Hey Jon, don't be hard on yourself. You're hilarious, make good points about game mechanics and don't forget watching you play/talk is awesome. I ( but I know everyone else too ) love your videos.
I think in cases where the character itself is built with slippery controls it's different since you have to adjust for it the entire time you play as that character.
You slide around the walls in super meat boy. Once you start in one direction on the ground you don't instantly turn round. You gain momentum constantly. Besides my point was the game is build around speed runs not precise platforming just giant leaps and fast movement.
I think my favorite type of ice level are the ones from the Ratchet and Clank series. They make you slip and slide, but when you get on ice in those levels, they tart you off slow and let you control your momentum very well. The best thing about those levels is that if you go into the air, you can change your momentum almost immediately and got in any direction you want.
23:18 I went back and looked through all the overworld maps and cutscenes, this is the first instance you can actually see the tower. There are mountains that _look_ like towers in the Jungle map, but that's it.
I posted about this on Twitter when Donkey Kong started, so a bunch of people missed it. I'm using Donkey Kong as some solo commentary practice since I wasn't happy with the last Superman episode commentary wise and I've mostly been doing group/co-op stuff lately. After DK ends, Superman will continue. That might be a couple of weeks from now though, because I'm in the process of packing up to move to a new place.
It also helps you're talking about a game you love and therefore can keep your enthusiasm up while you're doing it. I think doing Donkey Kong will be great for your morale since you can remember this feeling of basking in your love for gaming. 'Cause once you get back on Superman 64, your pep is going to get challenged again. Remember how you feel through this Let's Play and you'll do just fine.
Exactly, not to mention the amount of work he has to put into each part of Superman. He stated that this LP would be a more relaxed one, and it definitely shows. He's less organized and that makes it even more fun to watch.
I still think the last SuperMan 64 ep is one of the if not the best ep you did and showing all the glitchs made it even more awesome I can understand about getting the solo LP commentary practice but I still say you are the best LPer I hope the moving goes well and you have no problems
It's pretty much what it sounds like: A level that takes place in a sewer/series of underground tunnels, usually containing a maze. There was a point in time where the mass majority of games coming out all had sewer levels.
I know about the guys in 7-3, you can even see me bump into them on the second block. I was trying to make sure I didn't miss the jump and just fall/get shoved into the spikes. I think that was my first time getting through 7-9 like that.
Damn, Jon! You're just cruisin' through this game! I've gotta play this again sometime. It's been far too long. Looking forward to the next one! Keep up the brilliant work! :)
Having owned and played this title myself, there are 9 worlds (technically 10 counting the original DK stages). After Iceberg comes the Canyon, which is a full 16 stages long, and then comes DK's tower. Short as Big City and Airplane, but there's a twist you'll have to wait and see when he eventually uploads those stages.
11:38 The guys moving around the blocks in 7-3 don't actually hurt you unless they shove you into the spikes or something. Just thought I'd tell you. I love how Mario Vs. Donkey Kong took a lot of mechanics from this game but used them in new ways. The falling icicles were changed to falling spikes and only appeared in the Spooky House levels, but they functioned the same way. That was a damn good run of 7-8, the ending part usually gives me issues. Funny, that's always how I went down in 7-9...
Ice levels are so fun, its amazing using sliding to increase your skill camp imo. I personally freaking hate games that screw up your controls. Like in games where you get poisoned or something and suddenly left is right(I cant think of one right now, of course as is the way of trying to come up with examples).
When I was younger I absolutely loved the Airplane world. I guess it's part of being a child and believing that you were actually on a big airplane in the sky. In retrospect, it's an okay world with nothing really special. All of World 8 and 9 in one video? Your crazy Jon, World 8 is quite long, and 9 is quite challenging compared to the rest of the game (there's a crazy rope jump in one of the 9 worlds that's a HUGE pain to pull off without dying to.)
I think most people generally hate ice levels. I really can't think of many ice levels I actually like. That Brawl in the Family strip about Ice Worlds pretty much sums up my feelings on ice stages.
I understand about the ice physics thing. I remember, though, that there was one game where the ice levels were my absolute favorites, Loco Roco. But that's the only one I can actually think of.
hey Jon, if I may, I know you say you don't like Ice stages, but isn't there like one diamond in the rough that you like? I'm not a fan of air themed areas, due to the numerous pits they normally throw in. but I love the sky city in Twilight Princes
What has happened to all those Super Mario World Roms?! I loved those and I have been witing to see you do more of them! Do you have any plans to do more of them cause I really do love it when you do them and would make me what to whach your video's on this channel again. Please do some more soon.
Ice causes you to slip around, not be able to control movement, fight the slip everytime you turn, and always lose traction. Sliding down walls (gravity), not instantly turning around after running (momentum), and gaining momentum (intertia) are real-life physics that are easy to control and predictable, the opposite of ice physics. And how does it being built for speed relate to ice? Ice is slow and clumsy. Plus SMB has precision platforming AND speed together in relatively equal parts.
I know how you feel Jon, Desert levels are my major pain, ESPECIALLY if there's a hydration mechanic, or a sandworm mechanic, its so annoying! It feels like it adds an unnecesary rush
This is a terribly obscure reference but when donkey kong get's hit by the barrel, it makes the exact same noise as something from Space Cadets pinball on....
@themysterylad this is paula (or pauline) not peach. just wanted to point that out. @protonjonsa the crown crown crown lives thing was not in new super mario bros. for the ds. i think it started with new super mario bros wii.
The story for the original DK game: Mario (Jumpman) is a circus owner and torments DK into doing tricks and such. That's why DK rebels and takes Pauline. This is also chronically before Bowser, so...
I can't wait for the Tower. 9-8 has my hands-down favorite track in the entire game. Anyway, what you had to say about the walri was awesome. Just sayin'.
How dare Jon provide you with free entertainment at a timetable of his own choosing. I think we should strap him to his PC so he can produce us 60 LPs a day like some sort of ProtonJon sweat shop.
Why is it that ProtonJon's LP's never make it into my sub boxes? I wait for his perfectly sculpted works of art patiently then ease the tension with Chuggaaconroy and JoshJepson.
I don't mind ice levels in games so long as they are used properly, like if you have to use the sliding to get under things or make longer jumps. I don't like when they are just used to make you slide off one block wide platforms. But hey, at least most games don't make you slide around a bunch WITHOUT ice, like the first Megaman.
I share your loathe of ice stages for the most part. The only exception I've had was the Ice Cavern in Ocarina of Time, since I loved the music for it so much. It's odd how the majority of ice stages have some of the better musics games.
Jon, does your career field have anything to do with game design, or are you analyses simply gathered from years of gameplay experience? You opinions (like on the ice levels here) are very thought out and well-argued, so it sounds like you have professional experience with it.
If you want artificial challenge, look no further than the bubbles in the Wario Land series. The ones where you are taken to the water surface if you touch them.
I never said he was failing to update just to screw with us. Keep in mind, though, even if he isn't consistent on uploading from TRAG, he IS consistent on actually attending the TRAG sessions.
I agree that your not careful Jon, but the fact that you take a lot of risks is one of the things that makes you a great lper. That and the fact you have played some of the hardest game and beaten them.
Hey Jon, don't be hard on yourself. You're hilarious, make good points about game mechanics and don't forget watching you play/talk is awesome. I ( but I know everyone else too ) love your videos.

sure ice levels make the game a bit harder and crazy but i think that's a good thing..it gives you a fresh new aspect on the game
I think my favorite type of ice level are the ones from the Ratchet and Clank series. They make you slip and slide, but when you get on ice in those levels, they tart you off slow and let you control your momentum very well. Now that's badass
Got to love how no one seems to care that there is a huge gorilla fighting an italian plumber on the wing of the plane. it's all fine and dandy.
I posted about this on Twitter when Donkey Kong started, so a bunch of people missed it. I started watching and my cat jumped up onto my lap, looked at the screen and started purring. I think he likes your videos Jon. :D
Exactly, not to mention the amount of work he has to put into each part of Superman. He stated that this LP would be a more relaxed one, and it definitely shows. He's less organized and that makes it even more fun to watch.
these Donkey Kong videos are being uploaded regularly... I'm impressed Jon!
Alright. More ProtonJon!
You're the guy that got me into watching LPs of just about everyone.
So yeah, thanks for that.
this is the first LP of ProtonJon's I'm watching, I learn so much about ProtonJon in this LP.
Blame UA-cam. I uploaded this video hours ago and it only just finished processing.
Hey Jon I actually bought this game on my 3DS cause of you and it's A LOT of fun. Thanks :D
I still think the last SuperMan 64 ep is one of the if not the best ep you did and showing all the glitchs made it even more awesome
I can understand about getting the solo LP commentary practice but I still say you are the best LPer
I hope the moving goes well and you have no problems

Thanks for the laughs! And they for the commentary too, not just the gameplay!
I'm very impressed that it hasn't taken years between all of these videos
Damn, Jon! You're just cruisin' through this game! I've gotta play this again sometime. It's been far too long. Looking forward to the next one! Keep up the brilliant work! :)
Wait, do I really say gimmick/mechanic a lot? I've never actually noticed that.
I totally forgot about this LP. Good job, Jon.
Yay! :3 I really enjoy your more informative LP's like that, but I'll definitely get around to watching these, too!
Guys, he uploads ALL THE TIME. He has dial up so it takes a year to get a new episode up. He then instantly begins uploading a new one.
I love how you are featured in more videos in the Runawayguys than in your own channel. But I still love your videos.
It's different if the entire game is built around that mechanic, since you're learning it right off the bat.
Actually in this case Chris is right. I'm not running ads on the Donkey Kong LP currently.
All of super meat boy is a huge ice stage.
Seriously the dude is slippy as fuck
Sickness. The greatest incentive to play video games!
Oh my god, Jon! You uploaded a video! I'm proud of you! Lol, but seriously, keep rocking on!
one of the nice things about protonjonsa he still comments back to his fans
Sorry, it's because I'm out of the country right now. I get back Thursday, so I'll see if I can get it posted by the weekend.
13:51 The BEST walrus impression ever!
yep, it was. when you get a lot of lives, the numbers are replaced by symbols and letters. a crown was one of the symbols
you are the best LPer and hope the moving goes well and you have no problems love you jon :)
Having owned and played this title myself, there are 9 worlds (technically 10 counting the original DK stages).

I don't think it would've helped in that situation, since if I couldn't get the timing right, I'd have to reset the platform.
11:38 The guys moving around the blocks in 7-3 don't actually hurt you unless they shove you into the spikes or something. Just thought I'd tell you.

Funny, that's always how I went down in 7-9...
I've always enjoyed ice levels for some reason. I liked the maneuvers I could figure out with the momentum/physics.
Lets put it this way, when Jon uploads you can see the time he puts into making the video.
So should I be saying obstacle instead since it's an element of the game that the player has to overcome?
What would you call it then?
"Listen to the music."
I literally held my breath so I could hear better.
Wow Jon, you've been a busy bee! Still cant wait to see your stage 7 of your Superman 64 documentary
Ice levels are so fun, its amazing using sliding to increase your skill camp imo. I personally freaking hate games that screw up your controls. Jon, those dropping icicles are also in Ice Cap Zone in Sonic 3
*found a video recommended for me*
*watches it*
Halfway through the video: Holy shit. ProtonJon uploaded something.
that was meant to be more of a reference to what jon calls chugga whenever he jokes about jons uploading schedule
New youtube sensation, Two walrusus, one key!
22:20
"No"
Why did that make me laugh so much?
I think most people generally hate ice levels. I really can't think of many ice levels I actually like. That Brawl in the Family strip about Ice Worlds pretty much sums up my feelings on ice stages.

I'm not a fan of air themed areas, due to the numerous pits they normally throw in. but I love the sky city in Twilight Princes
Everyone else is uploading Boarderlands 2 vids. PT is uploading classic DK. Freakin win!
Okay yeah, 8-11 can be annoying. 8-9's not too bad.
Which means he actually became...
"Puts on sunglasses"
An ElectronJon.
YEAAHHHH!!
Please don't be so hard on yourself, Jon. You're a total pro to me!
the giant psychotic walrus was so epic it crashed shockwave on my computer
Weren't the ice float mechanics in the New Super Mario Bros series? I seem to recall them being in the DS version at least.
What has happened to all those Super Mario World Roms?! I loved those and I have been witing to see you do more of them! Do you have any plans to do more of them cause I really do love it when you do them and would make me what to whach your video's on this channel again. Please do some more soon.
The ice stages in Galaxy are ok.
Good luck to you sir! I am intrigued!
The hated Iceberg music really reminds me of a piece from Hans Zimmer's score to The Dark Knight Rises - specifically the opening plane heist scene.
You make this game look so easy Jon.
I know how you feel Jon, Desert levels are my major pain, ESPECIALLY if there's a hydration mechanic, or a sandworm mechanic, its so annoying! It feels like it adds an unnecesary rush
Have you played Mario VS Donkey Kong for the GBA? its a lot like the Game Boy DK.... And it'll be fun to see you fellas play Wii Sports this weekend
This is a terribly obscure reference but when donkey kong get's hit by the barrel, it makes the exact same noise as something from Space Cadets pinball on....
@themysterylad this is paula (or pauline) not peach. just wanted to point that out. @protonjonsa the crown crown crown lives thing was not in new super mario bros. for the ds. i think it started with new super mario bros wii.
why are people still complaining about his upload rate? we've been used to this for a while now
The story for the original DK game: Mario (Jumpman) is a circus owner and torments DK into doing tricks and such. That's why DK rebels and takes Pauline. This is also chronically before Bowser, so...
I can't wait for the Tower. 9-8 has my hands-down favorite track in the entire game.
Anyway, what you had to say about the walri was awesome. Just sayin'.
How are they not a mechanic? As for the use of the word "artificial", I think really it's all semantics at this point, don't you think?
Protonjon uploading videos 1 day to 2 weeks close to each other?! *World explodes*
How dare Jon provide you with free entertainment at a timetable of his own choosing. I think we should strap him to his PC so he can produce us 60 LPs a day like some sort of ProtonJon sweat shop.
You mentioning that Iceberg is your least favourite soundtrack reminds me that my most favourite is Airplane.
Why is it that ProtonJon's LP's never make it into my sub boxes? I wait for his perfectly sculpted works of art patiently then ease the tension with Chuggaaconroy and JoshJepson.

the crown icon for lives was first used on the original super mario bros :P
Jon, does your career field have anything to do with game design, or are you analyses simply gathered from years of gameplay experience? You opinions (like on the ice levels here) are very thought out and well-argued, so it sounds like you have professional experience with it.
lol, Jon talking about speedrunning 9 years ago.
He was so innocent!
I responded, reason : I can't record anything right now, I'm moving and everything's packed up!
In Mini Game Island for the first Mario Party it pretty much says play a mini-game you're good at & grind for lives
Donkey Kong kidnaps Pauline because he is infatuated with her. It's more or less just him being there at the wrong time.
5:40 Looks like Jon's been taking some TIPS from Chugga!
I agree that your not careful Jon, but the fact that you take a lot of risks is one of the things that makes you a great lper. That and the fact you have played some of the hardest game and beaten them.
HUBRIS
HUBRIS
SOO MUCH HUBRIS!
Jon had 96 lives at one point. eciN. Also yes, commenting on very old videos~
The funny thing is, I just learned what the word that john tried not to say this episode means.
Big fan first time commenter, i believe if you got to Yoshi in super Mario 64, you get 100 (i think) lives then your triple jump sparks
PLZ ProtonJon upload the 5th Part! That'll be SO AWESOME!
Whew! Finally, thank you, IOS 6! I used to be Khan44111, but I can't do that. Now, here is my new name. Thanks a lot, Apple!
man, this game has the creepiest ice level theme ever !
So Jon ice physics or invisible coin blocks, which do you hate more? ;D
I prefer the non-Christmassy music in Iceberg to the overuse of sleighbells (which would probably be tough to implement on the Gameboy's soundchip).
