I graduate in a year with a bachelors in MLS and i just want to say one thing. To all the people who say MLSs get paid a lot less than RNs this is untrue. They might get paid slightly less (and Im talking like 5k a year less) but you can make a very good living. Where I live (idaho) you make like 60k a year but in some places like California you can make like 80k and up.
Another thing I want to mention is the job placement is very high and in demand. You can also further your degree with a masters or phD, which tends to open up more leadership roles and higher pay.

TheFreealexis , Thanks for sharing that. I am in my freshman year at college and I am thinking to major MLS. Even though MLS and RN are slightly different in terms of salary, do you think MLS is more complicated than RN during college years?
      Thanks

Its a very interesting field trust me. I enjoy doing this type of work but there are some things that are not mentioned in majority of youtube videos. Many job openings are at night and they usually pay more so you may end up taking it and suffer for it if you are not used to the overnight shift. Also sheer volume of samples. If you work in a diagnostic lab that's what are you going to face on daily basis.

I just passed my national Board Exam as an MLS a few days ago. I really love to work in a large lab setting, so I can see strange things and learn more from it. But, I still really appreciate the ones that have given me a chance and supported me for my very first steps.

Sorry for a delayed response. I don't know if you still need this, but I would give some advice to you anyways. Study for your board exam as soon as possible. Buy books made for board exam and practice answering them. The more you practice the more confident you are. Confidence is everything. It helps you stay calm during test and make it easier for you to pass.
After 10 years in the field, I like it. It is a very demanding career. You would never be worried about losing your job. It's always in the need of hiring. Also, the pay is decent enough to make a living. However, I love the IT part of the job more. I love working with computers since I was young, but I was clueless when I chose a career and was pressured by my family to get into healthcare industry. Well, it turned out that it was not a bad choice. But, it would be awesome if I can work in IT department, an IT career in healthcare, not just a regular "IT guy" as people would think of.

This job is absolutely important, but you don't think nurses who get puked, pooped, sneezed, and bled on, yelled at by patients, their families and tired doctors who you called at 3 in the morning to put a crucial order, have to see patients they have taken care of for days die in front of them despite all efforts, go a 12 hour shift without sitting down to eat because you literally do not have time, and yet still smile and do the job don't deserve a higher salary? Funny. Enjoy your chair all day :)

But they do have to do a lot of important and grueling work. Thinking they know more than a tech/scientist is laughable, but they definitely deserve recognition and a good pay imo.

Really depends on what your goals are. They are two different fields all together. Chemistry as a lab tech is pretty much plug and play. Still fun to learn about it, but in actual application, the machines do the work. However, as a lab tech you can do chemistry, micro, blood bank, immunology, molecular, etc.

Even if I could afford to quit my current job and do schooling to become a medical clinical scientist or technologist, I’m terribly stupid with almost all subjects but extra stupid with science and math classes.
It’s not so much that I want to be a laboratory scientist or technologist, it’s more for the job prospects abs security without being a doctor or nurse . And I’m terrible with math so forget about becoming a good businessman (or woman in my case).

Get ready for a pay cut and a loss of professional standing. Labs contribute more to the healthcare of patients than any other single discipline, and yet labs these days are always being forced to "do more with less", and to work as lean as possible.
This video shows the best side of lab work. But in reality, many administrators cut costs by cutting staff to the bone and expecting techs to work in assembly-line conditions.

I want to become a medical scientist but finding the cure for : Leukemia, Lymphoma,Cancer, Aging, Heart Disease,DiabetesType I Diabetes, Type II Diabetes
Kidney Disease and Fibrosis ,all the time and resource to cure these disease should be more focused on what we actually eat and what is present in our everyday lives. I feel the research is kinda pointless when all of these are caused by modern society. The irony hurts, America is the most prosperous country in the world and yet it is the most obese and unhealthy country in the world. All these junk foods corporation produce and chemicals the causes cancer. america is just one big facepalm , I mean look at Japan the second richest country in the world and yet it is one of longest living and healthiest people in the world. humans are just so arrogant that we can cheat death and prolong our futile and meaningless lives just so we can live a liltte itty bitty longer

This might be very, very important work but the money sucks! According to my observation & resch. Big name; important work but under supported. And the requirements are so many. You need two degrees to qualify for Lab work; one in the Biologicals the other in a CLS program that is if you qualify via a high GPA. Plus you must pass the exams to be certified which cost a crown & a pound. Such a high criteria placed for cheap labor. It is such bullshite. If you aren't planning on Medical School; possessing a Biology Degree is a complete waste of time & money. Study something else. You are better off doing a Nursing program.

I wish more people did! Geez I've been looking for THIS JOB specifically ever since I was a teenager. I wanted to be the girl who ran the tests and diagnosed. At first I thought doctors did that. Then I thought nurses did that. Nope and nope! That job falls to the medical laboratory techs and scientists

+shortie1982a Good luck! Im going to start the bachelors in a few months. Is it ..well was it hard? or challenging but doable? It's intimidating me right now because I had to choose this to do as my first choice I cannot do. Was it easier for you because maybe you like chemistry and bio and whatnot, those are not my strong subs and they intimidate me a lot. I'd appreciate a sort of detailed answer if you choose to reply to this comment because I think it might be interesting but im not sure if it is enough to keep me up...and the comments and videos on youtube that say ''if you like it you'll be fine'' doesn't really help. The most I am is interested..any tips?

I was so torn between nursing, which would give me time for a family, and being a doctor, which would be more busy but I'd be more involved with diagnostics. This seems like a pretty happy middle, especially since I prefer not to be around a lot of patients if I don't have to be. So glad I discovered MLS

Im graduated Biomedical bachelor in The Netherlands. Its an interesting study, thats for sure. If you are an organised person it will help, because your experiments always have steps were you should wait. So you need to plan your experiments very well to save time. Also because you should label your staff correctly. If you mix things up you get wrong results.
An other advantage is being handy with your hands. A certain accuracy is usually needed. For example shaking hands are not so handy if you work with small amounts. But as you advance, also your brains are getting more important, especially if you intend to do a phd. Some scientists are not even working in the lab personally. They just analyse the results, make presentations and read/write articles, which are also important skills.
Before you start your day (if you work in the lab), you always prepare some solutions. You will get used to those standard calculations very soon. You dont have to worry about that. Moreover, the results of your experiments could sometimes be complex, confusing or disappointing, but thats what drives you to go further, right.

Krizia Dela Roca Espiritu a lot of people in my program already have a degree in biology but it wasn’t enough for them to find a job or a job they wanted so they ended up doing this program now. Now a days it’s better to do something more specific and that gives you a certification on top of your degree.
