- In tonight's top story: The scope of the damage from the Jasper, Alta., wildfire is much clearer now, as Parks Canada says 358 structures in the town have been destroyed - about 30 per cent of the townsite. As Heather Yourex-West explains, most critical infrastructure has survived the fire.
The Olympic games officially got underway Friday in Paris, with an opening ceremony that was the first of its kind. Rather than the usual parade of nations unfolding inside a single major venue, athletes from around the world sailed through the city on the Seine River. Crystal Goomansingh is in Paris with more.
Canada's chance to shine on the opening day of the Olympic games was dimmed by scandal, rocking Canada Soccer. The head coach of the women's team was sent home from the Paris Olympics late Thursday over allegations of spying on other teams with drones. As Eric Sorensen reports, Canada Soccer's CEO is calling out a "systemic ethical shortcoming" in the organization.
The Crown dishonourably breached the Robinson Treaties and must negotiate a settlement with First Nations within six months, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled. In a ruling Friday, the Supreme Court said the Ontario and Canadian governments had a mandatory obligation to raise that amount when economic circumstances warranted. David Akin has more.
Plus, a missing cat has been reunited with its family, eight years after she was first lost. Indie the cat was found a very long way from home, across at least one bridge. Matilda Cerone visited Indie's family, to see how she's adjusting to being back home after all these years.

In California homes must resist earthquakes, in Florida hurricanes, and in China cities build against floods. In Canada we build houses out of wood in forest fire zones, allow ember-trapping wooden decks, lack bylaws preventing combustible materials being stored against structures, or distances trees must be from homes. Many communities in the US build municipal golf courses as fire breaks and utilize their underground water storage if there's a fire. Not in Canada. When wildfire fighters hastelly install structural protections, it's basically sprinklers on rooftops. Anyone could do it in advance from home hardware, but nope. Eventually insurance companies will force change because we're too stupid to protect ourselves.
As a Canadian residing abroad my wife and I will cherish the memories of our Jasper visit in Jan of 2024
you are lucky,, i live right beside jasper but it is so expensive there i cant afford to visit.. they got the tourist pricing going on there
Why, you can always find an inexpensive way to visit, eg. Camping instead of stayingin a hotel, buying food from a supermarket instead of eating in a restaurant...@happyfisherman4432
Our parents spent their honeymoon in Jasper. Went by train from Montreal. Stayed at the Jasper Park Lodge. This tradition will not end. Jasperites are tough mountain people. All our hearts go out to them, be strong!
Yeah, this is so sad!! Jasper was my favorite Canadian town/park!!
No more. Its not pretty any more for the next 60 years
Me too spent many months there

Why is the Govt. burning down the forests
These folks will rebound because westerners are super generous. And life is irreplaceable. Possessions are.
20 000 of us residents and visitors made it out alive. That what truly matters. When the dust settles we will return to rebuild our beloved town. Decades of horrible forest management caused this perfect storm. We in Jasper all saw it coming. It was a “when”not “if” I called it back in April looking at those mountains of dead timber. “The first week of hot weather, this valley will light up.”And here we are. our wonderful community displaced and watching our town and businesses go up in flames.
Down with the British Crown System in Canada,,,
Imagine you found out that this tragedy was in fact calculated and committed through full support of the Canadian government and some of our citizens, in order to grab the land from the long time residents is Jasper.
That’s Gaza. Except Gaza is a lot worse.
Jasper the Bear Survived the Fire! Long Live Jasper!
I had my picture taken with Jasper back in the '80s. That's good to know. I hope the people are o.k....
IM STILL STANDING
When people are living this far out from the ocean people should have sprinkler system in their houses and on top of them.
How about the government uses our carbon taxes to buy water bombers to put out the fires before it gets that out of control? Instead, sparkle socks is sending our money to Ukraine.
Don t give it to the red cross if you want the people of Jasper to have it
Bingo!!
What if you want their ceo to get it?
Our carbon tax should go toward forest management . I can't think of a better clean air initiative than that .
Our taxes should go towards a bill that puts the people that did this in jail, government departments have been putting up laser satellites for decades waiting to do this once they lost control of the population. How many weapons are in space for this purpose?
@@togowack TIN FOIL HAT ALERT!!!
@@philster6383 Do you think its a coincidence these extreme events keep happening amid political turmoil? A regime stealing elections in Canada doing everything it can to stay in power and distract the people? Alberta is their primary enemy.

And as usual the MSM ignores the real question. Why wasn't the fuels reduction work done around this town years ago? Not just Jasper, but dozens of other towns. Lots of talk and lots of urban based 'xspurts' and endless studies but nothing actually happening on the ground.
Ask Trudeau, Jasper National Park is federal jurisdiction! He probably gave to Ukraine all the funds for National Park forest management. This is where your CARBON TAX GO, at the pocket of Zelensky!
alberta just cut their fire fighting services funding too didnt they>
I don't think you understand how forest ecology and national parks work buddy.
Fire guards regrow. Very expensive and citizens may not "like" clearing near their properties. No one understands. Fires are smarter than we are.
@@JBonhomme-n4m They don't near fully cleared guards. Just thinning and removeable of ladder fuels and permanent tracks/ trails that can also double for recreation will reduce the hazard dramatically.
Rise back resilient Jasper Townspeople. May God touch people's heart to give back to your beautiful town in their own way. Stay strong Jasper.
October 7th !! Does anyone remember??
if only that cat could talk, imagine the stories it would tell from its 8 year adventure. and do you think someone kept it indoors for 8 years and only let it go now?
I feel so much empathy for Jasperites ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
After 8 long years, the cat probably had alot to talk about ...
1250 bucks. Are they serious?
Yup the government isn’t for the people you know that right?
You mean, because theyre just Canadians. Probably right.
Billions for Ukraine etc
Did they have insurance?
That's only for emergency response, by Emergency Support Services standards. People are expected to carry insurance beyond that and should rely on their insurers. I am not sure what happens to those with no insurance. This is awful indeed.
Jasper the bear: IM STILL STANDING
Here in BC right now we have 406 wildfires every summer peoples homes burn so we know how the people in Jasper feel I lived in Jasper for 20 years and it is a shame to see what has happened and I feel sorry for the people who lost there homes I think it is time the Fed Gov helps us it is so bad we can not handle this by ourselves the fires are to big and there is to many of them
There is no coordinated emergency response agency in Canada yet. Right now the need is becoming obvious, especially in shared federal and provincial or territorial jurisdictions.
Since 2019, the UCP has gutted Alberta's fire fighting capability by a whopping $30-million, roughly a 25% reduction. The UCP eliminated Alberta's elite wildfire-fighting crew of 63 firefighters stationed across the province. The program had been in service for over 40 years. The UCP made the cuts and ignored warnings from experienced firefighters. The UCP is leading Alberta into literal disaster.
Prove it !! Articles/links ???
@outinspace8760
Nice try.
You sort of wasted your time writing that. Jasper is a national park. It falls under federal jurisdiction. Alberta is willing to lend a hand. But it's the federal government who has the final say on how it's handled.
Both Notley NDP and UPC had cut firefighting budgets. Regardless, the fire started on the "national" park, managed by Parks Canada, a federal jurisdiction. Trudeau government fails big time, spending more money on the east than the west, creating an enormous national deficit, sending money to foreign aids, spending money recklessly in ArriveCan scandal, WE foundation scandal, and scandal after scandal. Now impose new Carbon Tax and Capital Gain Inclusion Rate Tax, but the money still goes to greedy bureaucrats and their associated organizations, and useless public service agencies.
@@-Ordinary-Average-Guyyes as the Albert Govt watched all burn so the rich can buy up 1/3 of Jasper!
@@-Ordinary-Average-Guy The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) is a not-for-profit corporation owned and operated by the federal, provincial and territorial wildland fire management agencies to coordinate resource sharing, mutual aid, and information sharing. In addition, CIFFC also serves as a collective focus and facilitator of wildland fire cooperation and coordination nationally and internationally in long-range fire management planning, program delivery and human resource strategies. More often than not first responders are a local detachment. As you can imagine, they are most concerned with putting out the fire ASAP so the closest detachments respond.
It’s pretty sad that our government can give billions of dollars to fund war in Ukraine but can only spare $1250 per person in Jasper considering it’s there fault this happened. Government should be rebuilding it all free of charge ! In fact every born Canadian citizen should be entitled to their own property and home free of charge !
I feel for these people. Many of our community just lost a whole heck of a lot in our fire.
@AellaMaude-oy9qn I feel for anyone who undergoes any tragedy. I don’t see where your issue is. ANY hardship in anyones life is horrible. And anywhere you li e has its risks. Tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, heat, fires. No where is anti risk.
RIP Jasper it was one of my favorite places to visit but now it's all burned down by forest fires🔥 😢😢😰
Government should keep clean and remove dry and dead Woods and Debris from the Forest through whole year to prevent wild fire.
I’m in shock really even though I’m out of town but still I’m suffering for it.
I was hoping Banff and jasper were going to be bigger citys but then this happand.😮
Here we go, Trudeau is going to raise the Carbon Tax again!
It's donation time folks, this historic town and mountain park playground needs to be rebuilt bigger and better... the world holidayers depend on it.
Dont let the government increae the carbon tax cause of this
If Alberta kept the Provincial plan , they could have invested all that money into forest management instead of giving it all to the Fed's.
This is their excuse to raise it. Fighting climate change and arsonists at the same time is big business.

If you do the math Increasing payments at the rate of inflation and including compounded interest it comes nowhere near $10 billion
We must live up to our agreements but stop bankrupting the country to buy off a community that can never be satisfied.
My guess is that annual welfare payments and social assistance and infrastructure payments to these Indian bands will far far exceed the $4 per person including inflation and interest
I guess Canadians aren't paying enough carbon taxes to prevent these wildfires yet.

Your Cat will be & stay much more healthy and will live longer if you keep your Cat indoors. She's now at least 8 yrs old (missing for 8 yrs) so maybe make sure she doesn't get outside again because if she does again, there's a good chance they will never see her again because of her age.
May Love Peace Prevail In The World....
What did everyone think of the "last supper" display and other things that happened.
I feel so awful for those Canadians out West who are losing homes and/or businesses to rampant fires. I know the Canadian Red Cross will do all they can to help, and we Canadians not affected must step up to support that effort.
Look up what the CEO's salary is who runs the red cross. You might have second thoughts before donating. I made that mistake when I donated to them during the Fort McMurray fires.
Hopefully Ukraine and the other countries we throw money at, will step up to the plate and help us rebuild jasper.
Meanwhile trudeaus surfing in tofino he couldnt be bothered . Remember that people come voting time
1250 payment… that’s a insult… my tax dollars are going to Ukrain…. Claw it back and give it to the Canadians in jasper… this is sad and wrong
Sending Ukraine aid to fight a totalitarian enemy of our country is cheap compared to putting our own troops on the ground. Are you a Russian sympathizer? Would you want the rest of the world to stand by and let the United States invade us and occupy our land if they wanted?

Two million people visit Jasper every year. Surely this has a significant impact environmentally. maybe it’s time for a lottery and restricted access to a pristine area like this? Danielle Smith should be held responsible for not supporting fire prevention and fire fighting in Alberta.
You are the carbon they seek to reduce.
A lottery to visit places in your own country... imagine the dystopia we'd live in if you had your way

Jasper reels and a long lost cat returns home..., bitter ironies! But the female soccer Olympic team had it worse!
They voted for this.
@dembipor ucp voters voting for a conspiracy theorist that cut over 350 million dollars in fire funding citing "climate hysteria" and blaming "unsettled science." These cuts made despite the Province having the contract to complete fire suppression in national parks through the CWFIS and receiving over 300 million dollars for said contract. But hey, they destroyed healthcare, education, infrastructure, and have overseen over 300,000 job losses whilst cutting 44bn in private investment in green energy. Look at that big 4.5bn surplus for all that!

So generous of France to share the limelight, that sail down the Seine opening ceremony looked spectacular!!

UCP Danielle Smith is responsible for that Jasper Alberta disaster!
Please... I'd love to hear your fairy tale rationale about how Smith was personally responsible for the Jasper fire.
Actually it was the clown before her , she increased the budget for wildfire fighting . All of the carbon tax that you pay should have been kept in province instead of giving it to the Fed's. She does have the option of getting that back and doing something good with the money but that would go against PP 's agenda.
Jasper is a national park. Federal jurisdiction. If you remember, a few years ago,
JT promised water bombers to fight future fires. As usual, he was just speaking out of his azz again because he did absolutely nothing.
