  • My recent tool purchase from China included some carbide boring bars. I give you a rundown on how they look and feel - including the carbide inserts.

    The main difference between paying $20-$100 for a Chinese boring bar and $100-$500 for a Sandvik is quality control. Same with the inserts. The high end companies throw out tooling (scrap rate) that doesn't meet their standards where the Chinese companies would let the same ones through. The tolerance on things like shank size, shank taper, hole position in the insert seat, surface finish, nicks and dings, and all that tends to vary a lot more on the Chinese stuff where the big names will generally repeat more. And when you touch off an insert in a Sandvik holder on a q-setter in a CNC machine it's usually within tenths or less than 10 microns of the last one. Where the cheap ones will be within a couple thousandths or about 50 microns. Both work well and we use more Chinese stuff then the big name stuff.

    Just ordered a solid carbide 8mm bar today, thanks for the vid. Lets face it most home hobby machinist will use this size bar more than any other, I have larger bars up to 3/4" but non of them are carbide. If I like this one, when I get it, then I will order the 16mm one as well and skip the 12mm size.

      Follow up on this, I ordered one of these bars from Ebay and they sent me one starting with an H rather than a C, H stands for HSS and I ended up having to get some money back and ordered another one this time through Amazon and it came in so just a warning to anyone buying one they may try to down grade you on what they send if it's not a reputable seller. The Carbide like you say is heavier than the HSS, the HSS works decent but the carbide works better.

      How are you finding the boring bar now that you have had some time to test it?

      @@kickinthegob I've been very happy with how it performs and I was actually surprised at how well the HSS bar performed as well in the end. Yes the carbide out does the hss most of the time but there are a few times the hss is actually better (very rarely), the carbide when taking a finishing pass would hit a harmonic and even playing with the feed and speed wouldn't give the finish I was looking for and I was able to use the hss bar and get the finish I wanted.
      One thing I will point out to others if they haven't had a chance to learn this yet there is a big difference between the cheaper low carbon boring bars out there and a hss boring bar, yes they work and I own a few myself but I would recommend trying a HSS boring bar or a Carbide boring bar and see what a difference it can make.

    It's funny to hear all the "home machinists" that tell u inly to buy high end stuff because it affects manufacturers. In a home machinists u rarely need the tolerance control of a business shop. And secondly a business shop is in the "business" if making hundreds or thousands of the same part. It's the product they make to earn money not a home project for fun. I was a Senior Master ASE for years and spent rediculous money on Snap On, Matco and Mac tools so the would support me by replacing broken items every week so I could do a production job at a production repair facility. At home I assure u I don't spend that much on my tools as it's totally rediculous. There are different markets for different products including machine tools. If Sandvick wants to sell to me than make tools that are high enough quality for me yet not stupid expensive required for production.

    Why do they use solid carbide for the tool and then add a carbide tip?

      Carbide can't flex so it won't vibrate and chatter on deep bores like steel ones do

    • @Kurth_Engineering
      @Kurth_Engineering 2 роки тому

      @@justifiedrampage it can flex but it flexes way less than normal steel
