I'm proud of you, sir. The first few times I heard this song, I focused primarily on the awesome music, not paying much heed to the lyrics. When I sat and paid attention to them, they hit me like a brick to the face, and that's when I appreciated how incredible this song is. I don't throw around the term "modern masterpiece" often, but God, this fits this song. I love how the song starts with only a guitar, with Sam singing of his days as a teenage hellraiser. Then the tempo kicks up, adding piano, drums, and sax, finally exploding at the end when that teen realizes that life doesn't care how badass you think you are, it will smack you down regardless. And Sam's voice... soft yet aggressive, and conveys so much hurt and passion with every word. I've listened to this dozens of times in the past year, and never grow tired of it. It's the kind of song that sticks with you, and it's the kind of song everyone should hear.
I'm posting the lyrics below for those of you who are having trouble discerning the lyrics through Sam's thick Geordie accent. For those who may need help translating the slang, "The Bizzies" are the local police, "snide fags" are cheap cigarettes; someone who is a "dab hand" is skilled at something; "canny chanter" is a good singer; the "DWP" is the Department of Work and Pensions.
I remember, the sickness was forever
    I remember snuff videos
Cold Septembers, the distances we covered
The fist fights on the beach, the Bizzies round us up
Do it all again next week, an embryonic love
The first time that it scarred
    Embarrass yourself for someone
    Crying like a child
And the boy who kicked Tom's head in
    Still bugs me now
    That's the thing it lingers
And claws you when you're down
I was far too scared to hit him
But I would hit him in a heartbeat now
    That's the thing with anger
    It begs to stick around
So it can fleece you of your beauty
And leave you spent with nowt to offer
Makes you hurt the ones who love you
You hurt them like they're nothing
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh)
You hurt them like they're nothing
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh)
You hurt them like they're nothing
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh)
See I spent my teens in rage
    Spiralling in silence
And I armed myself with a grin
'Cause I was always the fuckin' joker
    Buried in their humour
Amongst the white noise and boy's boys
    Locker room talkin' lad's lads
Drenched in cheap drink and snide fags
A mirrored picture of my old man
Oh God, the kid's a dab hand
Canny chanter, but he looks sad
God, the kid looks so sad
God, the kid looks so sad
She said the debt, the debt, the debt
So I thought about shifting gear
And how she wept and wept and wept
Luck came and died round here
    I see my mother
    The DWP see a number
She cries on the floor encumbered
    I'm 17 going under

Sam brought me here. Great reaction vid. Proof that there is no difference between nationalities, no cultural divide, no racial divide. That’s just what those in power feed us to take our eyes off the class divide. Don’t let them divide us. Our commonality scares them. Let true music unite us!

I like ‘she said the debt the debt the debt, so I thought about shifting gear, and then she wept and wept and wept, luck came and died ‘round here, I see my mother, the DWP see a number, she cries on the floor encumbered, I’m 17 going under.’ - more of a verse but it’s my favourite lyrical section

🥺💔 Great song. Never heard this before. 💔🥺
Humor is my most refined defense mechanism. Don't like to admit that. But an anonymous platform suits this confession nicely, I guess. I will download this song immediately.
