- Happy Birthday to Daryl Hall who was born on this date in 1946.
"Private Eyes" is the title track off of the Hall and Oates album which came out in 1981 and featured John Siegler on bass. I was mistaken about T-Bone Wolk playing bass on this song. Sorry about that.
I'm playing the Double-Bit bass that was built for me by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars - www.mbjguitars...
Ahh yes the legendary Tom “T-Bone” Wolk. Pleasant surprise I saw Billy Joel in 1994 and he was an addition to the band. He made every bass line interesting
He didn't play on this album. He joined after they finished recording, yes he's in the video.
@@Lance37a correct. I meant to say addition as a touring member to his band
Yeah, T-Bone was the man!
I believe John Siegler (Utopia, Todd Rundgren) played bass on this album.
You are right about that!
Really, I assumed T bone woke played on this album
Playing bass for Hall and Oates back in the day would be a dream gig. So many great songs to choose from. Thanks Troy.
It would have to be in a tribute band at this point in time. Daryl's voice is gone. You're right about the great tunes though.
@TJH3113 I edited my reply to indicate playing bass for H & O back in their heyday would have been awesome. Same goes for artists and bands such as Elton John, ABBA, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson and Michael Buble.
Wow I never noticed what a cool bass line that is! You always have a way of bringing it to life and making it sound better lol😄👍✨
Thanks, Nicci!
@@TJH3113 Happy Halloween 💀🎃👻🕷🕸🦇
One of the best duo bands in history, nicely executed, Troy.
Couldn't agree more! Thank you.
@@TJH3113Nobody tops Simon & Garfunkel for sure
Your covers give me a new appreciation for classic tunes like this, some of which I'd forgotten about, overlooked or didn't pay enough attention to the bass line, which are often super interesting yet approachable. Amazing performance and tone as usual. Thanks for the inspiration!
That's great to hear. Your comment really describes the way I feel about these songs since I took the blinders off and actually listened to what was going on in many of these "Pop" tunes. Thanks so much, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave such a great comment. Take care!
Always a joy watching your covers! Brilliant job as always!
That's great to hear! Thanks so much.
Absolute legend skill! My friend's gonna love this.
Aw, you're too kind... thanks!
Keep on rocking Troy 🎸
I'm trying!
Come April of 2025, I will be celebrating my 50th year as a RUSH Disciple! They have been My #1. Now, there have been a TON of artists and Bands that filled in my Musical Menu! Back in the 90's during a PBS Pledge Drive, Hall & Oates were one of those shows that was replayed quite a few times over a two week span, and I did not miss one! Got my chops busted quite a few times from my pals for liking them so much but you brought up a great point Troy about How Popular Hall & Oates were back in the day and honestly these two really put out some awesome tunes! It is sad to see them go through their trails and tribulations recently, I very much enjoy listening to you describe how you go about playing these covers and the ups and downs that you experience with certain cord progressions. I have a feeling that many of the bass players you are emulating would actually dig your version and think to themselves, "Chit, I should have played it like that!" On a side note, right @ 10:13, I swear I heard the first notes of "Hey Nineteen" From The Dan of Steel!?! 🙃 MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
Congratulations!
That bass sounds awesome on this track!
Just dumb luck.
@@TJH3113 no way!
@@Tracer9GTRider8 What I meant was that I don't tailor my tone from song to song. Once I set whatever pedal I'm using to get my EQ, I don't touch it... except for my volume. My bass just happens to sit better in some mixes than others.
@@TJH3113 ha ok I'll allow it then 😆 Seriously though, that bass sounds awesome!
Another great, underrated bass line. Excellent choice!
Couldn't agree more! I'm glad you liked it.
@@TJH3113 You're welcome my friend. We're still looking forward to your cover of 'I Keep Forgettin'' by Michael McDonald. :)

Oh i so remember this one coming on the radio back in the day,. Love it !
Me too!
I have been working on this one too! What a fun one to play. Love the run up at 1:23
Very cool! It is a cool lick, isn't it?
Love it, great bass line
Awesome! It is a great bass-line, isn't it?
I learn so much watching you. Thank you!!
Very nice of you to say... Thank you!
awesome job as always man...and that bass looks and sounds great
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Take care!
You brighten up all of UA-cam with these covers. Loving this one.
That was very nice of you to say... Thank you~
I've heard this song a lot, never heard the bassline like this before. That bass you have there is beautiful! Great playing Troy!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave such a nice comment!
There aren't too many bass lines that so blatantly want to break the bass-as--backing-instrument chains and soar all over the neck -and with so much time and instrumental space to seemingly do so. Nice. Thanks for the devotion, Troy.
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave such a cool comment.
Bravo🎉. Sounds great....as usual.
Many thanks Sam!!
The first Hall & Oates album T-bone played on was H2O. Great job on the song. The drums sound like it's a drums loop because it never changes.
I just jumped to the conclusion that it was T-Bone because he was in the video. Thanks for the clarification and the kind words.
Good job once again 👍 I remember that I bought this LP many years after it was released checking some albums at a record shop.
Thank you very much.
Another great one! Thanks Troy
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice bassline supporting greatly the voice. Well done Troy.
I'm glad you liked it. Thank you.
Love me some H&O! Yet another fantastic cover!
Me too! Thank you Rob.
Joyful song and bass line. Well played!
I'm very glad you liked it. Thank you!
Great cover man. Love the look and sound of these MBJ basses.
Thanks a lot! Joe's very talented and a great guy.
Bravo 👏🏻 excellent as always 🤩
Thank you very much!
Nice bassline,I didn't know this song yet, great job Troy.
I'm glad you liked it. Thank you Mario.
Wikipedia, of course, could be incorrect. With that said, it has John Siegler listed as bass for the entire Private Eyes album.
I just jumped to the conclusion that it was T-Bone because he was in the video.
Great bass cover, Troy. I love John & Oates and this song 💯
Thank you ver much!
So great! Your playing is so clean and perfect!
Thanks so much!
Wolk came in by the time they made the video for this song.
Yeah, I noticed that!
loved this. and that bass has an almost alembic quality. Love the tone!
I'm happy to hear that. I was shooting for Spector, but I'll take Alembic.
Great job as always. How about “Every 1’s A Winner” by Hot Chocolate? That tone of yours will do it more than justice.
Thanks! I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion!
Great job! My bud was friends with Mickey Curry- got to jam with him, so much fun
Legendary drummer! The Bryan Adams band it's not the same without Mickey.
Thanks! Very cool!
Nice.
That bass sounds fantastic.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.
Hi. It's a very beautiful melody very well played, as always. Thank you for your generosity in sharing! A hug from Marcio from Brazil. For you and everyone who watched this beautiful video!
Thank you very much!
My favorite track on an all-time great album. The bass line is stealthy. Sounds simple to someone who doesn’t know anything about bass, but it’s challenging and complex.
Awesome! I hope you liked it.
Again one of my favourite songs of all time! Could you do "Call Me" by Go West? A great bass line by Pino Palladino
Awesome! I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion.
Pure pro skill
Aw shucks... thanks
Monster eyess, they're watching you lol. Great cover! long time fan!
😂🤣😂 Thanks so much!
John Siegler, huh? I loved his playing on the debut Utopia album, Todd’s first foray into prog rock.
Siegler’s jazz bass sound was decidedly non-prog, (flatwounds!?) more old school RnB really. ( and it sounded fantastic).
Yeah, I assumed it was T-Bone since he's in the video. Seigler played with quite a few acts, it seems.
Every note is perfectly placed…. They just don’t write them like this anymore
I hear you... no, they don't!
@@TJH3113haha! Thanks
I like hearing you talk about the bands too
i would say "underrated" but it's a big single of theirs... let's say "overshadowed" by their other capital H Huge tracks.. great rendition, fun line.
They had a ton of good stuff. Thank you.
Original Bass player was TBone - amazing musician
It was actually John Siegler, according to Wikipedia. T-Bone was in the video though.
Great bass line .
I think so too .
That bass sounds great
I'm glad you liked it!
Such skill
Aw shucks
Definitely check out Hall and Oates - Liberty concert in 1985. What a band!
It's on UA-cam.
Thanks... I will!
The isolated bass is the studio version. You're playing the "performance" bass line which vibes with drums.
And sounds better to my ear. HB Daryl. RIP T-bone.
Me too! Thank you Rob.
Great job. So sad Daryl and John.
are being torn apart by what most bands get torn aprt by.
Money and music rights.
Thank you.
Great as always. Please consider doing a modern classic: Fly As Me by Silk Sonic.
Thank you. I'll check it out!
Great job!
Thanks!
Love that bass sound, what brand of bass is this? Excellent performance and tone. Thanks for inviting us to your private space.
Thank you. It was made by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars. His like should be in the text beneath the video.
@@TJH3113 Bad habits and lack of attention for not reading your video notes. Thanks! Being a fan of you for 10+ years, stay healthy.
@@manfredoliveras3196 No worries... ever.
Antoher fine job
Thank you kindly
Great work! I'm a guitar player who loves bass too.
Thank you very much!
Terrific bass line.
I think so too!
T-bone, another one of the underrated bass players.
Big Truth!
Thanks for sharing Troy. Please cover their hit Making My Dreams.
It was my pleasure. ua-cam.com/video/ircd7n4uVLs/v-deo.htmlsi=u98_YAIeA_ABe31x
Killer Troy
Thank you Joe
It's too bad Daryl hates John. They should still be touring.
Yeah, it’s a shame. The more I hear about Daryl Hall….
T-Bones first album was H2O
Thanks... I think I jumped to the conclusion that it was T-Bone because he was in the video.
Do you have a favourite song of theirs? Or one you think is the best?
My friend and I say Rich Girl is the best however Man Eater is probably my favourite.
Family Man.
You can't go wrong with "Rich Girl", but I'm also partial to "Out of Touch". Daryl Hall's solo song, "Dreamtime" gets honorable mention.
@@TJH3113 Very nice, Out of Touch is especially a classic.
I haven't heard Hall's solo work sounds interesting I'll make sure to give Dreamtime a listen thanks 🤙
Nice tone on that bass Troy - EMGs?
Thanks. Yes, EMG Alnico Jazz in SoapBars.
Great playing, as usual… that bass is gorgeous btw, what is it?
Edit: I spot a Dano Longhorn in the background.. always wanted one!
Thanks a lot. The bass was made by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars.
Love the Longhorn!
I love the tones and sound of that bass. What is the name of the bass mfg.
once again a great job on learning the song.
Cool. It was made by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars. Thank you very much.
I would've assumed T-Bone played on this one because of the video, and as a child of the 80s, the videos were gospel (although this one always tilted me because the drums are exactly out of sync in the beginning)
I think that's what made me jump to that conclusion.
Troy… what’s up with all these lame pop songs? Go back to being the rocker you are?
Gotta wait your turn.
