Once a gain, Baron, you've come through for me with a question I can't find an answer to anywhere else. I still have my Sony AX100 (no annual upgrade for me right now as a student) and I want to learn all I can about it. I am make mini documentaries, news programs for school projects and faux commercials. I STILL don't know everything about this camera after having it for 3 years now. But I love it still. I'm so glad I can come to your channel and learn more about this video recorder. Thank you very much. I have a question however, when I am attaching that external microphone (unfortunately not a RODE) do I need to alter the audio levels so as not to have so much hiss? Please advise.
Hi Libby, thanks for writing in. And it's encouraing to know you find our tutorials helpful. The AX100 is a pretty good camera even to date. Regards the external mic, increasing the audio levels in the camera might help, just as long as you don't overdo it. Ideally you the levels should be adjusted on the mic first, so your mic becomes more/less sensitive to capturing audio BEFORE setting the levels on the camera. The levels on the camera are used to boost audio that have been brought into the camera from the mic. Meaning- whatever that has been captured by the mic, can be boosted up. Reducing hissing (or background noise) starts from the mic. So, hopefully your mic can reduce the ambient noise (assuming you're doing interviews), then use the camera's audio levels to amplify the audio signals. Hope this helps, shout-out if you need clarification -Baron
Do you know if this camera supplies plugin power (3-10V) for 3.5mm lavalier microphones? Thank you! Also, do you have recommendations of how to remove background hissing with a shotgun mic on this camera? I used a Sony shotgun mic and had a lot of background hissing. Thanks for helping :)
I just got the Sony FDR-AX700 and it works fine when recording with the internal mic, however when you attach an external mic (I tried with a Rode and a Sony ECM-CG60) there is a pretty noticable hum/buzz in the background. At first I was using this with an AC adapter, then I changed to a battery and it fixed it, however when I tested it again (with the battery), the hum is still there. Anyone know how I can fix this?
Hello Baron,Great videos - thank you. I've just purchased the Sony AX100 and it is a brilliant camera. Can it put this onto a Ronin or Ronin M stabiliser please?Thank you.Paul
Hi there Paul, thank you so much for your kind review and congrats on your new purchase! Yes you can attach it on a Ronin or Ronin M stabilizer with no issues. You might want to use the medium sized battery to reduce the weight
Hello, it's me again. I was hoping you could tell me how to hook up my Zoom H5 to my Sony AX100 and then add on the wireless mic. I don't which wire to connect to the camera from the Zoom and which outlet from the Zoom to the wireless mic. Please advise or let me know where we can communicate further. Thank you so very much.
Hi AdLibbyTV, nice to hear from you. The H5 is a serious bit of kit. Normally we don't hook up an audio recorder like the H5 to the camera. The audio is recorded separately and synced during the editing process. If you still want to do that, connect the H5 to the Mic in port of the AX100; it's in the front, right side of the camera as shown in the video above at 1min 08 secs. In this case, the wireless mic is connected to the H5 and not directly to the camera. Hope this helps!
Hello Baron I am following your excellent videos.I have bought the AX100 camcorder and would like to fit a zoom shotgun microphone for picking up distant sounds. Can you recommend one that is compatible with the hot shoe on this camera. Is the Rode mic you are using suitable ? What is the model type does it use power from the camera or does it have battery power. Thank you
Hi Alan, thank you for your kind support! I think most convenient shotgun mic to get is this little fella from Sony which doesn't require any adapters www.sony.net/Products/diacc/mic/03_products/3-2.html However, if you require something more specialised, you will need an adapter to mount most shotgun mics onto the Multi Interface shot (MI) of your AX100. Let me know which you prefer?
Thanks Baron for you prompt reply. I have just bought the SONY ECM-GZ1M recently. However I have tried it on my AX100 and it is rejected by the menu as not compatible. Also on the microphone menu blt in mic zoom I switch off to on ZOOM MICROPHONE FUNCTION IS ENABLED When I switch the microphone from off to zoom or gun this function is switched off. I have contacted Sony for advice. I may have a faulty shoe connection. Have you tested ECM-GZ1M at all. I am very pleased with my AX100 keep your videos coming well done.
Hi Alan, thanks so much for the encouragement! Hope you get the faulty mic settled soon. I am currently using the Rode Video Mic Pro. Hope you get awesome videos with your AX100
no interviews just walking around, events, sports, concerts, i prolly wont use sound much since i do slow motion video, but once in a while i might. i wonder if 4 channel mic is compatible? or just stick with the XYS 2 channel stereo for now?
ya i might get the zoom GZ1m mic later on for sports, but ive heard people say it wasnt too impressive compared to the stereo one. ill try the stereo with mics pointed at 0 degrees to start out
Thanks for the video. Is there a way to control the volume of the headphones? Not the microphone gain/levels but just how loud the headphones are. I haven't been able to figure it out but I've only used the camera a few times.
Hi Aaron sorry for the late reply. Thanks for your kind review of our video. Yes! You can control the headphone audio levels. Just select a clip for playback. On the playback screen, there will be a 'speaker' icon just above the 'trash' icon and below the 'X' icon. Click on the speaker icon and adjust the headphone's volumes. Hope this helps!
Thanks so much! So you have to go into playback to adjust volume. I guess you can't change headphone volume while you're recording then? Shooting with an AX100 soon and will check it out...
Hi Baron, pardon me but I need your expertise once again. Even though I'm recording with my Sony AX100 I've changed the sequence to 1920 X 1080 because I have other videos that were recorded on Canon T5is and I want them all to match. But I've got a problem. The video that was recorded on the AX100 is moving in slow motion while the other footage is normal. Next in another video I've just done for a product review the editing mode says ARRI Cinema. I don't want that...do I? Please advise if you have the time. Thank you so very much. I value your opinion and want to make sure I have the best settings for my videos.
Do you remember what frame rate you recorded in using AX100? Ensure your sequence is 1920 x 1080 at 25p (frames per second), The 'p' stands for Progressive and not Upper or Lower field in case you're asked. Just confirm that your AX100 footage was shot at 25p
What do I change the ARRI Cinema to? AVCHD p? My apologies, I messed it all up and now I'm trying to fix it. I'm producing my first show and just learning Premiere Pro CC (6 months in)
one important thing to note, the audio/line in on the camera does not work without the hotshoe activated...which is rather dumb in my opinion as you cant have a wireless lavalier running in etc. Only if the mic is plugged to the hotshoes as well will the camera activate the external mic input...
I disagree. That's not true. The camera will record audio with a mic/lavalier plugged into its microphone port. There's no need to even touch the hotshoe for this to work. I've done this many times. I record audio directly into the AX100 without going through the hotshoe and there's no need to post sync the audio. Please get your facts right before spreading inaccurate info
what do u get when u open up final cut/premiere pro? I tried twice today with a sennheiser mic plugged into a Zoom U 24 which then goes into the mic in of the AX100. First off the headphones does not isolate the audio from the mic in so you hear the built in mic and the line in mic as well coming from both sides. I tried to activate the mic in but it says unavailable each time a mic input is plugged in. I hoped when i exported the video to premiere it would at least have the mic in and built in audio on spearate tracks but it didnt just both tracks from the built in. to be fair, their menu is terrible and i have seen a number of ppl asking about this online so i dont think i am the only one having this issue. anyway good video mate for what u have highlighted i am just relating my experience without going in the hot shoe. I had to resort to recording the audio to pc via usb on my zoom u 24.
Once I've connected an external mic to the AX100 mic port, I'll get a track of audio that's separate from the built-in mic. In short, I'll just get the audio track from the external mic. So it's either you get the audio from the external mic (when done correctly) OR from the built-in mic. You don't get 2 different tracks. I have never used the hotshoe for audio recording... ever. The only reason I connect anything to the hotshoe is just to hold a mic or an LED. So... let's try to work out your issue. Can you try to connect your lapel mic directly (without the audio recorder) to the mic port of your AX100? See how that turns out. Also, try deactivating the Built-in Zoom mic of the AX100. Trust me, I've worked on so many videos and tv shows using an external mic connected to the AX100 without any issues.
thanks for that...i am not sure why mine does not work...i will play around abit more and comment back my findings....i cant go direct into the cam without audio recorder as the transmitter is xlr, so i go into the audio recorder and convert into 3.5mm stereo from there. i will let u know what i find with further experimentation cheers
You mean you CAN'T go direct into the cam? And you mean the RECEIVER is XLR? I'm sure Sennheiser lavs have an XLR to 3.5mm jack that came in the package. Can you locate that cable and to connect direct? As I get a feeling the audio recorder's output (3.5mm) may not have a strong enough signal for the AX100
Wolfang Digital, What type of adapter do you use between the camera and Rode microphone? Is it ADP-AMA?
Great video man keep it up, I just bought this camera with a 256GB card and works well and holds 9 hours
+Chris Chris thanks for watching and congrats on your new purchase, 9 hours is a whole lotta footage! Have fun!

Hi Baron, I have a AX-53 and unaware how to set up the external mic I got. In the menu is there a place to go to set it up? Thanks Baron!

Hi what mic do you use? I bought a Rode shotgun but the shoe does not fit. Thanks.
Hi Shaun, I was also using a Rode mic. Look for a Sony multi interface cold shoe adapter

no interviews just walking around, events, sports, concerts, i prolly wont use sound much since i do slow motion video, but once in a while i might. i wonder if 4 channel mic is compatible? or just stick with the XYS 2 channel stereo for now?
The XY style of mic is great for capturing a wide area but the zoom mic is meant for longer range and a more narrow capture space
