a home and is easily accessible (even bought systainers for non festool as well as systainers with bins for storage). Previously every tool was on a shelf or the makers box on s shelf. If I was installing I’d go with a van and rack storage. Long ago I had made my own cart for doing installations, it was a lot to haul around and half the stuff was most likely not needed. It really comes down to your work requirements and flow. Now I just need to sell off a stack of Dewalt parts boxes that I was using before. LOL
That is freaking awesomely perfect that's what I've been wanting to do for years still want to do it but I need a drawer big enough to get my skill saws in and a drawer big enough to get my nail guns in framing finishing so on in the foam makes it 10 times better awesome job
Thanks Brian, I can confirm it's awesome to use! I have managed to squeeze my plunge saw and battery planer into a box together aswell but required alot of modifications 🤣👍, I have the Ryobi 18g and 23g in a single drawer with all the nails aswell. It's so good! Haha
Great Video 👍🏻 I had a similar idea but with tstak draws on dolly's. I've found some 3d printed brackets on line by Shortworks that you can screw to your table top and clip to your tstak. I have four, one in each corner. I can then manoeuvre the whole thing around the kitchen or workshop wherever I'm working, also the dolly's come with brakes, it's very versatile and space saving. I think they do them for tough system boxes too!
@@BradshawJoinery Just make your own dolly's Ollie I promise it's well worth it for me it's a game changer being mobile, and added bonus, clean up at the end of the day is so easy too🙂 I love your videos too keep them up 👍🏻 (oh and make sure there's brakes on some of your caster's)
That's a lot better system and it's fool proof. This will prevent you from going out on a job with a tool missing because you can quickly check they are all there. Also like you said it's a nuisance having to open lids, rummage around and reshuffle the previous storage containers to find the items. Win, win and very neat. Tony
What a absolutely great review !! two thumbs up for you !! we've been having the same problems with the systainers as well, i looked at the Milwalkee packout drawers, but these are so heavy and bulky, and the actual space is not that great. Thanks Bro, you made my day !! Greatings, Riny and Francien
HI, thankyou for the comment, its great to hear that the video has helped. I am getting on really well with the boxes 1 year on. Other than the wobble once stacked and the top handle that needs ordering seperately, i cannot fault them. Everyone is very impressed that sees them too.
I lugged around Donki tool caddy and tool bags for years into customers houses. My back is now worn out. Tool boxes with wheels will be my go to in my next life.
I think as much of the problems are in the shape of the things we lift, these boxes with a top handle are incredibly nice to move around to be fair. Wheels suck on domestic work, you either end up carrying from van to house (worse off) or trundling muck from outside to in... hence the box breakdown with a wheeled base once im in. Works great.
Good video and a reviewer who actually uses his tools - must admit when I saw the title, I thought you must be crazy however - gotta agree with you. i've invested in the systainers as I do believe they're the most practical for my use (lightweight and quite robust). Problem is as with all these storage systems is the lid access. Festool pull out system is prohibitively expensive and to fit systainers in a van to take advantage of the height - costly. I've purchased a number of the XXl systainers and they work well and I don't carry multiple toolboxes - removed tools from boxes (using these for static storage) , 3d printed custom casings - boxes etc. , combined and stashed tools in the xxl systainers and has worked well.to date. Still believe that a stackable drawer system is 1st prize. Just watching your review video - pity de walt don't make drawer for track saws etc. Great solution to the wobble problem btw. I don't believe there is such as a perfect tool storage system - constant labour of love / hate. Thanks for the video.
Great video Ollie. I've been considering the dewalt system for a while... think you've made my mind up for me now. I also got the multi construction bits from your previous vid.. Great drill bits. Cheers.
Cheers Brian👍 I'd get hands on and see if you like them at a tool show or something if your considering it. Ive found them great, other than the wobbly stacking 👍 One comment said they aren't great in the hot sun, can understand that being black n all 👍
It’s just an offhand comment in this video, around the 10 minute mark, but I’d be super-interested in knowing more about why you prefer the D-handle jigsaw to the barrel grip version. Seems like that could be a video of its own!
It is better balanced in the hand, much nicer to use above the work, and the trigger can be controlled variably whereas the palm grip style is on or off, frustrating for some jobs!. You can also use the d handle exactly the same as the palm grip.
I love this system I thought the systainer system was way to go but always like you say no matter what order you stack them in you always want what's in the bottom one . Money is tight at the moment but hopefully end of the year will have time and money to have a few days just to do exactly what you have done
You can very easily open a systainer while other systainers are stacked on top of it. I do this routinely at work, with about waist high stacks. It's a major selling point of the system. I just try to put very large tools on the top of stacks, as it can be hard to open the boxes fully while stacked, but for little stuff, like say, my jigsaw and oscillating multi tool, you can easily get them in and out from halfway down or at the bottom of a stack. Getting a lid open to say, 45 degrees, is very realistic. Just support the stack as you tilt it back, grab the tool, or put the tool away, and close up again.
Cheers David! I would get yourself to a tool show and hopefully get hands on with both the packout system and the Dewalt. I made my chouce this way for a few reasons, but the packout is a better made box. All the best, O.
Excellent video, thank you! Really curious about the anti wobble solution you ended up making, can you share some pics or new video? The handle and wobble fix make this solution near perfect to me.
Cheers John, yeah im very impressed with both, the foam definitley makes the drawers more useable. it seems like a unnecessary expense for a start, but it actuall makes the whole outlay worthwhile.
They look really good. Couldnt you make a connecting piece between the two sets of drawers where you were planning on fitting the plastic. 26:49 If you make up something like a bow tie insert that goes from one box to the box behind it, which clips in, you wouldn't get them leaning when you pull the drawer out. Hope that makes sense and works..
Well done fella looks amazing. The foam really seems to add a quality feel. That rocking was a issue for me also . I have 3 draws unit s I would love a video showing the handle addition please
Cheers Stephen, the handle link is int he description and you literally unscrew 2 screws from each end and pull the side handles outwards, Tap the centre insert thing towards the back of the box and it lifts out, then put the handle in and slide the pins back, 2 minute job
Great informative video. This a problem ive been battling with for a long while! Even considered the snap on draw boxes for site use but they get too heavy, draws not deep enough etc....there simply isnt an ideal solution. Like you ive considered making my own but that becomes too heavy in its self... oh hum! I like the idea of having the tool storage as a work bench out and about this using up dead space and stops you from carrying the pop up saw horses and wooden rails system. However i do have a concern about putting the portable sire saw on top which is not fixed down. Worked with a guy couple of weeks ago who had a site saw not bolted to the stand, no riving knife (we are all guilty of this next bit) had to rip some 4x2 didnt put the knife in.....saw binds trys to kick back hes kind of bracing it, saw flips over falls on floor then proceeds to dance towards him. Somehow it didnt take his toes or foot off but it did get his fingers somshow. End result now he only has 2 fingers and a thumb on one hand. Moral of the long tale make sure that site saw is firmly fixed down somehow. Hope it works out long term it would be interesting to hear the longer term field views as its a difficult problem to overcome for transportation and workabilty. Thank you for taking the time to make the videos
Cheers Jon, Good point, i will look into a meshod/top board that i can attach the saw down to. Thats the last thing you need is the saw falling off the stand! Cheers for the heads up. I dont think any solution will be perfect. Hopefully i can rework my van racking to suit these boxes and acess all my tools from the van side door, then if i only need a few odd tools i can pull them from the drawers into a tote bag and be away
Im lovin this vid. (But im well jel). I see so many cluttered vans and it upsets me! But :- Ive found a flaw in your plan - If you put the chargers on the bottom, as soon as you plug a battery in- it will stick up and prevent you from opening the top drawer. Discuss 🤓
@@BradshawJoinery ah you see this is where the 9th box comes into play!! A stand alone charging box? At least that way it won’t be getting filled with saw dust if you’re using the table saw also.
I recently had $60,000 of my tools stolen from a roommate. He locked my fiancé & I out of the house we were staying in. Moved from N.Y to Houston so I’m trying to look on the bright side…. Besides him being an amputee, diabetic & escaped the swat team is beyond me. Iv been an automotive technician for 22 years & im looking for something like this. Im looking at it like trimming the fat, Matco tool boxes cost $$$$$ including all the tools. Anyway wish me luck cause I’m starting from scratch. This system seems to look good & im simply gonna militarize my load out. Stay blessed 🇺🇸
Its a good system but id suggest getting hands on or ordering a couple before commiting. im happy with them, but there are negatives to them as mentioned.
Very neat but I couldn't begin to fit my tools in little boxes or drawers. I tow a large trailer packed with tools. Behind a Ute with a lot more gear. Big dropsaws. Several circular saws. And a multitude of other things that in a box would just take up too much room in the trailer. It only just fits in without boxes. With boxes I would be driving a Semi. That is just my daily carry. For certain jobs I have to take a lot of other gear that I store at home in various sheds. Gone are the days of a tradesman with a canvas bag on a pushbike or small motorbike like it was when I was a kid. Somehow they used to manage and the quality of their work was superb. Now we have all this kit and are hard pressed to replicate anything like what was made in the past.
Its obviously not made for bigger tools, ive managed to (just) fit my plunge saw and planer into a box so short of the table saw and Mitre saw, i wonder what extra kit you take daily unless its for a crew of guys/ are you setting up a woodwork shop oniste like router tables etc?? The boxes in this video pretty much hold all id need as above, you could stack 5x that in a trailer easily, id say its more space saving than having them loose as tangled up tools arent efficient, Im actually amazed by the time i save now reaching for tools. The £1000 investment will be covered in no time.
Very nice Video, I fell out with the boxes 6 years ago when I got my first one, and build my own draw system , life on site got so much easier.. I have been really surprised that it has taken so long to get draws on the market as other trades often comment on them. I have saved more money than it cost to make by not buying containers . As an aside what make of junior hacksaw blades do you use as I can never seem to get good ones. ?
Cheers keV. If these don't last I'll be making my own Ali or timber system. I think there is a real market gap there! The blades are these I think... www.toolstop.co.uk/bahco-228-32-10p-junior-hacksaw-blades-pack-of-10-p20556/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwyt-ZBhCNARIsAKH1176zVAHHIDJU8J47tD8q0d5EvElYxfOk1ypeM3IWoHtpHITA3Lvb6nIaAi68EALw_wcB
Great vid, Ollie - I’m also thinking of the Milwaukee drawers (similar)…. However, spending time / engrossed learning the Shaper Origin at the moment.. Yes, I have all the Ryobi nailers - they are so good - never had a misfire in years - the 18g is now Brushless I think 🧐 Food for thought on the drawers layout - brilliant flow 🤗
CHeers mate, the packout seem to be the most wel made and a few more options/versatility, but i specifically wanted a top handle, and these drawers are wide enough(just) to fit the tools i want into them. Including the power file which is amazing.
I'd welcome your advice please as am relatively new to power tools, but find myself using them increasingly as I renovate my c17th cottage. I've been avoiding Ryobi as I wasn't sure of their longevity, but realise no single brand is the best at everything; while I'd love all Festool & Makita tools, piggybank says no. *Are there any other specific Ryobi tools you rate as holding up against pricier brands?* As an aside, this would make a good YT video - _What tools from across several brands make a good composite kit?_ Where to place your £/$, what matters less etc
I think it’s almost an impossible quest to find perfection in storage. I went from systainer to packout, mainly to reduce the amount of boxes needed to get the same, or generally more tools from the van to the site. I used to have similar to you a tool/s plus it’s ancillaries in shadow foam in a systainer. But shadows foam gets tatty, wears, and takes ages to workout what/ where to cut. And is so wasteful on space. Tools go in packout, anvils in systainer drawers, hand tools in vetos. Probably could tweak it but them I find after a change I loose any gained time in access and organisation wasted looking for it where it used to be stored, not where I moved it too. I know packout make drawers, but I’m not buying more plastic drawers, just so I can not use perfectly adequate plastic drawers I already own. 🤩🤯🤭
Great video. I have sustainers and yes they can be a pain but I just made racks in my van so every sustainer is on display and I just pull out the ones I need. Downside is multiple trips to the van as you rightly say, there’s always something you need in the other boxes. I use Festool and Milwaukee and have considered the pack out system, it’s just the initial outlay when I already have a good storage system. It just isn’t a great storage system and seeing yours has made me think. I just can’t buy dewalt though. It makes my eye twitch even thinking about it😂
Cheers Simon, like you say the systainers are a good setup, ive been using this kit for long enough now, and have been noting what core equipment i actually use day to day and made a compact and easy to use setup from that. Its working very well so far. 10 mins each end of a job and i have everything i need at hand. Brilliant.
If you're looking at getting rid of the systainers I know a couple of guys who would have some 👀👍 also assuming you're buying starlock multitool blades in bulk? if so any advice on a decent place for good blades? cheers.
Excellent video thanks 👏. I had to chuckle to myself though as I have literally only just done the exact same thing. I was getting so fed up with the amount of systainers I had to take on-site and the space they took up even though I had several 3 drawer ones. And as you say the handles do come off especially if you try and put several tools in one to save space. I started with two ordinary dewalt boxes and was going to buy the drawers but I didn’t like the rocking or the latching as I think they will eventually break with that amount of rocking. I didn’t think about making feet that’s a good idea, instead I actually switched to the Milwaukee Packout before I bought any more dewalt because they have a very sturdy connection and really good dolly. The only downside is the drawers aren’t IP rated lie the dewalt and are possibly a bit narrower. All I need now is to find a buyer for about 30 systainers 😳😂. Love you’re videos I think they’re the best on UA-cam thank you.
Hi Ian, thanks for that, Intersting to hear how many people have tried or moved tot he drawers, its a great system, and one which you see any other professional using in their workspace. You dont see a dentist moving boxes around to get the tooth puller out do you, It just makes sense! I looked at in person for a considerable time the packout drawers but a few featurs on the dewalt sold it to me, and i think i can get over all the downsides. No doubt speak again! cheers
@@BradshawJoinery Good analogy about the drawer system and I find the clients are impressed by it too. I’ve used the systainer drawers for years but the size was very limiting especially with foam. I dismissed the packout at first because I liked the wider drawers in the dewalt and the fact they’re still IP rated. It was only the wobble that put me off, I didn’t think about making feet to solve that so went back to the packout idea instead before I spent too much 😁. Its a shame nobody does a deeper drawer for things like the TS55 that would really set them apart. I noticed someone had cut the bottom out of the top drawer and joined two together , think I might give that a go. Good to see top class work still goes on by the way and you set the bar nice and high 👏🏻.
I have since managed to fit my planer and the tsc55 in he DeWalt box. I checked before hand and there was 5mm of clearance in a very specific orientation... So I cut the middle rail out, removed the top drawer and cut the bottom out the bottom drawer 🤣 it's tight but it works great 🤣🤣
That's a pretty slick system! How many tools do you own twice so you can keep one in the shop and one in the site work set? I find myself walking around the shop gathering tools for half an hour for the occasional site job. I do keep my systainers in a rolling drawer cart and a larger rack that stores them individually to avoid stacking so I can easily grab a few for the odd site job. More and more tools are now double but I'd love to hear about your approach
I have plenty of drills to cover 2 sites and the workshop, oh and home aswell.... lol, otherwise, i have one of the more expensive machines, like domino, ts55 but do have alternatives available, like biscuit and HK saws. I have a shop jigsaw and multitool, but most of the stuff i tend to use in both. I don't use power tools much in the shop, they tend to sit int he rack, and i use the machinery for most work. In short o could muster most tools twice, but tend to use the same ones in both environments
What tape measure do you recommend. The stanley is great but a bit too big. I recently tried to buy the original small metal one I used for years but they have stopped making them.
Tajima are great. Wurth sell a black tape made by tajima, it's about £20 but that's my favourite. It's 5m and narrow. Tajimas own 5m is thicker. But tajimas 3m is very nicely sized. They make the best tapes.
Nice one Ollie for thinking outside the BOX 🤭 its so nice when you just say sod it I’m doing something different. Since your on modern day tech check out moasure one measuring device its very interesting
Thankyou Jim. I can honestly say the drawers are brilliant to use. I have seen a similar thing to the Moasure used, Great devices for room planning/ design to speed things up.
Pro Tip for Europeans, get the "Euroboxes" instead. They come in 1000 different versions with lids, with side panels, with wheels and all sort of stuff. They are all standarized in their sizes and they are cheap. You can get the ones with the side load windown, you can stack them, add wheels underneith and get access to any tool you want. You can also get them with lids even lockable if you wish. They cost 20€ per box. Standard sizes are 60x40cm then it´s like with DIN A4 DIN A3 etc. double the size for the bigger one and half it for the nexr smaller one. So 40x30cm, 30x20cm etc.
@@BradshawJoinery You are most welcome, I too am always looking for better storage ideas. Only one type of box is missing. Is a collapsible metal box with side load door which is also stackable. The Chinese have those out of plastic for towels and stuff but they are of a shitty quality. I really don´t feel like designing my own though to be honest.
Here in the States I use the Milwaukee Pack outs they hv the 3 drawer system very deep & I can pack plenty into them! I skipped the foam and tend to stay away from overloading cause I change it around for finish carpentry jobs! It stays in my truck facing the door (2 of them 6 big drawers) and I also use Makita Sustainers. They seem to hold my big stuff, track saws; guns, and other tool like batteries. Those are nice seem almost like they copied the Red Tool? However mine do not hv the tilting problem u showed! Good foam I may try it! Thk u mate for the time & Video always! Pro stuff for pros by a pro!
Cheers matey, the Packout is a better made drawer for certain, but a few features on these swayed me in this direction. Namely i can have the top handle, the packout latch/bar i didnt like, and the shape of this box is much more favourable to me. Good to hear youve chosen a similar path and im not barking up the wrong tree. ( I know im not because the drawers concept is bloody brilliant)
@@BradshawJoinery for sure fair enough! I leave the drawers in my truck with certain stuff. The tools I pack in on big jobs if I can lock up and home owners R on site! I found a top handle pack out two shelf system rectangular in shape and I call it (labeled it) my “carpenters box”! Depending on job I switch out different hand tool for my finish bags (I do not know how u work w/o bags?) although many guys here who do finish don’t wear them either! However they scatter tools all over ! Expensive tools! So I hv a system however that foam has peaked my interest! Thank u once again and your a credit to our trades brother!
@@BradshawJoinery At 27:20 you say the containers do not have a center handle. Here you say it does, and on their website it shows one. At that point in your video, it's hard to tell with the unit on the left, and the one on the right is broken. It could be a case of you having both generation 1 and gen 2, and only gen 2 has that handle. Can you comment? Thanks.
These are all the 2.0 drawers and do not come with a centre handle. I added them after I had edited the video but before I published it so added a clip in of the fitted handle. The part number is in the description
You could probably cut some plywood pieces to fit in the feet hole on top to lock the two sides together on the top. I have the pack out system. I like them but I think I like the Dewalt drawers better.
Drawers are certainly a game changer when it comes to tool storage. I got the milwalkee packout drawers a month ago, more expensive than the dewalt but I am very happy with them.
Same here I have started switching over to packout drawers. The clip system makes for some interesting bench and storage ideas. The roll around bases and two stack of drawer boxes make for good work bench height.
THe Packout are deffo a better quality box, but there are a few factors that swayed it this way for me. i prefer the shape and size of these, i can add a top handle and the latches are quicker and more intuitive than the lock handle. Close call though as the packout has some better feature too and like i say are deffo better made.
First-time viewer from the good ole' US of A....... I've been looking at the DeWalt Tough System to fit my cordless tools and other things into, but haven't bought any yet. Some questions: 1. How are they holding up? Any breakage yet? 2. To form a back-to-back box platform such as you are doing, is there any (easy) way to make that back-to-back connection?
Hi, the general consesnus is the packout is a lot better, I looked at the packout alot, (in person) but prefer the shape and a few features of these. Ive not had them long enough to say durability wise tbh!
Cheers matey, it was the first thing I looked for to see if the Ryobi guns would work for me 👍 18g just fits in the drawer too with a 2ah battery installed. 23g one arrives today 💪
Only remove 1 tool to access another except coping saw possibly… looks nice amd neat BTW however I work in lofts in domestic houses… to do average day I would be worn out getting all that in a loft ….try making a job specific box lol..u will be spending £1,000s to do that..hence I have a few velocity bags for various jobs and suck up the …where did I put that as instil Tend to put everything in the same slot
Every time you opened a drawer I repeated the thought even louder in my head...omg I really hope there's a tracking device on that box. Lol. That's a crazy set up dude. What is the brand of that scriber?
Thanks Michael, I added a clip in near the end of the handles fitted. They were about £3.50 each and made a huge difference for me. A standout difference over the packout system.
@@BradshawJoinery sorry my bad just rewatched it, I just seen bit where said borrowed 1. I wouldn’t be without. I went from mak pack to the dewalt 1.0 boxes stronger and better I did similar using as a bench handy with install work saving need for trestles
Hi Steve, i use the Trend 8" 1000g In the workshop then hone on a leather wheel and onsite i carry a 6" DMT Diasharp in Fine Grit (its the perfect one) the leather sleeve is great for honing the edge. I did a video on my sharpening process in the early days on the channel. (not my best work)
Noooo. I changed from sustainer too. Because of the damp. I got dewalt toughsystem. My tools are dewalt. I love dewalt. I have no problem with others. It's just the platform we all use. Milwaukee nailers are 100 times better so I use those. Bosch are more powerful Lowe torque in the impactor. But toolbox wise. Toughsystem although water and damp proof. For my van, no way. I've broken clips and my fingernails trying to pry them apart. Milwaukee packout is hands down the best system I've ever used. Waterproof. 1 click and it slides out. Stack them side by side. I have 3 side by side with a lorry strap, no shelves. They just come apart without any problems. I broke the receiver clips on 4 of my dewalt boxes. A full packout loaded with tools and batteries, I can literally lift the whole lot into the van in one piece and it can take the weight without breaking. By back will definitely not thank me for it. But take my advice and use the packout. I have 3 of them and never looked back . I got the rolling toolbox too. But I'm struggling to actually find a use for it. I'm sure it has one. But just not for me. I'll probably use it as a damp proof press for my Veritas and lie Neilson planes. So that'll justify buying a second one. They get lonely 😂
Haha at them getting lonely, I did spend a lot of time mulling over between the two, but there are a few things that ultimately swated me in the dewalt direction. THe shaoe of drawer, latches and the top handle are the main deciding factors but it was tough to move away from the build quality of the packout im not gonna lie!
Really enjoyed the video, a place for everything & everything in place (except a first aid kit ) all that quality German engineering even down to the driver bits from Lidl 😂
I bought a laminate plank quillotine at Lidl in the reduced to clear for less than £10 ( just on the it might come in handy 😂) well I'm doing a floor for my sister this week so I tried it out on some spare stuff I had, works treat! Clean straight cross cuts with no effort, I did try length cuts, it works but a jigsaw will be easier.
Why didn’t you look at Festool’s SYS-AZ system or their sustainer rails? Or building custom cabinets on rollers or something. Surely either of those would have been cheaper than buying new tool boxes.
Wey aye, if it wasn't for the lack of waterproofing (when opened, water just falls straight into the box) I'd have definitely gone with these. As is, I went with the tstak system by Stanley which is exactly the same with very small insignificant differentials except the DeWalt has one box which is stubborn, I can't remember what that was about but got it in a deal with a transparent case with little boxes. I have a few drawers and it also helps access things whenever; I do have two deep boxes which is annoying but fits my sds drill absolutely perfectly longways and a few other clunky tools like the router. I'm happy with my choice given their storage outside and the cheap convenience but fantastic quality they have but I can only fit a 400 or 450 hand saw, not a huge compromise but whatever. The real frustration is being unable to store clamps, I was thinking about modding the cart for them though
Cheers matey, yesh these would be no good in the elements. I use for indoor use predominantly and jsut keeps the dust off the tools. I love them so far.
Thanks, it's this one, an older version, but might have to look for it where it's available somewhere. amzn.to/3Lg3db1 Wera do a nice set amzn.to/3xnGNio And the long bits I use are here... www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-hex-shank-mixed-impact-screwdriver-bit-set-9-pcs/16648
Organising my tools is almost a job in itself. No matter what you do you always end up with some random stuff in a flexy bucket !!
Haha! pretty much, its nice to have a place to put them back to though/know if they are missing.
Joyous
@@BradshawJoinerybut Festool also have systainers with drawers 🤔
@@Philomathetiny drawers that you can’t fit anything useful in.
Cheers!
Wow! That’s incredibly impressive and inspiring; a big improvement on Systainers. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Steve 🙌👍
You’ve done a thorough job on this. I’ve struggled with the festool systainers. They do lock, if you turn the green lock 90deg upwards, allowing the stack above to hinge back, however it can be cumbersome. I’ve managed to break a couple. I’d been thinking about the dewalt, they look way more robust.
Cheers matey, THe dewalt are a great solution but not perfect. i love them but i suggest trying 2 together before comitting!
Cheers Ray, Haha its so easy to leave something in the workshop! Maybe a blessing that now you have two!
Haha apologies Frank, i will feature new tools amid whatever im making next time. yeah im gonna get some festool green paint i reckon. Matchy matchy
Cheers Chris, Have a look at both the packout and the toughsystem, Packout is better quality but the toughsystem ticked the right boxes for me
Good point I’m a Systainer guy but you have a good system.and it’s true it’s what works best for the person 👌🏾
Mr. Bradshaw, I have found your videos fantastic. You are a master craftsman in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thankyou David! Very kind of you!
Sam.
Why I'm returning £900 of DeWalt Tough System 2.0 drawers and toolboxes
ua-cam.com/video/K4Syd7wvUFc/v-deo.html
I have several Tough System 1.0 boxes. Only one two drawer box but I keep my coolest stuff in there. I like the ToughSystem tote with the open top and big metal handle for my tool belts and bags.
I bought the tote at the same time as my first box. It's bloody brilliant box to be fair!
Thanks for sharing heaps of concentrated experience!
No problem matey 🙌👍
Great video Ollie. Its always annoyed me that no-one seems to make a box with a removable lid. I would realy like to have the tools in drawer-boxes in the workshop, and then just add lids when I (occasionally) go mobile.
Im sure the perfect system will come in time, but i guess its one of them things that the perfect system is different for everyone.
Nice one, I plan to make a torsion type top so i can poke clamps through the mft holes and also raise it up a little. Its working great though
Great idea putting the googles wit the router, only yesterday was I flush cutting edge banding and really should have been wearing them.
Cheers matey, yeah i had a look! its darn pricey, but anything that improves daily work flow is worth big £££
I use bread trays from an old bakery! They fit inside each other when empty and on top when full! Free of charge! 😬🤷🏻♂️😬
I hear you! I like to make do with stuff in and around the workshop but try to keep things looking professional on an expensive install
@@asdqwe4468 the weight of a similar system made from timber would render them impractical
I use the Dewalt storage system as well. There is a trolly for both the Tough System and the T-Stak system.
When the new tools arrive, do us a favor and have the camera on for the unboxing. Many of us unable to justify such nice tools are living vicariously through you.
Will do!!! Ive just got soem Ryobi nailers, they are really really good tbh
LOL
Haha it finny how we progress, investing in one system and finding it great then change and wonder how you ever coped lol.
Haha
I use the drawer sustainers, they are excellent.
Yes they are good! They should do every size in a drawer! Id swap back haha
They’re awesome for fixings and accessories but you can’t fit power tools in them, not 18v anyway.
Nice one Kenny, i will check that out! Etsy is brilliant sometimes! There isnt a dolly for the toughsystem AFAIK unfortunately
Brilliant - thank you
The ultimate challenge is packing as much stuff into a small space and still being able to find and use it quickly . . .
Cheers Chris, These are working so well!
That's a lot better system and it's fool proof. This will prevent you from going out on a job with a tool missing because you can quickly check they are all there.
Also like you said it's a nuisance having to open lids, rummage around and reshuffle the previous storage containers to find the items. Win, win and very neat. Tony
Hopefully its fool proof. im the right person to test that! :D The drawers are proving very very nice to work with!
@@BradshawJoinery thanks for the update, can you tell us How you fixed the wobbling, Cheers, Riny and Francien
Hey man, massive thanks for the info and link to the part needed for the top handle. Just ordered a few for my toughsystem 2 drawers :)
No worries matey, enjoy!
Please give us the GPS location of where all those unwanted and unloved systainers were left in and we will race to re-home them! Ta!
Haha!! Ill be hanging ontot hem for when i come to replace any tools probably!
Ive found them great, other than the wobbly stacking 👍
One comment said they aren't great in the hot sun, can understand that being black n all 👍
Both systems are better than my bags for life tool storage.
We all have a similar thing tbh, for them last few tools that never have a place ahha
I havent perfected it yet, but a 5mm flat packer stops it a treat. I need to come up with a proper solution lol
All of the systems have a set of drawer options!
Fantastic piece of kit and the shadow foam was ideal for keeping your tools accessible.
Cheers John, yeah im very impressed with both, the foam definitley makes the drawers more useable. it seems like a unnecessary expense for a start, but it actuall makes the whole outlay worthwhile.
Brilliant mate, awsome set up that’ll make your job a lot more efficient and looks super professional
Cheers matey, yes its proving very very nice to work with!
Not a bad idea that! Thankyou!
Marking Tools: A big hammer. That's my kind of tool kit 😁
Hahaha perfect 🔨
I'm thinking about getting rid of my milwaukee packout system and going for these boxes/draws because they look so much more versatile
Deffo go see them at a show and get hands on 👍 the connecting latches are carp, but I don't really need them
Great informative video.
Discuss 🤓
😭 AHH that's good thinking. In a predicament now aren't I 🤣🤣🤣
I'll ponder that one lol.
Use the same, however still have a systainers kicking about for shop work
Yeah I'll have a few to be fair, alot won't fit in the drawers like all the saws and the planer.
How do you get on with the drawers?
Great vid, Ollie - I’m also thinking of the Milwaukee drawers (similar)…. However, spending time / engrossed learning the Shaper Origin at the moment..
Yes, I have all the Ryobi nailers - they are so good - never had a misfire in years - the 18g is now Brushless I think 🧐
Food for thought on the drawers layout - brilliant flow 🤗
CHeers mate, the packout seem to be the most wel made and a few more options/versatility, but i specifically wanted a top handle, and these drawers are wide enough(just) to fit the tools i want into them. Including the power file which is amazing.
Ive got both nailers now, really impressed with them!
@@BradshawJoinery yep - they out perform Makita and Milwaukee too - 👌🏼
@@BradshawJoinery mmmmm - I’ll need to revisit a power file 🤗
I'd welcome your advice please as am relatively new to power tools, but find myself using them increasingly as I renovate my c17th cottage.
I've been avoiding Ryobi as I wasn't sure of their longevity, but realise no single brand is the best at everything; while I'd love all Festool & Makita tools, piggybank says no.
*Are there any other specific Ryobi tools you rate as holding up against pricier brands?*
As an aside, this would make a good YT video - _What tools from across several brands make a good composite kit?_ Where to place your £/$, what matters less etc
Haha Yeah impossible to find perfection. I have adpoted this system very successfully and love it. Literally enjoy using it every day.
Well played! Thank you 🎈
Cheers matey
Did you manage to find someone to sell you the handles for the toughsystem?
Yes miles tool, the link is in the description i think
@@BradshawJoinery thank you. Are there any other springs or bits that are need ed when I order the handles?
Very nice setup 😍😍😍 toolporn heaven 💕💕💕 THANKS 👍👍👍
Cheers Paul!
@@BradshawJoinery thank you.
Just go to show how things have changed from your apprentice Bag to all of the selections of tools available today.
Absolutley. I had a canvas bag of tools at one point but it soon got outgrown!
I did a quick check, and shipping to Germany, for example, for the "starter kit" was £13.33, 1/3 of the product price...
Hmm, seems expensive! Brexit for you i suppose.
Thanks, 👍 good idea
@@BradshawJoinery You are most welcome, I too am always looking for better storage ideas. Only one type of box is missing. Is a collapsible metal box with side load door which is also stackable. The Chinese have those out of plastic for towels and stuff but they are of a shitty quality. I really don´t feel like designing my own though to be honest.
Hope they are more durable than the version 1…. I use both systainers and Milwaukee pack out now
I think they will be ok, we will see!
Interesting....I've ordered one to try out.
Nice one. Let me know your thoughts.
what where the screwdriver handle and the long bits as im looking at my tool kit and fed up with how many screw drivers i have
the driver is snappy and the bits were erbauer from screfwix! Good set.
You could probably cut some plywood pieces to fit in the feet hole on top to lock the two sides together on the top.
I have the pack out system. I like them but I think I like the Dewalt drawers better.
Cheers Rod, I would really miss the top handles, and the shape for carrying i think. Packpout does have some nice features though
Some questions:
Are the boxes the right height to make an outfield if you stick the jobsite saw on two and three for the outfeed?
Im not sure, ill look into it!
Look at Badaptors so you can use the ryobi nail guns with your existing batteries.
Cheers matey, it was the first thing I looked for to see if the Ryobi guns would work for me 👍 18g just fits in the drawer too with a 2ah battery installed. 23g one arrives today 💪
@@BradshawJoinery 23g! did you order that from the US? I got the 18g gun last month when it was almost 50% off. Very happy with it so far.

Thanks Stephen 👍🙌
Only remove 1 tool to access another except coping saw possibly… looks nice amd neat BTW however I work in lofts in domestic houses… to do average day I would be worn out getting all that in a loft ….try making a job specific box lol..u will be spending £1,000s to do that..hence I have a few velocity bags for various jobs and suck up the …where did I put that as instil
Tend to put everything in the same slot
i do similar i have an empty tote in the van and load it from the organised boxes! :D
I’ll buy the Systainers then!
Haha, Someone has beaten you to it
Every time you opened a drawer I repeated the thought even louder in my head...omg I really hope there's a tracking device on that box. Lol. That's a crazy set up dude. What is the brand of that scriber?
Haha it's a nice setup to use that's for sure 👍🤣.
The scriber is the Veritas log scribe but looks like they changed the name., amzn.to/3DzA20R
I feel you’re pain I have all Bosch Lboxx and they’re the same. It’s a complete pain in the butt when the item you need is in the bottom box 🤦🏼♂️
Yep! Keep the tools safe and easy to identify, but annoying to work with at times.
Does bolts need ordering along with handles
No the handles hold in using the same method as the bit you remove. a few folk ahve made videos on it since i released this so have a look
Hi. Could you tell us what junior hacksaw ladies you have found. Thanks
Brilliant review. Incase you didn’t know you can buy the handles 👍
I went from mak pack to the dewalt 1.0 boxes stronger and better I did similar using as a bench handy with install work saving need for trestles
lovely video buddy. I use the drawertainers - not going to tell you how many i have - but i do love drawers :)
😂 brilliant. Yeah it's definitely the revolution in tool storage 💪
What did you you use to cut the foam please?
I used the shadowfoam cutting kit. The scalpel was well worth the investment compared to the one I had. The spinners are good too
I see them on there site 👍😊 thanks
What sharpening stone do you use ?
Very nice, i wished Makita made this as well.
Really enjoyed the video, a place for everything & everything in place (except a first aid kit ) all that quality German engineering even down to the driver bits from Lidl 😂
Ah I think we all end up falling for some of the Lidl sets as we are dragged along on the weekly shopping 😂
Canny beat a Lidl Special buy haha! I have a lidl track saw i picked up with some bread and milk once, still yet to use it
I bought a laminate plank quillotine at Lidl in the reduced to clear for less than £10 ( just on the it might come in handy 😂) well I'm doing a floor for my sister this week so I tried it out on some spare stuff I had, works treat! Clean straight cross cuts with no effort, I did try length cuts, it works but a jigsaw will be easier.
Why didn’t you look at Festool’s SYS-AZ system or their sustainer rails? Or building custom cabinets on rollers or something. Surely either of those would have been cheaper than buying new tool boxes.
could you tell me what brand are the screwdriver handles and driver bits that are in the pliers draw, please
The handle is a old discontinued snappy and the bits are erbauer long from Screwfix
