Thanks for this. This is my first winter with the Bosch heat pump, and that loud "hiss" coming from the compressor is really disconcerting! I'm glad that it's normall.
I have one and it works great. Keep an eye on your coils they are accumulating debris and grass clippings and it affects cooling and heating performance.
Don't forget guys.... Bosch energizes the reversing valve in "Heat Mode". It was De- energized, in Cool Mode, through that whole defrost cycle and then Re-energized there at the end when the fan came back on.. 😎👍 And Zack's fingers got Re-energized after he got back inside out of the cold. 😆👌😆👌😆👌
Our Goodman defrosted the coils fine but the roof was just replaced and gutters removed so there was a slab of ice on top of the unit from the freezing rainwater dripping off the roof overnight.
So I put one of these in my brothers house because he burns propane instead of natural gas and his heating bills were massive. I sized it cover his heating load till the outdoor temp got around 15 degrees. I also clandestinely shut the gas off to his furnace just to see when he would call and complain. Turns out it ran all last year without him needing the furnace and we had several 0 degree days this winter when it kept up fine and he didn’t even notice his house was a few degrees below the stat temp until the blower on the furnace failed. I think this defrost cycle was the saving grace because I totally forgot I’d shut the gas off!
@@joshuav3445 usually efficient heat pumps beat propane on the energy bill. Unless you get cheap propane or expensive electricity. His cooling bill went way down and and his heating bill was similar to what it cost him to run his old 10seer in July.
The inverter board died this spring which is frustrating but the warranty process is seamless and shipping was quick. The Bosch ain’t perfect but the people are good to deal with.
Hey man i had one installed by an installer i wont mention. Mine runs constantly in cool. I need to get it set up right. I dont have the money to pay a pro. Is this something i can do on my own? I think the dip switches and the overcool need changed.
@@Keith_Mikell that’s more likely an issue with the thermostat circuit. Most heat pumps need a reversing valve input to run in cooling but the Bosch needs one to run in heat. A reputable service company can probably find the problem and resolve it in 30 minutes. You can also figure it out yourself if you’re handy by googling the manuals for your outdoor unit, your thermostat and maybe your air handler. If you can understand those you can save yourself maybe $150-200. But If there is a problem with the Bosch itself (like a burnt out reversing valve solenoid coil , stuck valve slide, or defective pcb) you’d need a contractor to diagnose and facilitate applicable warranties anyway, so I’d advise you to get someone out there. If you’re worried about costs just call around to well reviewed companies and ask them what their service/diagnostic fees are.
Heat pumps are really becoming a popular choice up here due to the large government rebates given out for HP’s. It’s just so damn cold here from December to February. Was cool to see that Bosch on action
@@sknight0391 I’ve been doing well. We had our third and final baby. Works been steady, service calls are coming in. Keeping up with my UA-cam channels while being HVAC dad lol. How have you been Shannon ? How’s work on your end ?
Mine just did this last night for the first time and I thought everything broke. I was literally holding the covers over my chin with just my eyes out thinking, "that's it... It blew up already....". One thing that does kind of suck is once the defrost cycle is over, I noticed it took a while to go back into heating... I wonder if that defrost cycle counts towards my thermostat setting of "minimum compressor run time" of 15 minutes, so I have to wait 15 min after a DF to get heat...? NO Aux on this unit. Also curious if you had a crank case heater installed?
Noisier then my Carrier, but nice. What's you average daily operating cost down there? My Carrier is about $10 a day. With average temps. in the 20's during the day and single digits over night.
I'm aboit to get one of these to pair with a new Regal RSM 600 oil furnace. Hopefully I made the right decision. It'll be better than what I had though (45 year old oil furnace and 25 year old Trane central air which hasn't been able to cool my house in the 10 years I lived here). I only have concerns with how it'll handle humidity
I tell my customers to spray off their outside units every year before A/C of every time they mow etc if weeds/cut grass gets slung on it... That thing needed a simple hose bath. You would be surprised of how much money and time you can save by just spraying it out good every year with a simple water hose!! Before it can build up and clog etc. Use weed/ grass killer 2ft around unit if you must to avoid grass clippings.
That is for sure a lot of ice on the coil defrost cycle should have been started before it got to this point Zack you might wanna check your defrost sensor or adjust the timer don’t know how it is on the Bosch unit
Had a Bosch installed this summer. It just started defrosting now, didn’t realize how loud it would be. We live in a townhouse, so I’m sure I will be real popular with the neighbors when this happens at 3am. 🤦♂️
Correct. Our neighbor installed one between our houses (our bedroom on that side) and it's annoying all through the night. We are now looking at (expensive) ways to reduce the noise coming through our 2 windows; they are double glazed.
@@Schri1 oh no, I can imagine that’s annoying. Luckily our neighbour said she doesn’t hear it while inside. I thought about building a small partition fence around it, but that might actually amplify the sound rather than deaden it.
Hi Zack. Question: Since the Bosch Condenser doesn't get R (24VAC) from the furnace, how does it power the W (heat) terminal to initiate backup heat during defrost? The only signal that is energized at the condenser during defrost is Y, so I assume it shorts Y to W. Thoughts?

What was his electric bill like compared to propane? We are closing on a new house and had a Bosch system installed.

why does roaring noise coming from the compressor?

I wondered the same actually ...
he could have been in aux mode for some time before the outdoor temp came up enough to call the heatpump
Is the defrost cycle as loud as it sounds in this video? That would wake me up at night if it is.
How is the heat output on it? Ive got the BOVA 1.0 and its about useless below 20 degrees.
Just as an observation, mine does well near 20. We do not get many nights colder than 20 degrees here.
if you look in the manual 19 is where the delta T goes to shit i set my changeover to 20 or 25
Question, during defrost mode, does your air handler inside continue blowing warm air to the house? Were Heat strips installed?
My system without heat strip, air handler blowing cold air :((

Where are you located? Is the Bosch units good for Massachusetts as a single source of heat?
with electric backup in the air handler you are likely ok, if you have gas or propane ide pair it with the bgh96 instead

I believe it has a transformer in the outdoor unit.
Interesting that it isn't on a snow stand.
No snow here
Where's the hot gas bypass defrost? Bosch is slipping.
Hot gas bypass is not a typical feature on residential HVAC systems.
It’s ok to clean your own coil, Zach.
Yea. That’s neglected
Is that a Bosch inverter?
Yup
Probably pull all the leaves and debris off coil...
Damn that thing is like a Cadillac
That's a lot of yard debris on the coil.
Yup.
Any concerns with wind or wind gust affecting the performance? Since side discharge inverter heat pumps are very concerned about external wind.
