Thanks for a great shout-out to the M-P 240. One additional feature of this camera, which I discovered recently, is its ability to apply a Contrast Filter (a yellow, orange, red, green or blue colour filter) and a Tone (Neutral, Vintage or Blue) to the Black-and-White Film Mode, i.e.,straight-out-of-the-camera JPEGs. You don’t get this feature on the later digital M’s. In my opinion, this rivals the image quality of the Monochrom Leica cameras, without the need for lens filters.
Thanks for this review. My M-P is on the way. I sold my M8 and M9 to get it. Cheers.
Update 8 Oct 2022: This July marked my 50th year as a working photographer. After I received my M-P 240 I sold my M8 and M9 which more than paid for the 240. The size works well for me as I have gorilla hands. The shutter doesn't sound like somebody trying to kick start an old motorcycle. Battery life is incredible. I later acquired the EVF and being able to use some of my legacy lenses as well as my R lenses like my 35-50 Vario Elmarit is a joy. The camera had less than 300 shutter actuations when I received it. The film look of this camera is breathtaking and the shortcomings (few) of the sensor are easily corrected in post. Keep in mind I spent decades shooting with Kodachrome 25 so seeing the results at iso 800 I feel like I'm getting away something. Black and white at iso 800 is a magic spot for low light. I love this camara and everytime I pick it up I get a case of perma grin.
Great video. This was my first leica and I absolutely loved it. Upgraded to a M10 for the dynamic range and low light performance but couldn't quite get back the rendering of the 35FLE paired with the M240P. It's a look I couldn't get out of the SL or M10. So after four years of missing this baby I have just decided to buy it back. Managed to get a used M240P Safari at a reasonable price and had been loving every minute with it since!
How’s the safari..
Right decision. There is just something about this 240. I sold mine for a M10P. Getting the 240 again next week.
It's my dream to click a picture by leica rangefinder camera . Love your review
pawan kumar Cheers mate! Yes, shooting a rangefinder is definitely an experience, almost like driving a classic car, it may not have all the bells and whistles of a Tesla but that rawness is charming :)
The MP240 is my second Leica, my first being the M8.
I’ve shot the MP240 daily since it was released and love it.
The only thing I’d wish for is the better optical rangefinder on the M10.
But I don’t buy into all the upgraditis surrounding camera gear.
Shoot the tool you have as often as possible and enjoy capturing moments in time.
Great long term review.
Yesterday, I went into my local camera store just to check things out. The next thing I knew is I've already bought a used MP240 safari edition with Summicron 35 f2. It was a pretty good deal that I have to grab it. Rangefinder is always my favorite form factor ever since my dad gave me his Canon QL17. I don't shoot much film any more, so I was waiting for other camera company to make and affordable digital FF rangefinder, but forget it, I'd just bough my dream camera.
I have one that I actually don't use, always felt it's little heavy and thick, now I am tempted to go back and give it another try 😁
Love your channel and the music you use ! And love the Bellingham nutters episode !
❤
非常棒的视频.My first Leica m camera was m240. After using it for a few years, I upgraded to m10, but I gradually found that the rendering of m10 was not satisfactory to me, so I chose m240P black again. I knew I could never lose it.
Love your videos..
I upgraded to the M10 - from the M240 - over a year ago. I, too, liked the idea of the bronze vs magnesium body of the M10, but my reason for going to the M10 was the increased image processing speed of the M10, the advanced electronics of the M10. I think the M10 is simply faster to respond to a shutter click. I DID notice the effects of the smaller battery of the M10 right away.
I feel like the 240 is still the best choice for people who shoot street/travel in daylight only. It can't even remotely keep up for indoors/night. But image quality is essentially identical during daytime street shooting with the m10- and the battery life is a more desirable upgrade with image parity present.
This is true. I honestly don’t see much difference between the m240 and an m10 in image quality. I only see a difference in colors and I have to say the m240 looks much more appealing to me. A certain look to it that isn’t replicated by the m10.
The M240 is still my daily driver. Never felt the need to upgrade to M10 as I never shoot beyond ISO 3200.
DarkRami Likewise mate. Unless you need to see in dark or be a paparazzi photographer, rather than an artist in photography, you won’t need to shoot ultra high ISO :)
Still have it?
@@splootan I switched to an M262
@@FotosyMas. I have an option of getting a Black MP Type 240 new ! Or a used near mint Leica M240 safari set!?
@@splootan I would go for the MP depending on price
Enjoyable, informative presentation. Thanks! Notably, the M Type 246 Monochrom also has the sapphire glass LCD, and then adds high ISO performance that rivals that of the M10. The Type 246 could be seen as another “best” Leica M camera, for those who do not need to shoot color.
Be safe and well!
I am using a Sony A7IV but I use an old Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.4 MD manual lens, more than my Sony digital lenses... It's my dream to have a Leica camera for my Portraits works and be that 1 camera 1 lens photographer. Some people might not understand but the feeling & experience using a manual lens that produces imperfect images is just different...
Nice video and pictures. What lens did you use? Thanks
great video, thanks for this one.
I have a doubt. i've heard that the M-P 240 has the processor of the M10 which make it work faster than the M. is it right?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this camera... I have long been harbouring an irrational lust for the original ccd leica m monochrom... anyway... in a previous video you mentioned that you used some medium format gear in your professional life... I would love to hear your thoughts on the characteristics of a larger sensor... keep up the good work...
noah wood Thanks Noah for watching. Well, CCD M has a very different tones and rendition due to its design and also the input (and build) by Kodak! I do use medium format gears and they are all different too. I wouldn’t say which is better because you can never compare formats because they are different and aim for different purposes. Hence I never say anything bad about any format, including my current workhorse Olympus M43 cameras. Larger format does give you a more natural compression if you shoot portrait and definitely more resolution, especially so on films. BTW, I love the CCD Monochrom!
@@Red35Photography Thanks for detailed reply... I agree with what you say about how all formats have there place... I am a bit of a camera hoarder and ended up with three systems... m43... full frame... and medium format... and have found that full frame is the least exciting for me... all I need is the time to actually use them... have a good week...
Absolutely love your videos! This one has really made me think between the 240 and the new Q MP varient!... Also as a side note, I was wondering if you could share the name of the audio track with the ambient best and the piano piece. It was also incredible! Always listen to your videos with headphones for the superb audio experience!!!👍
Cheers mate!!! Glad to hear that you enjoy our videos, in particular in the audio department :) Q is a very different camera, so it depends on your needs. The audio track? I will ask Tracey and get back to you.
I certainly agree on the point that typ 240 is most advanced body with the video and battery, but I wonder how the shutter sound compares to the m10. It seems quiter which is a big deal in a leica body.
Hey man, great review! What's your favorite lens with the 240?
ahmad vlogs I shoot mine with the Mandler era 50 Lux and 35 lux (the version IV “Bokeh King”) the 75/1.4 rounds out my lens kit for the MP240
Do you have any issues using the rangefinder focusing? Mine has never really worked well and I use the evf attachment.
Leica 28mmf/2.8 ASPH or Leica 50mm f/1.4. Both good lenses?
AGREED
Planning to get an M240 soon. BTW, nice hat! do you mind sharing where do you get yours?
great video! you say that you shoot your professional assignments with it, may I ask you what kind of photographs you shoot for your work ?
Cheers mate. I shot weddings, engagement, proposal using the M for two years. I also did some documentary and travel stuff with it too :)
wow! that's great. it's interesting to know because very few professional photographers use the M for their work. They tend to use the SL for that. well done and keep up the good work!
Cheers mate! Yeah, I think I am a hand full of photographers in the UK actually uses M for work! @@Traveljournalist
Love mine too
I'm curious on your thoughts on the Leica M Monochrome. Have you shot with it or reviewed that camera?
Thanks for watching mate. I love the Monochrome, whether it's the first one or 246. They are just beautiful. I particularly like the tonality it produces and that ultra high sensitivity for hyper focusing on the street is just too good.
Many thanks for your passionate review, based on extensive experience with the M240. Between the M-P (Typ 240) and the CL, which do you prefer?
Thanks for watching. Well, M and CL are two very different cameras. One is manual and one is auto. If I am to use Leica, I go all the way to use it the old fashion manual way. So the M for me.
Many thanks again. I tend to agree with you about sticking with manual. Congratulations on becoming an Olympus ambassador. I hope we can still count on your insights into the Leica universe!
@@richardpcovington Thanks Rich. Well, I still use my M for certain projects and I still use my M6 film camera a lot so I am not leaving anytime soon :)
Red35 Photography Glad to hear that; your many fans will be grateful. By the way, I love your photos on various London walk-arounds and your enthusiasm in general. Good work!
@@richardpcovington thanks mate! Much appreciated your support!
I would have loved to see more pictures taken with the camera versus video of you taking pictures with the camera and not seeing the outcome.
me too
Top brass would agree! 😗
LOL you put the red dot back on the M-P... :D I tried every ways to hide it's flashy part and so
haha that's what we all paid for right? Joking, I had a black cover before then I lost it, so I got a bright colour one so I won't lose it again.
This review made me want m240 instead of m10 lol
Finally i got it.
I really enjoy to shoot with leica RF
Only a specific Olympus EVF works on the M Typ 240 (VF-2, I think, not the latest version). And while you are technically right, I would prefer the M10 (and its siblings) for its slimmer body (and for video I would ressort to my iPhone ;)). But, who knows, I might end up with an M Typ 240 in the end due to budget constraints ... ;)
Christian Augustin hahaha I like both for different things. VF-2 is the one that’s compatible with M240. VF1 and VF3 use different ports! Either cameras is fine actually.
@@Red35Photography Ah, thanks for the clarification. It was the VF-2 then (and I had the VF-1 for my E-PM1 and the VF-3 for my E-PM2 model).
Wow that older one sure does great work but this k the person behind the lens is responsible for that. Been watching your posts for a while now and just can't put my finger on what it is but they all seem to jump out at you and the colors although bright seem to be soothing anyway great work again stay safe see ya
Bene C Wow thank you my friend. Cameras are tools and that’s true. Who doesn’t want the latest and the best but as a Photographer, you don’t need that. I do replace my cameras simply because they will die eventually and my mileage is high and I tend to replace them every two years to improve reliability. Shame that this is really what’s happening in the digital photography world, unlike the good old mechanical cameras where you can properly service the camera and it will last for life.... shame.
@@Red35Photography I bought a Canon EX auto with exchangeable front lens a few months ago as it was my first 35 mm camera 1972 and I still recon it was te best to play with ha ha stay safe
I wonder if Leica will make another M with video, or if this will stay with their others like the SL, Q, CL etc.
This uncertainty is tempting me to get a M240, as I shoot a lot of video as well as stills, and I'd like to have a M with video capabilities. As it is, I switch to another camera when I want video, which can be fiddly.
As far as I know, M will not get any video anymore. That's going to SL and other mirrorless bodies. Sadly. I do think it's pretty cool.
@@Red35Photography Man, that sucks. Too bad the vocal diehards told Leica they didn't want video in the M series. Now I feel guilty for not saying anything positive about it. 🌧
Were they always got that thin long lens? Looks a little awkward.
Crazy Horsea LOL, well, Leica lenses are always very tiny, by comparison. It’s not long actually, it’s the hood, wait until you see the 135mm :) It’s even more weird looking
It seems like your video was not shot outside the London Leica Store
Oh ~ your were around the Bank
Which bottom plate do you use - which can be seen at 6:49 and 11:47? Is original Leica M240?
The original M-P bottom plate, which is the same s M240
Red35 Photography thank you very much - I did not know there was a tripod connection in this bottom plate
10 years later, you will say M10 is the best.
am I crazy thinking of trading my Nikon D850, the best DSLR on planet, for Leica 240MP?
No not at all, it's a different camera altogether so if you enjoy the pure rangefinder experience, nothing can compare nor replace.
I was thinking about doing the same thing, trading up my D750, plus nikkorm24-70 and D850 w tamron 24-70mm, for the Leica MP-240 or M10-P ...carrying these heavy cameras are for the young kids...
What is the meaning of the acronym I.S.O.?
Lee Townsley “International Standard Organisation”, an international standard that currently used to represent sensor sensitivity levels and analogue film speed. In the old days, there are other standards such as ASA, DIN, GE..... and they all faded and disappeared and now only ISO is represented and used.
How to Pronounce ISO
Film speed was rated by using the ASA number, American Standards Association (now named ANSI).
Film speed use to be referred to by the acronym A.S.A.; It is now referred to by the ISO rating.
ISO is pronounced (eye-so) not I.S.O, it is not an acronym.
ISO is the name of a company.
Is this mispronunciation now a permanent mistake that will never be corrected?
“Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal.” ISO is pronounced “eye-so” not I.S.O. it is not an acronym.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations.
Founded on 23 February 1947, the organization promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and as of March 2017 works in 162 countries.
It was one of the first organizations granted general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
Lee Townsley just let it go. If you say it fast enough I.S.O. is indifferent to iso. Apparently it’s also not his first language. Get over with it and you will have one less thing to worry about.
DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung ... the very popular Agfa Color CT18 was a DIN 18 or ASA 50 reverse film.
I use my M240 as my daily shooter, but plan to buy a Q as back up or instead of buying a 28/1.4 lens. Would be a nice combo to the M and a 50 mm.
@@MrLee5050 big deal really? better go out and shoot
Nocticron? 😎👍
oepfelbuetschgi OMG!!! Finally someone noticed it hahahha, I was waiting to see if anyone picked up on it
The only thing I don't like about the M240 is the extra body thickness compared to the M10 and the film bodies. Other than that, it's a superb machine.
I do love the M10, feels more a film M but as said, some modern M lenses got fatter too so to me, if you use a bigger summilux like the 24mm or Noctilux, the M240 actually fits and feels better! M10 works best, balance wise, summicron!
@@Red35Photography I love the M10 too but there is no sense in "upgrading" from the M240, not for me anyway.
The body thickness doesn't bother me. 5mm is a minor point in the big scheme of things.
@@jackthehatphoto I'm actually more convinced now to keep my mp 240 which I was rushing to sell to upgrade to m10
👏🙌🙏
Too thicc.
Wish they didn’t ditch video completely on the m10 but the video on the m240 wasn’t great. Also wish they’d somehow drop the price by a thousand or two.
You did not mention the fact that many think that the color from the M240 is not as good as the M9 or the ne M10. Do you have a view on that? Thanks
Ad 2 No because I always think people over exaggerating colors. Yes, CCD sensors has higher contrast and slightly more saturated in general and resulting a more ‘Kodak Chrome’ looking. But between the M240 and M10, I don’t think the colors are that different. Only the dynamic range is better on the latter sensor. But either won’t disappoint people. I use both and they are fine.
Thank you
Nov 2018, still M240? seriouly?
It's an excellent camera, so why not?
Leicas are built to last so why not?
I still use the M8, 2006 model
35mmview p
M240 is the best. It sucks how Leica took away Movies and USB. It really really sucks.
Man, I’ve been hearing this “never go beyond 1600” thing for YEARS. When a camera gets dated, all of a sudden it loses its dynamic range beyond that number iso, 1600. When new, the camera was described as being usable at 6400. It doesn’t add up.
Too cheap my son 😋 (reference to an old french Renault's ads...)
It's a shame that leica took many things on the newer models. movie mode, USB, black paint.
M8/9/10 over typ240 any day
Yeah, the M240 is the best camera... if you don’t have a M10.
I thought this was an Olympus channel... jk
Hendrix G ahaha yes I am an Olympus professional but I do try to bring in some variety here, especially those cameras that I used to shoot with and like many pros, we use different gears. Olympus is my main tool for sure.
@@Red35Photography I love all the content, this was a great review.
You are damn RIGHT about that. The LEICA M240- P is the most ADVANCED M camera aver made. Period!
