I'll Tell You EXACTLY Why Manor Lords Looks So Good

- Manor Lords, a game that gives you the ultimate Medieval town building and management experience for a (planned) extremely reasonable price of $30 or 25 euros. You’re a lord or lady who’s gained a bit of land in the countryside, you’ve got this opportunity to turn it into a thriving bustling village, then a growing and prospering town and all the way up to a mighty Mediaeval city.
You get to cultivate the land through farming and mining, you get to trade with a network of other villages, towns and merchants, from peaceful growth to aggressive territorial expansion. This is the quintessential Medieval strategy game I’ve always dreamed of. And excitingly the game is still set for release in 2023 so in the next few months.
Today I want to talk about why Manor Lords looks so good, why it's got such popular support behind it's development and impending release and especially compared to other stagnating major strategy games, why I'm placing my bets that it will be the kind of breathe of fresh air that we need to kickstart proper innovation in the genre.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this video and found it informative. If you did give it a like and drop any thoughts or questions in the comments section below. Make sure to join the Manor Lords discord and subscribe to the channel for future updates, news & videos. Thanks for watching guys!

Can I get a thumbs up for proper historical strategy games?
@@juliusdamsholt1222 No
you mentioned Age of empires 4 - have you played it? it actually really good. I wouldnt mind a video or two on it. Especially since it got a Expansion coming up :)
@Rex1987 I have indeed :) I’m not as big a fan but I could consider making a few videos :)
@@trebuchet8568If you still have the files from back when, just go to the game files in your computer, you should find the launcher in there, and should be able to play from there. Did it for a couple of months after the test ended. Hope this helps!
@@trebuchet8568 locate the file and launch the .exe file and you can play it.
This for $30 compared to Pharaoh $60 is just crazy. The manor lords dev actually listens to the players and is putting in so much work and he still makes it affordable.
i would love to spend 60$ on Manor lords and i will spend 0$ on Pharaoh.
If you think Pharaoh will only cost $60 to have a playable game your kidding yourself! Will be more like $100!
@@apatheticnoncombatant7750 Nah people play it all the time. There is a closed Alpha going on has been for quiet some time. Pharao looks also good though so
@@apatheticnoncombatant7750a) true
b) wrong. EA is releasing this year and they will announce the day of release in October.
c) also wrong. We are getting new screenshots all the time and even short glimpses of gameplay (like recently at the save and sound music festival stream.
d) the demo was not only really promising but the game is currently being played by over 120 testers. Many of whom you can interact with on discord.
It will release in EA with a lot of final content missing, but it is definitely a functioning game. Yes people who are too hyped and have way too high expectations, they ignore the game is developed by one guy so a lot of the content will still not be there, will probably be disappointed. It’s not really a total war competitor anyways, that’s not what it’s going for. Have you played the demo? I have. I don’t know of any city builder that plays and looks as good and goes for historical accuracy.
that's 60 for the game, another 5 for blood and then another 10-15 for each new culture that's supposed to be very relevant in the region during this time period and you're looking at $200+ for the "full" Pharaoh experience
I hope Manor Lords goes for quality over quantity with its battles. Having 10,000 troops on the field in Total War is cool but I'd rather there be really good battle mechanics and AI with 100 troops.
Especially if you think of medieval times...dukes had like 100, 200 soldiers. It seems realistic as well with those numbers.
well it depends the scale, crusader armies were huge. english or french army were big too
No. Rather total war. This looks garbage.
@@ellasims551 yeah but if you were a local lord living out of a manor and running a village or two...you're gonna have only a small amount
Looking at the scope of the game, I think the battle won't be at the total war scale. Afterall, at its core,it's a city management game but with added extra features of warfare.
I don't know man, we've been abused by AAA games so much, that when I look at Manor Lords, I ask myself "Where's the catch? This is too good to be true"
Continue to think that way, because it most likely is too good to be true. And this game has yet to prove itself.
The catch is that nobody has played it yet, no true independent gameplay footage nor experience, which is essential for strategy games.
@@josearaujo8616 Well you got a taste of from the demo. It has promise, but it's annoying how people fall for the same trap over and over with overhype, staged screen shots and videos.
I could give it a pass if it wasn't a strategy game. We need the full game to form an opinion, except from the graphic engine, which in this case looks very dated.
@@josearaujo8616 You don't think the graphics look good enough? I'm not really picky with graphics, since I tend to play a lot of pixel games, but this looks good enough to me. What strategy game has better graphics?
Manor Lords has a release date on Steam now. It's April 26th, 2024!
Remember, manor lords' combat trailer showed active retreat YEARS before Total War Pharaoh did the same thing. It is a feature the community spent decades asking for that CA just so happens to implement after they get public backlash from an indie dev making a tangentially related game doing it first.
I've spoken to Slavic a couple times, and he very clearly cares DEEPLY about first making the game historical, then making the game fun within that. Something you really don't need to leave behind for something like this. I remember noticing some of the equipment, kind of just on the verge of full plate making its debut on the battlefield, and the styles of helms and weapons, and asking about the period. I figured 1380-1400 or so, and I was right (there are a couple distinct changes that happen from 1400-1430 or so). The fact he worked not to go outside of this much, maybe there are some old pieces laying around, tells me how deeply he cares about the immersion. And that is AMAZING to me.
Now, that isn't to say we won't see equipment from 1424 or something, it wouldn't surprise me if we could advance in tech a few decades as the game progresses, but just in talking to him about this stuff (and the architecture, and the clothing, I was able to get the area ALMOST right, I thought it was central HRE, it is more like the Rhineland and low countries) it is very clear to me he doesn't just think history is neat, he LOVES it.
I hope there is no auto replenishment for troops. Each soldier on the battlefield should have a home in or near your village.
It seems wrong to always have auto replenishment, when in reality, if all the peasants of a village died in battle, there would be no one left to replace them and there would also be no economy left after. It would make just entering into war a much more daunting prospect.
I completely agree with you. I'm just hoping for men at arms units.
Older total war games, I think it was Rome, had each city having a population and recruiting actually decreased the population by however many men were in the cohort. To replenish you had to move the unit back to a city that could build that unit and spend a turn recruiting new troops.
@@user-zp4ge3yp2o Why was this even taken out? Seems like a sensible gameplay feature.
@@mhjmstultiens I have no idea, every total war game seems to throw out all the old systems and make new ones.
That would definitely be a hard-core change up from the typical RTS games. I like that. (maybe optional though for the more casual folks)
Completely agree 💯 i used to love strategy games especially TW but havent actually brought one in years due to there lack of ambition and obvious disregard to there fans. Looking forward to ML and hopefully the big companies will see this games success and start listening to there fans giving us what we want!
Exactly!
The only good with the new TW titles is the modding community, aside from wanting Attila for Dawnless Days no new titles interest me. Manor Lords looks absolutely epic and would satisfy that peaceful building side some of us crave while playing TW.
Honestly this game NEEDS to succeed. Because if it does the bigger companies will copy it and improve upon it. Imagine a total war game that focuses on this kind of city building rather than the system they've used for the last 20 years. Doing this in different time periods would be incredible. I don't think Id be able to put it down.
The fact that a solo developer can do this project just really shows how little effort AAA companies into making quality games for us (CA I’m looking at you). I’m just so happy for this project as I’ve been craving for a similar games for many years now so I’m really hoping this will be a success. Based on the demo it already looked great so I can’t wait to see what it’ll be like when it’s ready. It’s also reasonable priced and I’ll be gladly give my money to support such a passion project.
I really don't get why alot of the bigger companys won't let their community's engage in testing and developing the game. A good example for it to work for bigger company's is Anno 1800. The community tested and suggested over years of development and the game got a huge success for the company.
Baldur's Gate 3 did the same and it gave us an amazing Act 1 and 2.
I've always had a similar idea for a game in my head since i was a child in the late 90s/early 2000's growing up playing Age of Empires 2, Stronghold and city builder games like Anno 1503, Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom and so on. I always dreamt of this more laid back Age of Empires or Stronghold hands on approach combined with the city builder aspects of games like Anno and the Impression games city builder games. Playing as a lordship or city state doing trade, diplomacy and warfare on a smaller, more intimate scale than Total War. In theory I guess that's exactly what you are doing in Emperor: Rise of the middle kingdom. But you have too little agency over warfare in that game. And diplomacy is rather limited. I'm so happy to see someone else (more competent than I would ever be) realize someting very similar:D
I STILL play the demo from time to time. Because there is no better feeling in any other game when you build a new settlement. Even with the little content it has it's fun anyways. Can't wait for the full release this year!
It’ll release in EA so a lot of content will come later especially the more complex warfare stuff (small skirmishes will already be in the game).
@@raskolnikov6443 yeah but it will have a lot more content then the demo. And even then it was fun to play. That was my argument ;)
How do you play the demo mine stopped working
How do you play the demo?
This game will give us what we need and push other companies to make proper games.
This game has to go viral among strategies! It's really nice seeing this improvement being delivered just from one guy, one developer that showes how to make games💪🏼
I was blown away with the demo last year with all that was playable then. Game makers like Slavic M is rare and should be and will be applauded 👏
This is the one game I will preorder based on principle. Had a blast with the demo.
How is that principle of preordering formulated in words?
@@CreatorOfWorlds I believe that principle would be "based on the integrity and earnest of vision of a developer lacking the near infinite resources that a well-established corporate game dev would possess, while acknowledging that said corporate dev are unable to innovate a fraction of what this indie dev can with said near-infinite resources. Now go forth and spread the good word dear bot.
I hope that is the dawn of a new era for strategy games and after manor lords we will see more stuff like that
I'm so excited for this, I feel like I have been waiting for an RTS like this for years
This may be too hopeful, but I think it'd be quite cool if it worked similar to dwarf fortress, where you are one fortress, or town in this case, within a much larger civilisation, so if your civ ends up in a war, you raise your levies, and join other levies raised from other towns to face the enemy civ who has done the same, but during the battle, you can only command your own levy, while other lords command their own.
I know this game is much smaller in scope than that, but you never know what could come down the line.
This is the exact kind of game I want. It’s fresh and the demo was a ton of fun. Looking forward to it
Incredible video with an even better message for the industry, very well done! Thanks
ooohhh can't wait for this one bro!! thanks for covering
Turn consumers into collaborators, fans into helpers. Such a simple clear message. And don't piss us off just for your profits.
Manor Feels like New Era Age of Empires honestly. It looks and feels like a successful Re-branding. Take note Creative Assembly
First time finding one of your videos, subscribed, you've got a really easy to watch and enjoyable style. Keep it up
Thanks! ❤️
Love these talk videos about the current game developements and so forth. A game people should check is 0 AD Its also a passion project that was originally meant as a mod for Age of Empires 2. It became its own game and now 16 years later it has still an active playerbase. The game focusses on being historically accurate with the buildings, units and landscape and has a somewhat different playstyle then AoE2. Its an open source game wich means that it is also free to download, just type in the name and you wil find it.
loved the Manor Lord demo. Absolutely can't wait for it to be released.
"What goes up, must come down" Or put in a more Dramatic way "Empires rise and fall". Lets face it, all of our Favorite Series/Games are 10 years to 20 years old at this point. And for better or worse and come what may, i think its time to pass the Torch, Crown, Throne, (you get the idea) to the NEXT GENERATION. Which in this case happens to be Indie Game Devs, and frankly, more power to them.
After all, AAA Chases Trends and Sticks to what it knows, Indie Devs are the ones doing all the innovating and breaking new ground. Whole NEW genre have been crafted and forged in the fires of Indie Development over the past few years. They are also the one keeping old and otherwise forgotten genre's alive and well.
Great video looking forward to the game
This game looks and feels authentic. Can't wait to try this.
Feeling the anticipation! Hope it’s fun with a big player base if it’s good
seeing that battle formation, gives me so many memories.
total war medieval 1 and 2 was the strategy game from my childhood.
i already given up on total war for a new medieval game,i hope slavic has tremendous success.
il be playing this game for sure.
Thanks for a great video! The music in this video is awesome? Where is it from? Is it your own choices or is it music from the manor lords demo?
Its from the demo :)
Community engagement is always a good sign, BG3 was so good for this reason, being involved with the players and listing to feedback is what really yields high quality games. That and treating the product as an actual piece of art and having passion for what you create, unlike alot of games that are just corporatized.
Late to the party, but I agree with every last thing you said 100%. Slavic Magic had a vision, and he responded to a wounded and dying market with something truly revolutionary, something that millions of strategy gamers have been dying for, for years now. This *is* going to be the strategy genre market’s response to BG3. And all in a very affordable $30/€25 package. This game is going to make Slavic, and everyone working with him, quite wealthy - and all of them (especially Slavic) deserve every last dime they get!
It's not revolutionary. Did you not play the demo?
@@mdc3227 I did, and I thought it was something very fresh. What’s not revolutionary about it in your eyes?
Every fucking dime 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excited for this
So excited for this game!!
Looks like its gonna be one of the best ever cant wait!
Can't wait, it's everything I wanted out of the stronghold series, be cool to see if you can build castles in this eventually even if sieges are wayy far off but even if they don't and even if they segment the map so it's not seamlessly running from your town to others it'll still be amazing (and that could make it even better because then you could have truly massive world maps with dozens of towns even on lower end machines and huuuge maps on high end pcs)
+1 to wanting a castle/wall building element...promising game for sure
Great vid, earned a sub 👍
Wish it actually cost a bit more! Want to make sure Slavic can keep updating it for free into the future or just be rewarded for the amazing work!
Im excited for this one!
There is no Dev team, it's one guy. Which is even more amazing
Added to my wishlist.
I'm so excited for this game, it's like a dream came true!
i am genuinely excited about this game.
simply just cant wait for this since playing the demo last year
I am so looking foward to this since the demo last year.
It will be a great game to finally take a break from Total War (until CA managers make something right).
And it will also define the new era of City builders.
My most anticipated game
First time hearing about the game and now Im super excited! Wish I had a bunch of money to give to this man for giving the players a refreshing game we need at this point 😂
I've seen a couple of channels cover this now; really looking forward to release!
I’m here for ANY manor lords content and discussion lol
Amazing!
I can't wait for this game. 😇
Looks insanely good, a dream come true
Manor lords looks like a combination of KCD , Total war and Banished. I loved it
I cant wait!! the resources placed in neighboring territories will make for a very interesting dynamic for diplomacy or invasion for more resources.
Man, this game is gorgeous and your content is very well done😊 I'm working as back-end dev from almost a year and I try to understand every day since, how 1 person can do everything?? Maybe he has a tiny team and so on...imposible to do it alone.
Thanks! ❤️
This game will make winter time for me a lot more bearable. Ive been craving more ever since i played the demo from dusk til dawn. Ive been waiting for a med city builder like this for so long they have included everything ive always wanted so far and even more than i wouldve ever thought of. Total war needs to take some notes.
It's everybody's dream come true strategy game and I hope that creative assembly actually watch as a new competitor has entered the historical strategy genre. If I were creative assembly I'd be nervous.
Im sure everyone watching this knows this already but for those of you who maybe dont, this game is currently being developed by a solo developer named Slavic Magic. The fact that he is building a game to this scale with this much detail on his own with minimal one off hired work is a feat in its self. Im stoked for this to come out soon
At this point the game is pretty viral, why doesn’t he crowdfund it and get some devs in to help him. I’m not too hopeful with a single dev. Too many bugs
@@markmiller6111 it’s a good point. I think I saw a few times on reddit that he’s getting help on certain aspects of the development process. At any rate there’s likely to be bugs I agree, but I think him being a solo dev with minimal outside help will lighten the blow for things like that. Speaking for my self, I will for sure have more patience for things like that for a game like his, rather then say a new COD.
THIS LOOKS AWESOME. KUDOS MAN IM LOOKING INTO THIS!!
Lately I have stopped playing the medieval type of games and started playing WW2 games. I have been so fascinated by the military set ups, tactics, strategies, systems..etc I learnt a lot about tanks, half tracks, aviation, naval battles.etc Mainly playing Company of Heroes 2, Men of War 2 Assault Squad, Hearts of Iron 4, Division Steel 2..etc
Weirdly enough, I have zero desire to go back to the medieval/sword era...
You folks should give it a try. It helps to watch first epic documentaries about battles. I HIGHLY recommend 'Battlefield S1/E1 - The Battle of France' and the following episodes. It's so raw, and brilliantly narrated.
I really cant wait for this game its like lords of the realm series meets stronghold and totalwar
Many thanks for excellent review .very reasonably priced and looks great.just hope developer doesn't sell out to one of the major game developers and works on further similar strategy games perhaps even a historical game and show CA how it could be done or should be done . Again many thanks excellent review
I hope it comes this year 🙏🏻
I have the demo installed in my PC. Yesterday I played again, the immersion that game offer is amazing, I am anxious the game be release.
cant wait it looks so good
I just can't wait for this game...I know I am going to spend so many hours init...Hope it will release soon.
Now heres a game im all about buying.
Urban fortifications and lighting of pedestrian routes and important places should be accessible. Using torches, etc. A bit like the atmosphere of The Guild 2. Palisades, defensive towers made of wood or stone, strongholds, barracks, ditches, and gates were famous in the Middle Ages.
I can't wait for both Manor Lords and Falling Frontier
Looks great
I am watching this game too and hope it will be good.
This is just amazing (I’m first)
I check up on dev progress so often with this one. I haven't been so hyped for a game since Half-Life 2. Legit the only game I would conceivably pre-order, unless TW: Medieval or Napoleon got a sequel
Looks like stronghold meets total war
This has been my most anticipated game for a little over a year now! I have to be careful because I don’t want to step into a Click situation but where’s that fast forward button…
Not sure it's the right niche but if anyone's interested in hard-core Medieval history and warfare I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series
Every Video 😂😂
Manor lord is the only game I think I would just pay for not caring what the price is . Iv been waiting since I first heard of it and that demo made me call in for work. When it gets released I’m leaving work the moment it hits 4pm. Just take my money and gimme please. To be honest I’m not expecting this game in 2023 but that’s okay I can wait a bit longer
Can see this being the Baldaurs Gate of strategy games
This game looks goooooooood…. Will be buying for sure. Reminds me of a stronghold/medieval tw2 crossover
Looks greatly promising
So hyped
As much as I can't wait for this game, if it was coming out this year then the dev would've probably announced it by now. He probably just forgot to update the steam page.
I'm betting Q1 2024 because he'll want to polish it up as best he can
We will know in the next couple of days
When AOE 4 was announced this was what I had in mind and I'm thankful it's happening, Hopefully it will be successful and in the future will cover all ages like Empire Earth
I hope this game gets different cultures and biomes down the line. That would be incredible.
I like where they're going with this.
I hope they'll expand in other historic periods and improve battles so they rival total war games.
Why would they *want* to rival Total War when grand strategy isn't even the genre? This is a city builder first and foremost, always has been and always will be.
With CA, dropping the ball on the historical front. Manor lords devs are going to cash it in like the battle bit guys did, with the battle field franchise failures. I’ll take small quality battles over huge blob battles any day. The small amounts of detail are what makes games great.
Great video, you are supposed to pronounce it medy-evil though haha, made me giggle every time you say medeval :D
It looks like best parts of Black&White, Europa Universalis and Total War series are mixed in such a way it'll be enjoyable without grinding or tedious design.
Can you add a note or overlay that this has been delayed to april 2024[
Release date set for April 26th, 2024. Slavic Magic said he really hates letting people down by delaying the game further, but feels that it would be a greater let down to release the game on time but without the extra polish and tweaks to be applied in the interim. I, for one, am more than willing to wait a few more months for a better product.
Interesting alternative to Anno 1800, more natural and even bloodthirsty but if they improve UI and technology evolving, it will hit the 10!
OMFG this project looks sick as fuck!!!!!!!!!! I hope that this game will be multiplayer as well.... I think it has the best mechanism to Roleplay with the other leaders!!!!
Looks good
I mean just listen to the soundtrack! Good grief it's beautiful.
I've been following Manor Lords for about 2 years, will absolutely pick this up when it releases if I have the funds.
It's very similar to how looking at Starfield makes me want to try No Man's Sky instead, to get the kind of space exploration experience I actually want. Let's hope Manor Lords doesn't have a No Man's Sky-kind of launch though. O__o
When you will be able to manage the taxes (tax more or less the use of common oven or agricultural tools, tax the bridges for merchants and travelers and be able to have a tax policy that could attract merchants to have a big market in your town..... and have the population react to it, not being able to pay or other) and have food and wealth according to the season (in winter you can't have cereals all that) then you will have the ultimate medieval management game
The graphics looks great and give me Kingdom Come Deliverance vibe. I never played city building games but I am looking forward to this one.
