Sir Thomas Beecham / Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Live at the Edinburgh Festival, 20 August 1956
I don't think there is a recording by Beecham that I do not like and enjoy. There are indeed some recordings by others that I prefer, but I still enjoy Beecham. He had a unique 'voice' ... one that was uncompromising and exciting and I love that about him. I am also so glad he allowed Brahms to have 'muscles', instead of the so so MANY performances that are flabby and downright mimzy, if you know what I mean by that. Hooray for Sir Thomas!!
Delectable winds, and the horns!
The rap on Sir Thomas was that the 'big' ones sometimes eluded him-but no lesser music ever did. I think this is a profoundly good live performance of one of the 'big' ones-and like the post below, it brings out the charm and melodic invention of the piece that more ponderous ones can miss...
@Oliver Klecker So funny, this scamming spam. Reported to UA-cam-but will that ever work? And, will this illegal scam really work? Only to get the money of desperate ex's I'm afraid...😜
@Joshua Grey But I give you credit; having a fictitious reply making it sound like this scam works is less lazy than some. But once you've seen "Oliver" and "Joshua" a few times on other uploads, Kinda blows the con...😂
I completely agree with you.
Q hermosa version en vivo, los timbales siguen la partitura o se pasan un poco? , lo hace mas emocionante!!!Beecham siguiendo la orquesta en voz alta, muy lindo y brahms como siempre el compositor romantico ppr excelencia, genio!!
judging by that picture, someone is raising the subject of contemorary music again, with the maestro
Makes this piece sound completely natural - and you can hear the motifs clearly.
But ... IV is a bit of a scramble.
Is he yelling in the 4th movement?
Probably!
Goodness, yes! Unbridled exhortations of a driver of that Lola-Ford of an orchestra down that Brahms straightaway on the last lap (a couple of laps before as well)! Actually, a relatively modest "Allegro con spirito" if you ask me. Not circa 1988 Kleiber or Toscanini at his most hyperkinetic, but the articulation, detail and emphatically lit last movement (and last moment...milk that one with the phantom fermata right through the applause, Sir Thomas!)...WOW!
zounds!
