Rattling Catalytic Converter
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 жов 2019
- This is a great example of a noise a catalytic converter may make if it comes apart internally. This is a somewhat common way in which a catalytic converter can fail. However, a catalytic converter dose not have to make noise to be bad. This is just one example and one symptom of a bad catalytic converter.
Note: While this is a somewhat common symptom of a catalytic converter that has come apart inside it is not common for a converter to come apart on its own. There is usually a root cause to why the converter came apart. Usually an ignition misfire is to blame. When an ignition misfire occurs the unburned fuel enters the cat converter and overwhelms it. The catalyst temperature rises above normal operating temperature and causes the catalyst to meld down. There are other things that can cause a catalytic converter to melt down also such as a leaking fuel injector, a faulty O2 sensor, a faulty MAP sensor, and the list goes on. Proper diagnosis and repair of root causes of catalytic converter failure must be address before replacing a catalytic converter or repeat failure could occur.

Special thanks to my wife for checking my spelling on this video and all my videos. You're the best Babe! - Авто та транспорт
Exactly brother finally someone who understands my pain thank you so much after years and years you are greatly appreciated keep up the good work
Thanks alot Bro. I've searched everywhere on the internet trying to find out why my car sounds like that!!!! This video helped me to find the cause!!!!
Thank you for getting to the point with a long drawn out video of talking. The sound is exactly the same sound my 2016 Toyota Camry started making yesterday.
Thanks. That’s exactly what my 94’ ZR1 is doing. Thought it might be a rod at first so quite a relief.
Man that's exactly what my 95 is doing !!!
@@alexisdiaz3776 my 89 Vette is doing this pretty sure my pre cats are bad also based on temp check
02 blazer xtreme also has a similar sound and was pretty sure it's the cat as it's loudest around the cat quite from the engine bay and also near the muffler and would be noticable there as it has a 90 out the muffler straight to the ground.
Lmfao same here dude my 1994 chevy k1500 is doing it. I thought my flex plate was coming apart
@@Michaeldutil it's sounds rough as hell at idle so I could imagine with a 350 it would sound like something more catastrophic like a flex plate getting ready to grenade.
The new ones just deteriorate over time. I have a cat I only use for smog checks but I've been doing that for about 16 years, however it only gets about 10 miles on it per year. Thus it probably has about 160 miles on it. I noticed just a couple years ago, the insulation that I holds the catalyst in place inside fell apart and stated coming out the pipe ends just from sitting in the garage. The catalyst is now free to bounce around and makes quite the racket, however, the catalyst works fine and lowers emissions the same amount as it did when it was brand new.
I was on my home the other night and i could feel my car missing. Well, that missing turned in to violent bucking and backfiring in the exhaust. This ended with me pushing my dead car off the bottom of an off ramp on to the shoulder. After a 50 mile tow to my mechanic it was diagnosed as a failed IGNITION COIL. The night that I got it back it started making this exact noise. The car is over 25 it doesn't need to be inspected anymore so today I ordered an off road X-pipe. Your video was perfect! Thank you!
Is it legal to run catless in your state? I was thinking about going with the same off-road x-pipe but it wouldn’t be too ideal for me.
Finally! Found the noise I've been hearing, thank you! I'll check it out
THANK YOU! Took my car to a “mechanic” for spark plug replacement. My car stared to shut down when parked. He told me he had over 50 years experience and he knew what he was doing. And that I was over reacting to the car shutting down. That my needed to get use to the new spark plugs. My car wouldn’t accelerate, so he drove it and put gas to the floor to make it drive and said car was driving fine. Next day I found the boxes he left in my car for the spark plugs he put in my car. … took it to Autozone and they said it wasn’t fit for my car. I bought the correct ones but within a day- the spark plugs he placed in were burnt out. And was causing so much misfire. My car is still acting worse now. And I was told my catalytic converter is now acting up. It is creating this noise now. 😭😩 ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT INSTINCT!
And don’t go to a mechanic most importantly
Not all mechanics are bad ya know. Actually this profession is no different than any other... You got bad apples in any field of work. The automotive repair field is no worse or better.
@@BarboursAutoHelp whatever you need to tell yourself. 😅 Thanks for your help. You do a good service.
I had the same problem but the mechanic I went to tried to get me to buy a new ecu
Thank you for your time and effort in making these videos. Perfect!! I searched it and BAM! Exactly what I wanted to hear and see. Problem solved. Appreciate you like crazy. I'll be back.
I had been hearing this same noise coming from my 2004 Ford Expedition and thought it was something in my engine. It turned out to be the 2nd catalytic. Replaced it and now sounds as smooth as butter! Thank you. Your video definitely steered me in the right direction. I am now subscribing to your channel!
How much was the repair? Mine is doing it now on my 2013 pathfinder with 86k miles. Worried about the price
My 2001 F250 Super Duty is making a noise almost like that - and the catalytic converter came to mind. You are my first stop to get even a hint of what's going on. Thank you for making this video!
Mine does it only when accelerating. Does yours?
@@fishingmaster99 Since I posted this, I found out that it's more likely the heat shield is loose. It rattles when running idle, but doesn't get much louder or pronounced when accelerating - just a little.
@fishingmaster99 that is when mine has the sound as well. Has your issue been fixed by replacing the cat?
So i get a rattle when cruising or accelerating. This is the closest thing i found to be the sound so far. Any ideas? Thanks
@fishingmaster99 same with mine, i have a 2017 3.5l
Great helpful video ! My 2000 S-10 4x4 is doing the same thing ! Same exact rattling noise !
97 GMC Jimmy 4WD.. almost the same vehicle lol. Same problem. You ever solve what was wrong with yours?
My X3 is doing the same, when the engine is cold and when it's warm but running below 2k RPM, the crazy thing that when I went and the car the noise comes from the place where the engine and the gearbox meet each other.
Omg thank God for this video! I thought my motor was blown this morning. Sounds like a rod is gonna shoot through the block. Appreciate the info🤯
How does rocks in a can sound like rod knock 🤔 LOL
My sister in law brought her 2009 Nissan frontier with the same noise. Went under and found the rattling noise on the passangers cat converter. The secondary I believe. Great video.
Thank you I was hearing a noise from my exhaust by I never thought it would be the catalytic converter. You do talk about finding the cause of the fault but my truck doesn’t show any signs of misfire or and engine problems, the only thing I can think of is a few months ago someone half cut the other catalytic converter and I had to drive my truck about 40 miles to get it fixed
There could always be another issue or it could just be wear and tear and years of using the vehicle is what I was told. Good to check and make sure there’s no other root issues but if there isn’t, it was just time to replace
Thank you so much for this video!! This is the exact same sound my car is making and you’ve helped me to find a solution. I’ve been worried out this sound for a few months now.
Glad to help!
How much did it cost to repair ?
@@royalvibes4433 being real with you man, I haven't got it fixed yet. Although there's a shop near me that will do exhaust work for $50 for replacement or installation. The parts cost is a different matter, maybe 200 for a cat
@@BarboursAutoHelpthank you bro i though it was my timing chain 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️imma just get this boy straight piped at the point*
Holy cow, thanks for this info. Everytime when I accelerate I hear the same noise, and not too mentioned my cats are totally finished, so now I know what it is. Thsnks
Having the same issue , do I have to replace its or can I just take it out .
@@richardarmogan1705 update, the rattling noise was the a/c compressor bearings, i replace the compressor, noise stopped....

Finally! Thank you. My Nissan is making this noise every time I turn it on or accelerate. Thanks again man😅
This is the exact noise I can hear in my Ford transit , thanks for the info 🔥
No problem 👍
Thanks for this, i hit a speed bump really hard tonight because my car is lowered and I was going too fast like an idiot, at first I thought my engine was knocking but then I remembered the speed bump and it turns out that my catalytic converter is what hit against the speed bump.
This was awesome! Dealing with this problem now.
and i was thinking about just selling it cheap and taking a massive loss thank you so much you saved me $3000 God Bless you
The joint on my backbox (muffler) rattles on idle but goes away when you rev it or touch the joint. I have no engine management light and it runs fine.
Hi mate I totally agree with you that honey comb breaks down as part of wear and tear inside a cat regardless how well an owner does regular maintenance on his car . I'm going through same experience right now with my 2017 ioniq at 250K mileage and starting to hear some weird noise within that cat converter when I accelerate at times ....I figured I could extend the life of my converter as long I keep my regular maintenance like oil change air filter and other basics...once theres much consistent rattle noise during driving then it's perfect time to replace my cat once and for all
And don’t forget a good Italian tuneup!
Thank you this might be my mystery noise I kept telling people its my cat !
wow you could think of this noise as a much bigger problem like crankshaft failure or chain problems, very interesting noise, it sounds similar to my current noise problem.
Yes, true
😂😂I thought the same. I even thought it was the fly wheel😂
Got this noise on my 02 town car sounds just like it thank you!
I just found out my fj cruisers catalytic converter had the exact same problem...I thought it was a bad pulley but they found that the honeycomb inside had come loose and was making the same noise as the one you had was...Thanks for the info!
Thanks you.
2013 Holden Captiva (Chevrolet) diagnosed misfire issues. Solved.
Lead to faulty cat converter. Attached to manifold. Check engine light. Loss of power at high rpm. Decreased fuel economy and rattling cat converter exactly the same sound as this.
Wow thanks!!! Having the same problem uit what a relief thought it needed a new engine
Shot bro thank you very much. Very insightful :)
Thanks, this is exactly what I needed. Failed an emissions test for high HC and I think this might be one of the culprits. Subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Thank god I live in a state where there are no emissions tests.
@@jeramiahwestbrook7370 yeah, who needs to breathe clean air? Pollution builds character.
@@jeramiahwestbrook7370it’s nice to not have to deal with those tests, but I’d still get it looked at. No need to pollute the air we and our children breathe even more
THANK YOU i thought it was my engine at first after watching hours of videos trying to find the problem. Was going to spend hundreds for a mechanic
I’m trying to figure out sort of a similar sound when I accelerate in my 2013 2500hd. 73,000 miles. Only when I get on it to pick up speed. Sounds more like loose change. I’ve heard it in older vehicles along the years.
YOOO THANK YOU. My EcoPoof 2.0 Volvo V70 is making a really similar noise. At first I thought it was the chain, but after a replacement it didn't go away. Next, I was thinking that the wastegate on the turbo was loose, but the noise and performance indicates otherwise. Flexplate was the next painful thought. After I stumbled upon this vid, I had a sigh of relief. Changing out a cat is much better than paying someone to rebuild the engine 🙃
I thought my s2000 was knocking but it’s been doing this for months now, what a relief knowing it’s just the cat 😅
Gonna be expressive if you're not the one who is fixing it tho. But better than buying a new engine.
Mines like this but a lot quieter and only happens when accelerating 50% of the time
Question. Is it safe to drive it this way? Mine inly rattles on the freeway after about 20 min, stops a few minutes after getting off. But last night it sounded like it got stuck and my car was "growling" for a minute. Worried the exgaust could get blocked enough to overheat the engine.
Its nothing too dangerous, it affects ur mpg tho
Whelp. This is definitely mine. Also possibly blocked too. Have symptoms of that as well.
i was hearing the the rattling noises after I spun out on the highway I'm sure its the converter too because I would try to get under the car as much as I can while reving it and it does make a similar noise to this
Thanks buddy thank you so much for the video keep them coming! I like and I subscribed
Steady grinding them out.
great to put that noise....you can make the perfect diagnosis !
I have a 1998 Mercedes ML320 with 220,000 thousand miles on it same noise. My mechanic verified it not sure what to do truck still runs like a tank. Just minimal wear and tear issues and services.
This is exactly what my 2000 tahoe limited is doing!!! Guess what? I did have a bad engine misfire in which it took me doing a lot of work to get it to run correctly. After changing plugs, wires, distributor cap rotors, spider injector it finally ran right then I heard this noise 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ glad to know it’s the cats easy fix now
Thanks.very helpful video
Well...thank you for the bad news! Exactly my issue. Appreciate the video and the help. Could have been worse I suppose. NOT a noise I've ever heard before and thought the worst. Not that a catalytic converter isn't bad...but its not my engine or transmission anyway lol. You now have a new Canadian subscriber and friend "eh" lol
Same I thought my engine was going out. I have an ‘05 explorer and single mom so totally was not ready to have to get another vehicle or spend thousands on the engine. I have to thoroughly check to be sure but I’m absolutely sure it’s the same thing and I can probably do it myself.
Hopefully yes! Aftermarket cats aren't that expensive...well compared to original replacements anyway. I tapped it a few times (quite a few) with a rubber mallet. It stopped the noises until it got fixed properly anyways.
I have sifted through all the nonsense advice on here and I have come to the conclusion that I have a catalytic converter issue. What I am dealing with is when I try to accelerate when I reach about 2000 rpm’s I hear a loud sort of whining sound like the air is having trouble passing through. I noticed when me and my buddy were diagnosing the issue when we stopped pressing the gas you can hear something clink down like there is a small piece broken in there. No where near the clinking in the video. It just sounds like one small piece broken. It’s like the air flowing through elevates the broken piece and then when it stops it falls and makes a clunk. It’s definitely having difficulty going up hills. I have stayed off the freeway since I noticed the sound and the reduction of power. It’s a 1990 F350 if thatbhelps. Does this sound correct to you?
I have exactly same sound in my 2014 Nissan Rogue...and when I was fixing my suspension, the mechanic wrote about catalytic converter rattling...does it also can cause the small smoke under the hood? I have it for couple of days with no engine sign or high temp
I have a rattle somewhere but only sometimes when I drive and when I put a load on it
Sure enough, had ongoing misfirng issues and it got Pretty bad until I finally took my truck to get fixed, four spark plug coils and all spark plugs had to be replaced.
Now I'm having this exact problem with catalytic converter.
omg thats EXACTLY wtf my car sounds like but ONLY at 1500 rpm. never before and never after. this is the closest video i have EVER seen that describes the sound. i have been searching forums, videos and more for months already. everyone has an opinion and theyre all wrong lol
Could be the heat shield that's loose form rust.
The left wing media and our dirty evil government doesn't want good information out there for the people. I remember searching UA-cam and Google years ago and finding all kinds of vidoes and information. They are shadow banning us...Keeping us in the dark
My truck is making a similar noise we can't figure it out I'm assuming it's the same issue as yours however when I come to a stop it increases in volume. Do you have any idea what it could be I checked the heat shields already.
My Honda is making this noise from the Cat. Haven't ever had any problems or backfires though. I think the comb just deteriorated that much because it has 400k miles.
If you don’t have cats check your exhaust that’s connected to your headers and make sure all bolts are on all the way.
Thanks for your helpful video this is the exact sound I thought I heard ,, not sure why but I will find the root cause later when I have more time
Why does the noise happen sometimes and then goes away?
Same noise sounds coming from it seems the intake at times.
My 06 sierra did this on bank 2 converter it blew a hole through the 2nd layer of the honey comb i just went ahead and cut em off and tuned the truck to run without downstream O2 sensors
THANKS A MILLION! Same EXACT NOISE in a
2002 Chevy 4.8L, 235,000 miles.
Question-- original spark plugs (I think), been meaning to change them, could old plugs have affected the catalytic converter?
Thanks again, I’ll subscribe, PERFECT VIDEO… to the point, NO music, NO bull shyte !
😎💥💣
Spark plugs with 235,000 miles on them could definitely cause catalytic converter damage, especially if the vehicle was misfiring.
What if it’s the sound but lighter and sometimes when idle or parked and when accelerating from like 0 to 20
There is a noise that is very similar to this sound in my vehicle but when I have my car and Parked and I rub my RPMs past 1200 I hear that only in Parked though and then it goes away above 2000 RPM
Can it possibly be the same thing
After a swim in a flood I have this sound got my new exhaust system coming 😂
Are most cars able to be unbolted and replaced just like that ?
Barbour's auto help, will the clean up of catalytic can fixed this problem?
I just installed bbk shorty headers on 2013 f150 5.0 and I hear a similar lighter sound from the left side; I guessing the new headers created more heat or something? Anyone’s feedback back is appreciated 👍🏽
I have a daily driver mustang V6. This exact noise started yesterday Sept 6th. Is there a place where I can take the pieces that fall out? Thanks for the video.
Not sure.
My car makes this noise when I put car in reverse or when I’m In drive at a stop ,could this be the problem ?
This is the sound my car is making but I dont hear it while revving during idle? And no check engine codes? Could it be something else? It sounds almost exactly like this and gets worse if I accelerate, how do I test it? Could something have caused it to break like this? First when I revved my engine it almost made a whine but now it became this rattle......
Thanks!! Good to know what to keep my ears open for. No such sound for now but steadily coming engine light with 0421 code. New cat > value of car so... palliative care it is. Wondering how long one can drive like that??
Ọ yeah and it just passed yearly tech control, emissions included. (Talking hope into myself)
can it cause a knock sound also?
Wow! I've been doing research for a few hours now trying to find a video that makes the same noise as my car and as to what the problem is and this sounds exactly like it. My car makes this noise on idle only when it is in Drive, or reverse, it does not make this noise while the car is in Park. Thanks for the video and let me know if I am wrong and the noise coming from my car isn't in fact the cat converter.
So what was the problem?? I have similar problem
Yeah so was that your problem?
It was my down pipe some how it got disconnected from my exhaust
@@execo999 thanks. I'm going to have to inspect mine a little better before I assume it's my catalytic converter then.
@@LoveRango yea I had changed my downpipe like 6 months ago so I just took it back to shop that they installed it they put some welds so it wouldn’t happen again
YOOOO!!! I have been going nuts trying to figure out who the can rattling elves were. I am thinking maybe it's the muffler, a loose bracket, maybe a bolt fell into something/got caught in something and then I hooked up a scanner I saw a CAT code and other things but never put those two together as I never knew a CAT could make noise. Thank you very much.
Literally exactly what im dealing with right now i got real nervous that it was the engine rest i cant rest easy knowing its just my headers coming apart inside out
Thanks been a days looking for this sound, because it makes this sound turning right everyone Inc mechanics said it was a CV joint, but I know it can't because only now and then it makes the noise standing. Hopefully get it sorted now 👍
Good luck
Mine sounds like this but only wile accelerating forward, not backwards?
thanks man, i have the same problem
No problem
I have a 2002 Subaru legacy. Could the cause of the misfiring which caused this in my vehicle be because of the O2 sensors in the exhaust line?
Hard to say
My 2012 town and country makes this sound but only when i accelerate. No noise when idling. Could this be the cause?
Anyway this could happen after a collision? Truck got t-boned, after I got the truck back from the body shop it made this noise. Then a week later threw a check engine light for only bank 1.
Rockin the Harbor Freight Jack Stands, true bravery
I knew I had a misfire but didn’t this thats what was rattling, motor is fine when driving everything’s smooth only rattles at idle for me, and my suburban burbles and does pops sometimes because of it lol definitely getting it fixed
God bless you
You too!
Geez I just found this using a stethoscope to pin point the sound. Been searching everything
I hear this sound but only on heavy acceleration could it be my cat?
My 04 Mercury Grand Marquis had a rattle in the catalytic converter last year. Not in the position to pay for the repair, I drove it with the rattle for a couple of months then "poof" it stopped rattling. Since then, it seems a little less "peppy" but it also does have 208,000 miles on it. The only code it has had since that occurred was for a vacuum leak which I found the damage hose up by the throttle body and replaced it. Still it continues to be a little slower to accelerate. I have replaced the fuel filter. I bought the car with 150,000 miles on it and, otherwise, have done nothing to it except changing oil/transmission fluid/filters and fuel filter. Unless something else is more likely, could some of those catalytic converter pieces that broke of, rattled, then stopped rattling have lodged somewhere and are slowing the exhaust flow and causing this symptom? Thanks.
Exactly what my Durango sounds like right now
It’s only coming from my drivers side.. if I take it apart and am able to remove some loose pieces, would it get quiet again? I cannot put anymore money into this vehicle.
I have a 2005 nissan altima s everytime I put it in drive and reverse without moving the car I keep her the same rattle noise but when I out it on park the rattle noise disappeared
You just save my life man this what my car was making every time I would run it for like 30 minutes and came back and parking before I was going to turn it off it would do that sound
What about when it ticks after turning off vehicle when you get home from driving...is this a sure thing it's bad? -- also mine are covered in mud recently from off-roading...would this alone cause them to tick since they can't cool off as quick / breathe due to mud ?
Thanks.
Ticking is normal when the exhaust is cooling. However, it's not a bad idea to wash them off.
@@BarboursAutoHelp Thanks... my other vehicle does not tick though...different setups /set engine temps etc surely play a role then... thanks again.
This sounds stressed me out, along with code p0420, until I watched this! Thank You BAH
I surely thought it was the lifters in my yukon lol. Anytime i get the engine up to operating temperature it rattles like this. I told myself let me take a trip to Mississippi from Louisiana and it made it back no issues so i knew it wasn't the engine. I just didn't know converters make noise like this when they come apart. I put a stereoscope on the converter and that's where i hear the noise the loudest. Nothing from the engine
Thanks for this post, in need of a full exhaust replacement now anyway as leaks are showing as well as this rattling, I will contribute this failure to a clogged air filter that was going on for some time till the engine just would stall.(I lived and traveled on a dusty dirt road then) the filter when checked was actually being suck in so engine could get air....did get some misfire codes which lead me to the filter issue ,none since filter change but rattling started a few days ago. Engine light on and a P0420 comes up (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank1)) 2010 Ford Ranger
Hey man been 5 months I had the same problem car would stall and check engine light came on for the same code did it end up just being the catalytic converter?
I have a very similar noise, like a tin can being rattled around. But it only does it at certain moments. It’s worse when I’m slowing down, coming to a stop and especially while turning. When I’m in P, I only hear it very slightly when I give it gas, otherwise not at all. Doesn’t sound quite like the steady rattle in this video, which I’m assuming was occurring while the gas pedal was not being accelerated. Any ideas?
Okay, so I think I found where my rattle is coming from. It’s the top part of the enclosure of the cat. I don’t believe it’s internal. So I’m wondering if I can’t just hose clamp it. I’m not certain how it was constructed to begin with… welded or riveted? I didn’t see any fasteners on my brief glance. Are sealants necessary to prevent exhaust leak?
This is the sound my 2008 R32 is making lol. Figured it was the catalytic converter and a rich/lean code popping up the next day hinted that it might be. Have my mechanic looking at it right now. Lol guess I'll find out shortly 😅 fml
Thnx. for this video and info. My 2009 fx 35 has 178000 mls and there is this rattling sound that it make when the engine is idling or running at low speed. This rattling is not audible when the engine is revved, or when you are driving. ONLY WHEN IT IDLES, THROTTLES, OR DRIVE A VERY SLOW SPEED. Two mechanics told that the cause is from the timing belt guide, and the tensioner. ONE MECHANICE said it may be from the Catalytic Converter. I have never heard it before that a engine rattling could be cause by the C/converter. But after watching and listening here, i am now more prone to think that this is my issue. The vehicle drives excellent and accelerate with not rattle, what so ever at high speed. Could you say anything about your thoughts on this issue, or is there any one out there that would like to give a input on this, I would be appreciative.
It's probably best to get advice from a tech that has inspected it personally.
Thanks for this video. I will be taking car to a different shop. I will see if they can give me an honest insight or opinion.
Would this do this with a load ?
I think I’m having this problem in my charger srt but seems like it will make this sound when i first start car and in reverse but it don’t do it when after I been driving for a little bit is that the converter you think??
Not sure.
Thx man
