While a dumbphone sounds nice, I'd be hard pressed to give up all messaging apps for sms/mms/rcs. We had friends who did a dumb phone detox or whatever and lost contact with them for months because they weren't using messenger.

Unfortunately we live in a world where everyone by default assumes you have a smartphone, and they've basically turned into a necessity. Using a dumbphone to reduce social media addiction sounds like a nuclear option, you should start off by using digital wellbeing settings of your android phone, and then uninstalling such applications if they aren't necessary.

i'd sooner delete apps from my smartphone than buy a whole new device, but i do really enjoy keeping social media and whatnot on my desktop only. the intentionality of 'getting online' is something a lot of people talk about missing, and i think having a designated place (the pc desk) for those activities makes them a lot more enjoyable. my chums do like to use discord to organise irl stuff, so i kinda need that one, but i've never really gotten into using it for other stuff.
i've also found that not bringing a phone at all for short outings is very fun, i like being 100% unreacheable.

The reason you'd need a detox like this in the first place is because you don't have the self control to balance your life with a smart phone. In this scenario having the constant temptation of the just re-downloading apps is like going on a diet with a bucket of ice-cream in front of you all the time.

Next people should spend their time browsing (and making) simple websites and forums without user tracking, cookies, upvotes, downvotes, likes, shares, etc. People don't need to be continually engaging with social media and online discussions / arguments -- just browse a handful of websites about personal interests and check out a forum that gets only a few posts a week, and spend the rest of your time having fun or working on a hobby / skill. The Wiby search engine is a good start, but I'm sure we can take it further.

I am kinda not to keen on privating people of nowadays technology.
It can be good since nowadays tech has a really bad rep not because of it specifically but bcuz of social media. I think, rather than quitting tech, people should quit or "" detox"" from social media. If you have the willingness to give up your smartphone, I think it would be much much easier to quit social media while you can still use your smartphone to talk and search the web and look for IRL human interaction. It will have the same if not a better effect on you.

As someone who didn't saw 4G until late 2015 (and knew the reasons, mostly auctioning all analog tv which was quick on big centers but slow in smaller cities) and now aware 2G and 3G is scheduled to 2027...

I considered the dumb phone route but consider the following
    - you lose actual productive apps like your calendar, notes, cloud files, office programs, and a web browser etc
    - many people depend on chat apps like whatsapp that simply aren't on dumb phones.
    - you'll not have a decent camera to use, you'd have to carry a camera separately
    - many dumb phones are actually quite terrible to use, not because they're dumb, but because the software is slow, unresponsive, and unoptimized
I suggest deleting social media apps, only keep the chat programs you need, use features like focus mode and screen time limits on your phone to keep things under control. Way better approach in my opinion

    • @Dragoonoar

I don’t know man. Cleaning a flat screen isn’t so hard. Smartphones are great for watching UA-cam…and you’d have less views if everyone was using dumbphones. Also, dumb phones are smaller, and nowadays, even an iPhone 4 would be too small for me to properly use, as it was the proper size for me as a KID. The iPhone 12 and phones of similar sizes are a good size. It would be better if it was easier to repair smartphones like how dumbphones can be, but the alternative uses of smartphones beyond being a phone are the features people REALLY LOVE. The freedom of a smartphone is perfect for escaping from the real world…kinda like what video games can do, and dumb phones can’t run Warframe(as that was ported to smartphones a while back, mainly iOS). So people who like playing high performance mobile games NEED a smartphone. Especially as I use emulators, and how most controllers with a slot for your phone for mobile devices really only work with smartphones, and smartphones would give you the best experience, as it’s all straight screen.
Also, you don’t need to get a new phone to get away from social media. I used to use Reddit, but not anymore. I used to use Twitter, but not anymore. It didn’t take switching to a dumbphone to accomplish that.

    • @_Learnix
      @_Learnix  4 місяці тому +3

The purpose of dumbphones in essence are to be less advanced and featured than typical smartphones.
This is because people who use dumbphones are pragmatic and minimalist in nature, and do not see a need for all of those bells and whistles.
Also, escapism is usually the reason why people DON'T want smartphones, as that escapism is considered toxic and addictive, ruining your life.
And quitting social media manually with a smart device is a lot more difficult than most people think, and there wouldn't be a market for these phones if
it wasn't, it's not **just** a detox, it's a lifestyle change and some people yearn for drastic change in their lives.

You know, I was in this "hobby" with the purchase of "dumbphones," and even after trying a few options, buying them with my own money, and then reading the dumbphoblne subreddit, I realized that this is a marketing ploy about buying unnecessary devices, not a way to change my life. Ironically, even on that subreddit, they wrote that by buying a stupid phone, they began to spend more time on a laptop or TV - no digital detox at all, just a hole in their wallet. E-books, mini iPhones, flipphones, and other Android mini phones are all about keeping things the same, which is the main challenge if you embark on the path of digital minimalism or digital detox, whatever you call it.
